INTRODUCTION May is already upon us, bringing with it two very welcome bank holidays the early May holiday ties in with the traditional May Day festival celebrations and maypole dancing, and the spring bank holiday rounds off the month. West Park are hosting a three-day project in partnership with local primary schools, with pupils showcasing their music and dancing skills. Here’s hoping the weather behaves. It has been another hugely positive month for Goole as the Civic Society proudly unveiled its first ever blue plaque, permanently tying the town of today to a ‘famous son’ from its past. Goole’s unique transport service GoFar have also been celebrating after successfully securing a hat-trick of funding and the great news for
Goole continued, with the announcement that Goole Hospital has been rated ‘good’ following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission.
Community spirit has also shone through as Goole AFC’s injured goalkeeper Jack Wheat was overwhelmed with support since suffering his horrifying injuries in his club’s debut match. Jack spoke to Our Goole about the further surgery he is facing, his plans for the future and his gratitude to supporters who have donated to the crowdfunding page set up in his honour. Our region’s next generation of football talent are also doing us proud, as a fifteen-strong team of students from Howden School prepare to take part in the finals of the most coveted school football competition in the country. All in all there’s a lot to smile about in Goole!

HONOURING GOOLE’S OWN ‘GENTLEMAN’S GENTLEMAN’
Actor Stephen Fry sent a special message to mark the unveiling of Goole Civic Society’s first Blue Plaque - in memory of a Goole cricketer and First World War victim who was the inspiration for P. G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves. In the year that marks 100 years since Percy Jeeves’s death on the Somme, family members were among more than 40 guests who recently attended the unveiling of the plaque on the Oddfellows building near Percy’s childhood home in Manuel Street, Goole.
The plaque, at the corner of Manuel Street and Boothferry Road, was funded by Goole & District Lottery, Goole Town Cricket Club and the P. G. Wodehouse Society (UK).
Percy’s great nephew, Keith Mellard, and his wife Audrey travelled from their home in Aberdeen for the event. He was joined by Brian Halford, cricket writer and author of The Real Jeeves, a book about Percy’s life. Keith, whose grandfather Alick Jeeves was Percy’s brother, spoke of his pride in the great uncle he had never met but felt he knew. Percy Jeeves spent his boyhood at 72 Manuel Street and played for Goole Town Cricket Club before becoming professional and playing County Cricket for Warwickshire. In 1913, P. G. Wodehouse saw him play a match at Cheltenham and was so impressed he later used the name for Bertie Wooster’s immaculate manservant Jeeves. Stephen Fry, who played Jeeves in the TV series Jeeves and Wooster sent a personal message to the people of Goole, which was read out at the unveiling: “I am so heartened and happy to learn that Percy Jeeves, the cricketer who inspired P.G. Wodehouse’s immortal gentleman’s personal gentleman, is to be memorialised in his hometown of Goole. The original Jeeves’s gentlemanly deportment, respectful manner and quiet efficiency were the perfect model for Wodehouse’s Jeeves. The sacrifice that Percy made, however, reminds us of what the truth of life was like for so many of his generation. We salute him.” The chair of Goole Civic Society, Margaret Hicks-Clarke, said: “We could think of no finer person to honour with our first Blue Plaque. He was a great cricketer and a brave soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his country.” 5

FROM A POLICE Local officers focus on raising awareness of Rogue Traders This month Sgt Ryan Reed of Goole Neighbourhood Policing Team highlights the work local officers have undertaken to combat bogus callers, who often target the most vulnerable members of our communities
‘There are local Neighbourhood watch schemes in your area for support. Contact your local police team for more information.’
6
Issue 004 - May 2016
E PERSPECTIVE: When traders turned up at John’s house offering to fix his roof, he called the police because he knew his roof didn’t need fixing. Turns out they were fraudulent traders.
When two men claiming to be from the ‘Water Board’ called at Jean’s house, she called the police because Jean knew ‘Water Boards’ no longer exist. The men are now behind bars.
Goole and Pocklington Police officers have recently taken part in a force wide campaign to raise awareness of rogue traders and bogus callers. Visits have been conducted at local builders’ merchants, banks, community centres and providers of sheltered housing. Unfortunately this kind of crime appears to be something that is becoming more common. It can often target those that are perceived to be the most vulnerable in our communities.
women or children, sometimes a combination. They can be smartly or casually dressed. They may even be in a work uniform. However a genuine caller will be happy to wait outside while you check on them by calling their organisation or calling a family member or neighbour for support.
Thankfully Goole has a strong neighbourhood watch scheme in place that runs seamlessly alongside such police campaigns, with officers passing information on to members who in turn inform those under their umbrella to be on their guard. Policing teams also target local areas where reports have been received of suspicious activities, providing a strong police presence and conducting high visibility patrols.
If you suspect a bogus caller is at your door call the police on 999. Even if it turns out to be a false alarm we are here to support you. We would rather attend a false alarm than not be called and end up attending a distraction burglary.
Bogus Callers are often linked to an acquisitive crime called distraction burglary. This is where criminals call at your house posing as officials or asking for your help with something. They make up a story to get into your home with just one intention: to help themselves to what does not belong to them. They are not always easy to identify. Some work alone, but often they work in groups of two or more. Usually one person will knock at your door with a convincing excuse that seems genuine or urgent. The talker will persuade you to let them in and keep you occupied whilst others sneak in and search your house to steal cash and valuables. They can be men,
Rogue traders call at your door and offer to do work on your home or garden that will be either unnecessary or vastly overpriced. They can often have had no formal training to carry out the work. Some have links with distraction burglars. •Don’t ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this. • Don’t allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don’t, call the police on 999. • Do discuss any work you feel needs carrying out on your property with a relative or friend who can help you find a reputable trader. • Don’t agree to any work or sign anything on the spot.

A sad day for Goole as the Bedale Bandit leaves Ocean Lock and heads down the Ouse for the last time
Goodbye Bedale Bandit A Goole business has bid a sad farewell to an ‘old friend’ as a barge used by their firm for the past nine years as an innovative ‘storage’ facility has left Goole for the last time. The Kerfoot Group bought the 600 metric tonne barge back in May 2007 from a company in Liverpool, to use as an imaginative form of additional storage for several tonnes of edible oil. The Bedale Bandit, named after the market town where the company was founded, became a fundamental part of the firm’s operations and somewhat infamous around
8
the Port of Goole. The vessel’s initial journey to Goole was unusual in itself. She was built in 1977, originating from Poland in the Gdansk shipyards before being brought to Liverpool to store edible oils on the Mersey River. When the Kerfoot Group acquired the barge she had to be towed around the coast by a tug, which proved to be quite an epic journey. The Bedale Bandit is a ‘Push Barge’,
Issue 004 - May 2016
meaning it has no engine and needs to be ‘pushed’ by another barge to get from place to place. A tug based in Oban, Scotland pushed the barge from Liverpool around the south coast and then north in to Hull, and onwards in to Goole. The voyage was due to take eight days but in the end took a total of twelve, due to stormy weather around Cornwall forcing the Captain to take shelter several times. The Bedale Bandit then went through a major restoration project in dry dock at Hull, but unfortunately days before the champagne corks popped she was struck whilst moored by another ship. The restoration project was reinstated, all damage repaired and eventually the Bedale Bandit became integral to the group’s storage facilities.
Then, last year the group’s directors made a decision to expand their oil storage terminal in Goole and invested in excess of £1.5million, taking their total storage there to over 5 million litres. An unfortunate consequence of that was that the barge had sadly ‘served its purpose’ for the Goole firm. John Thompson, Group Operations Director told Our Goole: “It’s amazing how quickly a bond grows between people and boats, large and small, and over the years we became very fond of the Bedale Bandit, but were now faced with the prospect of having her scrapped. “Thankfully we were able to find a buyer and she is now destined to spend the next stage of her operational life as a crane barge operating out of Albert Dock in Hull.”

Students go totem crazy for community project A specialist chainsaw artist is using his unusual skills to help students create a spectacular display of carved ‘totem pole’ sculptures at a local neurological care centre. Sue Ryder’s Holme Hall in Holme-uponSpalding-Moor is a specialist neurological care centre which looks after adults with life-changing conditions affecting their brain and nervous system including stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. The centre will see their recently developed woodland walk area transformed with the spectacular structures, providing inspiration, a talking point and a place of reflection for the local community. The project is a culmination of work from conceptual artist Jerry Worley, his wife Alyson who works at Holme
Hall, specialist chainsaw artist Mick Burn and staff and first year Art & Design students from Selby College. A competition was held for the students to come up with an idea for the sculptures, with the winning designs created by Eleanor Martin, Phoebe Waring, Laura Quinn, Liv Bray, Bryony Howard, Megan Cahill and Hannah Grafton. The first cuts will be done by Mick in mid-April and it is anticipated that it will take two weeks to produce all of the sculptures, with the official opening in early May. Students, residents and staff will all be in attendance for the unveiling, where there will be plaques mounted with each of the students’ names to commemorate their involvement.

Services set to soar thanks to successful cash bids
A unique transport service in Goole is celebrating after securing thousands of pounds worth of funding, enabling them to extend their services and to also provide an additional service for disabled youngsters. Goole GoFar - a none profit transport charity and social enterprise providing accessible transport to the region’s most vulnerable, isolated and socially excluded - have recently been successful in three funding bids. With their fleet of eight minibuses and one community car, the group offer regular transport and outings to people who through age, sickness or ability cannot access regular transport. The combined cash windfall of over £10,400 will now enable them to extend their current projects whilst developing new ones to benefit even more of the community. The group have received a total of £6,720 from the ‘Goole Fields Community Wind Farm Fund’, which will go towards GoFar’s ‘Extending Opportunities’ project. This scheme particularly focuses on residents in Old Goole, Goole Fields and the Marshland communities (Rawcliffe, Cowick and Snaith), and the additional funding will allow them to provide access to a wider range of leisure and cultural activities to people in those areas.
The group have also been successful with their funding bid from the ‘Sixpenny Wood Wind Farm Community Benefit Scheme’, receiving a total of £3,713 which will go towards their ‘Howdenshire Area Transport Scheme (HATS)’. This project focuses on improving access for young people, adults and the elderly in their leisure time, enhancing social experiences and interaction. Goole & District Lottery have completed the cash injection hat-trick, with funding which will create a whole new service for Goole’s youngsters. With this extra cash, GoFar are setting up a service for children and young people from Goole Academy, which will allow them access to facilities at Goole Leisure Centre on a weekly basis for an entire half term. This service will be particularly helpful as it is aimed specifically towards wheelchair bound users and children with movement issues. To see for yourself the unique services GoFar provide, pop along to the Community Open Day on Thursday, September 1. The team will be available at their HQ on Lower Bridge Street from 9am - 3pm, with refreshments provided. For details contact 01405 780344. 15

GET GROWING IF YOU’RE SHOWING! Green-fingered horticultural enthusiasts need to pop their thinking caps on and get planting if an entry in to Howden Show’s ‘grub in a tub’ class is on this year’s to-do list, as now is the time to get planting those seeds. Introduced to the horticulture schedule two years ago, the ‘grub in a tub’ class has proved popular among adults and children alike. It requires entrants to grow something edible in a container no bigger than a bucket. The judges will be looking for entries that taste, smell and look good. Prizes are available in both adult and children’s sections. Chairman of the committee, Sean Welsh said: “This class is a really fun way to encourage people of all ages to try their hand at growing their own food. Planning ahead is key – if you’re thinking of entering you’ll need to decide what you’re growing and get it planted sooner rather than later so that it’s ready for Howden Show on Sunday, July 3.” For more information, email: secretary@howdenshow.co.uk and to keep up to date with all the latest news, visit: www.howdenshow.co.uk.

Flood of support fo life-threatening in Goole AFC’s injured goalkeeper Jack Wheat has been overwhelmed with support since suffering the horrifying injuries that could have claimed his life and have indeed killed-off his football career. Jack (23) was seventeen minutes into his debut match for the club when a collision on the pitch changed his life forever - leaving him with such horrific head and facial injuries he has been told he must never don his boots again. Jack suffered four fractures to his head and face, a fractured eye socket, compressed cheekbone, fractured skull and broken jaw.
Antony Dickson DipFa Financial Adviser
Initially thinking he simply had a ‘big cut around his eye’, Jack didn’t realise the devastating reality of his injuries. Play continued until a teammate noticed Jack’s state and drew the attention of the ref, who halted the match. “I just thought this can’t be happening, it was a big shock. I just felt my eye closing, like all the bones around it closing in. I knew there was a gash above my head because I had blood on my gloves. There was no

or footballer after njuries pain when it happened, only when the swelling came out later. It was only when I got in the changing room and I started touching my face and there was nothing there. The bones and curves of my face were just flat. That’s when I knew there was something wrong.” Jack was taken to Telford Hospital where doctors assessed the extent of his injuries and planned his surgery. The intricate operation was carried out just over a week later and Jack endured over four hours of surgery as he had his jaw wired and plates inserted into his face. “The doctors at the hospital asked me if I had been assaulted because they said they were the worst facial injuries they had ever seen.”
Speaking of his recovery, Jack told Our Goole: “I have my good days and my bad days. My recovery is so far so good although my cheek bone is still flat so I have chosen to undergo more surgery to correct that when the swelling goes down. It will take three months for everything to fully heal, but because I need more surgery it will set me back longer. I’m expecting it to be about six or seven months, maybe longer but hopefully not. I had what I believed to be a temporary wire put in my jaw, but I discovered at my last appointment that will have to stay in for life.” Jack was warned he should never play again as any further impact may result in him losing his sight. This has hit him hard: “After being told how dangerous it would be for me to risk playing, I have to stop - which is heartbreaking, it has been hard to take. “I’ve always played football since I was a boy and it’s a big part of my life, the thought that I won’t be putting my boots and gloves on again has destroyed me.”
Jack has also lost out on a job he had lined up as he will be unable to work for many months, so his club have set up a fundraising page to raise £5,000 to help. Looking to the future with a positive attitude, Jack hopes to maintain an involvement in football, albeit from the sidelines: “I’m hoping to go into coaching, specialising in goalkeepers, and also plan to help out with the team next season at Goole when I am fully fit.” The incredible support has helped Jack through dark times: “I would like to thank all the players and staff at Goole AFC, friends and family for their support. I would also like to thank everyone who has wished me well and donated money to help me while I am out of work. It has been so overwhelming for me and my family with the amount of people and football clubs that have come together to support me. Unfortunately my football career has come to an end but my health is the main priority. Planning approval has been confirmed and work has now started to build a new Carpentry and Joinery workshop at Goole College. The new workshop is part of a ÂŁ500,000 expansion project for the college which will see the existing engineering and construction skills workshop double in size and to include new equipment to accommodate the provision of Carpentry and Joinery.

covering the skill sets needed to fulfil local demand as established by the strategic objectives outlined by the Humber LEP.
The new facility is thought to be the only one of its kind in the region, and the aim is to help deliver skills directly to the local industries including the Engineering and Construction industries as well as the Energy Industry.
Courses such as Fabrication, Welding, Construction Brickwork and Joinery, as well as qualifications in IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) and NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety Health) will be perfectly supported by this new training workshop and will be available to enrol on to start in September.
The work is due to be completed by July and the workshop will facilitate a wide range of new courses
The new Carpentry and Joinery course is an exciting addition to Goole College and offers students the

chance to learn the construction trade in the brand new dedicated joinery workshops. The workshops will all be fully equipped with the latest industry requirements and classrooms fully kitted out with interactive technology and supporting software. Caron Wright, Goole College Principal, said: “Goole College already has an established base in skills training with its Welding Centre of Excellence. This new workshop is the next phase of the college’s commitment to providing a curriculum offer which meets the needs of students and produces a skilled workforce in the Goole area which can facilitate economic growth.” This workshop is the second phase of the college’s expansion project; at the end of last year, the college celebrated the opening of its new Business & Logistics Centre; providing bespoke training and skills courses, as well as conference and meeting facilities for local employers and businesses. In addition to the Business & Logistics Centre, another exciting development has been the CITB Internet Test Centre, recently opened by HCUK Training at the Goole College site. This internet test centre offers Construction Skills Certificate Scheme cards (CSCS) in Health and Safety and Health and Safety in the Construction Environment. The expansion project has been jointly funded by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and the college. The Humber LEP has ambitious strategic objectives for the region and one of these is the need for a skilled and productive workforce. The Boothferry Road site is conveniently located for the 20,000 approximate inhabitants of the Goole area and once complete, this will be the only vocational skills training facility specialising in Carpentry and Joinery available locally without utilising major transport links, making this not only an exciting addition to the College, but also to the region and the ever growing work force. 21

This month business and marketing expert Alan Hemingway has been offering his expert advice on start-up businesses to a group of future entrepreneurs.
Savvy students brave our own Dragons Den I have just got back to the office after myself and some of the Hemingway Bailey team have been real life Dragons at a local school with a class of Year 10’s. It was really uplifting to hear the business ideas and a lot of effort had gone in to the presentations and out of the 5 businesses that pitched to us, we will be giving them all some capital to start their businesses.
Over the next 3 months with one of my team mentoring them (which will also be a great experience for my young team members) they will buy stock, price and market the products and services and have to negotiate with suppliers. When the money starts coming in they will have to decide how to reinvest and what is making them money. The teachers at the school are fantastic, but no textbook can ever replicate the experience of running a real, live business. Any profits made are split equally between the students and school funds and so they have a great incentive to do well. Even more reason to keep on top of their figures and know what profit they are making !

Issue 004 - May 2016 At Hemingway Bailey we come across a lot of young people who have business ideas and we are always happy to help them as much as we can. It is much easier to start a business now for a young person than in the early 1980’s when I was that age. A lot of potential funding is available with the likes of the Youth Bank and Princes Trust for young people. With the growth of the internet, they have access to a lot more low cost solutions and also information at their fingertips. You are never too young to start a business and the likes of Sir Richard Branson and Lord Sugar are great examples of this. In a lot of ways it is better to do it whilst you are young before your personal costs increase with the likes of mortgages, high cost rent and other commitments. If you are a young person and you have a business idea, do not be afraid to ask for advice. I am always happy to have a chat over a coffee to offer advice and let you know what you need to be doing. The most important thing to stress is if you have an idea and a dream, go for it !

volunteers bloom as they help others A dedicated team of green-fingered volunteers in Goole are turning lives around not only for the community they are assisting, but taking themselves on a satisfying journey of self-discovery and development as they work.
Goole’s ‘Green Team’ is a unique charity gardening service which provides practical, low-cost help to a broad number of older and less-abled residents. Offering their services within a ten-mile radius of the town, the team work relentless to tackle the gardens that can often be a source of distress to those advancing in age or affected by illness or disability.
26
But the real beauty of this inspiring scheme is in the staggering rewards the volunteer gardeners themselves are receiving. The team currently operate a full-time service all thanks to their 31 loyal and enthusiastic volunteers, and the scheme are now appealing for more helpers to come and enjoy the enriching experience.
Issue 004 - May 2016
Green Team’s Volunteer Co-ordinator Cheryl Price told Our Goole: “Our vision is to guide, inspire, involve and support each and every one of our volunteers, and the benefits they acquire from being part of our close-knit, supportive team are enormous. “Working alongside a fully-trained supervisor each individual is guided and encouraged every step of the way, so even the most un-experienced can participate. Our friendly team teach and guide all of our volunteers so they can effectively learn ‘on the job’. “Going into the homes and gardens of some of our community’s most vulnerable it is vital there is a high level of trust, respect and confidence. “We offer a highly trusted, reliable service which allows people to continue living in their life-long family homes, and enjoy their gardens for longer. “However the most significant positive is the benefits enjoyed by our actual volunteers. The sense of satisfaction they experience is enormous. Helping others gives a great amount of pride and an immense sense of self-worth. “They gain experience of working as part of a team, of providing a community service. It gets them outdoors, it can build or restore confidence. They learn how to maintain a garden, what tools are used for, it is a fantastic way of keeping fit, meeting new friends and having fun - and it can also help enhance career prospects.
“Volunteering shows a sense of commitment, reliability and time-keeping, it can really improve your CV and obviously there is a potential reference there for a future job, work placement or learning opportunity. “We encourage and support all our volunteers so highly, they become close friends. Helping out provides them with a lot of enjoyment and gives them a real purpose, it’s amazing to see the growth people can make given this kind of encouragement, help and support.” The team have expanded operations to include new volunteer opportunities at their West Park site using The Training Room and poly tunnels. Still in its infancy, the aim of this venture is to establish a team of community fundraising volunteers providing ‘table-top gardening’ for all. The set-up offers a perfect environment for those who wish to get involved with gardening but can’t manage the outdoors. The warm tunnels are kitted out with waist-height tables, perfect for anyone with back or hip problems, and the ultimate aim is to plant and propagate seedlings which will eventually blossom and then be sold on to raise funds for the charity. Volunteers simply need to be a minimum of sixteen years of age, have a small interest in gardening and a desire to make a difference. To help out from as little as three hours per week, contact 01405 837126 or email: info@thegreenteam.org.uk

Business of the
month
This month we cast the spotlight on prestigious car dealership Glews Garage owned by Jos Richardson & Son Ltd
Celebrating their 125th anniversary next year, Our Goole spoke to director Jane Richardson about some of the significant changes that have shaped the family-owned business over the years Jane, can you tell our readers a little about your rich history: Jos Richardson & Son Ltd was founded in 1892 by my great, great grandfather Jos Richardson and was originally a coal merchants. In 1978 my grandfather David and my father Tim bought Glews Garage. The Glews site has changed and grown substantially and now we also own four other filling stations - Longs Corner at Howden, York Road Garage at Escrick, Filey Service Station and Primrose Valley Service Station. You have expanded significantly, can you tell us about that? We are constantly diversifying. Over the years we have had a number of businesses from coal merchants to travel agents! We also change with the needs of our customers, who in recent times expect more from their filling stations so the shops have expanded into convenience stores. Any milestones along the way? Building the second dealership to house the Peugeot franchise, Richwood, in the 90s was a significant investment. The expansion of the petrol station in ’92 and going 24 hours were noteworthy, and getting the roundabout built was a significant milestone.
28
How do you find the local area from a business perspective? Goole has been our base for 125 years so we have great affection for the area and it has always been good for us. We employ over 120 people the majority of whom are local. You are renowned for helping in the community, how important is that to you?: It has always been important for the family to give back to the local area, my father Tim was heavily involved in the re-development of Westfield banks Rugby Club and very active in the Roundtable and Rotary groups, who both do a substantial amount for the community and local charities. We have always felt it is important to support local charities and in the past we have raised money for Castaway, The Waterways Museum, and local schools and sports clubs. We support local youngsters like Charlie Atkins, and in recent years have worked alongside Yorkshire Air Ambulance to raise thousands to support their invaluable work. Do you have any extraordinary customer stories to share with our readers? A few years ago we sold a car to a
soldier in Afghanistan after he found it online whilst serving overseas and when he was on leave he called in to pick it up… an example of the global economy! There seems to be lots on the horizon, what does the future hold? We are currently undergoing a huge re-development project at Glews for a 60 bay overnight HGV Parking facility, with seven diesel lanes to cater for an expanded range of diesel fuel cards, and gas oil will also be on sale. The petrol station will also be expanded with facilities like showers and a larger retail space and additional parking. We will also be putting in a Subway. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising with us? Advertising in Our Goole helps us reach our local audience, it is unlike other magazines of its type which are often just full of adverts. We like Our Goole because it has good features and articles about the local area so we think people are more likely to read the magazine. Also we like to support local publications.

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports on the drop-off of enquiries as predicted earlier in the year
Stamp duty hike causes potential slow down in buy-to-let market Interest in new buy-to-let purchases dropped as expected by over a quarter in March this year as the dreaded Stamp Duty deadline approached. Enquiries were down significantly compared with March 2015, the fall reversing the upward trend between December and February when there was a substantial year on year increase. This reduction in interest indicates a potential slowdown in the buy-to-let market, but what’s not yet clear is if this will only turn out to be a short-term pause due entirely to the stamp duty amendment. It could be that investors are waiting until the tax changes have had time to bed in before they review their business and continue to make purchases, only time will tell.
This could remove some of the competition for smaller properties and spell some welcome good news for many first-time buyers. Q. Who has to pay it? A. Anyone who is buying additional residential properties, for example a holiday home, within England, Wales, Northern Ireland Q. How is the tax charged? A. Regular Stamp Duty is, these days, charged on a tiered basis (so you only pay the higher rate on the slice above any threshold – the same as income tax). But the 3% surcharge still effectively works as a slab tax. So, the 3% loading applies to the entire purchase price of the property.

Over a third of Brits don’t know how much it costs to run a home New research from leading property website, Zoopla has revealed that more than a third of Brits do not know how much it costs to run their home on a monthly basis. Of those surveyed, the over 70s turned out to be the most naïve with nearly half (43 per cent) admitting to not knowing the costs of their property. Not far behind, those in their 20s were also particularly unknowing with 42 per cent admitting to being unaware, with one in 10 saying they had no idea whatsoever. According to the research, a substantial one in 10 admitted that they do not pay attention to their monthly direct debits, and whilst over half of us (55 per cent) know what our monthly running costs are individually, we don’t know what our monthly total bills come to.

Toners & Ink still Success for ‘open for business’ Jerry Green A long-established businesswoman from Snaith is reassuring her customers that although they are losing their high-street presence, they are very much still ‘open for business’ and providing the same great level of service. In today’s high-tech world where much business is conducted solely online, Charlotte Hargreaves of Toners & Ink in Snaith has made the forward-thinking decision to streamline her business and do away with all the unnecessary overheads of a high street shop. As a busy mum-of-two, Charlotte is going ‘mobile’. With over twenty six years knowledge and experience of working with computers, Charlotte has built up an impressive client base incorporating both corporate and individual clients with her business Toners & Ink. Based in Snaith, Charlotte is perfectly placed to serve Goole, Howden, Selby, Drax, Hensall and Goodall. The shop will be closing in the next few weeks and Charlotte would like to thank all customers both old and new for their continued loyalty, and reassure them that the move will ensure they can keep their prices low and their service levels as high as possible.

SPORTSNEWS Snipers set to take down the opposition Our Goole publisher CreateTVT are proud to announce the sponsorship (via our sister title the ‘Selby Journal’) of local youth football team the ‘Snaith Snipers’. The Snipers are one of two teams representing Snaith Juniors in the Under 6 age group, and currently have fifteen children (a mixture of boys and girls) taking part in their weekly training sessions. The youngsters are honing their football skills and preparing for next season, when they begin playing in the Selby and District Junior Football League. The Snaith Snipers will be taking part in four football tournaments during the summer, so Our Goole will be keeping tabs on their progress and keeping our readers updated on their achievements. Here at CreateTVT we’re very keen to promote local children’s sporting groups and initiatives with both our ‘Our Goole’ and ‘Selby Journal’ publications and this sponsorship has provided the entire Snipers team with a full kit for the upcoming season. Good luck Snaith Snipers! Time to shine for region’s talented young footballers
A talented team of students from Howden Secondary School have the chance to make history this month when they take part in the prestigious ESFA PlayStation Schools Cup final at the Madejski Stadium, Reading. Going further than any other school football team in the long history of Howden, the fifteen-strong man squad has battled through several difficult rounds in their U15s category before reaching the showcase final after a tense penalty shoot-out at the semi-final stage. In preparation for the big day, the Year 10 squad will also be paraded around the pitch at Hull City’s upcoming SkyBet Championship game against Brentford after the club kindly offered their support. After that all focus will switch to the day itself when the boys travel south to take part in the most coveted school football competition in the country. An impressive 30 teams, both boys and girls categories, will go head-to-head across an action-packed three days at the home of Reading FC. Howden’s meeting
with the Oxford-based Gosford Hill School is the final game of the day on Monday, May 16, 5.30pm kick-off. The road to Reading started all the way back in September but coach John Taylor, who started working with the team when they first joined the school in Year 7, views their date with destiny as a culmination of the hard work they’ve been doing since they started secondary school. The team is eagerly awaiting their tracksuits for the trip, kindly funded by a sponsor of the school, while PlayStation will also be supplying a new kit on the day to ensure they look their best. The boys will be warming up in Reading FC’s £1million indoor training facility before making their way onto the Madejski Stadium pitch, and with over 6,000 spectators attending last year’s finals, the young footballers are sure to enjoy showcasing the skills that have taken them from playing on their school pitch to competing in a 24,000 capacity stadium. Good luck lads! 37
