29th April 2014 Reflection “Peace Be With You” When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you’ (John 20:19–21). Lord Jesus, you appeared to your disciples after the Resurrection and filled their hearts with joy when you said to them ‘Peace be with you’. May the peace of your presence abide with us and in the heart of our world. You promised to be with your disciples, to the end of the world. Dwell in our midst today and remain with us always. Remember us as we minister to your people. Purify our hearts with your truth and guide us in the way of your peace. Amen.

Catholic Identity Parent Survey

Secretary - Fiona Roberts I am very grateful for the time and support the Parents & Friends committee provide the College community. I encourage families to attend P & F meetings. A reminder that payment for Parents & Friends is now overdue. The fee is $15 per family if you have completed 5 hours voluntary work last year. New families and families who have not completed 5 hours voluntary work are required to pay $115. Road Closure We have received notification from the company completing roadworks that Bulmans Road will have one lane closed on Thursday. Traffic will be restricted near Sovereign Boulevard. Parent Survey sessions: Thursday 8th May 2014 - 1.45pm, 4.00pm or 7.00pm in the College Library. We are seeking 70 parents who are prepared to be involved by answering questionnaires that will require about an hour of their time. We invite parents to attend one of the sessions above where a staff member will lead you through the online process here at school. To show our appreciation the school will provide drinks and nibbles and give each parent participant a movie voucher. Students Contacting Parents A significant number of students are coming to the main office to use the school phone to contact parents regarding a range of matters, eg. who is picking me up at the end of the day or requests to drop off forgotten schoolwork or sports gear? This is tying up the school phones and office staff. In future any students who need to use the phone will be directed to the payphone available at the office. The cost of a call is 50cents. Emergency calls to home will be made by office staff. Impact-Motivational Media Presentation From the moment we take our first breath we are bombarded with sights, sounds, emotions and actions which will shape who we are to become. The impact of some events may leave us fearful and hurt. Others may challenge us and even empower us to do great things. We in turn can impact on the decisions and directions of those we come in contact with. Understanding the power of such impacts should make us consider carefully what actions we take. Today all Year 7-12 students had the opportunity to attend a large screen video presentation based on the theme of what impact they as individuals can have on themselves and others. The presentation was a mixture of music, video clips and the stories of 5 young people whose lives have been changed and have changed the lives of others. Ryan Campbell was inspired to fly from a young age and by his fifteenth birthday he was able to fly solo. He then set himself the goal of being the youngest person to fly solo around the world. Through determination he was able to overcome numerous hurdles and he was able to achieve this goal in 2013 at age nineteen. Elia was a sixteen year old suffering from anorexia as a result of negative self-image and anxiety. Writing the song ‘Unbreakable’ helped to give her the resilience needed to find her way through her illness. Her song has also helped other girls working through similar issues. Sam Ford was walking to a night club for his first time clubbing since turning eighteen. A punch from a drunken attacker left him with a fractured skull and massive long term brain damage. He now requires full time care from his family and finds it very difficult to communicate.
Marita Cheng (2012 Young Australian of the Year) was surprised that so few girls were studying engineering in her university engineering course. To encourage girls to go into this field, she started Robogals which brings robotic workshops to high school students. Robogals now has thousands of volunteers and operates throughout Australia and in the UK, US and Japan. Daniel Flynn (2014 Victorian Young Australian of the Year) was struck by the contrast between the millions of people with no access to clean water, and the millions of dollars spent in Australia on bottled water, despite having ready access to clean water from the tap. Along with a couple of friends he started the “Thankyou water” social enterprise – selling bottled water in Australia and investing profits in clean water projects in developing nations. Year 12 Parent Information Evening—VCE Success Strategies The Parent Information evening for Wednesday 30 April has been cancelled because of very poor numbers. Robert Blackley Deputy Principal-Students Ensemble Performances The Year 11 and 12 VCE Drama class will be presenting their Ensemble Performances at 7pm on Thursday 15th May, in the Drama Studio. The Year 10 Drama class will be presenting their Ensemble Performances at 7pm on Tuesday 20th May, in the Drama Studio. All parents, family members and friends of the cast are welcome, as are members of the College community. As the students performing will be assessed on this same evening, it is imperative that standard theatre etiquette is observed. In line with this, it would be advisable that babies or small children do not attend. Please phone Samantha Frazzetto in the College office on 9743 6522 to RSVP for the performance itself, prior to the performance evening. The Ensemble Performances should prove to be highly engaging. Indonesian Trip
Uniform Shop News
On Thursday the 3rd of April, 13 students and 3 teachers travelled to Indonesia for a cultural and learning experience. Starting off in Yogyakarta, the students strongly developed their language skills by attending language school, speaking to the locals around the villages and visiting many religious temples including Borobudur, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Continuing on, we trekked to Mount Bromo to watch the sunrise over a volcano which was a phenomenal experience. After that we travelled to Ubud and experienced more amazing things. We rode elephants, went to more temples, visited the monkey forest and did a 38km bike ride around the countryside. To end our spectacular trip, we finished off in Seminyak, did some more shopping and spent our last day at Water Bomb Park before sharing our final dinner together. Overall this trip was a life changing experience that we will all treasure for a lifetime. This wouldn't have been made possible if it wasn't for Mr Gavran, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Conte, so a big thank you to all of them for making this possible.

Other items, white shirts, trousers etc. can be left as a donation to Welfare services at the school. St Vincent de Paul Society Recruitment Campaign Bacchus Marsh Conference April/May 2014 The St Vincent de Paul Society has been in operation for 160 years in Victoria. The Society here in Bacchus Marsh wishes to revitalize its conference and to reintroduce the home visitation program. The Society continues to assist families and individuals across the Central Highland region through a number of programs.
