It’s that time again - the Goole and Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards are just around the corner and the shortlisted finalists for each award have been announced
The Goole and Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards is organised by a small committee of volunteers from the local business community.
As in previous years, the panel of independent judges also decided which of the entrants should receive the Overall Business of the Year Award, sponsored by Siemens. Meanwhile, the organising committee has
nominated someone to receive the Tim Richardson Lifetime Achievement Award.
Garrey Haase, Chair of the organising committee, which is made up of volunteers from the local business community, said:
“This year we had more categories for businesses to enter than ever before and our new categoriesFamily Business of the Year and Long-Standing Business of the
Year - proved particularly popular.
“We were delighted to receive a record number of entries, with a good spread across all of the categories from businesses and organisations from a broad range of different sectors. It was particularly pleasing to see so many new businesses entering the awards for the first time this year.”
He added: “We’re very grateful

This month, Goole’s policing team gives us further insight into the team who feature on ‘Suspect No1’. The TV series showcases the challenging work our detectives in our Major Crime Team face every day to solve crimes occurring across our region to seek justice for victims
“You may be surprised to hear that when somebody is tragically killed and our Major Crime Team gets to work, they have a mixture of over 40 detectives and staff with a variety of skills that all contribute to ensuring dangerous offenders are brought to justice.”
You may be surprised to hear that when somebody is tragically killed and our Major Crime Team gets to work, they have a mixture of over 40 detectives and staff with a variety of skills that all contribute to ensuring dangerous offenders are brought to justice.
Now that the application window is open to become one of Humberside Police’s next detectives, Detective Sergeants who have worked in our Major Crime department for almost six years talk to us about how the team solves crime and what it’s really like being a detective.
Can you talk us through what types of investigations you and your team work on within the Major Crime Team?
“I think for a lot of people, when they hear Major Crime they think ‘murders’ and while they’re right, we do work around the clock to catch a killer. We also investigate manslaughter, kidnap, child deaths, gross negligence and long running investigations known by a lot of people as ‘cold cases’.”
People might be surprised to hear you investigate cases of gross negligence, how do those investigation work?
“These can be quite lengthy and complex investigations involving some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
“Our job is to understand why and how they have come to receive a poor level of care. Sadly, that poor level of care often involves one or multiple people being mistreated. It might be that they’ve been neglected, or their care plan hasn’t been followed.”
You mentioned that as a team, you have a particular set of skills, how does that help you solve a murder?
“With any murder investigation, a Senior Investigating Officer is always appointed to ensure no stone is left unturned when it comes to gathering evidence.
“Usually, an initial briefing will be held to help everyone understand the circumstances around the initial report to police.
“The first 48 hours are crucial as we start to understand the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death, and the only way that can happen is through a huge team effort.”
Understandably, when anybody is murdered this causes concern among residents, does it happen a lot in our area?
“It is always awful when we are called to attend a briefing after a family tragically loses a loved one, however, the majority of our investigations involve people who are known to each other, and I’m pleased to say they don’t happen on a weekly basis.”
What happens when you’ve caught the killer and they’re charged?
“I think it has always been a bit of a myth that once we charge somebody our job is done until the suspect is sent to Crown Court to either plead or stand trial, but that isn’t actually the case, that’s when most of the hard work starts for us.
“Once we charge somebody, that is when we start to build on the evidence already gathered alongside our Disclosure Officers for the Crown Prosecution Service.”
Victoria Wood, from Goole, began her Slimming World journey in 2024. Since then, she has achieved an incredible transformation, shedding over six stone and earning the prestigious title of ‘Greatest Loser 2025’.
Slimming World’s Greatest Loser competition celebrates the member in each local Slimming World group who has lost the most weight, highlighting their dedication and commitment and the inspiring changes they’ve made.
Victoria told Our Goole: “Around Christmas 2023 I had been trying to lose weight for some time, I wasn’t really getting anywhere so decided to join Slimming World. A friend was doing really well and encouraged me to join.
“I wanted to feel better about myself, be healthier and not
feel so tired all the time. I have health issues and I was certain were being made worse because of the weight. My confidence was really low and I found myself avoiding events.
“I found the plan really easy to follow, I could adapt it to my dietary needs and for the whole family. One of my favourite things is you don’t feel like you are denying yourself, it is a healthy and sustainable eatiing plan.
“So far I’ve lost six stone and seen lot of health benefits. I enjoy activities I didn’t before, can walk my dogs more easily and have much more energy. My confidence has improved
and I enjoy wearing different clothes or rediscovering some I thought I’d never wear again.
“The group I go to is amazing, Lou really supports everyone and is so welcoming.”
Louise, Slimming World consultant told Our Goole: “Every member is a winner, however, competitions help inspire members and others. This competition helps the Greatest Loser shine, as it’s not voted for, it is the member who has lost the most amount of weight.”

This month, local property expert Phil Jones from Link Agency talks to us about artificial intelligence and how powerful it can be for estate agents
Tech is increasingly important in the world of estate agents. Having the right technology allows agents to be more efficient in their work.
Artificial intelligence and applications when combined are very powerful tools.
At Link Agency we are constantly looking at new ways to improve our operating efficiency. While AI is useful, it needs to be
managed and checked. It is very often easier to check and correct work of others rather than do something from scratch, which is the same with AI.
AI will only generate good outcomes if it is given the correct cues, if you put rubbish in you get rubbish out. What it does well is to pull together and collate data from a variety of sources that a human may overlook.
Knox Avenue, Howden - Asking £355,000
