SmartGrids ERA-Net ERA-Net Transport 5 november 2013
Introduction ERA-NET (European Research Area Network) is an instrument of the European Commission for enhancing Europe’s competitiveness in research. The essence is to pool scarce national and regional resources and to launch transnational calls for tenders and proposals for research projects. Two of these ERA-NETs, co-

“We're at the beginning of a development, facing major challenges.”
“Maybe we should make a casebook, where every country puts in three or four projects. Two pages per project, just to indicate what’s going on and who does it.”

“Today, we will find out where collaborations are possible.”

“ERA-NET Transport has six main challenges, of which the biggest ones are the launch of two European calls for proposals. The first one has successfully been launched in March 2013 and has just past its deadline for proposal submission. In spring 2015 we will launch the second large flagship call

What are your expectations of today?
“I hope that we can form some kind of collaboration today. What kind of collaboration and with whom, that I don’t know. I will keep all options open.”
10
Joint event ERA-NET Smart Grids-ERA-NET Transport
“I hope that we can exchange our ideas and opinions and find mutual understanding on important topics and issues. We have the chance to solve these problems not only for our countries but Europe as a whole.”
“First of all I am very impressed by this new and modern building. It is a very comfortable and stimulating environment, which will help us connect with each other. Even with the different culture and social backgrounds I am positive the two different ERA networks will connect.”

“It would be a pity if you have the best researchers in the world, and they'll go to America or leave science to work for the government. We have to make research attractive.

13
What do you consider as the most valuable outcome of today?
“Well, I think today is a success. First of all we we are privileged to work in a very inspirational environment. The sessions are very interactive and give us as attendees the opportunity to communicate effectively with each other. Which is also necessary because today we need to bring the two different ERA networks together, and find mutual interests and benefits. And by my estimation that is what we are going to achieve today.
14
Joint event ERA-NET Smart Grids-ERA-NET Transport
“I hope we can come up with some kind of mechanism to make ERA-Net Plus a success. In my opinion the first step would be getting the right people on board and activate them. Today is therefore perfect to do some groundwork and create a solid foundation for the continuation of the Horizon 2020 project.”
“The synergy, collaborations and active participation as a group were very good today. We have created a couple of pillars but unfortunately not everyone was able to attend today. This makes it difficult to go through the process of verification.”

“At the moment there is ‘no ready solution’. Currently we have a list of best practices and flexible funding for a couple of our projects. But with the right marketing and promotion it is possible to create a sustainable supporting structure.”

“It would be a great step forward to bring all national projects and initiatives regarding smart grids and electrical mobility together on an international level. It will give us the opportunity to discuss and share our ideas and knowledge with each other.”
“The stakeholders of a smart community are dynamic and therefore the movement will be bottom up. It needs to be facilitated though, but it doesn’t need a facilitator owner. It will enable smart individuals and we need to identify and integrate open data flows.”

Conclusions
“Lots of things today were very inspiring for me. The most important though, was the community building and networking in an informal way. It’s great to meet all these people in person. I can really use a lot of their knowledge for our ENT Platform.”
40
Joint event ERA-NET Smart Grids-ERA-NET Transport
“I think the best idea of today is a long conference on the topic.”

The ENT Platform. “One big coorporation tool”
“The goal of our platform is to bring together project owners, so we're more than just a database for funding programs. We focus on our community function, which sets us apart from other platforms. It's open source, which means we can easily adapt new innovations and needs of our users. The motivation to build ENT Platform is transnational information exchange. We made the tool very user-friendly, using smart filters for the searching and added great recommendation-options. It's very easy to find your perfect match, and save your research and new connections in the tool.” The first version of AustriasTech's ENT Platform will be available next March. After a testing phase in summer, the final product will be ready in October 2014.

“I’ve got a positive feeling about this afternoon. There seems to be room for a more bottom-up approach, which I didn’t expect. I see a lot of European collaborations where people from the ministries only look at their own topics, or don’t have the mandate to actually make decisions. But here I experienced room for more talk about the people and their needs.”
44
Joint event ERA-NET Smart Grids-ERA-NET Transport
“We made a good start today. We don’t want to divide the matter in too small bits, but we have to keep looking for cross-interests.”

Topics that have been identified and prioritised as the topics for mutual cooperation:
- Demand side management - Communication and security - Smart market - Combined RES - Pan European Network - Forecasting techniques/leveraging information flows (combined) - User behaviour and involvement
