29th July, 2014 Reflection Pope Francis made an emotional plea for peace last Sunday in addition to comments delivered at his weekly Angelus address in Saint Peter's Square. As the Pontiff wrapped up his regular address to the faithful, he spoke of the upcoming centenary of the outbreak of World War One and said his thoughts were on the Middle East, Iraq, Israel, Gaza and Ukraine in particular. The pope broke off from his scripted remarks to make a direct appeal for fighting to end. "Please stop!, I ask you with all my heart, it's time to stop. Stop, please!" "Brothers and sisters, never war, never war! I am thinking above all of children, who are deprived of the hope of a worthwhile life, of a future," he said. "Dead children, injured children, mutilated children, orphaned children, children whose toys are things left over from war, children who can't smile any more," he said. Prayer for Peace O Lord Jesus Christ, who said to Your Apostles: "Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you," regard not my sins but the faith of Your Church, and deign to give her peace and unity according to Your Will: Who live and reign, God, world without end. Amen.

Re-enrolment 2015

Last week, Lucas Dingli (Year 8), Mitchell Wills (Year 10) and Adam Benca (Year 12), represented CRC and Team Vic at the Australian School Sport Swimming Championships.

During Term 3 a formal re-enrolment process will take place. This process enables the College to comply with a CEO requirement regarding enrolment data which is due in Term 4. The actual enrolment prediction for the 2015 school year will influence the recurrent funding for the College.

In his first time on the team Lucas did a great job to finish 8th in the final of the 13/14 Years 200m Breaststroke, willingly filled in for a Northern Territory relay team and swam a great leg of the 9 x 50 mixed freestyle relay helping the Vics take gold. Mitchell, also a first time Team Vic swimmer, did a great job to equal his personal best in the 15/16 years 400 freestyle to place 5th in the final. In the spirit of the event he also helped SA and the NT to field relay teams in events where they otherwise might not have been able to participate. Adam capped off three great years on the team, finishing 6th in the 17/18 Years 200m Backstroke final, and 8th in the 17/18 Years 100m backstroke final. Earlier in the week he was named as Vice-captain of the team and then, on the final day, was honored with a Sportsmanship Award from School Sport Australia.

The Parish Priests and Finance Committee are currently drawing up lists of families who are behind in their Thanksgiving envelopes and/or school fees. To avoid an interview please make an effort to have your fees and Thanksgiving envelopes up to date. Re-enrolment paperwork will be sent home the week beginning the 11th August and will be due, with a $100 per child re-enrolment fee, on Thursday 28th August.

Parents & Friends Meeting There will be a Parents & Friends meeting Wednesday, 30th July at 7.00pm.

School Improvement Surveys

2015 Subject Selections

We are seeking the support of our parents as we believe our parent voice is important to help shape the ongoing improvement of our school.

Year 10 and 11 students have begun their 2015 Subject Selections. 2015 Year 11 student and parent/guardian interviews take place this Thursday. All current Year 9 students should have received family invitations to attend our Year 10 2015 Information Evening next Wednesday, August 6 at 7pm. We look forward to seeing many families there.

The School Improvement Survey will be available from Monday 28th July 2014 to Friday 22nd August, 2014. Why Do We Survey? The main aim of the survey is to identify factors that contribute to the organisational health of your child’s/ children’s school and provide valuable information about what is going well and not so well and the ways in which this may be improved and built upon. We are consulting families to gather your input to shape the future development of our school. Although we strongly encourage you to complete the survey, your participation is voluntary. If you are willing to complete the survey please email: kmatthews@crcmelton.com.au to receive the survey information. Exercise Induced Asthma Parents of children with Asthma please read the following winter newsletter from the Asthma Foundation. Tips for staying active this winter! Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA) is a common trigger for asthma. However, it does not need to be a barrier to students participating in sports and physical activities. Here are some tips to help prevent EIA in students: Before Exercise take reliever medication 5-20 minutes before warming up. Warm Up before exercise as normal. During Exercise watch for asthma symptoms and administer reliever medication if they should occur. Only return to exercise if symptoms are relieved. If symptoms appear again, administer medication again, until they are relieved. It is not recommended that the student should return to the sporting activity after a second occurrence of asthma symptoms. After Exercise cool down as usual. Note that asthma symptoms can present up to a half an hour after exercise has stopped. Ensure reliever medication is still easily accessible should it be required. Other things to remember:  Ensure all students have current Asthma Action/ Care Plans  If possible make activities that are scheduled for the night indoors as the drop in air temperature makes air colder to inhale and acts as a greater trigger.  Encourage students with asthma to participate fully!

Tree Planting Days

Cabaret - A Night at the Movies

Last Friday the 25th July, CRC Melton took part in it's first National Tree Day, an event coordinated by Planet Ark to get kids more involved with the environment. It was a successful day filled with fun and allowed students to engage with their natural surroundings, with 80 student volunteers planting over 100 trees that were kindly donated by Bunnings Melton and Melton City Council. Our school grounds have improved tremendously from such a simple task that has lead to growth in our students' appreciation for nature and pride in our College. A huge thank you to Ms Grech for her assistance in organising the event, the College Maintenance team, the generous donations and to all the teachers and students who participated on the day.

As the opening night for this year’s Cabaret performance draws closer, it is timely to advise the College community that whilst the dates for this year’s performance remain the same, Thursday 4th September and Friday 5th September, the venue of the performance has changed. Due to circumstances beyond the control of the project manager of the new Performing Arts Centre, the Cabaret performance will be relocated to the CRC Melton Hall. The Cabaret Team is working tirelessly with the cast of dancers, singers and musicians to create a performance that is strong and entertaining and which will be nostalgic in terms of being the very last performing arts works to be held within the Hall. Tickets for Cabaret - A Night at the Movies will go on sale Monday 11th August, please return the ticket order form below or download from the College website -
