Hello and welcome to your April edition of Our Goole.
The clocks have gone forward, the nights are getting lighter, and the days should start to get warmer.
This month, we showcase Schoolreaders who are on the search for volunteers to listen to children read one-to-one, giving children valuable time with an adult who is not a teacher or parent, and inspiring them to find a love of reading.
We also showcase East Riding Fostering - with more foster carers needed to help care for children and young people in the East Riding they’d love
for you to become part of East Riding fostering.
And, last month, it was every parent’s favourite day… World Book Day. We showcase the top costumes from our readers who sent in a picture of their child via our Facebook page.
As always, our friendly team is just an email or phone call away to help you with all your advertisement needs and answer any questions you may have.
We will see you again in May, but for now sit back with a cuppa and enjoy your latest instalment of Our Goole.

Schoolreaders are on the search for volunteers to listen to children read one-to-one, giving children valuable time with an adult who is not a teacher or parent, and inspiring them to find a love of reading
Schoolreaders was founded in 2013 by Jane Whitbread. The charity was established with the mission of improving children’s literacy by offering one-to-one reading support to primary school pupils who needed extra help, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Since its launch in 2013, Schoolreaders has grown rapidly and now operates in every county in England. Schoolreaders volunteers currently support over 30,000 children per week in over 1,500 primary schools.
What do Schoolreaders offer as a charity?
Schoolreaders matches volunteers to local primary schools - focusing on schools with the greatest need - giving one-to-one reading sessions.
How can volunteering help the local community?
By contributing time to help local children, volunteering with Schoolreaders can create stronger community bonds and volunteers often become role models for the children they assist. In
addition to offering much needed reading support for children within schools, volunteering can help to combat isolation and loneliness amongst the local community and our volunteers tell us their visits to schools are often the highlight of their week.
What are the benefits of volunteering with Schoolreaders?
Just 10 minutes a week with one of our volunteers has been shown to improve children’s reading fluency, comprehension and enjoyment. It also gives them valuable time with an adult who is not a teacher or parent which aids their social skills.
Reading with one of our volunteers can help children build confidence in their reading abilities, which can lead to better academic performance and greater opportunities in the future.
How can people volunteer?
The commitment is just one hour a week during term time for a year. Volunteers can find out more and apply via the website at www.schoolreaders.org

This month, Goole Policing Team talks to us about the importance of staying safe online and gives its top tips on all we can do to prevent fraud
“In 2024, more than 35,000 reports were made to Action Fraud regarding these types of hacks, marking an increase of over 12,000 compared to 2023.”
We live in a world where digital platforms have become a part of our everyday lives.
Whether it’s shopping, banking, staying connected with friends and family, or managing appointments, the internet is central to almost everything we do. While this digital age offers many benefits, it also opens the door for criminals to exploit vulnerabilities for financial gain. Just as there are dangers in the physical world, the online space is not immune to risks.
Detective Inspector Mark Hawley, from the Economic Crime Unit, offers valuable insights on how to protect your personal information and improve your online safety. With more than 24 years of experience of investigating crime including tackling online fraud and cybercrime cases, Mark shares essential steps that everyone can take to reduce the risk of falling victim to these growing digital threats.
In our conversation with Detective Inspector Hawley, he provided advice on how to improve your safety online and navigate the digital world more securely: “National data has shown a significant rise in online fraud reports over the past few years, particularly concerning social media and email account hacks. In 2024, more than 35,000 reports were made to Action Fraud regarding these types of hacks, marking an increase of over 12,000 compared to 2023. The financial cost reached nearly £1 million. These crimes not only have financial consequences but can also undermine a person’s sense of security and trust in the digital world, highlighting the importance of taking preventative measures to reduce the risk of falling victim to such crimes.
‘’The first step to improving online safety is to create strong, unique passwords. I always recommend using three random words for your password. It’s easy to remember, but much harder for criminals to guess. Adding a mix of numbers, symbols, and capital letters can further secure your account.
“I would always recommend enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA) which is a great way to keep your accounts safe. Even if someone identifies your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the additional verification.
“Adjusting your privacy settings on social media platforms and other websites allows you to control who sees your information. This can help protect you from criminals who might try to target you based on your personal details.”
Mark’s advice to improve your safety online:
• Create strong passwords – use a mix of capital letters, numbers, and symbols.
• Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) – this adds an extra layer of protection to your accounts.
• Never share one time passcodes (OTP).
• Review privacy settings regularly..
• Use a backup email or phone number.
• Update software and devices – keeping your software up-to-date is the easiest way to stay secure
• Don’t click on suspicious links.
• Be wary of sharing personal details – many recovery questions use personal information.
More foster carers are needed to help care for children and young people in the East Riding. Sometimes children are unable to live with their own family. This may be due to a crisis in the family, ill health, relationship difficulty or bereavement.
It could also be because the child needs to be protected. This is where foster carers come in, providing a safe, secure, and loving home. The duration children stay may vary, from day care or overnight stays to regular planned weekends or holiday stays, to weeks, months or years.
People who foster for East Riding of Yorkshire Council receive comprehensive support including their own dedicated social worker to provide practical and emotional support, training and regular free social events including Christmas parties, theme park visits and summer events. There are also local support groups available for foster carers to attend and help for existing children in the family to adapt to fostering. Assessment to become a foster carer takes around four months.
Would fostering work for me and my family financially?
If you are considering becoming a foster carer, you will want to consider how it will work for you financially. The financial offer for foster families will be amongst the highest in the Yorkshire and Humber region. In addition to financial allowances,
families also receive contributions towards equipment, additional money on the child’s birthday and at Christmas. All members of the household also receive free membership to East Riding leisure centres.
Wendy and Liam Duthie have been foster carers for East Riding Fostering for five years. They have two biological children of their own, Dawson and Delilah. Wendy told Our Goole: “When our children turned two and four, it felt the right time to be able to become foster carers. We had a spare bedroom and lots of love to give. Over the last four years we have fostered nine babies and it has brought a lot of joy to our family. When I began telling people we were going to foster, a lot of people asked how our children would cope.
“Our children have found it a really positive
experience, and they help with breakfast and teach the children phonics. Every child’s circumstance has been different, and we are so pleased to have been able to give each child the care and love they needed at that time in their lives.”
