7th May, 2013 Reflection A Mother's Love There are times when only a mother's love can understand our tears, can soothe our disappointments and calm all of our fears. There are times when only a mother's love can share the joy we feel when something we've dreamed about quite suddenly is real. There are times when only a mother's faith can help us on life's way and inspire in us the confidence we need from day to day. For a mother's heart and a mother's faith and a mother's steadfast love were fashioned by the angels and sent from God above. --Author Unknown

School Photos - May 21 Full school photos are scheduled for Tuesday 21st May. Envelopes will be distributed to students this week. Arthur Reed Photos also provide the opportunity for family photos. Students will be required to wear full winter uniform for the photos. If a student has PE or a related activity they will need to bring their PE uniform to school and change. Further details will be published in coming newsletters. Parent Information Evening for Year 11 & 12 Approximately 30 parents attended the Year 11 and 12 parents evening held last Thursday May 2, a disappointing number considering the information presented on the evening and letter of invitation was given to each student the week before. The feedback from those who did attend found it extremely helpful and motivating. The evening was a follow up to the workshop the Year 12 students were involved in earlier in the day. The presenter Darren Pereira from Success Integrated engaged and equipped the audience with a range of strategies to help them as parents in supporting their son or daughter in their VCE years. He presented the concept of Growth Mindset, that is, “excellence is about effort, it motivates and I must work hard to achieve”. The parents shared examples of growth mindset statements: “great effort”, “your commitment to your studies is fantastic”, “proud of your efforts”.

To help students with organisation Darren presented a homework/study plan that includes, study periods, meal times, work and sporting commitments. Time management can be more effective by planning and prioritising tasks, chunking and breaking down activities and then allocating time frames. As Darren suggested 1 minute in planning saves 4 minutes in doing. He also emphasised the importance of reviewing notes regularly because we forget more than 1/2 of what we learn within 1 hour, 2/3 within a day, therefore students need to do their first review immediately, followed up with a short review of notes within 24 hours to correct any errors and clarify any misunderstandings. A review of the week’s notes is then undertaken at the end of the week of approximately 1 hour, further reviews are done once per month and then again after a month. He also presented the notion of listening to Baroque music while studying as it induces relaxed alertness and increased recall performance. Further information, study templates and inspirational videos can be found on Darren’s website or facebook page: www.successintegrated.com/parentfacebook.com/ successintegrated.com.au Year 11 Study Skills Workshop Year 11 students this Thursday will be involved in a study skills workshop conducted by an organisation called Elevate Education, a group of university students who relate closely to the experience of VCE students.

Sunday 6th May - The Great Train Race A small number of students braved a cool morning to face the great train race, to run from Belgrave to Emerald along the train line approximately 13.2 kilometres against the Puffing Billy Steam Locomotive. Nicholas Benca was the only student able to beat the train with a time of 53:43 with all others doing extremely well. I would like to thank Mr McCann for his preparation and looking after us on the day. I would highly recommend this run to any other students wishing to battle the train in what is a well spirited event. Joshua Seymour & Hannah Taylor Sports Captains

Naplan Testing Years 7 & 9 2013

Our dates and times are as follows:

The 2013 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) for Years 7 and 9 students will be held on Tuesday 14 May, Wednesday 15 May and Thursday 16 May. NAPLAN tests assess student knowledge and skills in Writing, Reading, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy.

Tuesday, May 14

The results of the tests provide information for students, parents, teachers and school leadership which can be used to improve student achievement. All Years 7 and 9 students are expected to participate in the NAPLAN tests. Exemptions may be granted to students with significant intellectual disabilities and to students who have been learning English for less than one year. The College’s Learning Support staff will contact the parents of those students who may be eligible for exemption. Parental consent is required before any support due to disability or exemption is granted. Support can be arranged for students with disabilities, if the student regularly uses similar support for classroom assessment tasks. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the relevant Year Level Coordinator. If, after consultation, you decide to withdraw your child, you must sign a Student Withdrawal form. These forms are available at the college. During the test week, catch-up tests will be available for individual students who are absent on test days. These students may undertake catch-up tests on the days in the test week after the scheduled test, up to and including Friday, May 17. Parents will receive a personal NAPLAN report later in the year. The report will describe each student’s particular skills in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. The report will also show performance in relation to national minimum standards. These describe the minimum acceptable standards for students across Australia. I am confident that the information you receive as a result of your child’s participation in the NAPLAN tests will be valuable in helping you to assess your child’s progress in literacy and numeracy. For more information about the tests, please visit the VCAA website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au or the NAP website at www.nap.edu.au

These times are stipulated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority to ensure all schools are undertaking tests at common times. Students will need to have a ruler, an eraser and book to read (if they finish early) as well as their books for the remainder of each period class of each session unless told otherwise (as most tests will not take a full 1 period time allotment). Can I particularly stress the need for all students to have their own calculator for the Thursday morning test? Students should also check that fresh batteries have been fitted. Any student away will be advised of a catch up time on the Friday if available. A brochure outlining basic information to parents about NAPLAN will be distributed to all Year 7 and Year 9 students this week to take home. If you have any questions, please contact me at College. Senior Drama Excursion

Peter Pan This year’s College production of Peter Pan involves a scene that takes place within a nursery. As such, we are in desperate need of old doonas, blankets, doona covers and pillows. The production team would be very appreciative of any families who have any such bedding that they no longer require and who are willing to donate to our production. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are able to assist us in this matter. Clare O'Sullivan Performance Co-ordinator cosullivan@crcmelton.com.au Impetigo (school sores) A case of impetigo/school sores has been diagnosed in a student in Year 8. Homework Club

Homework club will run from Wednesday 9th May until Wednesday 19th June.

Last Wednesday the Year 10, 11 and 12 drama students attended their first performance from the VCAA drama list for 2013. Beached by Melissa Bubnic, is a contemporary Australian play that follows for a short period, the life of a family whilst they are taping a reality television series. The performance was an ideal example for our senior drama students, of non-naturalistic performance work that relied heavily upon the stagecraft elements of lighting, sound and multi-media to convey this non-naturalism to the audience. This performance will provide the stimulus for school assessed course work, as well as the Year 12 drama written exam. Senior drama students were also given the opportunity to attend the VCE Season of Excellence on Friday evening. This performance was a showcase of several high scoring Year 12 drama solos from last year. It was a magnificent opportunity for CRC students to view high calibre performance work, from students from across the state, who received near perfect scores for their solo performances.
