INTRODUCTION It’s another new month already, and as unbelievable as it seems we’re into March and heading towards the second quarter of the year - and our second issue following our re-launch! Our February issue proved to be a fantastic success and the feedback has been absolutely phenomenal. One advertiser received so many responses in the first week alone after running her advert and accompanying article, that she has been totally overwhelmed and is having to actually turn business away - quite a position to be in! You will be able to read some glowing testimonials on the Our Goole website from that extremely happy customer, very soon.
Along with many delighted advertisers, we’ve had great feedback from our readers too. Our website and social media platforms are also really taking off, reaching over 40,000 in one week alone. That is quite an achievement in such a relatively short space of time. We’re delighted that Our Goole has flourished so quickly, as it is a real pleasure to put together each issue knowing it will be so warmly received. Our March issue is packed with positive stories, each showcasing the pride and sense of community that makes Goole great. If you have a story or you’d like to get in touch, contact us on: news@ourgoole.co.uk.

The site has direct access to junction 36 of the M62 and the Port of Goole, and sits within the Humber Enterprise Zone with potential for a dedicated rail link
Thousands of new jobs in the pipeline as plans approved Up to 3,000 new jobs could be created as planners have given the go-ahead for a new, large-scale employment and distribution hub in Goole. Developers Sterling Capitol and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), advised by Indigo Planning, have been given unanimous approval by the East Riding of Yorkshire planning committee for the 2.14 million sq ft proposals. The planned development comprises two elements: Goole36 – a total of 96.4 acres across a larger area of the overall site, promoted by the HCA for direct development. Capitol Park - 32 acres controlled by Sterling Capitol, featuring design and build development opportunities, close to the existing Tesco Regional Distribution Centre, Drax biomass facility and the Guardian Glass factory. Together, Goole36 and Capitol Park will include a mix of employment, leisure facilities and car showrooms, plus a 100-bed hotel and a potential, dedicated rail link. The planning decision follows an initial outline application and full environmental impact assessment for the site in 2008, which was deferred. Since then, the HCA has replaced the previous development partner, Yorkshire Forward, funding the completion of Phase 2 of the spine road, running from junction 36 of the M62, through the site, to the Port of Goole.
Mike Heydecke, on behalf of Sterling Capitol, said: ‘This is a significant development for us, underlining our commitment to Capitol Park Goole. These exciting plans will create much-needed business space and jobs in the Goole area. As a company, we are extremely proud of what we have achieved in Yorkshire. Job creation is at the heart of our plans. Premier business locations like Capitol Park, Goole remain popular in a testing economic climate.” Nick Fillingham, Associate Director at Indigo Planning, said: “Goole36 and Capitol Park now represent a major opportunity in the East Riding area, offering significant potential for employment and distribution development on a strategic site close to the M62 and the ports at Goole, Grimsby, Immingham and Hull. Their location within the country’s largest Enterprise Zone is a clear signal of the growth opportunities they represent and the creation of over 3,000 new jobs will provide a significant boost to the local economy.” The planning committee unanimously approved the proposals and permission was granted in principle, deferred pending an acceptable flood risk assessment. 5

Matthew Roberts as Bill Sikes and Jack Armstrong as Fagin
Students bring Dickens classic to life Students at Read School, Drax have wowed audiences with their latest drama production, a two-night rendition of the Dickens musical, Oliver!
Ben Abrams as Oliver and Tom Scholefield as the Artful Dodger
The show rode along on a wave of enthusiasm from the opening bars of ‘Food, Glorious Food!’ to its rousing, full cast finale. Performances of note were: Lily Smith as Nancy – A beautiful portrayal, expertly depicting the many different strands of Nancy’s character. With several well-known numbers to sing this was a big part and Lily carried it off superbly. Jack Armstrong as Fagin - Complete with a Ron Moody-style beard, Jack relished the big songs such as You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two. A special mention must go to Matthew Roberts for stepping in at the last minute to take on the role of Bill Sikes, in addition to that of Mr Sowerberry the undertaker, and portraying both with polish. Alongside superb performances from Year 7 pupils Ben Abrams and Tom Scholefield (Oliver and the Artful Dodger), many of the younger pupils got involved in this year’s production, a testament to the hard work of the creative arts team. 8

Exciting new plans to boost local economy A community team in Goole are putting together exciting plans for how they intend to drive growth, jobs and prosperity in the area.
Goole Coastal Communities Team received £10,000 of Government funding in October 2015, to establish a delivery plan for culture and heritage to be at the core of the continuing regeneration strategy for the town, and to help shape Goole’s future prosperity. The plans lay out practical steps including creating a delivery plan for culture and heritage to celebrate the town’s bicentennial, undertake a review of leisure needs in the town and pilot cultural events on Aire Street. The team’s aspiration is to now explore heritage, culture, recreation and leisure in Goole in more detail. This will involve considering what is currently available, what local preferences are and, most importantly, identifying the economic potential of any new ventures to be targeted whilst also promoting, safeguarding and growing what the town currently has to offer.
Leigh Johnson, Renaissance Co-ordinator for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council told Our Goole: ‘The Vision we’re aiming for is that by 2026 Goole will be a much more cohesive, accessible and attractive town, displaying and celebrating its rich urban character, boats, bridges and bikes, in tune with its industrial infrastructure and water connections.
‘It will be a ‘feel good place’ with a good reputation for activities and things to do whilst also supporting local creative enterprises alongside larger international employers and harnessing global connections. ‘With an enhanced sense of civic pride and a diverse range of employment, recreation and leisure opportunities, that also boost the teatime and evening economy, residents, businesses and visitors will have created a virtual cycle that in turn attracts more people and more investment to Goole.’

New partnership to prov of excellence right on ou
Learning to swim is one of the most daunting, vitally important, difficult yet ultimately rewarding experiences of your life. Overcoming your fears and mastering such a life-saving skill is something no one should be denied. The chance to do it in stunning, tranquil surroundings at a private pool is something of an added bonus! The Carol Saunders Swim School has teamed up with property management expert Penny Bickerdike, to launch the next phase of a nationwide success story that is not only saving lives, but also ensuring swimmers have a fun, positive and enjoyable experience in the process.
that mother and daughter aquatic specialists team Carol and Naiomi now operate a nationwide swim school. Carol is listed as one of the top 50 coaches and aquatics specialists in the UK. Carol has founded a number of local swimming clubs and coached swimmers to win the National Championships.
The February issue of ‘Our Goole’ featured an article on Penny’s intention to make clever use of the stunning, private swimming pool at her Bubwith home and offer the facility on a private hire basis.
Naiomi is an Aquatic Tutor Assessor and Tri-coach and one of her athletes has recently qualified for the GB Age Group Team for 2016.
Taking up Penny’s offer for exclusive use of her beautiful facilities set in idyllic country grounds, a wonderful new business partnership has been formed. Family run Carol Saunders Swim School and Teacher Training Centre was established in 1987; next year will be their 30th successful year. Lessons were first held at Sherburn High School, but things have developed to such an incredible extent, 10
The Swim School prides itself on its exemplary, wellearned reputation - the delivery of high standards of swimming tuition and coaching of all ages and abilities, along with a personable service to customers. All staff are fully qualified, insured and DBS checked swimming teachers, first aiders and lifesavers. As testament to the success of the swim school, most of the staff are previous swimmers taught and coached by Carol and Naiomi.

Activity programme for young people leads to drop in anti-social behaviour An activity programme for young people in Goole has proved so successful that organisers are planning to expand it. Over 3,000 young people attended activity sessions organised by the Goole Youth Coalition during the 2015 school summer holidays. Organisers say the programme contributed to a 13 per cent reduction in youth related anti-social behaviour in the area in August, at a time when incidents usually increase. Over 6,000 hours of activities including swimming lessons, dance, football skills, touch rugby, trampolining, judo, multi sports, street games, archery, circus skills and traditional games were provided at venues across Goole and Old Goole, with an average of 73 youngsters attending each day. Now the Coalition is planning to expand the summer programme for 2016 and to also offer more activities during the autumn and winter months. The Coalition, co-ordinated by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s youth and family support service (YFS), includes Police, Goole Town Council, Goole Academy, Castaway Music Theatre, New Life Church, The Courtyard, Goole Community Group, Groundworks, the Sobriety Project, Goole Go Far and other council departments. Plans for this year’s activities are being drawn up. For details, or to offer support or funding, contact 01482 392804. 12

Issue 002 - March 2016
A Goole couple are anxiously waiting to see if their application for funding from the ‘Children in Need’ charity has been accepted, which would allow them to build a dream ‘sensory room’ for their poorly little boy.
Family hope for funding for ‘amazing little boy’ If successful, the bid will mean parents Tessa Whiting and Liam Parry can concentrate on getting together a whole host of specialised equipment to make that dream a reality. Nineteen-month-old Lucas suffers from a severe form of cerebral palsy known as Spastic Quadriplegia, which affects his entire body. The resulting muscle stiffness means that Lucas may never be able stand or walk and sadly, there is no cure. Tessa and Liam, from Swinefleet, discovered Lucas had the disabling condition when he was just sevenmonths-old, and he has also recently been diagnosed with epilepsy. This latest development has resulted in Lucas been hospitalised twice in the last six months alone, admitted onto the intensive care unit at Scunthorpe Hospital. Because of his condition, Lucas suffers from a severe visual impairment, so lights and sounds are vitally important to his development and quality of life. The present round of fundraising will hopefully provide a sensory room for Lucas at his home, filled with specialised equipment to help him experience as many sensations as possible. The total cost of the equipment still required is around £7,000.
With the help of the Goole Lions Club, Tessa has written to several businesses to ask for their help. Specsavers in Goole raised almost £200 over the Christmas period with their fundraising efforts, and Tesco provided a voucher, with which Tessa bought mirrors and a beanbag for the sensory room; a local charity supplied a specialised ‘bubble wall’, worth £430; the Goole Lions are also making a donation, and offering on-going support.
Due to the huge amount of medical appointments the family needed to juggle, Tessa - a former primary school play co-ordinator - left work last December to become a full-time mum. Together with Lucas, the pair are enjoying lots of fun activities and Tessa is relishing dedicating her time to them packing as much fun as possible into each day. Tessa told Our Goole: ‘The local community have responded brilliantly, everyone’s been fantastic.’ Liam’s work colleagues, at the Humber Centre in Willoughby, held a charity night last year and raised a staggering £3,000 to help support Lucas and his family.
Lucas receives help from a whole host of local services, including physiotherapy, which helps him with his stretching, and the occupational therapy service have provided a pushchair and standing frame. As he gets older, a state-of-the-art wheelchair will be on the shopping list. Lucas also regularly sees a visual impairment specialist, and sees many different consultants on an on-going basis.
Looking to the future, Tessa and Liam remain positive, mainly due to Lucas’s amazing resilience and defiant attitude. Tessa told us: ‘Lucas copes so well with his illness. He’s always smiling, and really keeps us going. ‘We’re quite confident about the future given his amazing attitude – he won’t let any of this beat him. He’s so very determined. The consultants said he’d never sit up or roll over – and he can do both! He’s such an amazing little boy!’ 15

This month business and marketing expert Alan Hemingway explains the importance of keeping on top of your firm’s financial figures
Knowing your numbers With the New Year being a popular time to start a business, you will now be in the exciting stage of it all being new and really enjoying trying to grow the business. Quite rightly this is important, but I often see with start-ups that they can miss out one of the key components of the business at this stage - which ultimately can decide whether it is a success or failure. No matter what business you are in, you need to always know your numbers because if you do not know who owes you money, you will not be getting your cash in to fund your growth. You also need
to always be aware of who you owe money to and be fully on top of what your bank balance is. You should always know how profitable you are as well and there are a number of ways you can track your financial information: • The traditional way of using a manual cash book • Making use of a spread sheet • Using accounting software As a new business you really should be looking at the accounting software. The accounting software industry is going through the equivalent of the Industrial Revolution at the moment and the traditional desktop packages such as Sage are losing out to the new players in the cloud. There are many advantages of going into the cloud:

Business of the
month
Mark Rodwell of YorLan Property has honed his building skills, acquired over some 30 years in the industry, to lead his company to the forefront of the competition in both the commercial and private sector
Working closely with clients, architects and local authorities, YorLan ensure all work is completed to the highest of standards and their customers are not just satisfied - they’re delighted with their choice of professional builders
22
Mark, has your business always been based in this area? I started YorLan Property when I lived in Breighton. I’ve been in this area for twenty years now; we also operate across the whole of Yorkshire, and sometimes Lancashire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
We’re fully aware of the trust a customer has by letting builders into their home, and like to know that our customers are confident that we will respect their home, possessions and garden throughout the whole process. Although it may be our building site, it’s still somebody’s home...
to a high level. Most of our work is from ‘word of mouth’ and people are prepared to wait for us to undertake work for them. Building work is much more than the finished product. We ensure that disruption and mess is kept to a minimum and we involve the customer every step of the way.
Tell us about your industry training? I started as an apprentice bricklayer in 1983, and have since taken further courses for various machinery, tools and specialised equipment. I have recently passed the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) course at college, which will prove useful should I take on an apprentice myself.
How do you find the local area from a business perspective? There are still people who want quality work doing, and are prepared to pay a fair price for that; there are also people continually looking for the ‘cheapest quote’, despite the many TV programs showing that this is not the best policy. We have been VERY busy for the last two years and have work booked for many months to come.
Tell us a little about YorLan Property? We undertake every job as if we were working on our own home. All our tradesmen are qualified, timeserved, conscientious craftsmen.
Looking ahead, what does the future hold for YorLan? As long as we maintain our current stability, we’ll be happy. We’re not selling a product, we’re selling a service and like to think that it’s
Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? It’s very useful to us. It gets our name out to new customers; which, in turn, expands by ‘word of mouth’. Building work is not continuous - once we’ve built an extension, the customer doesn’t usually want another in six months. Therefore getting our name and reputation out to as many people as possible is vitally important. These magazines are a much more efficient way to advertise than newspapers, as people tend to hold on to them for future use. See our advert on page 13

This month we focus on Jerry Green Dog Rescue, based in Gilberdyke “All the money raised from this goes straight back to help and care for more dogs in need.” Jerry Green’s was established in 1961, initially opening the first branch in North Lincolnshire. Once established Jerry went on to open four more rescue centres across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire including the centre in Gilberdyke, which is today manned by a team of dedicated staff and incredibly loyal volunteers.
Lucy Pottage, Centre Support Officer for Jerry Green’s said: We exist to relieve suffering dogs who need care and attention by rescuing them, taking them in, treating them and caring for them ensuring the best possible quality of life until we find them a loving home. Our Gilberdyke Centre opened in 1995 and since opening we have rehomed over 2,400 dogs to their forever homes. Every year the number of dogs needing rehoming and rescue space needed increases. In 2013 we rehomed 99 dogs, in 2014 the number increased to
155 and in 2015 we had our best year yet, rehoming 180 dogs to their forever homes. We are hoping that in 2016 it will be the best year ever for rescue and rehoming. Our Gilberdyke centre offers rehoming and rescue, a small stock selection but we also now offer a grooming service to the general public. All the money raised from this goes straight back to help and care for more dogs in need. Our prices are all suggested donations and are incredibly reasonable. Rachel our groomer has worked with rescue dogs for over 15 years and is a fully qualified, fantastic groomer and always puts the dog’s welfare and needs first. Every year we host our annual summer show and we are hoping this year will be our greatest fundraising event yet. We have a wide range of activities including a Fun Dog Show, BBQ, Tombola and ‘have a go’ agility. We are desperate for ‘bric- a-brac’ prizes for our tombola and fundraising activities. We are always appealing for soft treat donations to help us with our daily training, and also put these to good use when administering medication to poorly dogs in our care.

Can you offer us a loving, forever home? TESS AND JACK
Tess & Jack
Older Labrador pair looking for a loving retirement home with someone who is prepared to care for elderly dogs. Tess and Jack adore one another’s company and have been around lots of other dogs here at the centre. They greet everyone happily and just love cheese!
JAZZ
Jazz
Jazz is a gorgeous Staffordshire bull terrier girl who ended up with us due to a change in family circumstances. Jazz is fantastic with other dogs and loves nothing more than to snuggle into you when she gets the chance. She will make anyone a fantastic loving companion.
Pepper Pepper is a beautiful gentle young girl, who came to us from the stray kennels. She is looking for a loving owner who will help her overcome her initial worries. She is super loving, and the lucky person who adopts Pepper will be in for plenty of love and licks in the future!
To adopt one of these lovely dogs you would fill out a simple home finder questionnaire with a member of the rehoming team, and then be matched with an ideal companion. Following a successful ‘meet and match’ procedure, the centre does a simple home check to ensure the garden is fully fenced and there is a warm place with a bed for your new companion to sleep on. All dogs are fully vaccinated, microchipped, spayed or neutered, wormed and if necessary, treated for fleas.
Pepper
Jerry Green’s are in urgent need of local helpers to host small fundraising activities such as pub quizzes or tombolas. This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc ponders the impact of George Osborne’s impending second home stamp duty tax
Playing a waiting game over imminent tax changes In April this year the Chancellor’s new tax, stamp duty on second properties will be implemented: What impact will these changes have? Are investors well prepared? Will the number of buyers reduce? The Bank of England confirmed that buy-tolet borrowing is approaching its pre-crash peak, whilst house prices increased by 10% in the year to January 2016. The demand for investment properties continues to rise unabated. This suggests that George Osborne’s changes have prompted property investors to enter the market earlier than planned, as they aim
to complete any purchases before the April stamp duty hike deadline. Whether this demand continues after April is debatable, the 3 percent stamp duty implementation could well dampen such demand. Buy-ToLet and Property-Developer investment continues to deliver generous returns when compared to more traditional investment vehicles. Although the number of buyers may reduce, will it be enough to dampen or even reduce prices significantly? We’ll just have to wait and see, but I for one doubt it.

SPORTSNEWS NATIONAL NETBALL STAR For most 17-year-olds the challenge of A-levels would be more than enough, but not so for Lucy Pritchard. The former Goole High School student who is currently studying at Selby College for her A-levels has recently qualified for the AoC Sport National Netball Team, in a final squad of just twenty players.
Lucy and her teammates got through to the national finals. For the past four years Lucy has played for the Yorkshire team and Selby College.
Not only does Lucy currently play for the Selby College team, she also competes for Goole, Huddersfield and Yorkshire. The dedicated sports-star began playing for Goole when she was eight-years-old. By the time she was in Year 7 she had moved on to play for the County team, having joined a netball academy in Year 6.
If all of this sounds like more than enough for a full-time student, Lucy also has a part-time job as a lifeguard. Then, every Friday after college Lucy teaches three dance classes. Lucy has also achieved success in squash, having played for the Yorkshire squad last season. Representing the national team, Lucy has fixtures in Glasgow in March, Guildford in May and Cardiff in June. A busy year lies ahead!
Last August, as part of the Huddersfield Giants under-16s squad,
After she completes her A-levels, Lucy, from Goole, is keen to go on to university to study Sports Psychology.

Martial arts students in Goole are passing their gradings with flying colours, thanks to the distinct advantage of being trained and mentored by a 5th Dan black belt martial arts master. Paul Strauther, from Goole, last week guided every single one of his ‘Defence Lab’ students to success on ‘Grading Day’, taking them one step closer to achieving their own personal martial arts goals. Paul is one of only two people in the world to be awarded with a 5th Dan in the ‘DNA Fight Science’ System, a prestigious accolade he achieved in 2013. He started on his martial arts journey over twenty years ago at the age of fifteen, when he began training with Andy Norman, founder of Defence Lab, who has worked on many Hollywood action films training stars such as Tom Cruise and Christian Bale. After twenty years of hard work and serious dedication, Paul was well versed in the benefits and life changing improvements that martial
arts can bring to people’s lives, and decided to bring the Defence Labs classes to his hometown of Goole. The classes, for both adults and children proved extremely popular and offer something for people of all abilities who want to improve their lives. Classes are designed to offer students the best martial arts education – whether you’re looking to lose weight, learn to defend yourself, gain muscle tone, flexibility, strength, or simply gain confidence. Extremely motivated and completely dedicated to his students, Paul is ensuring they each reach their goals, achieving black belt and beyond. Defence Labs run their Kids Martial Arts class every Monday, 5.306.15pm and their DNA Adult class every Monday, 7.30-8.30pm at Elite Fitness, Goole. Tel: 0800 772 0854.
