crdf builds energy partnerships
“Science, technology and innovation proceed more rapidly and more costeffectively when insights, costs and risks are shared; and so many of the challenges that science and technology will help us meet are global in character. And that’s why my administration is ramping up participation in—and our commitment to—international science and technology cooperation across the many areas where it is clearly in our interest to do so.” —President Barack Obama, Remarks at the National Academy of Sciences Annual Meeting, April 27, 2009
President Obama understands the importance of motivating the world’s scientific community to work more proactively together on global challenges, including energy. CRDF urges his Administration and Congress to take the next step and implement a series of initiatives that catalyze the U.S. scientific community to work with foreign counterparts to address urgent global energy and climate change challenges. CRDF is an Effective, Efficient Implementer of Energy Initiatives: • Fourteen years of success implementing international scientific partnerships, awarding and implementing over 3,000 grants valued at more than $160 million and involving 13,000 scientists in over 30 countries. As a unique NGO created by Congress, CRDF is a key partner in implementing government and private programs on a range of priorities, including energy and climate change. • Leverages funding from the U.S. government and partner government organizations overseas in a new climate change competition that engages U.S. and Eurasian scientists in new projects to address key energy and climate change challenges. While focused on U.S.–Eurasia cooperation, this program is applicable to other regions around the world.
• Builds sustainable institutions globally that enable foreign scientists to develop the capacity to work with U.S. scientists on pressing research challenges. One such example is the newly established Research and Education Center for Energy Efficiency Technologies founded in cooperation with USAID and the Ukrainian Government. • Maintains a long history supporting the U.S. Department of Energy including project management support to DOE’s Global Initiatives for Proliferation Prevention program. A Broad, Responsive Scientific Network • CRDF has unparalleled networks for those seeking partners for scientific or precommercial research and development, including a network of over 23,000 U.S. scientists in all disciplines to conduct peer review of international collaborative projects. • Sponsors international scientific panels, conferences and symposia on energy technology commercialization, development, research and international technology transfer. CRDF events link foreign researchers with U.S. companies working on alternative energy. Cutting-Edge Innovation and Commercialization CRDF’s innovation programs link U.S. businesses with promising processes and technologies developed abroad to: • Build innovation infrastructure in emerging economies • Encourage technology entrepreneurship and commercialization by designing and implementing a wide range of programs that support applied research • Work with a wide network of partners to support new product development
“We have a shared responsibility with other nations—and a shared opportunity—to create a generation of new green jobs, reduce energy bills for families and address the global climate crisis.” —Dr. Steven Chu, Secretary of Energy, March, 2009
