28th April, 2015 Reflection The Lord Is My Shepherd- A Psalm of David With sure and gentle love, God is my shepherd. I need nothing more. You give me rest in green meadows, setting me near calm waters, where you revive my spirit. You guide me along sure paths, you are true to your name. Though I should walk in death’s dark valley, I fear no evil with you by my side, your shepherd’s staff to comfort me. You spread a table before me as my foes look on. You soothe my head with oil; my cup is more than full. Goodness and love will tend me every day of my life. I will dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I shall live. Love of all loving, your compassion is without limit. We turn toward you, the one who says: ‘Do not fear, for I am with you’ (Isaiah 41:10) Guide and protect us. Amen.

ANZAC Day Commemoration

Chapel Mural

For the first time the College community gathered at our Lone Pine site on Friday morning to pay our respects to the men and women who paid the ultimate price during wartime and remembered the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. The service was led by our College Captains Tegan Lafranchi and Bowde Griffith and was supported by student leaders Joe Schembri and Dyson Miller. Poppe-Simone Sakr (8O) laid the wreath and Jason Michaux (8M) lowered and raised the Australian flag during the playing of the Rouse. The service finished with a beautiful rendition of the New Zealand National Anthem by staff member Mrs Kim Joyce.

The wall of the Chapel has been used to create a large piece of artwork that will serve as a background for our Lone Pine Memorial. Our Year 10 Art students along with our Artist in Residence Christine Sage, collaborated to produce the artwork. It is a fantastic addition to CRC Melton's growing outdoor art exhibition.

On Saturday morning Bowde Griffith and Joe Schembri represented the College at the Dawn Service in Melton. Tegan Lafranchi, Emily Bettio, Alysha Kyle and Toni Baker represented the College at Bacchus Marsh.

Parents & Friends Annual General Meeting The AGM will be held Wednesday 29th April at 7.30pm.

Australian Scout Medallion Congratulations to Sam Rogan Year 9 for recently achieving the Australian Scout Medallion. This is a fantastic achievement considering only about 3 % of scouts Australia wide actually obtain the Australian Scout Medallion. Sam had to complete a leadership course and organise a leadership activity that involved a patrol camp. He led a group of 8 other scouts including himself, for a unsupervised 30 km 2 day hike through the Lerderderg State Forest, he was accountable for all of the scouts safety. Sam will be presented with his medallion on Saturday 9th May at CRC Sydenham.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2015 Year 7 students are reminded to keep up their efforts to meet the Challenge! A number of students are well over half way in their quest to read the 15 books required to successfully meet the Challenge for 2015. To assist students who might need a little more motivation, the Library has added a number of new titles to the ePlatform, which can be found on the ePlatform app. Students are reminded that they need their College ID number and their College password to access the eBooks to read on their iPads.

NAPLAN Testing Years 7 & 9 2015 The 2014 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 12 May, Wednesday 13 May and Thursday 14 May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and school leadership which can be used to improve student achievement. All Years 7 and 9 students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. The College’s Learning Support staff will contact the parents of those students who may be eligible for exemption. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted. Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the relevant Year Level Coordinator. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available at the College. During the test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday, May 15. Parents will receive a personal NAPLAN report later in the year. The report will describe each student’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show performance in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia. I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy. For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

These times are stipulated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to ensure all schools are undertaking tests at common times. Students will need to have a ruler, an eraser and book to read (if they finish early) as well as their books for the remainder of each period class of each session unless told otherwise (as most tests will not take a full 1 period time allotment). Can I particularly stress the need for all students to have their own calculator for the Thursday morning test. Students should also check that fresh batteries have been fitted. If you have any questions, please contact Narelle Layton (Director of Learning) at College. Mid Year Exams and Timed Assessment Tasks Once again this year, the College has set out a formal assessment schedule that will operate across Years 7 – 11. These will take place over the dates from June 3 to June 12. In next week’s newsletter Exam Timetables for all year levels will be published.

Athletics Carnival - Year 12

Senior Sport

Last Thursday the 23rd of April, was the last College Athletics Carnival that we as Year 12 students had the pleasure to participate in. With dedicated team members exerting every ounce of energy they had on the field regardless of the chilly weather, and supporters on the sidelines wrapped up in cosy blankets cheering on their teams, the athletics carnival was an overall successful day full of school spirit, team pride and team effort. Year 12’s ensured they were the main spectacle on the day, dressing up with extravagant and creative costumes ranging from Elliot and E.T to street fighters and Rugrats characters. In our final opportunity to participate in the carnival, the evident determination of the Year 12 students in particular, was outstanding. Witnessing those who had not once participated in any events across their almost-6-years at the College, put their hands up and take the risk for their team, or volunteer to set up, run, and assist at events really demonstrated both the excitement and enthusiasm our final chance to participate encouraged. All in all, it was a productive and bitter-sweet day knowing it would be our last College athletics carnival, but we all enjoyed ourselves and made the most of it while we could. Finally thank you to Miss Brown for organising the day and making it a fantastic day every for everyone who attended.

Last week CRC Melton travelled to Salesian College in Sunbury. While taking on the reigning premiers was never going to be easy, our netballers defeated Salesian 32 goals to 18.

Chapel Mural The wall of the Chapel has been used to create a large piece of artwork that will serve as a background for our Lone Pine Memorial. Our Year 10 Art students along with our Artist in Residence Christine Sage, collaborated to produce the artwork. It is a fantastic addition to CRC Melton's growing outdoor art exhibition. Outlined below is the inspiration for the artwork: As children we sometimes lay on our backs and stare up at the sky, looking through the trees. It is one of the most magical experiences and connects us with the heavens above. It lifts our spirits and at the same time makes us feel small in our great universe. It makes us wonder and ask questions. We extend this to the night sky with the stars and reflections in the pods of water. It is also perhaps the last view for the fallen soldier as they lay wounded on the battle field, reconnecting them to their childhood and of humbler days spent laying in the grass looking up at the sky. Amy Rowley Head of Art I learnt how to paint, never painted before. I learnt how to use depths in a piece of art and a different perspective of an image, blending paints and how to use textures to enhance elements of the painting. I loved working towards a large outcome/project, I loved the overall experience of an artist coming in and teaching us a little on how to use paint correctly to create a beautiful art piece. In the end, I am elated with the end product and how I contributed. Taylor Cikora Working on this art piece opened my eyes to the different types of ways to apply paint to artwork. Having Chris, Regina and Meghan and staff was a big help and a big confidence boost while we worked on the artwork. Teamwork was really visible during the days of working, which was really good to see. Learning how to blend artwork was amazing to l earn It has really opened my eyes to carry out art in the future. All up, this experience was amazing and I am honoured to have been a part of it. Brittany Jakeman During the two days we spent making the Mural I learnt how to blend colours and scrumble. While painting the Mural I felt great and by the end of the mural you could see that our class worked amazing together producing an awesome finished product. William Di Mieri
