Showcasing Selby District The Tour de Yorkshire was a great chance for us to show off the wonderful Selby district… and didn’t we do well… Thousands of people turned out to line the race route, with big community events held across the district in places such as Sherburn, Monk Fryston, Riccall and Tadcaster. The district hosted two days of the three day race, which attracted around two million spectators in total and was broadcast across the world. Selby District Council continues to work with race organisers, Welcome to Yorkshire, to help promote the area through events such as this.

Schoolgirl’s artwork celebrated at new adventure attraction An aspiring young artist has seen her work brought to life on the wall of the new skate park at Summit Indoor Adventure. Lucy Thorn, a year eight pupil at Brayton High School, came out on top in a competition run by Inspiring healthy lifestyles, which manages the recently-opened facility on behalf of Selby District Council. Her winning design has been reproduced on the wall of the skate park with a little help from professional artist Chris Dorning, otherwise known as The Cunning Craftsman. Headteacher at Brayton High School Allison Redshaw, told Locate: “Students at Brayton High School are highly creative and I am thrilled that Lucy’s talent has been recognised in this way.” Summit Indoor Adventure offers a variety of activities including an aerial trek, adventure climbing, ten pin

bowling and adventure play, as well as indoor skiing and snowboarding and an indoor skate park. A café and restaurant are also on site. Managing Director of Inspiring healthy lifestyles, Pete Burt, told us: “Chris has done a great job in replicating Lucy’s winning design, which really injects some personality in to the skate park.” Meanwhile, visitors to the new facility are being encouraged to park at two town centre car parks – South Parade and Back Micklegate. They can also park at the existing Scott Road site, where there are 118 spaces which are shared with the Leisure Village. An additional 62 car parking spaces will be available at Scott Road once the building work is completed later this year.

Work progresses on Tadcaster Bridge Work remains on schedule to complete the reconstruction of Tadcaster Bridge before the end of this year. The bridge partially collapsed due to the force of flood water following heavy rains over the Christmas period. Action carried out during May included: • Contractors investigating the water supply under the river to ensure that when work begins there is no damage to services. • Utility services within the bridge are now prepared for the reconstruction. • Tadcaster’s historical society has taken one of the original pilings removed for dating. • Discussions with the Environment Agency and Historic England about the planned works. • Trial digs on the surface, sourcing of the stone, and completion of the bridge designs.
Our kitchen
The County Council is offering Tadcaster residents several ways to keep up to date with progress: • An on-going story board has been erected at the repair site showing the work carried out to date. As work progresses, panels will be added regularly. • The Inkshop in Bridge Street has kindly agreed to display in its window a television showing regular updates on the work to date. • A highways officer works from an office on the site on the east side of the river on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 1pm and 3pm each week to be available to answer questions about the reconstruction from members of the public.

Housing for the future
PLAN Selby - a long-term plan that sets out housing and business growth – is a way in which the District Council will support its big ambitions to make the area a great place to do business and a great place to enjoy life. The overall plan was adopted by the Council in October 2013, and the next stage is to identify specific sites for development. Later in the year you’ll have a chance to take part in a consultation on these. The District Council will be publicising details through local press, via its website and social media channels: @Selbydc on Twitter or just search for ‘Selby District Council’ on Facebook. PLAN Selby sets out housing and business growth priorities between now and 2027. It is a vital
part of the Council’s work to support growth and investment, by giving certainty to encourage appropriate business development. It also helps the Council to plan effectively for the new homes needed to support our growing population. PLAN Selby will be used as a framework for considering planning applications in future, to test their suitability to deliver on the growth we need based on the business and housing requirements of our area.

Celebrating local world record holders Back on 20 December 2015 the four-woman Yorkshire Rows team – which included two people from the Selby district - set off on a mammoth challenge to row over 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean. The team completed the challenge, arriving in Antigua 67 days later, and became world record holders as the oldest all-female crew to cross the Atlantic. At a special Selby District Council meeting in April, the rowers became the first ever people to receive the Freedom of the Selby District, a special award granted to celebrate their fantastic efforts. At the ceremony the awards were presented to the rowers by former Selby District Council Chairman, Cllr Richard Sweeting. The team’s skipper, Janette Benaddi, is from Burn. She explained, “We’ve been taken aback by the welcome home we’ve received from across Yorkshire, and as a resident of the Selby district it’s a real privilege to have received this special award from the Council. We’re immensely proud of what we managed to do and delighted that it’s really caught people’s imagination.” Alongside the award, the Council has granted the team
10
an annual free membership of Selby Leisure Centre, which opened last year. The state-of-the-art fitness facilities include two swimming pools, a health and fitness centre with a 100-station gym, a class and exercise studio, synthetic sports pitch and sauna and steam room facilities. District Council Chief Executive, Mary Weastell, added, “The four rowers are a real inspiration, having completed the gruelling Talisker Whisky Altantic Challenge in 67 days to become world record holders. It was an honour for the Council to be able to recognise this amazing achievement. The team has also raised significant funds for charity too. It’s an incredible feat and well worthy of being the first ever recipients of this special award”. To celebrate this special occasion the Council commissioned a video of the evening, consisting of footage from the ceremony and interviews from the rowers as well as key figures from the district. You can see this online, via the Council’s website: www. selby.gov.uk. If you wish to find out more about the district’s local heroes please visit www.yorkshirerows.com.

As next stage of repairs get underway The next phase of carriageway reconstruction on the A63 Selby bypass is scheduled to begin towards the end of June.
first phase was completed on schedule and within budget, and was wellreceived by locals. We are now ready to begin the second phase of the work.”
The work, which is expected to take approximately 12 weeks, will cover the stretch between the A1041 and the A19 Doncaster Road.
The work involves deep repair and reinstatement of the carriageway, which requires a full closure of the bypass along the stretch under reconstruction. Advanced notice signs will be put in place advising motorists of the area of closure, and a diversion route around the works will be clearly signed and suitable for all types of traffic. Every effort will be made to discourage traffic from using unsuitable routes.
This work is the second phase of a three-phase project. Phase one, from the A1041 Bawtry Road to the A19 at Barlby, was completed in July last year. The third phase will cover the section from the A19 Doncaster Road to A1238 Leeds Road. “We want the people of Selby to have a bypass that is fit for purpose in the interest of the town’s economic future,” said County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways. “The

MAKE YOUR FIREPLACE FANTASTIC
Tastes and fashions may change, but one thing that doesn’t is the enduring popularity of the fireplace as a focal point in the home. From open gas and electric fires to the increasingly popular stove, Focus Fireplaces & Stoves has been the area’s expert fire and fireplace provider for nearly 30 years, with dozens of displays at its showroom in York. Owner Julian Somers told Locate: “Everyone loves a roaring fire, it is one thing that doesn’t change regardless of current trends and fashions. Stoves have become really popular in recent years, but we cater for all tastes and budgets and our experienced fitting and sales staff guide customers through the maze of

technical questions that fires and fireplaces often bring to light. You may be considering a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove. These are clean burning and highly efficient. Or perhaps you’d prefer the convenience of a gas or electric model. Whatever your personal taste, we can guide you through the options and provide qualified installation to give total peace of mind.” The Focus showroom at Monks Cross has over 90 displays covering all styles of fireplaces and stoves. York charity recognised with top national award
York Community Furniture Store has been acknowledged for its outstanding work following the December floods, which saw many families forced to leave their homes, with their furniture and possessions ruined by contaminated water. The charity, which has branches in York, Selby and Scarborough, was named Reuse Organisation of the Year in the Furniture Reuse Network’s 2016 annual awards. It was nominated following its work coordinating furniture for those displaced or rehomed in York, as well as managing furniture being donated to those affected from every part of the country. Manager of the York Community Furniture Store, Ruth Batty, told Locate: “When news of the floods began to break, we knew we were in the perfect position to offer assistance, but we had no idea of the scale of what would be needed – hundreds of people effectively rendered homeless within a 24 hour period.” It is estimated that the workload of the staff and volunteers involved in the Community Furniture Store quadrupled at the height of the crisis. Ruth added: “I am so proud of our team – this award recognises the incredibly hard work they put in, and I know that I speak for many of the local residents that we helped when I say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone involved.”

Student takes on ancient city trek for charity Exam results won’t be the only thing on Selby student Amy Howe’s mind this August. The 18-year-old from Thorpe Willoughby, who is studying for her A-Levels at Selby College, will head out to Peru in South America this summer, where she will trek to the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, high in the Andes mountains. Amy is taking on the challenge to raise money for the MS Society, a cause that is close to her heart as her aunt recently passed away from the neurological condition. Another member of Amy’s family also has MS. Speaking of her once-in-a-lifetime adventure, Amy told Locate: “This is a part of the world I’ve always wanted to visit, and I decided this year was the perfect time to do it as I’m not tied to full-time work or university.”
Every day in the UK, 14 people are diagnosed with MS. It’s a life-long, chronic condition for which there is currently no cure.
She added: “Multiple sclerosis desperately needs more research and awareness as it often takes a long time to diagnose and offer treatments.”
Amy and her friends have set themselves a fundraising target of £500, and donations can be made via her Just Giving page - www.justgiving.com/Amy-Howe2

This month business and marketing expert Ann Brown offers her top tips for identifying your ideal customers
Pinpointing your new ‘potentials’ For many growing businesses sales can be haphazard and typically come in peaks and troughs. Marketing activity tends to be concentrated as new ventures start up and then becomes sporadic. Identifying your ideal customer makes marketing and advertising easier, more effective and helps to smooth out the peaks and troughs in sales. Existing customers are the most productive and most profitable area you can sell to, so this is the group to look at first. Keep in touch with them regularly with news of new products and services, advice and offers. However all businesses need new customers at some point. With some
planning you can make finding new customers easier and more cost effective. Ideal customers • Pay on time • Make decisions to buy from you in a short space of time • Recommend you to other people • Respond to your communications • Buy from you again and again When planning and identifying your ideal customers find a group of customers, by type, that you want to target and then break down the categories you have selected further. Are you targeting?

Repointing
Separating out groups of potential customers allows you to target each group separately, by how and where they buy, by the publications they read and the types of ads and offers they respond to.
Full or part houses, chimney stacks, ridge tiles, guttering
When you are looking at who to target first think carefully why they will want to buy your products and services. How will they use it and what will it do for them? How likely are they to recommend your business? Answer these questions as best as you can and use the answers in your marketing material, on your web site, on social networks and in the ads you place.

When did you found Dream Doors? “The York franchise of Dream Doors was founded in 2009 and I took over the franchise in 2014. I was joined by my son James, and hope to one day welcome my grandchildren to the firm - turing it into a threegeneration family business.” Tell us a bit about the nature of Dream Doors? “An established and trusted national brand, Dream Doors offers a vast range of made to measure replacement kitchen and bedroom doors, many exclusive. We offer kitchen makeovers for a fraction of the cost of a new re-fit and swapping the doors and drawer fronts can dramatically change the look and style of your kitchen. What does the future hold for Dream Doors? “To continue providing bespoke quality kitchens at an affordable cost, whilst remaining an approachable, friendly family run business. “As we are now established we also feel the time is right to start giving back to the community. Therefore we are holding our first fundraising event - ‘The Blooming Great Tea Party’, taking place on Saturday, June 25, 10.30am – 2.30pm in aid of Marie Curie. Please pop along and see our newly refurbished showroom and join us for tea and brownies everyone is welcome!” Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? “Locate gets us to those customers in a wide area who are looking to refresh their kitchens.”

Carnival fever DATE: 11th September 2016 ENTRY: £3 per adult VENUE: Magnets Sports MORE INFO: Tadcaster and Social Club, Tadcaster Carnival Facebook page
Tadcaster has had a rough start to 2016 so this year’s Carnival is the perfect opportunity to enjoy an afternoon and evening of uplifting entertainment, alongside acknowledgements of all those who have done so much in the town. To kick start the day, ’S Club 7’ will officially open the event and play a 45 minute set to get everyone in a party mood. There will then follow an afternoon of arena performances as well as live bands, with Minster FM compering. There will be lots of new and exciting catering stands this year, alongside the usual fair and children’s games. York’s number one party band ‘Huge’ will lead the night into a spectacular fireworks display, put on by the Fireworkers. Due to restrictions with the bridge closure there will be no parade this year, but the parade will be back - bigger and better than ever - next year. The £3 entry fee will provide admission for both day and evening, any funds left over after the event will go to local charities and groups in Tadcaster. Buses will be available for those that need a little extra help from East to West.

Twickenham triumph A rising star in the rugby world has flown the flag for our region as he not only represented Yorkshire in the National Under 20s Championship Final at Twickenham, but also helped them bring home the Cup. Student James Wright (19), of Selby has played rugby for the past eight years, starting out at Middlesbrough RUFC, moving on to Selby RUFC before joining his current club Doncaster Phoenix. Playing the positions of fullback and wing James has played for both Yorkshire U20’s and North England U20’s. In 2015 James was asked to captain the England (College) Lionhearts squad in a game against Scotland’s Bravehearts. Winning that game, which James (pictured centre) described as ‘a great experience’, secured a trip to the Czech Republic to defeat their U20’s squad. A former Selby High student, James has just completed his sports coaching at Bishop Burton College and is going on to finish his degree at Doncaster.
Speaking of his incredible day at Twickenham where they managed to beat rivals Northumberland with a 53 - 20 score, James said: ‘Representing Yorkshire U20’s in the County Cup Final was the longest build up to a game, ever! The morning before kick off felt like a whole day, but as the game started it was gone in a flash. “It was so good to score and also win the game! It’s always been a childhood dream to play at Twickenham and even scoring there will be an experience I’ll simply never forget.” The try James scored on the day, which helped secure the trophy, has been nominated for England’s ‘Try of the Month’. Looking to the future James is now playing full time at Doncaster Phoenix and under the direction of coach Antony Posà is aiming straight for the top.
