6th August, 2013 Reflection Ever generous God, You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop to live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely or needy. With confidence in your generous providence and joining with Saint Mary MacKillop we ask that you grant our request. We ask that our faith and hope be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust and openness. Ever generous God hear our prayer. We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen. (Feast of Mary of the Cross is Thursday 8th August)

Opening of St Catherine’s of Siena Church

Lone Pine

It was indeed a moment in time on Saturday night for those many people who count themselves as Parishioners in the Catholic Church at Melton. Archbishop Dennis Hart, together with eight concelebrating Priests, opened the new Church in front of a packed house of locals and special guests. The spire stands tall on Bulmans Road for all those who pass by and indeed anyone who visits Melton. A relic of Saint Mary MacKillop, who travelled these parts 100 years ago, was placed in the Sacred Oil Cabinet on the Altar of the new Church.

The College has been fortunate to receive a Lone Pine sapling to be planted in our school grounds as a reminder of the sacrifice made by Australian and New Zealand soldiers on August 6, 1915. As people would be aware the Lone Pine is a poignant symbol of the enduring ANZAC spirit. We will be writing more about this over the next two years as we approach 2015 - the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli. For parents and students who would like to read more about the meaning behind the Lone Pine this webpage may be an interesting starting point: http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/lone -pine-from-seeds-to-a-living-memorial.htm Mark Sheehan Principal

St Catherine of Siena Church will be a gathering place for the Catholic people of Melton. We pray that the Church be a place of worship and faith as the present Parishioners gather to celebrate our Catholic heritage and hand on the legacy of past Parishioners to future generations.

2014 Subject Selections

Re-enrolment 2014

Year 10 and Year 11 students need to submit their Initial Subject Selection sheet along with their Web Preferences Receipt by this Friday, August 9. Numbers will then be processed and initial blockings completed. Students will be given their initial allocations later in the term. Year 9 students and families have their 2014 Information Evening this Wednesday, August 7. The evening begins at 7pm and will explain the selection process for Year 10 subjects and the VINCIT program.

During Term 3 a formal re-enrolment process will take place. This process enables the College to comply with a CEO requirement regarding enrolment data which is due in Term 4. The actual enrolment prediction for the 2014 school year will influence the recurrent funding for the College.

Student Activities This weekend, the College continues to offer activities for students. Some of our senior students and staff head off to the snow (Mt Buller) on Friday afternoon. Hopefully the recent snow falls will mean good skiing over the weekend. Other students and staff will also head off to compete in the Sydney City to Surf over the weekend. Best wishes to all competitors and I am sure both activities will provide positive experiences for our students. John Christie Deputy Principal (Staff)

The Parish Priests and Finance Committee are currently drawing up lists of families who are behind in their Thanksgiving envelopes and/or school fees. To avoid an interview please make an effort to have your fees and Thanksgiving envelopes up to date. Re-enrolment paperwork will be sent home this week and will be due, with a $100 per child re-enrolment fee, on Thursday 29th August. Fathers Day Communion Breakfast 2013 A Fathers Day Communion Breakfast will be held on Saturday 31st August commencing with Mass at 7.30am and followed by a home cooked breakfast in the Parish Centre. This year’s Guest speaker is Fr Gerald O’Collins SJ author of the recently launched book “On the Left Bank of the Tiber”. Fr Gerald will talk about “Living and Teaching in Rome for Thirty Years”. Fr O’Collins was there for the last years of Pope Paul VI, experienced at first hand the cruelly short pontificate of John Paul l (“the smiling pope”) and appeared on television for the final sickness and death of John Paul ll. He was on the BBC platform for the election of Benedict XVl. In 2006 he was created a Companion of the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC), the highest civil honour granted through the government of Australia. This is an event not to be missed. Registration can be made by emailing the parish bacchusmarsh@cam.org.au or by phone 5367 2069. RSVP by 27 August, 2013. Parent Access Module (PAM) The College is planning to make more student learning details available through PAM. We encourage families to log on and regularly check for new information.
