keep supporting
one another
Dear UBE readers, As always, thank you to all those who take the time to read our publication, as well as the wonderful contributors who bring this magazine to life each month. Firstly, I want to express my love for the people of Beirut who have experienced misfortune in the past few weeks; our prayers and well wishes are with the whole of Lebanon and it’s citizens. I also want to send a reminder that although this year has been tough, we have to keep supporting one another and help communities and local businesses; it will get better if we all stick together. This months issue is dedicated to the stories of British expats worldwide who kindly offered us some tips which are relevant to every expats journey, as well as some very beneficial information regarding staying positive and in good spirit.

WORLD NEWS
beirut explosions The disastrous explosion in Beirut on the 4th August has caused at least 150 deaths and left more than 6’000 injured. Many have lost their homes, and left people of Beirut heartbroken. This catastrophic event has angered the communities of Lebanon, and the anti-government protesters have taken to the streets, yet again. Thousands of protestors gathered outside the parliament in the city of Beirut. The blast was caused by a reported 2,7500 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, which was stored away in a storage space near the city’s port. The government was asked to keep this hazardous material safe, when a cargo ship headed for Mozambique encountered some technical issues and decided to offload in the Beirut port in 2013. The ammonium nitrate was never removed, regardless of the multiple letters received from customs officials asking the government to safely dispose of these. The explosion took a huge toll on Lebanon's economy, due to the damages caused which are estimated to be in the billions. Lebanon witnessed uproar, and protestors rising up against their government in October 2019, when new tax laws were announced to be introduced in 2020. The new tax regulations included additional tax on petrol, tobacco and communication services such as WhatsApp. The protestors stood against the government, demanding a more stable economy and better employment opportunities. Fighting against corruption and the sectarian rule, the protestors carried on flooding the streets for weeks, and only began to quiet down when the state of emergency and worldwide lockdowns began to set in, amidst the coronavirus spread. Once again, the protestors are back on the streets following the explosion, and this time they’re putting all their energy into ending the corruption and standing up against their political leaders. They’re no longer prepared to accept the dysfunctional system and witness a collapse of their economy. On August 10th, the Prime Minister of Lebanon, Hassan Diab, resigned following accusations of negligence and corruption from the community. Soon after, the environmental, information and justice ministers followed suit. The social unrest in the Middle East continues; we witness it in Palestine, Yemen, Iraq, Iran, and many other parts of the Eastern world. We must speak up and raise awareness of political issues in various parts of the world, and continue to support the communities that don’t have as much voice in the mainstream media. Be the voice for the voiceless. Written by Paula Rapsiewicz Ube-3
ECONOMY
Financial Outlook
The Euro vs the British Pound has remained fairly stable and I see no reason why this shouldn’t be the case for the foreseeable future.
Regardless of Trumps’ outlandish style, ability to ruffle feathers and often politically incorrect behaviour, he has proven to be incredibly resilient and should not be written off just yet. Written by David Byrne
In last months’ issue we did flag that the US Dollar looks set to come under pressure, and that is precisely what we have seen with £1 now buying close to $1.32 whereas Eur will purchase $1.20. The confusing factor regarding the United States is why their stock markets are in such buoyant mood given that the fallout from the Covid Pandemic is likely to hit American business in devastating fashion. As is normal in times of crisis there has been a rush for Gold seeing the price of a Troy Ounce as high as $ 2,074 at the beginning of August. We did see a subsequent sell off to $ 1,862 but the buyers have returned taking the price back to $2,000. Personally, I would be careful paying too high because of the fact that although the asset is appreciating in price, all profits are being made in US Dollars which is depreciating. So, up at these levels, it’s a case of the right hand gives and left takes away.
election Going forward the news between now and the 3rd of November will be all about the US election. Michelle Obama is the latest person of note to put her weight behind Joe Biden saying that Trump is quite simply ‘The wrong President’. Ube-4

COVER STORY
The Great Awakening & Healy:
Harriet A elisabeth “Being spiritually disconnected is like having a Ferrari in the garage and not using it.” We are all spiritual beings. The definition of “being spiritual” is if anything a definition of the level of awareness of the essence that we are an extension of. Call it source, god, force or universe, it is all the same. It is the energy field that we are connected to. We conform into separateness through diversity of religious believes. We have grouped ourselves into nations with borders, defining ourselves as “us and them”. Our beliefs and how we look at the world is a reflection depending on the society we have been brought up in. Colored by which part of the world we are in and which family we belong to.
A population that is disconnected from the core becomes masses of people that are easily led to believe what they are told to believe. There is immense power in being “awake” connected, aligned and open to the intelligence that is available to flow freely through any and all human and living beings..
If we don’t fight with life, life simply helps us. -MitenUbe-5
It is a little tool that helps me to align my bio energetic field with the Universal field of intelligence. Beautiful synchronicity of events and meetings happens when we are aligned with life. Being truly aligned with source can express extreme intelligence, like flashes of realizations and ideas that pop up in our mind from seemingly nowhere. Extreme intelligence is not something learned. It is an expression out of perfect alignment with the universal field of intelligence. When there is no disbelief anything is possible, the intelligence can flow freely and take many form of expression. Ube-6
I believe we all have moments of “knowing. That gut feeling that kicks in when a difficult decision has to be made. That strong feeling of knowing that pulls us to make the least logical choice. That strong feeling is our intuition; the inner knowing that knows the overall picture, it knows what is around the corner, what comes next. To follow our inner guidance is powerful. When we are truly aligned life flows beautifully. Any and all healing we do whether it is physical or
COVER STORY emotional is to shred and move dense energy to release past experiences that has taken form as disease, stagnation and difficulties in life. As I got stranded in Bali in early March this year I happen to come across a woman that introduced me to my new love affair. It was divine synchronicity at play for sure. My love does not have a heart and a brain as such and if you think in terms of a man that would be a scary thought. No this love affair is not a man, it is a little tool that helps me to align my bio energetic field with the Universal field of intelligence. When my frequencies are being aligned with the universal frequencies magic things in life can manifest and for me it has been a beautiful dance of discovery and healing on many levels. My long time chronic pain has vanished. I am back to normal, completely mobile and none restricted by pain. I feel like my body has rejuvenated ten folds. I am still working on improving my eyesight and menopause symptoms and I am both curious and convinced they will improve, but that is for time to tell. Further more I use my love affair to sharpen my focus while working, raising my energy level when needed. I have improved the quality of my hair, nails, skin elasticity and my sleep has greatly improved. My “love affair” has saved me from outbreaks of mouth sores by telling me in advance what my body needed alignment with and it has helped me to detox and balance my mind. My love affair is called Healy and I carry it with me wherever I go.
To use a tool to bridge this field of intelligence with my body so I can heal is a self-healing activation of immense importance. Nothing is more important than my health. If I don’t have my health it affects every area of my life, so I absolutely priorities it. To call Healy a miracle maker is a big claim that obviously comes from my personal experience and is nothing that can be promised. However for me is has been a miracle to rid myself of the chronic pain that was a pest in my life for many years and it has been a joyful discovery path with many other unexpected positive effects. I am passionate to share this incredible little device with as many people as I possible can. I believe raising our frequency of love during the present time is the most important thing we can do for our health,
If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. -Nicola Tesla-
The German man Marcus Schmieke is the main brain behind Healy. As a young man he lived as a monk for many years and came to the realization he could better serve humanity by leaving the monk life. Instead he became a scientist and is today one of the worlds most renowned quantum physics. He invented the advanced frequency therapy equipment called TimeWaver. It has been used by thousands of therapists and clinics around the world for the last 14 years. To make frequency therapy for healing more accessible for everyone he joined forces with a incredible team of experts from around the world and developed this small portable device for personal usage called Healy. This little “miracle maker” has taken not only me by storm but is rapidly concurring the world. We have in our hands the next evolution within health care. It is a magnificent self-healing tool with 144000 different frequencies that can be customized to deliver the exact right frequencies every time it is being used. Technology can be destructive for humanity and it can be of immense beneficial service. It is all in the intention behind that matters. When the intention from a man who deeply honors our connection with source energy delivers a tool that bridge the universal field of intelligence with the physical body I listen. I listen because everything I have ever learned that is of any significant importance is that we are nothing but energy and we are all connected through this field of intelligence.
wellbeing and for the collective awakening. To self heal with total acceptance of who we are and love and accept others for who they are, we concur the evil forces that have devastated the planet and mankind with their greed and blind selfishness. To raise our frequency and love all is the most powerful thing we can do because love has no limits. Alignment with source has no limits.
Today scientists have proven that everything is energy. Well known and respected scientists and doctors like Dr Joe Dispenza, Bruce Lipman and Gregg Braden have lead the way for the understanding, acceptance and bridging between science and spirituality. We truly are living in exiting times where humanity is waking up to the understanding the core of what we are. The circus that goes on in the world today is a necessary purging for a world that is evolving.
The so-called great awakening is happening and it does require our willingness to see the world for what it is. We have lived behind a veil of illusion and it is not until we see the ugly truth that we can ascend to a more beautiful way of living for all of humanity and all living beings. I am convinced Healy plays an important bridging role between our physical awareness and source energy and the awakening of humanity. Once we understand the essence of what we are and raise and align our frequencies with the field of love, the ability to see behind the veil of illusion is less of a scary leap to take and the healing that takes place on our way there, becomes beautiful side effects of ultimate health and wellbeing. Love is the one and only answer. Harriet A Elisabeth

Battling Homesickness Being away from home, your family and friends, for long periods of time can take a toll on your mood and well-being. There are many expats battling various mental-health problems. In particular depression and anxiety. When moving abroad many expats are not lucky enough to have social groups and friendship circles in their new destinations; solitude quickly turns into loneliness and social settings, or the thought of making new friends, can start becoming anxiety triggers. Being homesick can cause overthinking, and in-turn make you irritable, pessimistic and unmotivated. Although experiencing homesickness is natural and a part of the expats journey, there are ways of dealing with our emotions, longingness and feelings of anxiety.
make your house a home Stop referring to your new place as ‘the flat’ or ‘the apartament’; it is now your home, and you have to make it one physically and mentally. Get back into your usual habits, decorate your home, make it comfortable for you and spend some time to settle into your new home, and make it feel familiar. Give it heart and soul! If you want to read more about making your house a home, head over to page 14 to read Emily Rogers feature. Don’t repress your feelings, but don't let them take over you It’s totally ok to have a cry once in a while! Moving abroad is exciting, fun and adventurous; but that doesn’t mean you won’t have worse days. Always acknowledge and validate your
emotions, if possible start journaling so that you can reflect on your thoughts. Do some meditation, talk to family and friends about how you’re feeling, try to calm your mind, and give yourself time; this journey isn't linear.
meet new people and make friends One of the best ways to settle into a new place is to surround yourself with supportive and understanding people. Making friends as an adult can seem intimidating, but there are ways of naturally connecting with like-minded individuals; you won’t be walking up to strangers on the street! Sign up to some classes you enjoy (yoga, gym, meditation, art workshops, etc.); this is a great way to meet new people, while doing something you enjoy. Go out to events, visit a local bar, and join local support groups on social media. In other words, improve your chances of bumping into people you connect with.
Take a break from socials Social media and mobile phones are a blessing for those living far from home; you can easily communicate with your family back home, FaceTime your loved ones any time of the day and keep up with all major life events of your loved ones via social media. As amazing as these tools are, we can get sucked into the feelings of ‘missing out’, which in-turn make us homesick. Schedule various times during the week to catch up with your friends and family back home, but try not to overdo it; instead, plan multiple trips back home throughout the year, so you have something to look forward to. Allow yourself time to get used to your new life, and remember to be present.
really know anyone and haven’t yet settled into, it’s easy to get out of routine and take on unhealthy habits. Do not spend all your time at home, on the sofa, with a take-away; this is the first step to self-negligence, and even depression. Plan days out and explore your new surroundings, try out some local cuisine which you can later replicate at home, visit local museums and find out if there are any events being held nearby. Also make sure to have some time to yourself each week and indulge in selfcare.
make a check-lists and bucket lists Moving abroad can be overwhelming, and often make us forget to prioritise and take action; this can lead to putting off important tasks, and add to the feeling of homesickness and anxiety. When you arrive, make a few lists of things that need to be sorted as soon as possible; this can include researching local amenities, transport links, setting up bill payments, sorting out your healthcare, setting up your internet and mobile providers or important documentation. Next, make a list of things that you can do to help you settle in; for instance start a gym membership, or sign up to a local class you’d like to attend. Lastly, the fun part! Make a bucket-list of all the things you must do in your new country of residence. It can be made up of adventurous activities, places you want to visit, or things you want to see. Most importantly, don’t forget to enjoy your experience abroad!
don’t neglect yourself Take time out for you! When moving to a new place alone, where you don’t

The American Dream USA Colorado; 7295 miles from Manchester UK I am a mum of two lively children - Archie, 4; and Darcy, 2. We have a passion for family travel, and my dream is to educate my kids through travel and experiencing different cultures, so when the relocation opportunity came up I was all up for the change! However, selfishly I knew my life was going to take a huge turnaround; and it did - for the better. I had no idea this relocation was going to be such a rollercoaster ride! So... where do I begin?! The journey began in Jan 2018, when this life changing opportunity came to the family table; my husband was head hunted for the USA Olympic Taekwondo Coach position. I was 5 months pregnant with our second child, going through the process of creating my online business, and comfortably running my mobile beauty business from home.

How was this going to turn out? Was I ready to give up everything I’d worked for to live the ‘American Dream’?
firstly - ViSAS! How hard is this process? This alone took over a year to get finalized with an immigration lawyer; the paperwork was endless! But I stayed positive, reminding myself that it’s all for a good reason. Whilst the visas were still in process, we had to start house hunting. We didn’t want to rent as we’d heard the renting market was ridiculous! High rental prices and limited flexibility on extending tenancy, which we knew we would need. We were totally disillusioned with the property market! Suddenly our budget doubled and the process of getting a USA mortgage, without any credit history, was our next challenge! Saying that, I would highly recommend Guaranteed

Rate for expats looking for a good loan offer. They worked with us through the whole 18 month process, answered my million questions and advised us in terms of our best options. Once we had our finances sorted, then came the decision on where to relocate to. Obviously we had no idea on which areas were good, so we were literally relying on Google and a few of my husbands new colleagues to guide us to the best possible areas within our budget. Having a young family, access to excellent medical care and schooling ruled our focus. In March 2018, 5 months pregnant at the time, I flew from Manchester to Colorado solo. I spent 4 days in the city to see if I could see myself settling into Colorado Springs. Could I see myself bringing up my family in the USA without a family or friend support network? So many questions running through my head. I knew this was going to be a very lonely journey to begin with, as my husband travels very often for work reasons. I knew I had to be proactive with getting myself a social network; so I joined a few mommy groups on social media to put the feelers out there. Fortunately, I found an incredible Facebook group, called ‘Hike It Baby’, which saved my sanity! Day one of landing on US soil, I contacted a mom I’d been chatting with whilst in the UK and went to visit her. I’m not an overly social person so this was a huge step for me. For all mommas out there, I’d highly recommend checking out Hike It Baby! No judgement, no cliques, just a massively welcoming group of ladies! We’ve been here for 10 months now, and through this group, my kiddos and myself, have explored so many places, joined so many events and made some lifelong friends.
On day two of my solo trip, I was put in contact with an incredible realtor (Michelle Cohn) who I can now call a lifelong friend. The endless hotel pick ups, driving around Colorado Springs, arranging last minute viewings, and even taking the time to take me to some must see locations (Garden of the Gods) reeled me in. In the end my heart was set on a new-build in Monument.
brakes on, back to reality in the Uk!! With my return to the UK, came the continuous scheduling of phone calls (-7hrs behind) with builders, mortgage lenders, realtors, etc; emails, DocuSign’s and thousands of contracts to read through. It was a scary time - signing life changing documents, whilst still not being 100% sure on the USA buying process! We had to put massive amounts of faith in these people. In midst of all this, I was due at any time, and we were both still full time working! It was chaotic! Three to four months in, we lost the first plot of land due to our visas not clearing on time. We did, however, manage to secure another plot of land; via a FaceTime call! We signed on the plot, which we could only see via video call, so you could say our trust in our realtor was second to none. But, to our surprise, it all worked out for the best! I’m a strong believer everything happens for a reason. However, our stress levels got to the point many times where we nearly pulled the plug on the whole thing! Finally, we got to doing our rounds of goodbyes. So, here we are! Ten months later, having survived the relocation struggles and challenges. We absolutely LOVE our Colorado lifestyle! I’m a full-time mum, but I love having the time and ability to run a business online, around my passions and hectic family life, from anywhere in the world! I realised pretty quickly, when we relocated from one end of the world to the other, that if our goal of living a life on our terms, and being able to regularly travel with our family was going to be possible, then I needed a portable business. FOOD
spice up your kitcHen? This month we bring you a quick and easy Asian stir-fry. This dish doesn’t require many ingredients, is very tasty, and can be served with or without meat. It’s a great dish to serve up to your friends for dinner night, or something to fix up quickly after a long day of work.
ingredients • Garlic • Red onion • Mushrooms • Baby corn • Spring onions • Fresh chilli • Red and yellow bell pepper • Garlic powder • Cabbage • Romano or other green beans • Dark soy sauce • Olive oil • Chilli paste (optional) • Hot paprika • Oregano • Himalayan salt • Sesame seeds (optional) • Cashew nuts • Egg noodles • Meat - chicken or beef (optional) Chop the garlic, onions and chillies; heat up some oil in a wok and add these to the pan. If you are using meat in your recipe, add this now. Add your spices now if you’re using meat, or you can add them later if your stir-fry is vegetarian. Slice your mushrooms and cabbage, then chop up the baby corn, peppers and green beans to any size you like. Add these to the wok and stir-fry on a medium to high heat. If you are making a vegetarian version of this meal, add your spices now. Chop up your spring onions and add them to the wok. Add as much soy sauce as desired. In a separate pan, fry up some cashew nuts in a little olive oil. Put some noodles in a pot of boiling water, and drain them when they’re ready. Drain the noodles, top with your stir-fry (or mix in the wok, if preferred) . Place some cashews on top, and sprinkle with a pinch (or handful, if you’re me!) of sesame seeds. Voila! A Slice of Advice
Having lived in Madrid for over a year now and feeling pretty established (at times), I have been looking back and reflecting on all the things I have learnt from living abroad. But was I really as prepared as I thought I was for this great lifestyle change? I remember the invaluable parting advice from friends, family, and colleagues as we said our emotional goodbyes, but I wonder how much of it I took on board amidst the hugs, tears and when-will-we-see-you-agains. Perhaps it is only now that I realise the value of their wise words. There were messages of encouragement, people telling me eagerly to enjoy the good life – the sunshine, the siestas and the sangria, which I have certainly done, but there were a few nuggets that really stuck with me…
“you have no idea how much your horizons will broaden” Someone told me that by moving abroad, I would be exposed to a world I didn’t even know existed; culturally, socially, career-wise. And whilst the latter is still up for debate, I still replay this conversation and realise just how true it is. “I’m Ube-20
only going to Spain”, I thought at the time but when I reflect on the past year and all the things I have seen and heard, achieved and learnt (including un poco de Español), I am struck by how every single day has been an adventure and I would never have had these experiences if I hadn’t taken the plunge.
“never turn down an invitation” Has turned into a motto that I repeat to myself anytime I am lucky enough to receive one. View every occasion as an opportunity because you never know just who you might meet and you will always come away richer for it - with a phone number, a new friend, a job offer, a language exchange or at the very least, a good night out!
“without bread, it’s not worth it” Since living in Spain, I have never eaten so much pan! It appears at every meal, with every tapa and tempts you from every bakery window in the barrio. And while I have no desire for the sweet shelf loaf, (which is certainly no Warburtons), the freshly baked baton is not only a temptation, but part of daily life. Mopping up all manner of salsas with your bread from the basket, which is starting to harden a little in the heat only adds to the delight of relaxed Mediterranean dining.
“el tiempo es oro” Time is Gold. In other words, time is the most precious thing we will ever have, so spend it well. I am inspired by the
priorities here, which include la familia, spending time outdoors, taking gentle strolls in the evening, good food, good wine, and enjoying the sunshine. The slower pace of life has made me realise that it isn’t necessary to “fill” my time but to appreciate more the simple things in life. (Note: These wise words came from the same individual who passed on the previous gem, and I do wonder how much of his precious time is spent eating pan)!
“Assume life will be different” that way you will be pleasantly surprised when you find things that remind you of home. I remember the first time I heard a Scottish accent in a crowd and felt instantly connected to the stranger, or when I spied Dairy Milk chocolate in a swanky supermercado and stocked up on the over-priced bars! These overwhelming feelings of comfort don’t come along often but when they do, I savour the moments. Other times I wake up with enough mosquito bites to join the dots or am confronted by a cucaracha and am starkly reminded that some things are just…different!
The phrase “you learn something new every day” has never been truer, and whenever I am exposed to fresh challenges (particularly linguistic ones), I hear the voices of the wellwishers in the back of my mind, and I thank them silently for their words of wisdom. And while I am yet to benefit from a glittering career opportunity, I have made friends, I spend my time doing things I enjoy, and I do love life! I would encourage anyone to spend some of their own precious tiempo de oro enjoying this incredible and fascinating country. I guarantee there will be plenty of bread. Because without bread…
It's not worth it!
And finally, “if you love it, don’t leave” – simple. I’ve realised that beginning life in a new country is hugely exciting, terrifying, and immensely rewarding. Being forced out of your comfort zone can only be a good thing and while I have been challenged, tested and flustered, I have also felt proud because with every experience, I grow.

dream meanings
Dreams are an integral part of understanding our psyche and emotions. Most times they carry important messages which reflect situations and feelings within our waking life. Here is a quick list of the most common dreams and their interpretations. Please bear in mind, these are general meanings to the dreams, and their interpretations may differ depending on the context of the dream.
falling
being chased
Falling may be an indication of insecurity, instability and anxiety in your day-to-day life. Are you feeling overwhelmed or insecure about some aspects of your reality? These dreams may also represent a sense of failure within a certain situation.
If you dream of being chased, most times it means you’re avoiding an issue, or a person who you have unfinished business with, and your subconscious mind is trying to tell you to stop running. Who are you being chased by? Why are you being chased? How can you relate this to your waking life?
flying Flying dreams have many different meanings, but a lot of it comes down to freedom and elevation. If you are flying freely and with ease, enjoying the scenery and embracing the feeling, it may suggest you feel in charge, and secure in a situation – you are rising above something. They may also be a reflection of your personal sense of power – are you able to control your flight? Most importantly, flying dreams can symbolize freedom and spiritual expansion.
death Dreams about death usually symbolise an end of a cycle – whether this is related to a phase in your life, a job, friendship Ube-22
FEATURES losing teeth I used to have these dreams on the regular, and still do at times, and when I learned the meaning, I was mind-blown at how much I could relate! Losing your teeth in a dream often represents a feeling of powerlessness or loss of control. These may occur when you’re going through a particularly hard period in your life, which you have no control over. or a relationship, it is a strong sign of change and endings. An end usually comes with a new beginning, so don’t be afraid. The death of a loved one can also signify that there might be an issue in your relationship with this person which needs to be resolved – you are afraid of losing them from your life.
water Water is a symbol of life, death, change, rebirth and renewal. This means that dreams about water are often deeply connected to your emotions, intuition and subconscious mind. They can symbolise renewal and regeneration, but can also be a reflection of your fears – such as the fear of change, and the unknown.
exam/test Dreaming about taking an exam, or being tested in some way, may indicate an important upcoming decision or a new phase in your life – the question, or worry, is if you will pass or fail. Are you being put to a test? Maybe you’re about to become a new parent, or start a new job? These dreams can be a manifestation of low self-esteem or self-confidence.
Travelling/going on an adventure Travelling or going on a trip in our dream symbolises our life path, and the journey towards achieving our life goals. It can indicate our progress, as well as the work we put into achieving our dreams. These dreams can also be telling us we are on the right or wrong path, depending on the overall dream.
being naked Being naked in public, in your dream, can be a reflection of feelings of shame or vulnerability in your waking life. Are you hiding something that you are afraid of others finding out? Is there a fear of being exposed about something? It may also mean that you’ve been caught off guard in a certain situation.
finding/winning money Money dreams are an indication of self-confidence, selfworth and self-belief. They also forecast wealth and prosperity in the waking life. Finding money may be a sign of material gains coming your way, but can also symbolise abundance in other aspects of life – such as wisdom, love, spirituality or life pursuits.
Seeing a house A house is a home, and it represents safety and security – a shelter from the outside world. Dreaming of a house is usually symbolic of our inner-selves, and street or road the house in on is the representation of our life path – seeing a few houses in a row might symbolise different stages or periods of our life. Different rooms in the house may also represent the various aspects of our psyche. You may have this dream when seeking self-improvement or changes in your reality.
infidelity If you dream that you are having an affair, it can suggest feelings of self-guilt or self-betrayal. It can also mean that your needs, either emotional or sexual, are not being met, and you are not satisfied by your current significant other. If you dream of your partner/spouse cheating on you, it may represent insecurity or lack of trust in your relationship.
pregnancy Dreaming of pregnancy may be a symbol of growth and development in your waking life. It can be a sign of a new idea being born, or a new direction in your life. If you are currently working on a project or business, it might be a sign that you are close to reaching your goal and success. If you are pregnant, this may just be the anxiety and excitement manifesting in your subconscious.

Home is where the heart is We’ve all heard it before, and when you move abroad you realise how true it is. One way you can make your new place feel like home is for your family to settle in quickly. Don’t leave those last few boxes lying around waiting to unpack. Put out your favourite photos frames, hang some art on the walls, buy some plants; add your heart to your new home and you will soon feel relaxed and happy in your new environment. Whenever we move, I give myself two full days to unpack - and I unpack everything. I always put things in similar places, so everyone (in particular hubby who has a ‘man look’), can find what they’re looking for. For example, all medicine is kept in the bathroom; and there is always a drawer in the kitchen with useful stuff like scissors, sticky tape and bottle openers! I always focus on getting the bedrooms done first, then the girls books and games. There is nothing they love more than coming home that first day of unpacking and seeing all their favourite things again, I always make time to sit with them during this time and enjoy the sheer delight with them! Unpacking the kitchen is next, then everything else. I allocate a weekend soon after unpacking for my significant other to get his drill out and hang some art; Yes, it’s the last thing he wants to do, but I always insist he does it, or I will do it myself on Monday… needless to say he gets on with it! For some reason, he thinks I’m clumsy?! I have a few favourite photos in frames around the lounge, but we have a large photo board that is always hanging in the kitchen with pictures of family and friends. I also put out my candles and lanterns as soon as possible; hubby and I have a ritual of celebrating our move and new home with a bottle of bubbles, and I love lighting them for that celebration! Within the first week I begin to set up my ‘herb garden’. It consists of a few pots on a window sill, but when we lived in Taipei I was lucky enough to have a balcony, which I joke is my kitchen garden! I grew parsley, basil, thyme, sage, chives and rosemary. I tried radishes, rocket and spinach… but I wasn’t very successful! Ube-24
Once you’re unpacked and added your ‘heart’, start to add some ‘soul’ to your new home. Continue your family rituals - two of our family rituals are pancakes on a Sunday morning, and Friday night is pizza night! Yes, we are a family of foodies. It is very settling for the kids to have that familiarity. Be open minded about your routine. While you may have a system that works for you, you may find you need to adapt it slightly for your new location. One system that I’ve adapted, but not really changed, is our after school routine - homework, bath, playtime, dinner,
stories and bed. What is flexible though is the exact timings, in each location depending on our commute time from school we may start later, but the same bedtime is my goal. So in all the moves that we have done, this is one of my key learnings - give your heart and add your soul; you and your family will enjoy your new family home sooner. finding purpose So what exactly is your ‘purpose’? Your purpose is your motivation; the reasons you get up in the morning. Your purpose can guide the decisions you make, influence your behaviour and create meaning. For some it’s their ‘work’. For others, it is the responsibilities we have to family or friends. Some may find purpose in religion or spirituality. Your purpose is unique to you. What you identify with as your path, and it may be very different from your friends. What’s important to understand, is that your purpose can shift and change throughout life, especially with a big change such as a new expat assignment. Do you find yourself asking, so what do I do now? Then you are probably finding your purpose. How do we find purpose? By understanding our likes, dislikes, interests and passions. Once we have clarity on these, we can then start to shape it into something we can take action on. The options are endless… learning new skills, retraining, volunteering, being a mum/spouse and so on. I realised on reflection, 12 months ago I had lost myself, I wasn’t unhappy, but I wasn’t satisfied either. I have been Ube-26
almost full time occupied in each location we have lived, but I made a decision in moving to Taipei to do it differently; so I said “no” to the normal things I get sucked into, and I started searching. The result is my business, where I am fulfilling my passion of helping others. If you are looking for what’s next, start by asking yourself what are my interests and passions; where and how do I want to make an impact? Once you have your passion identified you can then start looking for ‘how’ to do something in that space. When you are ready, allocate time and invest a little in yourself. Affirmations for Success I Am More Than Enough
To affirm means to use short and simple, but extremely powerful, statements to declare your goals, and gain back your power! Affirmations can be used for trauma healing, self-love practise, anxiety and depression relief, also as confidence booster, for manifestation purposes, and to generally promote positive thinking and improve mental well-being.
To give a quick example – If you think and believe you will be wealthy, you will attract that wealth. If you are constantly worried about having financial issues, chances are, you will continue to attract more money problems into your life.
This practice might sound super basic, but the power which positive affirmations hold can influence your thought patterns, increase feelings of self-worth, and help you attract what you desire into your life, all at the same time!
The way you think, influences the way you live, and the actions you take.
Just using a few simple and meaningful statements can impact the way your conscious and subconscious mind works, and in turn, improve your whole life! I’m sure you’ve all heard about the Law of Attraction? The LOA speaks of the ability to attract and manifest anything you think of into your life.
If you are constantly worried, anxious, and do not believe you can achieve the things you dream of, you will be stuck in a place of stagnation and you will not try to change things. However; if you program your mind into positive thinking and recognise your self-worth, you will change destructive patterns in your life, become more motivated to achieve your goals, and actually get into action – if you believe you will achieve. Ube-27
Affirmations for Success
Some of the most successful people in the world, from famous actors, best selling authors and entrepreneurs, to sports personalities and athletes, have discovered the socalled “secret”, and are practising it in their day to day lives in order to keep their mind in check and focused on their end goal, whilst never losing self-belief. Dropping negative assumptions about the future, and destructive thought patterns which affect the present, may seem like an impossible task; but believe me, it’s easier than you think, if you really dedicate minimal time and energy to practising your affirmations daily. Think of your daily affirmations as a work out for the mind; you are essentially exercising your brain and getting it used to being programmed into positive thinking, rather than negative. We need to eliminate limiting beliefs and reprogram our subconscious mind to strive for success, and nothing less. It’s time to get rid of the “I won’t / I can’t / I might” and replace them with “I am / I can / I will”. We do not want to focus on what we don’t want, only what we do want. For instance, we cannot say “I don’t want to put on weight” or “I will not put on weight”. We have to transform that sentence to give it a positive connotation, as follows – “I love my body and my body loves me, it is strong, lean and healthy” or “I am healthy, I am fit, I am strong”. Ube-28
FEATURES
BELOW ARE SOME OF MY FAVOURITE AFFIRMATIONS, WHICH I PRACTICE DAILY
Trauma Healing Affirmations “I am strong and I overcome challenges” “I am capable of healing, and overcoming any obstacle in my way” “I am worthy and important, and I deserve the very best” “I am capable of transforming pain and negative experiences into strength and power” “I am opening my heart, and learning to trust again”
Self worth and belief Affirmations “I am forever transforming and growing into the best version of me” “I can and will accomplish my goals and overcome any challenges along the way” “Doors of opportunity and abundance are open to me” “I am strong, excited and powerful, and I am ready for all that this journey is about to bring” “I am powerful, fierce and unstoppable”
Self love Affirmations “I am beautiful just the way I am, externally and internally" “I love me for all that I am” “My body and my feelings are valid and important” ” I love myself unconditionally and wholeheartedly” “I have important and beautiful qualities to offer the world”
Once you feel comfortable, you can even create your own affirmations! Begin with the words “I am” or “I can” when creating your first affirmations. Use the present tense to make them more powerful, as if you have already achieved what you are affirming, and trying to manifest. Always use positive statements – state what you want, not what you don’t want. Make them short and sweet - again this will make the affirmation more powerful. Be direct and specific with what you want and use words that bring you power and confidence. Focus your affirmation on you. And most importantly - you have to believe it to achieve it! If you practice your affirmations daily and truly embrace the feeling of how great those achievements will feel, you will begin to find the power within you to take the right actions in order to achieve them! i Am better because
Then this morning, it hit me. Because we are different, I learn from you. Because we have experienced different things in our lives, we have a different perspective.
Ube-30
FEATURES
e we Are different Unfortunately I didn’t write down who said this, but it was one of the Scholarship recipients at the FIGT Conference in 2019. The statement really resonated with me at the time, and I wrote it in my notebook. I came back from the conference, and I was going to write about this statement “I am better because we are different”. But I never did it. The other day I was rifling through my files, and my notebook fell out and opened to this page. I paused for a moment, “I am better because we are different”. This statement speaks so loudly to me. But why? I headed out for my morning walk, and it was running through my head the whole way round the park “I am better because we are different”. What does this mean? Why doI keep coming back to it? Then this morning, it hit me. Because we are different, I learn from you. Because we have experienced different things in our lives, we have a different perspective. Because we have been raised in different circumstances, our approach to life and parenting is different. Because we have been raised by different families, we like different foods. It’s the complex things, but it’s also the simple things. “I am better because we are different” We are different, but at the core we are still a part of humanity. No matter our belief systems. No matter the colour of our skin. We are different, but the same in so many ways. With our differences comes diversity. With our differences comes
understanding. With our differences comes respect. However, despite all of our differences we love the same way, we hurt the same way, we feel things the same way, and in many respects our values are the same too. While I didn’t intentionally do this, as I am writing this post, I am reminded about my dear friend Kachina. We don’t talk very often, but when we do, it’s always a meaningful conversation. We haven’t seen each other for years, but it feels like we were together yesterday. When I think of my sisterhood, it’s an amazing group of women, and Kachina is at the core of it. Kachina and I are very different - our backgrounds, our upbringing. But we are so similar at the same time; our values, our hopes for our children, our vision for a better future. We have been through some tough times together, and we have celebrated amazing milestones also. “I am better because we are different” My life is richer because of the women like Kachina who are in my life. And while I apologise for singling out one person, I feel the recent clarity I had regarding this statement is about celebrating and honouring our differences. At a time when people continue to hit the streets to protest Black Lives Matter, racism is impacting all of us. No one is immune. No one is perfect. But I think when we can recognise and celebrate our differences, and how our differences make each of us better, only then we as individuals and communities can start to move forward. “I am better because we are different” Absolutely!

in need of
refreshment
When I moved to Spain, I was reassured to learn that the Spanish like to talk about the weather just as much as the British. Except, instead of comparing inches of rainfall, the focus is very much on the temperature. With a fierce heatwave sweeping across Europe, the news reports show Spain turning a deep, aggressive shade of red on the map. And that can only mean one thing – it’s August! At least this year, I sort of know what to expect; I must have acclimatised a bit, or maybe I just have a better understanding of how to survive summer in España. Last year was an adjustment. Leaving drizzly Scotland and arriving in Madrid in June, it was already scorching hot. I was missing the beach, and craving sight of any body of water since even the río had almost dried up. Public fountains tormented me. I would hover close, praying that the trusty Madrid breeze would blow the right direction so the spray would provide a quick (and subtle) cool-down. One day I lingered just a little too long, and the light spray I was expecting ended up as a heavy (and very public) drenching! I remember the first time I felt 40°C here. The temperature had hovered consistently around 38°C for weeks, but that was the day it rose just a few grados more! I had been stamping my feet through a Flamenco dance class (one of my early attempts at throwing myself into the culture) and my journey home coincided with the hottest hour of the day. Already in a sweat, I darted between shady spots until I made it on to the air-conditioned metro. Once home, I slipped off my sandals and stepped onto the cool tiles, which provided instant relief! I grabbed a glass of Ube-32
something refreshing and plunged my swollen feet into a basin of icy water. This became my effective body-cooling ritual which I would race home for after every hot day out (and by race, I mean shuffle very slowly).
FEATURES This was my new normal, and I started taking stock of my sunscreen supplies and drinking water like my life depended on it…
sunshine in February or a hot day in October is hard not to show off, but June-August can be tough - particularly this year with the compulsory use of masks.
Because life doesn’t stop here! People still go about their daily business; working, exercising, and eating out. Even home renovations are surprisingly popular in the summer months!
The heat can be draining and even now, with the AC blasting and three additional fans circulating warm air around my apartment, it is impossible to stay cool. I am currently averaging two cold showers per day and my phone has begun to crash from overheating so much like myself, it requires respite in a cool, dark room from time to time.
The public transport still runs, the roads don’t melt and even during last year’s heatwave, when other European countries allowed the public to cool off in fountains (much to my envy), Spain continued as normal, unphased by the sizzling temperatures which brought other countries to a standstill.
Siesta The only time Madrid takes a break is between the hours of around 2 and 5pm, when some of (but not all) life pauses. This is just one of the ways the Madrileños beat the heat, or at least deal with it every year. As well as the trusty siesta, other hacks include drinking cañas (because anything bigger than this tiny beer becomes warm and unappealing, very quickly), flocking to public swimming pools on weekends, and taking that all-important evening stroll at an hour that I used to call bedtime! I have been guilty of glorifying the weather here, sharing the forecast with friends and family back home. The novelty of
But I soon realised that I wouldn’t have it any other way. The fresh food, the good mood, the glowing tan and the healthy dose of Vitamin D are only some of the benefits of life in the sun. Plus, the (once-boring) topic of the weather has a whole new appeal, allowing me to practise conversing in some basic Español…

Chatter and music are carried by the warm breeze which is ever-present in this city, and I know that the incomparable vibe of a Spanish summer is the only refreshment I need!

The law of Attraction “The greatest secret of life is the Law of Attraction. The Law of Attraction can also be called the Law of Creation. In other words, life is not happening to you, you are creating it” – Rhonda Byrne In simple terms, the Law of Attraction is the ability to attract anything we focus on into our lives by using our conscious mind to materialise every thought into reality. The Law of Attraction is said to be the Law of the Universe, and teaches that all of our thoughts will eventually manifest into reality – hence a negative mindset often goes hand in hand with failure and lack of motivation. However, when the mind is positive and programmed into a frequency of gratitude and self-belief, the possibilities are limitless.
for example If you are constantly worrying about bills and money, you will repel financial abundance, making more issues arise. If you are grateful for your current situation, and know you are set for an abundant life, you will slowly begin to attract that abundance into your life and start seeing blessings manifest. The Universe is full of abundance, and there is enough for everyone to go around – whether you are trying to attract money, love or success, it’s available to you; all you have to do is act as if you already have it! The Law of Attraction states that whatever can be imagined, and held in our imagination, is achievable in our lifetime. We are a magnet for abundance, we just need to make sure we are not repelling that abundance with the wrong mindset. Ube-34
Hundreds of successful people such as Tony Robbins, Will Smith and Katy Perry have used the Law of Attraction, often called ‘The Secret’, to manifest abundance and success into their actual lives. Many of us aren’t entirely aware of the power that the Law of Attraction holds, and how much impact it has on our day-to-day life. We can attract with our conscious and subconscious minds, meaning we are often not aware that we are manifesting more problems into our lives by overthinking and stressing about our current situation. We can attract as many problems, as we can attract abundance – this is why it is so important to incorporate the practice of affirming, as well as gratitude, into our present lives. When we think positively and appreciate all the good in our life, instead of focusing on the bad, we will, in turn, start to see more positive things being attracted into our lives. By having the right mindset and believing in ourselves, we will strive for better, put in more effort, and eventually reach our goals. Your mind is so powerful – learn to use it to your advantage.

exhale, embrace, engag Hi, my name is Talu and I’m a certified Happiness Coach currently living in Hamburg, Germany. I’m so excited to connect with you all on the United British Expats Magazine. It has been 20 years since I left Britain in search for a destination or destinations :-) knowing now that it isn’t about the destination and all about the journey and what a ride this journey has been. I feel so grateful for the experiences and excited to share with you all here. Born and raised in London, after graduating with my MSc in Air Transport Management, I was so determined to travel and get to know our planet. I began my career working for International Air Transport Association (IATA) in London, my position allowed me to get a taste for traveling to Asia, North America, Africa and Central America. I absolutely loved witnessing all the different places, smells & sounds. A few years later I moved to the Geneva IATA office and before I knew it, I was off to Switzerland for my new life overseas. This was my first experience living abroad, Geneva is such an amazing pretty place and it was so easy to connect with many other nationals it felt like another melting pot. I met my partner along this journey and we shared the same passion to work and live in other countries. He is from Germany yet grew up in Japan as his parents were expats in Tokyo for many years. We have since lived in 4 other countries Indonesia, US, China and now Germany the second time around. During these adventures as the trailing expat spouse I also worked in Consulting, Marketing, teaching English and as an Expatriate Consultant. All of my positions have in different ways given me the chance to live my value and passion to connect and coach people. Living abroad is one of the most enriching and exciting adventures one can have. Giving one the opportunity to have new experiences, explore new cultures and languages. However, living overseas is not always easy, settling into an unfamiliar environment away from people you love, having to make new friends, and starting everything over – can leave one easily out of balance. When I reflect back the last 20 years overseas has given me way more resilience to face change in whatever shape or size now. It’s true what they say, CHANGE is the only constant thing! Like starting a marriage in a new country, moving continents while pregnant and having a family with no family around…all of which seemed challenging at the time as we couldn't speak Ube-36
the languages and felt isolated, yet the positives so out way the negatives and I wouldn't change it for the world. Being creatures of habit and naturally what feels familiar is no doubt safe and comfortable, so when we step out of the norm, there are bound to be differences. The moment we allow ourselves to acknowledge change, comes acceptance of not knowing and we switch on a mindset that is embracing. When we think about it moving abroad isn't the only change in our lives right, it can come in all forms, a new job, new relationship, new school, new house, transition in our mental or physical health and so on…. With all the high and lows of living abroad the big shift for me has been learning how to truly be in the present moment. Not having concrete long terms plans, initially this was challenging as I wanted to plan and book flights etc., after having kids it felt like their school vacation was the time to schedule things in….

ge… An expat journey! Essentially living in the now means, focusing completely on the current task at hand, by not worrying about the future or thinking about the past. Our lives consist of a series of present moments, they are forever unfolding before our eyes! When your mind does wonder you can easily create a healthy balance, for example thinking about the past in small doses, and by focusing on the past for a reason (e.g., to relive a pleasant experience, identify & appreciate what did work).
HERE ARE SOME PRACTICES I SHARE WITH MY CLIENTS TO BE MORE PRESENT: •
•
•
Set daily intentions, when we set long term goals we often miss the opportunity of what is happening right now, as our thoughts drift to the future Switch it! Another fun mindful activity I share with my clients is to switch it for e.g. when eating/writing do it with your opposite hand, this surely will bring your focus to the task at hand :-) Take a walk in nature, notice at least 5 things around you, i.e. the birds, the flowers, sounds, colours, texture! Bringing your awareness to focus on the joy & flow in this moment.
HERE ARE MY 3 SIMPLE STEPS FOR ANY MOVE! 1.
Take a deep breath & EXHALE the anxiety, fear of change and doubts. Turn that mindset to being open, adventurous & full of excitement. One thing we have learnt as a family, goodbyes are never goodbyes, it is more like see you soon, in German they say ‘auf wiedersehen’ which literally means, to seeing you again! We live in a time where connecting & maintaining relationships has never been the same.
2.
EMBRACE this opportunity to explore. With change we create that experience of something different and the chance to grow, learn new cultures and languages. What a gift! With our moves I always remind our kids ‘Home is when we’re together’ for our family it’s not about a place, it’s about the feeling, when we’re together, wherever we are globally!
3.
Once you arrive ENGAGE: establish your support network, with kids its easy once they make friends you’re drawn to those families. There are support groups for different nationalities & International groups that have regular
meetings, breakfast or lunches, I’m still in contact with people I met at these events 20 years later. Learn the local language even if it’s just the basics, that’s all it takes to cross that cultural bridge find your resources, like where to buy Nutella & local useful appsresist comparing & be open to embrace the differences, lead by learning. Finally, celebrate every day and aim to make it count! Of course, you will not enjoy every day of your life, having the tools to reset when things are challenging is what matters and making the choice to have as many good days. Collect all the beautiful moments and create a scrapbook/photo album or journal for yourself. You can always browse the pages when you feel low and remind yourself of the nice memories.
REMEMBER THE GRASS IS GREENER WHERE YOU WATER IT! Wherever in the world you are, remember our planet truly is an incredibly beautiful and magical place to live. When I feel low on energy or simply homesick the first thing I do is get outside and spend time with nature. By the water, at a lake, or canal, watching the sunset, sitting beneath the moon, or just getting lost in the stars. Knowing that if I was somewhere else I would still look out to our planet and feel the same vibes. It really puts things into perspective and helps me remember I am part of something so much bigger. Our Earth is here for us, and I’ve developed a deep connection to our beautiful planet, which helps guide me through the challenging changes in my life. I truly feel like a citizen of our globe. We are all moving into a new normal and by doing this with sound choices can contribute to our well being and happiness for the long term. My coaching vision is to facilitate my clients through reflection & awareness to lead happier lives, wherever they are globally. I believe when we are aligned with purpose all aspects of our lives flow organically. A mother of two children, a global citizen and baggage of experience in change and cultures, in a multi-cultural marriage raising multilingual children we focus on embracing each new day with gratitude and adventure.
