FROM A POLICE

Meet Lucas: One of Scunthorpe’s new PCSOs

“I’ve noticed that the more visible we are in the community, the more approachable we become. The aim is to help people feel comfortable speaking with us, knowing they can reach out for support whenever they need it.”

POLICE PERSPECTIVE:

As part of our continued commitment to improving local policing and building stronger communities, this month, Scunthorpe policing team is excited to introduce Lucas, one of its newest Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) at our Scunthorpe North Police Station

After successfully completing an intensive eight-week training programme, Lucas is now out in the community, working alongside our Neighbourhood Policing Team to engage with residents and help tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

PCSOs like Lucas play a crucial role in providing a visible and approachable presence in the community, aiming for the public to feel safer and supported. We spoke to him about his journey into policing, the rewarding moments so far, and his goals for the future.

What motivated you to become a Police Community Support Officer, and how has your journey been so far in this role?

“I’m originally from Leeds, where I grew up in areas like Gipton and Harehills, which were often affected by crime and drug-related issues. As I got older, I noticed a significant improvement in the area thanks to increased police presence, which made the community feel safer.

‘’After moving to Scunthorpe, I saw the PCSO role advertised and decided to apply. Since starting my training, every day has been an opportunity to grow.

One of the standout moments for me was being part of the team that helped dismantle a cannabis grow, which really felt like making a tangible difference.

In your early days as a PCSO, what has been one of the most rewarding experiences or moments you’ve had on the job?

“One of the most rewarding moments for me so far was helping an elderly woman who had fallen victim to fraud.

She was feeling isolated and vulnerable. We provided support, gave her advice on how to protect herself, and encouraged her to join an all-women’s club meeting.

The group gave her a safe space to connect with others and share her experiences without judgment. When we spoke to her afterward, it was clear that she felt a great sense of relief and happiness. It was a reminder of how important this role is.

How have you been engaging with the community so far, and what kind of impact have you seen?

“Through welfare checks, providing crime prevention advice, and supporting victims of crime. I’ve also attended local meetings to ensure that we’re all working together to increase the positive impact. I’ve noticed that the more visible we are in the community, the more approachable we become. The aim is to help people feel comfortable speaking with us, knowing they can reach out for support whenever they need it.

Looking ahead, what are your main priorities or goals in your role within the local policing team?

“I’m focused on continuing to support the local community and build on the relationships I’ve started developing. My longer-term goal is to challenge myself further by applying for a Police Constable role, but for now, I’m committed to doing my best as a PCSO and contributing to making Scunthorpe a safer place.

‘’For anyone considering a role in policing, I’d say go for it. This job has taught me things about myself I never would have learned otherwise. If you’re ever thinking, ‘What if?’- I encourage you to take the leap.”

#YesYouCanWithSlimmingWorld

Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club is bringing The Canterbury Tales to life at the Plowright Theatre

The play is on from the 14th-17th May and is a lively Modern English adaptation by Martin Riley. But if that’s made you groan and switch off, this show could not be further from memories of English at school

It’s a rowdy, hilarious, fast-moving romp through what was the most popular book of its time. Think street theatre meets panto combined with a dose of Horrible Histories, audience participation and bare bottoms being kissed, “full savourly” to quote Chaucer himself. Four immortal medieval alchemists open the show, talking to the audience and encouraging them to be part of the performance. On the 25th of October 1400, they tell us, they discovered the Elixir of Life. After having drunk some themselves, they save a little for Chaucer, but it’s not enough. He’s not quite dead, but he isn’t quite alive either.

In an attempt to bring him back to life, they invite five of Chaucer’s pilgrims to tell their Canterbury Tales. They are helped by a band of Travelling Players who recreate the feisty women, conceited chickens, sighing lovers, medieval hooligans, crafty students and sexist knights.

The universal human themes in the pilgrims’ stories are still relevant today. Certainly the moral of the Nun’s Priest: “Remember to be on your guard against flatterers and all those who open their mouths when they should keep them shut,” is good advice to us all.

Produced with the generous support of The Chaucer Heritage Trust.
