4th February, 2014 Reflection We start this new year with the thoughts that Pope Francis expressed on the first day of 2014..... “In this, my first Message for the World Day of Peace, I wish to offer to everyone, individuals and peoples, my best wishes for a life filled with joy and hope. In the heart of every man and woman is the desire for a full life, including that irrepressible longing for fraternity which draws us to fellowship with others and enables us to see them not as enemies or rivals, but as brothers and sisters to be accepted and embraced. Fraternity is an essential human quality, for we are relational beings. A lively awareness of our relatedness helps us to look upon and to treat each person as a true sister or brother; without fraternity it is impossible to build a just society and a solid and lasting peace. We should remember that fraternity is generally first learned in the family, thanks above all to the responsible and complementary roles of each of its members, particularly the father and the mother. The family is the wellspring of all fraternity, and as such it is the foundation and the first pathway to peace, since, by its vocation, it is meant to spread its love to the world around it.....”- Pope Francis Jan 1 2014

College Captains Our Co Captains, Hannah Robinson and Julien Johnson pictured with Mr Sheehan have made a great start to the school year.

Staff email addresses Many parents use email to contact their child’s Homeroom or subject teachers and that has worked well in past years, so we encourage that form of communication. The email addresses for our staff are on the College website, but it may be useful to know that the address is derived using the staff member’s initial and surname ie sfrazzetto@crcmelton.com.au is Samantha Frazzetto’s email address It’s been a good start to the school year and I look forward to meeting the new Year 7 Parents on Wednesday night. Mark Sheehan Principal

Congratulations to our students, who have settled in well to their 2014 classes. Buses Students travelling on Bacchus Marsh Coaches and SITA buslines will have the pick-up procedures monitored to ensure maximum safety and clarity for students. We will be consulting with the companies and bus drivers to see what, if any changes are needed. All students travelling on Bacchus Marsh Coaches need to have completed a Bus Travellers Form available from Student Reception.

CRC Swimming Carnival 2014 The 2014 Catholic Regional College Melton Swimming Carnival is to be held at Melton Waves Leisure Centre on Monday 10th February. The following information provides a summary of the day and the requirements for attendance. Please note that it is a calendared event and therefore full attendance is expected. We have endeavoured to include a range of alternative activities to cater for students who are not confident in their swimming ability and hope that this will enable all students to focus on the development of a positive and encouraging school community.

Bulmans Road – Drop-off / Pick-up With power pole works taking place outside the College on Bulmans Road for the next 2 weeks, I would also like to thank parents dropping off and picking up students for their compliance with the designated parking areas. Again we continue to work with the Melton City Council to ensure clear signage and safe student entry and exit is maintained. Year 7 Information Evening I look forward to meeting Year 7 parents / guardians this Wednesday at our Year 7 Information evening. Year 9 – 12 Subject Changes As all Year 9 – 12 students undertook a thorough selection process last year, no changes will be made in the first week of school unless there are exceptional circumstances. Once students have had time to experience their subjects, restricted subject changes may be considered for some students in the 2nd week of term. Changes for Semester Two electives will be available closer to the start of Term 3. VCE 2013 Dux & Awards Ceremony On Friday 14th February the College will recognise students who demonstrated excellence in their VCE studies at a School Assembly. The names of Award winners can be found on Pages 5 & 6 of this newsletter.

Principal’s Review

Welcome everyone to a new year and I hope everyone had a great Christmas and a safe and happy new year.

On Tuesday 18th February 2014, a Summative Review of Mr. Mark Sheehan, Principal of Catholic Regional College Melton will take place.

In the canteen this year you will notice a few changes— We are no longer using Coca-cola for our drinks supplier but have brought on board Schweppes and deleted all high sugar drinks and substituted them with Pepsi Next and Pepsi Max and flavoured mineral waters as you will see on your menus (which will be available on line but if you would like a hard copy please feel free to come and see me in the canteen). Please also note the new healthy salad range that we have—Hokkien noodle salad, tuna or tomato pasta salads, crunchy noodle salad with chicken and also the fabulous salad shakes (vegetarian, chicken, ham or tuna). Also please be aware we are no longer selling a lot of our confectionery lines—for eg. Red skins, heart pops, red frogs, snakes alive, raspberries. We will have new healthier options available over the counter so please come and have a look at what is available. Please note if you want to make sure you don’t miss out on what you want please put an order into the canteen in the morning and this will avoid you having to line up and also get disappointed in missing out on what you wanted. Recess orders can also be done before school and then no line up is necessary. As per previous years volunteers would be greatly appreciated and these hours credit your P & F fees. Volunteers are required between 10am and approx. 2pm and lunch is provided.

In the penultimate year of the Principal’s contract, a summative appraisal of the Principal’s performance will be conducted. The particular focus of this appraisal will be on the provision of advice to the Church Authority in the matter of a further contract for the Principal. Some Staff and Parents will be invited to attend an interview. Should you not be invited, but wish to have input into this review process via the completion of a questionnaire, I ask that you contact Mrs. Samantha Frazetto, Mr Sheehan’s PA, at Catholic Regional College Melton on 9743 6522, or collect a survey from the College Reception. Please return the questionnaire to Mrs. Frazzetto by Thursday 13th February.
