3rd February, 2015 Reflection The Journey Begins As we step into this new year, restore our spirits. Renew our passion for sharing your wisdom and nurture our compassion For those in need of greater support. Transform us as we seek to transform: Guide us as we seek to guide; Open our minds and hearts as we seek to open minds and hearts To the Good News of justice and peace. Help us listen more deeply to the world and to your Word, So we can walk with those in our care, Attentive to the Wisdom that calls us all to the Kingdom of God. (Adapted from a prayer by Jane Deren (http://www.educationforjustice.org)

Congratulations to our students, who have settled in well to their 2015 classes. Buses Students travelling on Bacchus Marsh Coaches and SITA buslines will have the pick-up procedures monitored to ensure maximum safety. We will be consulting with the companies and bus drivers to see what, if any changes are needed. All students travelling on the 3 Bacchus Marsh Coaches that leave the College at approximately 3.40pm will be issued with a coloured card by the bus driver this week upon pickup. This will ensure these students have a seat on the afternoon pickup. Please let the Bus company and the College know if you have concerns. Year 7 and 8 Information Evenings I look forward to meeting Year 7 & 8 parents / guardians this Wednesday at our Information evenings. Year 7 Information Evening 6.30pm Year 8 Information Evening 7.00pm

Year 9 – 12 Subject Changes As all Year 9 – 12 students undertook a thorough selection process last year, no changes will be made in the first week of school unless there are exceptional circumstances. Once students have had time to experience their subjects, restricted subject changes may be considered for some students in the 2nd week of term. Changes for Semester Two electives will be available closer to the start of Term 3. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff)

School Uniforms Term 1 The College has a set school uniform policy and students are expected to wear it correctly. It is very encouraging to see the vast majority of students wearing the correct uniform, whether it is the school uniform or PE uniform. There are still a small number of students wearing branded white socks with their PE uniform when plain white sports socks are required. As I said to the students at the school assembly on Monday the moment the College is sponsored by one of the well-known name brands is when they become school uniform. School Assembly Day One of the school began with meeting Homeroom teachers and the Year Level Coordinators followed by the first full school assembly for the year. We managed to seat 1022 students in the College Hall. Following the official welcome to the College by Mr Sheehan and an update of the Performing Arts program by the Arts Captain Dyson Miller, I presented to the students our focus for the year, that being Dignity and Self Respect. I put to them, it comes down to the way you treat people. When you treat people with dignity and respect all the time, you can work through anything. You show your understanding of other people's dignity 

by honoring them (e.g., paying attention to them)

by respecting them (e.g., treating them with fairness, justice, compassion).

You show your understanding of your own dignity by acting according to your 

sense of importance,

worth and value,

having high aspirations,

valuing your abilities and ideas,

acting so as to achieve good end results.

Vince Lombardi-famous American Football coach saw dignity as this. “If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done. Hard work will bring success and that applies to everything we do”. The particular quote I like by Lombardi that I put to the students is “the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary”. So hard work will bring success and that applies to everything we do. Rob Blackley Deputy Principal – Student Welfare

The Performing Arts Showcase

Peer Support 2015

The Performing Arts Showcase is to be staged at 7pm on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th March, in the long awaited and much anticipated Performing Arts Centre. Doors will open at 6.15pm for the College’s first major performance works for 2015, with pre-show drinks and hors d’oeuvres prepared and served in the theatre foyer by the Year 10 Hospitality class.

During Term 1 the Year 10 Peer Support leaders will be coming into Year 7 classrooms for 40 minutes every week to work on the skills of 'Behaving with Integrity'. The Peer Support program teaches young people practical life skills that help both themselves and their friends through times of change and adversity and the program provides a fun, but thought provoking environment to address these issues. This module supports students to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes enabling them to identify their values and align their actions with their beliefs. 'Behaving with Integrity' focuses on four specific values; respect, responsibility, inclusion and integrity and the module compliments and supports the National Framework for Values Education in Australian schools. To support your child through this transition you can discuss with your child the activities, concepts and understandings they developed by participating in the Peer Support Program. If you have any queries in regards to this program, please don't hesitate to contact me on lgrech@crcmelton.com.au

The Performing Arts Showcase will be comprised of a variety of different performance works including:  10 ways to survive the Zombie Apocalypse, which will explore the survival mechanisms required to survive a major zombie attack.  The production of Coping will explore a large scale world disaster as a metaphor for the tragedies that we will encounter throughout our lives.  The Roaring 20s will wow audiences with dance works that have been inspired by movies such as The Great Gatsby, Cabaret and Chicago. The costumes will be dazzling, matching choreography that will be both uplifting and inspiring. Tickets are $10 each and are available from Samantha Frazzetto in the College office, phone 9743 6522.

Canteen News

Uniform Shop

Welcome everyone to a new year and I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a safe and happy new year. As I stated last year we are no longer using Coca cola for our drinks supplier and the transition to Schweppes went well during 2014. As new products hit the shelves in the shops I will keep everyone informed and introduce them into the canteen. Once again the canteen menus will be available online but if you would like a hard copy please fee free to come and see me in the canteen or ask for a copy to be put in the lunch bag for home. Please also note the new healthy salad ranges went really well and they are all available again this year. The following are available and don’t forget the Caesar salads, Hokkien salad with chicken and also the fabulous Salad shakers (vegetarian, chicken, ham or tuna). As written on the back of the menu please note if you want to make sure you don’t miss out on what you want please put an order into the canteen in the morning and this will avoid you having to line up and also being disappointed in missing out on what you wanted. Recess orders can also be done before school and then no line up is necessary. Further to our news last year also we will be selling Fantastic Noodle cups both chicken and beef again but they will have a lid supplied and the water drained, so no chance of burns. Please have a good read of the menu as it is extensive and we have a lot to offer, don’t forget to add 10c for bags, 20c for spoon or forks and 30c for tomato sauce, mayo or pickles. As per previous years, volunteers would be greatly appreciated. As hours are no longer being taken into account for a discount off your P & F fees, I will be offering the parents who volunteer a free lunch order for one child on the day of your volunteering, the school will be also doing something as a thank you which will be advised at a later date. Volunteers are required between 10.00am and approximately 2.00pm and lunch is provided. Could you please fill in the volunteer slip on the following page and return it as soon as possible to the canteen. Thank you everyone and good luck in 2015.

Volunteers are needed for the Uniform Shop on Wednesdays 1.00pm - 2.00pm and 6.30pm - 7.30pm. Please complete the volunteer slip on the following page and return it as soon as possible.
