DEPHECT

ABOUT US As well as being a clothing brand, Dephect is a way of life for a group of friends from London with a healthy appetite for creativity. It is also a means for showing the appreciation we have for the culture that has inspired us over the past decade, and for linking up with people whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re into the same things as us. Growing up as skateboarders in the early 90â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s led to participation in other alternative UK scenes, such as snowboarding, BMX and graffiti. With roots that stem from being immersed in hip-hop from a young age, we were always aware of the influence we drew from art and music. This proceeded to open up the world of art and graphic design as a whole, and a love for all kinds of music. The simple fact is we do this because we love it, and we are lucky enough to be able to do it for a living. We try to work with our friends on most aspects of what we do, from graphic design to garment design and photography to beat making. Most of the people you will see on our Hook Ups team are not only good at what they do, but they are also our friends. Working with friends provides a good source of inspiration and a mutual understanding of what Dephect is. Trying to maintain a high level of consistency in what we create, always pursuing originality with persistence and passion. Dephect is solely owned and run by the people who founded it back in 1998; it has grown from an idea in our bedrooms to a creative outlet for a constantly growing army of friends and allies. A decade down the line and our focus is as clear as ever; to continue developing as a brand, but without loosing site of our roots.

HOW WOULD DESCRIBE WHAT YOU DO? I wouldn’t call myself a straight illustrator, and I hate the name Urban Artist and I have never titled myself as a graffiti artist or a painter or a designer, I would say I’m more of a character developer and animation Director, as I am pretty involved in the animation industry as well as the illustration world. Having said that I will be doing a live paint show at glasto this summer so look out for me

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN INFULANCES ? My influences come from so many places, when I was younger it was skate graphics and graff but as you get older you absorb and appreciate so many different areas of design, from packaging, wallpaper patterns, typography, characters, design from 1950’s - 80’s, and Japanese toys. People that have influenced me, Tim Burton, Pete Fowler, Jamie Hewlett, Lou Romano, Tim Biskupp, Johnny Hardstaff, Espo, Reese, Boleta, Zezao, Genevieve Gaukler, Mizzo, the list goes on... WHAT’S THIS GRAPHIC ALL ABOUT THEN? (AS IN THE ONE YOU DID FOR US) I wanted to create T shirt graphic that was quite organic looking, that flowed across the T nicely, I kept it quite loose and abstract so it didn’t look too symmetrical and rigid like a lot of T designs do. Theme wise i was just thinking about all the music festivals I’m going to this year and it inspired me to turn out this design, it’s a good one to rock out for the summer!
