28th February, 2017 Reflection For Lent Gracious God, tomorrow begins a period of inner reflection and examination. The days stretch before me and invite me inward to that silent, holy space that holds your Spirit. This special time beckons me to see my life through Christ's eyes and the truth and reality of your love incarnate. Give me the grace to enter the space of these days with anticipation of our meeting. And, when I open my soul to your presence, let your loving kindness flow over me and seep into the pockets of my heart. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen

Dear Parents and Students, Abby Rogers RIP Many parents will be aware that Abby Rogers lost her life in a tragic car accident on Sunday afternoon. Abby completed VCAL at CRC Melton in 2013. The family celebrated her 21st Birthday just two weeks ago. Abby’s brother, Billy is currently in Year 10 at CRC Melton. Her siblings, twins, Bethany and Madeline, completed Year 12 last year, and were at the school last Wednesday night for the Year 12, 2016 BBQ. Our prayers and thoughts are with parents Wendy and Neville, and her siblings Jack, Darcy, Bethany, Madeline and Billy and the extended family. Tributes below have been contributed by Alastair Bloom and Karen Hunter ‘Abby was a kind and compassionate student who placed the needs and concerns of others ahead of her own. She was empathetic and caring which was demonstrated through her willingness to help other students (and staff) in moments of need no matter how busy she was. She worked diligently and tried her best at her studies. Her legacy in her time at the College was her empathy for all living creatures and her gentle soul. ‘ Alistair Bloom ‘Abby was a most positive caring considerate young lady who always put others needs first. She was a great support for others and always had a great big smile for all. She would brighten up your day with her greeting and smile.’ Karen Hunter Please see the Herald Sun for details of the Funeral. Relay for Life The Relay for Life was held last weekend from Saturday night through to Sunday morning. It was a terrific effort by all involved with in excess of $3500 raised. Below is great feedback from a parent: What a fantastic effort from all who represented CRC Melton. The atmosphere around the marquee and the kids was infectious and a credit to them all. Behaving differently when no one else is watching is nothing new to the digital age, just more pronounced. It's an extension of the "what would you do if you were invisible?" question, as there are opportunities for you to be somewhat invisible over the internet. A lot of the time this happens outside of school hours in the privacy of their own home. The fallout then comes into the school yard and classroom. It has come to our attention in recent days that a Year 8 CRC Instagram/Snapchat account has been established. Students have used this account to post offensive and inappropriate comments about other students. Whilst this account cannot be accessed at school on their iPad, as it is blocked by our network, they are able to log on at home with their phones. Full-On Theatre, raise the heART and CRC Melton present THE CHANGE

A theatrical experience that explores racism, community and belonging. The journey begins with an immersive physical labyrinth that the audience travels through. It’s full of installations that the performers bring to life and where you become part of the story that's unfolding. This is followed by a more traditional short play in the theatre that includes an ensemble of actors, live music and screen projections. THE CHANGE has been created by Year 8, 9 & 10 students in association with a professional theatre company. Performance for friends and families: Wednesday 29th March, 7pm Venue: Performing Arts Centre Languages News It is not long now until our students head to Italy to visit their friends in Cividale on Wednesday 29th March! We are very excited for them. If anyone is interested in studying a language outside of school hours please see me as the Victorian School of Languages may be able to help you. We currently have a number of students who study Chinese, Maltese, Spanish and Japanese either of an evening or on a Saturday morning. Students should be using the Education Perfect app at home as this will assist them with their language studies at school as well as at home. Ten minutes on Education Perfect three times a week would be ideal to spend time learning your chosen language. Claudia Russo Head of Languages Domain Compulsory Meeting for Pilgrims and Parents There will be a compulsory meeting for Pilgrims and Parents at the College on Wednesday 15th March at 7.00pm.

Breakfast Club

The meaning of breakfast is to “ break the fast”. It is meant to fuel our bodies and give us the energy to kick start our day. Many studies have proven that people who eat a good breakfast perform better. We know that for many reasons, a lot of our students come to school without having had breakfast. This year we will be offering a free breakfast on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8.10 – 8.40. Toast, cereal and a drink will be on offer in the food room. Everyone is welcome. Senior students and parents wishing to help should email mrowe-watts@crcmelton.com.au indicating their preference for days. Shrove Tuesday / Pancake Tuesday – A little history

Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which is the first day of Lent. It's a day of penitence, to clean the soul, and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. But there's more to Shrove Tuesday than pigging out on pancakes or taking part in a public pancake race. The pancakes themselves are part of an ancient custom with deeply religious roots. Penitence Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. When a person receives absolution for their sins, they are forgiven for them and released from the guilt and pain that they have caused them. In the Catholic or Orthodox context, the absolution is pronounced by a priest. This tradition is very old. Over 1000 years ago a monk wrote in the Anglo-Saxon Ecclesiastical Institutes: In the week immediately before Lent everyone shall go to his confessor and confess his deeds and the confessor shall so shrive him. Shrove Tuesday celebrations Shrove Tuesday is a day of celebration as well as penitence, because it's the last day before Lent. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Giving up foods: but not wasting them. In the old days there were many foods that observant Christians would not eat during Lent: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs, and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on the shriving Tuesday, and eat up all the foods that wouldn't last the forty days of Lent without going off. Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour. How to make pancakes You will need: 1 1/2 cups milk 2 cups self-raising flour 1/3 cup caster sugar

1 egg 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda 25g butter, melted

Method  

Step 1- Whisk milk, egg and vanilla together in a jug. Sift flour and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Stir in sugar. Make a well in centre. Add milk mixture. Whisk until just combined. Step 2 - Heat a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Brush pan with butter. Using 1/4 cup mixture per pancake, cook 2 pancakes for 3 to 4 minutes or until bubbles appear on surface. Turn and cook for 3 minutes or until cooked through. Transfer to a plate. Cover loosely with foil to keep warm. Repeat with remaining mixture, brushing pan with butter between batches. Serve them in a stack with fruit and honey or maple syrup.

Relay for Life

As some of you may know last weekend the College took part in the Cancer Council's Relay for Life event at Tabcorp Park Melton, to raise funds and awareness for the impact of cancer. It was a fantastic event enjoyed by 30 College participants as they walked and ran well into the night and early hours of Sunday morning. As Sport Captains, we are extremely proud of the efforts of the College community as we raised in excess of $3500. We would like to thank everyone who participated for donating and for their time and efforts over the course of the weekend. The College finished with an outstanding total of 180 laps over the 18 hour period! We would also like to thank DJ Mugga for volunteering to play a set at the event which set the mood for the night and was enjoyed by all. It was also great to see Miss Nowak, Miss Hill and Mr McCann visit and support us. It was a fantastic event for a great cause and we look forward to participating again next year! If you missed the chance to do it this year we urge you to give it a crack as it is a very memorable and worthwhile experience. Boden Mugridge and Matt Spiteri Sport Captains

Year 7 Peer Support Last week students explored the idea that how they view themselves and their challenges, can affect the outcomes of these situations. Students discussed helpful ways to view challenges. They considered keeping things in perspective, separating emotions and ascertaining facts to accurately identify the problem to be addressed. Your child may, at times, feel overwhelmed by the expectations of secondary school. Encourage them to make a list or write a plan to help identify smaller tasks to make a large workload more manageable. It is important they feel supported while being encouraged to independently prioritise their responsibilities. Elise Nowak Student Leadership Coordinator
