Doncaster resident receives ‘Freedom of the Borough’ Award Local Doncaster resident Tony Sockett has been rewarded following his continuous work throughout the local community
Page 4
Issue 002 - March/April 2019 The Freedom of the Borough Award recognises positive work in the Doncaster community, and is the highest honour a local resident can receive. Tony Sockett, who served as Civic Mayor from 2007-2008, has worked in various different community-based roles before retiring in 1994. Despite his retirement, Tony is still actively involved in a number of local projects, telling the Doncaster Echo he has always enjoyed making things happen for others. “Most of my life I have worked with young people in a whole variety of ways. I have always enjoyed helping out others and making things happen for the community. “I am just a local kid that enjoys working with others I suppose, working in the community has been a way of life for me for a very long time. “Whether it be helping out with sport, youth groups, culture or whatever it may be, I am not too precious with anything like that! Being a member of society, when someone wants something doing, I have always been keen to volunteer.”
“We actually had the boat built back 35 years ago. The story is there was a pocket of money and one of my colleagues put a bid in for it, consequently we received £25,000 to build a boat from scratch. Over the next 18 months we had the boat constructed. Nominated for the award back in September by Mayor Ros Jones, Tony added he was both delighted and grateful that his achievements have been rewarded. The prestigious title is something that Mr Sockett was familiar with, even before collecting the accolade. Back in his time serving as Civic Mayor in 2007-08, he was able to pass the award on himself. “Of course, I am not someone that looks for accolades, but I was very grateful for the recognition and the award. Somebody must have been watching what I was doing! “Actually, when I served as civic mayor in 200708, I was able to pass on the award to a couple of others.”
Starting out as a PE teacher, other roles for Tony have included serving as a Youth Officer for the West Riding County Council, as it was known then, and being senior adviser for the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster. Following his retirement, Tony still remains actively involved in community work. He is the long-serving secretary for the Cooke Almshouse Charity and Chairman of the Adams Ark residential canal boat, and to this day he is keen to help out where possible. “I am still involved in various different community projects. The Adams Ark canal boat, was built a number of years ago, bringing the Thorne area off the unemployed register. This scheme aims to provide activities, either day cruising or weekend hire opportunities for young people with the group now encouraging older people to get involved.” Continuing on the Adams Ark canal boat scheme: Doncaster Echo is brought to you by CreateTVT. FROM A POLICE
Building relationships “Over the next few weeks our officers will be out and about, so if you see them please do stop for a chat. They want to hear your views.”
Page 8
Issue 002 - March/April 2019
E PERSPECTIVE: This month, Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley talks us through the important relationship between the community and officers In last month’s edition I talked about the priorities my team and I have for policing in Doncaster for 2019. Now I want to ask for your help. Our ambitious plans can only be achieved with the support of you, the Doncaster community. This is an exciting time to get involved with our teams who work in your area. Over the next 12 months we will have 84 new recruits, with 20 additional posts also being created in our Neighbourhood teams. We are all committed to doing our best for Doncaster and want to hear about the issues that really matter to local communities. We are currently developing tailored plans for each of our three neighbourhood areas and want to hear from you. What is happening where you live? What are the issues affecting your local community? Where do you want us to take action? If you have any concerns, we are always happy to hear them so we can help out in the most appropriate way possible. It is always important to hear back from the community, as after all, it is your home as well as ours. Over the next few weeks our officers will be out and about, so if you see them please do stop for a chat. They want to hear your views. If you would like to get involved in shaping your
local policing plan a great first step is to ‘like’ the neighbourhood policing team’s Facebook page for where you live – they regularly post updates. You can also sign up SYP alerts via www. sypalerts.co.uk . Finally, look out for drop-in sessions in supermarkets and shopping centres, online meetings, and other events you can go along to and have your say. These events are a great way to connect to your local police force, and ensure your point is heard by us. We will also be launching our new neighbourhood profiles very soon. They will show you the key issues we’re currently focussing on and what’s being done to tackle them. They will also show our top five priorities for your neighbourhood, and where and when you can meet us to have a chat about what you want to see. Importantly, there will also be pictures of your local officers so you can put a face to a name. We think having a connection between officers and members of the public is vital, so by knowing each one of our officers by face is something we look forward to introducing. Your team in Doncaster is ready and waiting for you to get in touch – they are as passionate about your community as you are, and together we can make a huge difference. We’re looking forward to hearing from you soon.

DONCASTER STORE EARNS NATIONAL AWARD A Doncaster-based shoe shop has picked up a prestigious award at the National Footwear Industry Awards, receiving recognition for ‘Shop Front of the Year’
The Shoe Room was a winner on the night in the Shop Front of the Year category, fending off high-class opposition including an impressive entry from a shop in Kensington, London. Speaking to Doncaster Echo, shop owners Richard and Michelle Smith admitted they didn’t know what to expect with their entry, but were overwhelmed with the result. “Of course we were thrilled to win, we had never entered anything like this before so we really didn’t know what to expect. Our category was strongly contested on the night, and was the only award that carried a prize.” Couple Richard and Michelle opened their new store in November 2017, although previously were business partners in another Doncaster shoe shop for 11 years. With over 11 years’ experience in English footwear
Page 10
retail, The Shoe Room has built up a long list of proud brand partners. Just some of these include iconic Australian brand RM Williams, Sanders and Sanders, Jeffery West, Viyella, Armor-Lux Clothing, as well as those they have worked with for many years including Loake, Barker, Tricker’s and Cheaney. Following their successful window entry at the awards this February, the couple were rewarded with a trophy, as well as other gifts. The store’s winning entry is pictured above. “On top of the award we also received £1500 worth of holiday vouchers, so we were thrilled with that.” In a recent Facebook post, Richard and Michelle thanked various partners that the company have worked with, suggesting their window display was a real team effort. Congratulations to The Shoe Room from everyone at Doncaster Echo.

Doncaster martial arts coach wins European gold A martial arts coach has picked up a prestigious European Championship Gold medal in Lisbon, despite not professionally competing for over 18 years Neil White initially planned on travelling to Portugal to support his son who was competing, but the 53-year-old came home with Gold in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu following his decision to participate in the European Championships. Page 12
With his son Chris, 22, also making a name for himself in the sport, Neil was keen to show his junior what he was capable of. He told Doncaster Echo a large reason for him re-entering after an 18-year absence was to ensure his son could see him compete in a competitive event.

“My Son Chris was competing in this year’s Championships out

out there to support him. “He had never really seen me compete, so I thought It would be a good time to give it a go and get back on the mats, and it all turned out well! I have also always said that I was going to happy to have done that as well.”
Issue 002 - March/April 2019
It was 2001 when Neil made his last competitive appearance, and he also won Gold in the European Championships in London. Now 18 years on, he remains in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but confesses he is not what he once used to be. “I always loved competing, I have ever since I was a youngster, but obviously now I am not in my peak physical condition. Currently, I am probably as good as I can be for my age, but I am certainly not going to get any better. “I think that will be it for competing, I have had a great run and enjoyed it, but I cannot see myself ever going back ever again.” Back home, Neil runs a Martial Arts club open to all ages and abilities, doing his bit for the local community. Following the inevitable closure of the venue 12 years ago, Neil bought the centre. “My hobby turned into my job 12 years ago. I decided to buy the centre as It was going to close down. Since then I have dedicated a lot of time into martial arts and coaching.” If you are looking for more information on Doncaster Martial Arts Centre, visit the website doncastermartialartscentre.co.uk or our Facebook page ‘Doncaster Martial Arts Centre.’ Doncaster Echo is brought to you by CreateTVT. Fitness expert Naomi Silvester from Strong 21 talks us through the benefits of regular exercise, and the best way to burn the calories ready for summer
Summer shred With the sun making a small but pleasant appearance recently, motivation for that summer body has been triggered. It goes without saying everyone wants the desirable low fat shredded look, however, it is no secret that achieving this is difficult. Here I will tell you the most effective way of getting into shape, and ensure you are burning those calories as quick as possible. To drop that excess weight and tone up healthily and effectively all comes down to our energy balance; calories in vs calories out. Calories are the units of energy that fuel our bodies and we get them from what we eat and drink. Men and women need around 20003000 calories each day but far too often, people reduce calories too low, restricting essential nutrients and resulting in unhealthy yo-yo dieting. The most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is to move more!
Page 14
Any exercise that raises your heart rate and demands more from your muscles will burn calories, improve the metabolism, reduces the risk of disease and is the most underused antidepressant going! NHS guidelines advise at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise a week. Combine this with a 300-500 calorie a day reduction of sugary, processed food to help drop those pounds! My favourite, fat-busting exercise is the simple, body-weighted squat. Squats activate the lower body and biggest muscle groups the glutes, quadriceps and hamstrings. The more active these muscles, the more blood and oxygen is required and the more you burn. Try the Strong21 squat challenge - 30 squats a day for 30 days - and be sure to see the results in a matter of time, as well as feeling the burn! For more information visit www.strong21training.com

We have teamed up with Taylor Bracewell Solicitors to bring you the best legal tips and advice How expensive is a solicitor? Do they work hourly, or for a fixed fee? Do they charge when I first go in? I don’t think I can afford to have any advice. We would always recommend that you call our solicitors for an initial chat about your problem, we may be able to assist on the telephone at no cost. The costs of instructing a solicitor can depend on many things such as the area of law, and the experience of the solicitor. Solicitors work for fixed fees and on an hourly rate basis. Again, this will depend on the nature of the legal work. Conveyancing transactions, wills and some family work can be on a fixed-fee basis. I am a single father-of-one. He is 10. I am on the birth certificate, does this give me parental responsibility automatically? My son doesn’t live with me full time, I pay my maintenance and he stays over often. As long as you are named on your son’s birth certificate, you will automatically have parental responsibility for your son. You will have shared rights and responsibilities with the mother of your son. I am wanting to divorce my ex-partner, we haven’t been together for nearly a year now. It was an amicable split, and no real reason other than we fell out of love. I was told by a family friend I had to wait two years minimum before I can divorce him. Is this correct? You would be able to initiate a divorce on the basis of two years separation assuming your ex-partner consents to the divorce and fully co-operates. In
Page 16
order to issue before this time you would have to assert that your partner had behaved in such a way that you couldn’t reasonably be expected to live with him (unreasonable behaviour) or that he had committed adultery. My previous employer dismissed me whilst I was on leave for a broken wrist. I was due to sign my contract the week after the wrist injury but they told me I couldn’t sign whilst off and then dismissed me. They said I had too long off work. Is this wrongful dismissal? An employee can be fairly dismissed even when they are absent from work due to illness or injury. However, much will depend upon how long you were employed for. Employees with less than two years’ continuous service do not have the right to bring an unfair dismissal claim. There are exceptions to that rule where an employee is dismissed for whistleblowing, health and safety reasons or similar but that doesn’t seem to apply in your case. However, unless an employee is dismissed for gross misconduct, an employer must dismiss with notice. Keep your questions coming - Doncaster Echo and Taylor Bracewell want to help you get the answers you need! All you need to do is send us your questions and the experts will do their best to put your mind at ease. Email your questions to info@createtvt.co.uk and we will then send them over to Taylor Bracewell and your answers will be published in the next edition of Doncaster Echo and on our website at www.doncasterecho.co.uk
Issue 002 - March/April 2019
Taylor Bracewell solicitors now offer free drop-in clinics for anyone with queries about employment law. If you are having problems at work or you have recently been dismissed then you are welcome to come to one of our dropins to discuss your problem. Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills answers some important questions regarding marriage legalities
WHAT RIGHTS DO WE HAVE IF WE ARE NOT MARRIED I’m not married to my partner, what are the implications? With only 50% (roughly) of UK adults identifying as being married in 2016 this brings up some complexities when one partner dies without a will. Statistics tell us that 70% of the UK population over the age of 18 do not have a valid will in place. One of the most vulnerable groups not having a will are those who are not married to their partner. Common law marriage Many people I speak to believe that if they have been together or living together for a certain length of time then they will get the same protections and automatic inheritances as those who are married. This thinking is often referred to as a common law marriage. This is untrue. In the UK there is no such thing as a common law marriage.
Page 18
But we have children together’ The next question I am normally asked is ‘but we have children together, surely that changes things? Again, no it makes no difference. Your children will inherit your partner’s estate, this will also include children from previous relationships. What can we do? The easiest way to solve all the above issues it to put a valid will into place. This can be done for as little as £99 and be completed within three days if necessary. We can also process wills over the phone as well as in person. For more information please contact Katherine on 01427 809919. Keep a look out for more content from Katherine in our May/June Doncaster Echo edition

Success for local cricket club’s impressive community work Hatfield Town has continued its efforts to try and provide the best opportunities for young people in the Doncaster area
Hatfield Town is proudly trying to reverse the growing trend of decreasing membership levels in youth cricket by investing money raised into local projects. The club runs as a charity and are reliant on willing volunteers, all pulling in the same direction in an attempt to get youngsters back involved in Club Cricket. Speaking to Doncaster Echo, Secretary Martin Winstandley told us the club was proud to be investing in local club projects to ensure the organisation can continue. “Every penny we raise is invested back into club projects. Like many other local ‘village’ cricket clubs we were faced with the challenges of attracting new players and being able to continue
as a club without any junior teams. But instead of folding, like many others, the club decided it would not lie down. “The club now hosts Friday Family Evenings with qualified junior coaching provided free of charge and affordable food and refreshments provided for the rest of the family.” Following the efforts of the club, the results have been positive. Hatfield CC can now boast junior teams at under 9, 11 and 13 levels, with Under 15’s coming in 2020. Also the club has formed a Women’s Softball Team, and will be looking to increase the number of girls playing the sport. The Progress - means the club is now looking to improve facilities by adding a new pavilion and changing rooms.
