Dear Parents and Students, Fathers Day Breakfast Last Saturday morning, Rebekah Hibbard, Jacinta Guirguis, Lucy Taylor and Ellie Martin attended the Father’s Day Breakfast at St Bernard’s Bacchus Marsh. According to one observer at the Parish, “The CRC students were punctual, efficient, polite, well presented and a pleasure to work with. The school and their parents should be very proud. It is always a delight to work with students from CRC and this weekend was no different.” Well done Rebekah, Jacinta, Lucy and Ellie. SACCSS Athletics Well it was meant to be springtime in Melbourne, but it felt like Mawson station at the SACCSS Athletics carnival at Albert Park on Monday. Our students competed well in the trying conditions and they were well supported by staff, Natalie Bourke, Jordan Syme, Rob de Wit, Emma Brown and Jordan Reithofer and parents on the day. Notable achievements were: Laughlan Orr - Under 15 Boys Champion, Luke Heaney - Under 16 Boys Champion and Emily Kro - Under 17-20 Girls Champion and Montana Djatschenko - record Under 16 Girls Triple Jump. The College also won the following divisions: Intermediate Boys Champions, Intermediate Girls Champions, Intermediate Aggregate Champions, Senior Girls Champions and Senior Aggregate Champions. Full School Assembly At our recent school assembly, the students had the opportunity to hear from our local Federal Member of Parliament, Mr Brendan O’Connor about the importance of achieving your best and working hard whilst at school. He witnessed the acknowledgement of our School Spirit award winners for Term Two. It was also a great opportunity for Mr O’Connor to witness the generosity and charity of our students with the presentation of cheques being made to Hope Street and I Am More from their fund raising efforts on Celebration Day. As a community we raised a total of $11,338.80. The funds were equally divided between Hope Street and I Am More and Brother Beausang College. A cheque of $ 3,779.60 was presented to Ms Donna Bennet from Hope Street and Ms Emma Lucas from I am More. They were most grateful and thankful to the students for their financial support. The remaining funds were sent to Brother Beausang College in Embulbul, Nairobi, Kenya. Students who participated in the recent winter sleep out also announced they had raised over $2800 to support those left homeless as a result of domestic violence by donating funds to McAuley Community Services for Women. The assembly finished with a great musical performance by the Ensemble.

National eSmart Week National eSmart Week, September 4-8, is an initiative developed by the Alannah & Madeline Foundation, in partnership with Telstra Foundation. The web is a great place to learn, be creative and stay connected, but with one in seven young Australians found to be suffering from cyber bullying, and the many other challenges young people face online, it’s important that we invest in giving our students the skills they need to be responsible digital citizens. That’s why we’re participating in the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s National eSmart Week - along with hundreds of other schools and libraries - to show our commitment to cyber safety, wellbeing and digital inclusion. The eSafety Office provides some excellent resources for parents, students and schools of the digital world we now live and rely on. Check out the following link for parents https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent Take Away Deliveries All students are not permitted to organise for takeaway food deliveries to be made to the College during school hours. Students can order their lunch from the canteen. We also ask you as parents to not organise this for them. If food is delivered it will be confiscated and can be collected at the end of the day from the main office. Thank you for your support.

Respectful Relationships

The College has recently joined in partnership with CRC North Keilor and St Albans to be involved in the roll out of the Respectful Relationships program released by the Victorian Government. The Government is investing $21.8 million, in response to the Royal Commission into Family Violence, to roll out a holistic approach to Respectful Relationships across schools and early childhood services. Victorian schools are being supported to review their practices and policies, and model respectful relationships and gender equality across the whole school community. A presentation has already been made to staff and some staff have attended external workshops as part of our involvement. The unacceptable high rates of family violence, in particular violence against women and their children, are well documented. We know that cultural change is necessary and that the education setting can play an integral role in this. A good education is about more than simply getting good marks. It is about becoming a member of society and succeeding in life – knowing how to build respectful relationships is key to achieving this. The YouTube link below is the findings from the Youth Australians' Attitudes Towards Violence Against Women report (the Youth Report), which focuses on the responses given by 1,923 young people aged between 16–22 years https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuIIr9Dy_YI&feature=youtu.be Robert Blackley Deputy Principal-Students From the Deputy Principal (Staff) 2018 Year 9 Subject Selections Year 8 students and families please note that 2018 Year 9 Elective choices are due to homeroom teachers tomorrow, September 6. Languages News

Last Friday, the Year 7s were involved in Languages Day where an array of activities were on offer. Activities included: an Indonesian Dance Workshop; Ciao Italy Dance History show, whereby Emilio discussed the story of migration and then captivated the audience with a few traditional Italian dances such as the Tarantella; an Italian Drama show called: Mission Gnocchi, which was a hilarious show that taught the Year 7s how to make gnocchi. At lunchtime, a multicultural lunch was served by the canteen, followed by gelati, this dessert was a real treat. The day ended with an Education Perfect Competition which students had an hour to complete. Many thanks on a successful day, promoting the value of studying languages. Grazie mille, Claudia Russo - Head of Languages Languages Co-Ordinator

Dialogue in the Dark

On Wednesday August 16th, my Rite Journey group and I went into the city to experience Dialogue in the Dark. Dialogue in the Dark, in partnership with Guide Dogs Australia, is a simulated experience within a large space where we got to find out what it is like to be blind for an hour. Inside the space it was totally dark. Most of us were scared at first but in the end we all loved it. My experience was probably the same as others. I was so terrified to walk in because I thought I was going to bump into something. First we visited Birrarung Marr Park. We got to feel the trees and the surface changing underneath the canes we had. Then we visited the MCG. We could hear the crowd going wild in the stands. We went to the Victoria Market. We could smell the food around us. Next we went on a tram and could feel the vibrations through the seats. We went to our guide’s “apartment” and we had to try and find things around the room. We sat down on lounge chairs and talked to Kate, our guide, about her experience growing up blind and how she coped with her life without seeing. It was a beautiful experience and I would highly recommend it. Jessica Swasbrick - 9 Mackillop Author Visit Year 8 students were treated to a stimulating and moving presentation by international and local award winning author, Archie Fusillo, last Wednesday. As is customary around Childrens’ Book Week, the Library was fortunate to gain the services of this wondeful storyteller. Archie, of Italian heritage, was able to demonstrate the importance of recording the stories of family. He used his experiences of growing up the son of Italian migrants to recall events in his family and schooling life. Archie’s ability to tell stories that were funny, sad, moving and intelligent, had the Year 8 students hanging on his every word. Archie was very keen to highlight the importance of hard work as a means of achieving success, and that, in writing, one should record events in your life immediately for retelling at a later date. He was very keen to point out the significance of gathering stories from older members of families before those memories were lost or forgotten. Archie provided a fine example of a writer using his own life experiences as a wonderful source for inspiring his writing. Most students will be aware of Archie’s work, with the school having one of his most successful novels, “The Dons” studied at Year 9 for a number of years. It is hoped that the Year 8 students of CRC Melton will be inspired by the example of Archie as they work their way through their schooling.
