31st July 2012 Reflection As swimmers dare to lie face to the sky and water bears them, as hawks rest upon air and air sustains them, so would I learn to attain freefall, and float into Creator Spirit’s deep embrace, knowing no effort earns that all-surrounding grace. (Denise Levertov)
Charlotte’s Web
New College website
Congratulations to Clare O’Sullivan and her team for an outstanding Production of Charlotte’s Web. The cast of over 65 students were terrific and the support they received from teachers and parents involved was tremendous. Thanks in particular to the following staff:
Our new College website was launched on the weekend so I encourage parents to have a look at what it’s like. One area of the website that parents may like to access is the Parent portal. You will receive information on how to access this within the next week.

www.crcmelton.com.au New electric gates to Car Park The College has installed electric gates to three of our school entrances in order to improve security and the safety of students. When our system is up and running, students and visitors will be able to access the school property via the main pedestrian gates. To ensure clear access parents are reminded not to park in front of the gateways at any time . Welcome night to Mowbray families Last Wednesday night a group of parents and staff held a welcome night for families from Mowbray College. There were about 20 families present and it was good to see Fr Michael Moody present as well. Feedback was that the new students have settled into their classes well at CRC, so we hope the transition continues in that vein.

Year 12 Information
Re-enrolment
Last Thursday, students attended a Year level assembly where a number of issues were addressed. I would like to reiterate some of the messages put forward.
The re-enrolment process is presently underway. The Parish Priests and Finance Committee are currently drawing up lists of families who are behind in their Thanksgiving envelopes and fees. To avoid an interview please make an effort to have your fees and Thanksgiving envelopes up to date.
Students need to ensure that their attendance to Thursday activities is a priority. The activities for each Thursday afternoon are printed each week in the newsletter, listed on the student calendar on SIMON, placed on a timetable in each homeroom and listed on SIMON’s Daily Messages. Students should not be using this time to book doctor’s appointments or driving lessons. Students who are driving to school must ensure that they have filled in the correct documentation. This documentation must be obtained from the YLC. They are not permitted to drive other students from the school. They do have permission to drive family members, with appropriate documentation. Students are not permitted to leave College grounds at lunchtime or recess to purchase lunch. Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. Attendance of classes should be 90%. Students leaving school before the scheduled time, need to have permission from the YLC and sign out at the front office. Students should be making the most of their private study periods. It is beneficial for students to be at school gaining assistance from staff or completing set tasks or study.
Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) - Second Instalment Parents/guardians who lodged an EMA application at the beginning of the year are not required to lodge another EMA application to receive the second instalment of EMA. If you have a child under 16, and hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card, or are a foster parent, you may be eligible to receive the EMA. In 2012 the total annual amount for secondary students is $470. Payment for the second instalment is $141.00. Parent/guardians whose children have transferred to this school will need to submit a new EMA application form and return it to the College with a copy of their Health Care Card. Application forms are available from the office. Applications close on 3rd August 2012. Late applications cannot be processed. If you have any queries please contact the School Office.

IRisk - Motivational Media Presentation
Think you know
Last Thursday all Year levels had the opportunity to watch a large screen media presentation with a focus of risk taking behaviour.
Sage Parker thought she could trust the person she sent her images to using social media. She now wonders where the images have gone and who has seen them. Sage uses her experiences to help educate other young people about the dangers of technology.
The theme of the presentation posed the following questions: Ever been tempted to do something but decided it was too risky? Ever done something then afterwards said that you’d never do it again because you hadn’t realised how risky it really was? Ever done something that ended in disaster because you hadn’t even thought about the risk factor? The reality is that almost everything we do has some element of risk attached. Living life to the full requires an understanding of what risk is, how we calculate the level of its impact, and whether we decide to act despite the risks involved. It used the stories of 4 individuals, outlined below, whose lives and the lives of others have been impacted because of the decisions they made. The students were being asked to consider the implications and consequences of their decisions and the impact they have on their lives and the lives of others. Shattered Under the influence of alcohol, Peter Hodgkins threw a rock from an overpass, hitting a car and seriously injuring passenger Nicole Timbs. After a four year prison sentence, Peter now visits schools and talks about the consequences of undertaking risky activities. As he tries to reshape his life, Nicole struggles to overcome her massive head injuries. Emergency management Pilot Mark Kempton from Emergency Management Queensland talks about his experiences rescuing stranded families from perilous situations during the Queensland floods of January 2011. Though he realised he was engaged in high risk operations, he knew that his training and experience would help in managing these risks. One risk too many Alex Brown had everything to live for, yet a combination of seemingly small risks, driving on an unfamiliar road, not wearing a seat belt, and texting while driving, led to a horror single vehicle crash which ended her life and devastated her family and friends.
Follow up activities and discussions are taking place in the classroom with the students. I would encourage you to talk with your sons/daughters about some of the issues raised in the presentation. Winter Uniform Term 3 The CRC uniform is a very smart and attractive uniform when it is worn correctly. The requirements are set out clearly in the student diary and on the school website. Failing to wear the uniform correctly can result in points being given. If a student is consistently wearing the uniform incorrectly they will receive a detention after school as a result of an accumulation of points. The PE uniform is only worn when the student has a timetabled PE class, Automotive, Drama class or when otherwise specified by the College Leadership team. Students are only permitted to wear one plain silver or gold stud or small sleeper in the ear, no facial piercing is allowed. We look for your support in ensuring your son or daughter is wearing the College uniform correctly to and from school. Late to School The School requires regular and punctual attendance at school and to all classes. Students must be at school throughout the hours of a normal school day, this includes Homeroom at the start of the school day. Attendance enables proper continuity of programs, development of understanding, completion of work in class and dissemination of information. The most common reason given by students at the start of the day for being late is they slept in. This is not a legitimate reason or excuse. In today’s modern and digital world it is difficult to understand students not having access to an alarm of a morning, all mobile phones these days have alarm capacity. Students with a pattern of lateness to school for sleeping in will receive a Thursday after school detention. We are asking for your support to ensure your son/daughter is arriving to school on time and ready for Homeroom at 8.48am. Robert Blackley Deputy Principal - Student

Spacer Use in Schools/Preschools: Advice for Parents & Carers
Charlotte’s Web
st
As of the 1 July 2012, schools and preschools in Victoria will be implementing a new policy in regards to single person spacer use. This means that schools and preschools will no longer be able to wash, sterilise and re-use spacers and face masks from their asthma emergency kits when assisting students and children with asthma symptoms. Spacers should always be used when administering reliever ‘puffer’ medication because:
Using a spacer with a ‘puffer’ ensures that more medication reaches the airways Spacers are much easier for children to use than a ‘puffer’ alone, and allows school and preschool staff to help students/children during an asthma attack, often in an emergency situation Spacers are an essential part of the Asthma First Aid procedure that Victorian schools/preschools are instructed to follow
Asthma first aid kits should only ever be used as a back-up for when a child with asthma does not have their own spacer available, or if it is a first asthma attack or the cause of breathing difficulty is unknown. Your child’s school/preschool may implement a policy where parents/carers are responsible for the cost of the spacer if one must be used from the asthma emergency kit. Even if your child has mild asthma, it is essential that their medication and spacer (and a compatible face mask if under 5 years old) is always available to school/ preschool staff. To ensure that a spacer is not left at home, we would recommend that parents/carers purchase a second spacer for their child to have with them at school/preschool at all times if possible.
We will be following the new policy and as such, ask all parents with children that suffer from Asthma to provide us with a ‘named’ spacer for their child’s use as well as bringing their own ‘puffer’. If we do not have such we will pass on the cost of a College provided spacer to the family. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff)
