Heptonstalls Ltd Solicitors in Goole. Shaun, who has lived and worked locally for almost 30 years, is also a founder member of the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards and well known locally for his business achievements, as well as his community and charity work. Shaun told Our Goole: “It came as an enormous shock to me and I feel extremely honoured to have been given this award. “Working alongside others, I will continue to do all I can to assist with the many improvements and developments taking place in Goole and the surrounding area.” Now in its ninth year, the annual awards ceremony was, once again, compered by the BBC’s Harry Gration, MBE. More than 300 guests enjoyed a three-course meal and entertainment from stand-up comedian Jed Stone before the presentation of the awards. Chairman of the Goole & Howdenshire Business
Excellence Awards Committee Garrey Haase said: “We had a really high number of entries again this year, as well as a fantastic turn out for the awards evening itself. It was particularly pleasing to see a number of local businesses and organisations entering for the first time. Our finalists and winners came from across the Goole and Howdenshire area, and from a broad range of sectors, which really demonstrates the diversity and strength of the business community locally. “Well done to everyone who was shortlisted which is no mean feat when you consider that our judges had to wade their way through more than 70 entries – and huge congratulations to our winners! I’d like to thank our independent judging panel and our generous sponsors, as well as the committee members who give up so much of their own time to organise and promote the awards. They work so hard to stage a wonderful awards evening each year.”

FROM A POLICE Operation Sceptre This month, Sgt David Lonsdale speaks to us about knife crime, and the dangers of carrying a BB gun in public
“If you carry a BB gun in a public place, you are potentially risking your life
Page 10
Issue 038-March 2019

E PERSPECTIVE: Goole Police Station, alongside other stations nationally, will be running Operation Sceptre from 11-17th March. This is a national knife crime campaign which aims to reduce the number of people, especially young people, carrying a weapon. Sergeant Lonsdale said: “We are pleased to give our support to this national initiative. A knife bin will be located at Goole Police Station for members of the public to hand over knives safely and anonymously. We receive intelligence relating to people carrying weapons in public. This is totally unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. Officers will search anyone for such items when they have reasonable grounds for suspicion. Anyone found with weapons, knives or sharply pointed objects are likely to be arrested and prosecuted, unless they have a lawful reason for the possession.” We have also received reports and have found evidence relating to youths carrying BB guns in public places. This has been a particular problem in the shopping precinct area of Goole. This should not be done and is unlawful. We are urging parents to be aware and advise children to stop this and not let their child leave the house with any such items which resemble a firearm.
Although it is not illegal to own a BB gun it does come with strict conditions. These are: • You must be 18 years old or over and be a member of a soft-air club to buy and possess a realistic BB gun. •
If you are not a member of a soft-air club, but are still over 18 years old, you can only purchase a non-realistic BB gun, which will be manufactured in an obscure colour (pink, yellow etc).
• If you are under 18 years old, you can only possess a BB gun on private land. A BB gun is considered to be an imitation firearm, which is anything which has the appearance of being a firearm, whether or not it is capable of discharging any shot, bullet or missile. It is illegal to carry an imitation firearm in public and the consequences could be very serious. If you carry a BB gun in a public place, you are potentially risking your life if someone sees it and calls the police. There is a real risk of you being shot by armed response officers who are unable to establish the exact nature of the weapon. Humberside Police saw a total of 418 offences of possession of offensive weapons between December 2017- December 2018.

LOCAL GOOLE GROUP TAKES TO THE STAGE Members of a local music theatre group, which aims to provide opportunities for those with learning and physical disabilities has taken its talents to the big stage! The Castaway Goole group recently took part in the ‘Let’s Rock’ event, marking their third year at the Bridlington festival. The event is a unique opportunity for young talent to be heard and groups who often work in isolation to encourage each other.
at Bridlington Spa for three years in a row now, it is something members of the group massively look forward to each year. The group writes a new piece of original music for the event.”
The group’s mission is to empower both young people and adults with learning and physical disabilities. There is also a large emphasis on transforming the lives of the members by ‘believing in the power of music theatre.’
“One of our members, Ellie, had seen young people do solo sets in previous years and felt ready to perform two of her own songs on her own this year.”
Funded through Youth Music, the group runs weekly sessions for 10-25 year olds led by professional musicians. It is a great opportunity for young people to excel as performers and composers, with anyone able to join. Team leader Tom Hill told Our Goole “The annual event is something the members of the Castaway Sloop Group look forward to each year. “The Group has been part of the Let’s Rock event Page 16
Some 11 members performed this year representing the Castaway Group, with one member bravely performing a solo.
Castaway is keen to empower those with learning/physical disabilities, with regular members speaking highly of the group. “It has helped us as a team and brought friendship together and my confidence has built thanks to Castaway Sloop.” “It was great because performing on stage is a big thing to do. I was nervous but enjoyed it. It’s made me a lot more confident stepping up to do a song on my own.”

Goole Easter Egg drop announced
Issue 038-March 2019
Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers
This Easter, Our Goole are teaming up with the Credit Union and Morrisons to launch our very first Easter Egg drop, taking place at Morrisons, Goole After the success of our Christmas Toy Appeal, and with more and more families feeling the pinch after the Christmas season, we want to spread some Easter cheer to families in our local community. The Easter Egg drop-off points will be at Morrisons on Boothferry Road and the Credit Union office on Pasture Road. We are hoping that shoppers and the community as a whole will once again pull together and donate an Easter Egg at either of these drop-off points. Lisa Warrener, director of Our Goole, said “It was great to see the community pull together in the way it did for the Christmas toy appeal, so we would love to see similar for our Easter project. It is a great time of year for young kids, so we are keen to help as much as possible.” There will also be an Easter promotion in store, with a special guest appearance from the Credit Union’s mascot Penny the Penguin. There will be colouring competitions and chocolate for the children and £10 deposit vouchers available for anyone wanting to open a Christmas Saver account.
of Goole will come together to support this worthy cause. Jo Evans from the Credit Union told Our Goole: “We are very excited to be working with Morrisons and Our Goole again for this fabulous project. It was clear from the feedback from the community that they want to give a helping hand to those who are struggling in these difficult times. “We are seeing that families are still feeling the pinch after Christmas and with the rollout of the Universal Credit, so as a community business we want to do what we can to show our support. The response from those receiving gifts from the Toy Appeal was truly overwhelming, the relief and appreciation was clear to see”. The drop-off points for the Easter eggs: The Credit Union, Pasture Road Morrisons, Boothferry Road

UK’s oldest hotel in Goole up for sale Local Goole couple Julie and Howard Duckworth have confirmed that the Lowther Hotel, recognised as the oldest in the country, is now up for sale
The Grade II* hotel was the first landmark built in Goole, and has been under the ownership of Julie and Howard since 2008. Over the last 11 years, they have renovated the hotel back to its former glory, following a large restoration job.
and ‘The Drake’, a neighbouring pub, up for £395,000.
Due to personal reasons the couple have decided to put the hotel up for sale for £995,000,
“Of course I will miss it, but sometimes you think to yourself, things have to change.”
Page 20
Speaking to Our Goole, Howard suggested he will miss the rich history of the Lowther, and told us about the long process of getting the hotel into its current impressive condition.

“When we bought the hotel back in 2008, I will be honest, it was a bigger restoration job than I first thought. It was totally derelict, we had all sorts of problems with rot and Artex, the place did not have any windows or floors.” The Hotel, built in 1824, was officially listed up for sale in December, offering the opportunity for new buyers to take responsibility of the historic building. With the Lowther being the oldest hotel in the UK, Julie and Howard can boast a blue plaque commemorating this achievement.
marketing artwork in the world. We also found some of the oldest murals on the first floor which used to be the board room for the Aire and Calder navigation, painted between 1827 and 1830. There must have been about 60 foot of them!”
Among the fascinating history of the building, Howard and Julie also discovered a number of rare items, one of which being the original Minton tiled floors as you came into the hotel.
Howard also spoke to us about the exciting times ahead for the town of Goole.
“When we first had a look in the place, we were surprised to find what is believed to be the oldest
“You could say it is the wrong time to sell, as in two years’ time it could be worth 50% more than it is now. With Siemens and Drax coming in, Goole is on its way up, and fast.

This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green discusses how important waste management is for your business
Environmentally friendly? Think sustainable materials Waste management is the precise name for the collection, transportation, disposal or recycling and monitoring of waste. As part of the supply chain, businesses have not just a legal, but an ethical responsibility to reduce waste. From a business point of view it makes sense as it can reduce your costs and is also a great opportunity for positive PR. Customers like to work with businesses who have a conscience. Things you need to consider:
1. Recycling – how are you managing waste paper, batteries, toner cartridges and hardware? 2. Are your suppliers operating ethically? 3. If you have a food outlet are you composting leftover produce? 4. Do you save documents electronically as opposed to printing? 5. Reusable containers for drinks. 6. Materials – can offcuts be used for something different? 7. How do you package your products, be size efficient.

The costs to consider when buying a house When you buy a new home, there are some upfront fees to think about in addition to your mortgage costs which need to be considered. Stamp duty is one of the main upfront costs, if the purchase price of the house is more than £125,000. However, there are now some exemptions for first-time buyers. There will be a valuation fee to pay and your mortgage lender will assess the value of the property to establish how much they are prepared to lend you and the cost could be up to £1,500, although some lenders might not charge you for this. Surveys can range from a basic home survey costing around £250 to a full structural survey from £600 or more. A solicitor or licensed conveyor is needed to carry out all the legal work. Legal fees typically start at around £450, but depend on the price of the property. Once your mortgage is agreed you will need to have the money for the sale transferred, which will incur an electronic transfer fee, typically about £30. If you are looking to buy or sell a house and would like further advice, call Heptonstalls on 0800 9178267 or visit www.heptonstalls.co.uk

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc speaks to us about Brexit’s relationship with the housing market
So how will Brexit affect my property? The majority of housing market reports for 2018 state that prices are fairly flat and London and the South East are not performing as well as other regions. Will this continue throughout the year? Brexit is very much on homeowners’ minds when it comes to whether to move now or wait. In the first quarter of 2019, the run-up to Divorce Day on 29th March, there will continue to be people who have to sell. Death, debt and divorce won’t pause for Brexit, but how many people ‘must’ buy? The ones who’ll be confident of buying may demand something for the risk they may perceive
Page 24
they’re taking, which in most cases could be a discount on the price of up to 10%. Prices are expected to fall back nationally, with London and the South East bearing the brunt. According to some forecasters, Brexit is the major obstacle we need to overcome in 2019, however, it’s far too easy to blame Brexit for the current lack of activity. The market has been underpinned by historically low mortgage rates, lack of stock and Help-to-Buy in what has become a fragile, needs-driven buyers’ market, which is unlikely to change into early 2019 – irrespective of Brexit.

Property expert Phil Jones from Link Agency talks us through the legalities of ending a residential tenancy
Thinking of ending your tenancy?
When deciding to end a residential tenancy you should first read through the tenancy agreement that you signed at the outset. This will clarify what you need to do to bring the tenancy to an end. The tenancy agreement will almost certainly require that you give notice to your landlord in writing. Once you have sent this, it is worth checking that it has been received. Giving notice does not in itself mean that the
tenancy will end, you must also surrender the tenancy by handing the keys back on time. If you fail to do so the tenancy has not ended and you can be asked to pay rent for the extension period. Once the keys have been returned the property will be inspected and you may be charged for removal of any items you have left behind. It is therefore wise to ensure that the property is clear of your possessions and is ready to hand over before surrendering.

Following joint funding from NHS England, 4 Mental Health has launched its new ‘Staying Safe’ website, equipped with expert help and advice for those struggling with mental health issues
‘Staying Safe’ website launched
4 Mental Health has launched its ‘Staying Safe’ website, offering vital resources for anyone distressed, thinking about suicide or worried about someone they care about. The Staying Safe website is a potentially life-saving resource developed by 4 Mental Health, with invaluable input from international academics, mental health practitioners, people who have survived suicidal thoughts and those personally affected by suicide through bereavement. StayingSafe.net offers compassion, kindness and easy ways to help keep people safer from thoughts of harm and suicide, seek support and discover hope of recovery through powerful videos from people with personal experience. Page 34
The website provides vital ‘Safety Plan’ guidance tools jointly funded by NHS England, with easy to print online templates and guidance video tutorials purposefully designed to help people through the process of writing their own Safety Plan. A Safety Plan helps to build hope, identify actions and strategies to resist suicidal thoughts and develop positive ways to cope with stress and emotional distress. Tragically, suicide takes far too many lives, yet it is preventable. Anyone struggling to cope or experiencing deep distress may begin to think about harming themselves and consider suicide as a means to escape their emotional pain. It can be incredibly difficult to think clearly during these times. Everyone is encouraged to prepare
for possible difficult times ahead before they happen by completing a Safety Plan.
During times of deep distress, Safety Plans become a vital and valuable reminder of: • What people can do for themselves to get through difficult times • Practical ways they can make their situation safer • Who to contact for support • Where to go or who to contact in an emergency It is 4 Mental Health’s hope that anyone currently in extreme distress can share our hope that recovery is possible with the right support. For more information about StayingSafe. net, please contact info@4mentalhealth.com or call 0203 637 9191.

Vinny the Viking Meet Goole AFC’s new mascot making a big impression
Owner of Vinny and Goole Fan, Annie Broadhead, told Our Goole he loves watching every move of the game. “Everyone loves him, he always greets fans when he sees them at games and he will always sit and watch through the gate, following every move. “He is named after Vin Diesel and with the club known as the Vikings, I fell in love with the name Vinny the Viking.”
Goole AFC has found itself a brand new club mascot, and he is proving to be a big hit with fans and players alike. Unlike most other clubs who commonly deploy costumed mascots, Goole AFC has opted for match day regular Vinny the dog to step into the role. Page 38
‘Vinny the Viking’ has been going to watch the matches ever since Christmas, and has now been gifted the club mascot title by Vice Chairman Jack Ewing. At just 15 weeks old, Vinny is well received by fans and greets them when they come through the turnstiles at Victoria Pleasure Grounds.
Goole will certainly be hoping Vinny can act as a good luck charm for the remainder of its First Division campaign.
