Charity football ma memory of five soldiers The event, which takes place on May 2nd at Doncaster’s Keepmoat Stadium, will see Trupart Automotive, a team of ex-military personnel, take on Sands United FC, a Doncaster-based charity football team fielding players who have lost a child either through miscarriage, still birth or neo-natal death Trupart Automotive are representing five soldiers who were all killed in Nad-e-Ali in the Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in 2009. The five soldiers who lost their lives were Warrant Officer Class 1 Darren Chant, 40, Sergeant Matthew Telford, 37, and Guardsman Jimmy Major, 18, from the Grenadier Guards, Corporal Steven Boote, 22, and Corporal Nicholas WebsterSmith, 24, from the Royal Military Police. Ryan Chant, Darren’s brother, is responsible for setting the game up. Ryan told Doncaster Echo: “We really want to fill

the Keepmoat Stadium with as many supporters as possible. It’s going to be a great day.” We also spoke to John Durry, who set up Sands United FC Doncaster: “Being a Doncaster Rovers fan, and having the chance to step out at the Keepmoat for the team, I’ve put together in my son’s memory are what dreams are made of. I’ll never get to experience taking my son Arthur to his first Rovers game, but stepping over the white line with his name under my badge is something I’ll always treasure. “Whilst all monies raised from the game will go towards the two charities, The Army Benevolent Fund, and us, Sands United FC Doncaster, the

If playing this one game finds just one more bloke suffering from the loss of a child, and points them in our direction to give them that vital support needed after such heartbreak, that is a win for me regardless of the score or money raised.”
The gates for the game open at 2:30pm and kick off is at 3.30pm. This is guaranteed to be an event not to miss and it’s perfect if you are looking for a fun-filled family day out. Prices are £5 for adults and £2 for under 16s. A family ticket, which admits two adults and two under 16s, is also available, priced at £10. For tickets, please get in touch with 07956152424

FROM A POLICE
Police station re-op This month Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley, District Commander for Doncaster, talks to us about the police station that has re-opened in Edlington and what this means for the community
“With a policing team at the centre of Edlington village, we can continue to build on the work we have already started. We’ve chosen Edlington as the first area to benefit from its own community team because of the policing need there, particularly in terms of antisocial behaviour issues.”
Page 8
Issue 008 - April/May 2020
E PERSPECTIVE:
pened in Edlington Edlington’s police station re-opened on Monday 24 February as South Yorkshire Police continues to honour its pledge to boost neighbourhood policing in our communities. While there has always been a police presence across the borough, Edlington hasn’t had its own station for several years. Having listened to the community’s concerns about the area, Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley has now committed additional resources to ensure a visible and dedicated police presence for Edlington. He explains: “Neighbourhood policing is a key part of our long-term strategy for Doncaster, and across South Yorkshire. Now that I have access to additional resources for the borough it’s right that they are re-invested into the areas that need it the most. “With a policing team at the centre of Edlington village, we can continue to build on the work we have already started. We’ve chosen Edlington as the first area to benefit from its own community team because of the policing need there, particularly in terms of antisocial behaviour issues. “A team of one Sergeant, four PCs and four PCSOs will work from the station and have already spent a lot of time in the local area getting to know the
community and understanding the issues that are important to them.” Sergeant Liam Watson who heads up the Edlington team said: “I see the presence of my team as the first step in a long-term strategy for Edlington. We are here to work with the community and partners to develop a positive relationship that will help us address the issues that are most important to residents. “We can’t do this alone, and my message to anyone who has concerns is please get in touch. Let us know what’s happening, and what matters to you. We will have a much greater impact if the community works alongside us. If you don’t want to speak to officers directly drop in and see the team at the Eco Centre, they will be more than happy to pass your concerns on to us.” Nick Fletcher, MP for Don Valley, said: “This is a positive step for the community of Edlington. The police force across Doncaster do a fantastic job and this station will enable them to continue fighting crime and keeping the public safe.” Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “I am delighted to see neighbourhood policing, in partnership with DMBC staff, back in Edlington. I am sure that over a period of time, we will see more neighbourhood hubs within other communities.”

DRAGON BOAT CHALLENGE RETURNS FOR ITS 11TH YEAR The Visit Doncaster and Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s Dragon Boat Challenge will take place on 4th July 2020 at Lakeside, Doncaster Now in its 11th year, Dragon Boat Racing caters for all adult ages in one crew, male and female, mixed abilities and people with disabilities. It requires no previous experience and above all is great fun, consisting of 10 paddlers and one drummer competing in 30ft Dragon boats. Each team has to complete a minimum of three races over a 250m course with the fastest timed nine teams going through to the semi-final races. The three fastest qualifying then battle it out in the final race to be crowned the Dragon Boat Challenge Champions of 2020. Competitors will have to be fierce to take the crown off last year’s winners, Rampton (Hospital) Raiders who won the title. The winners will receive a trophy along with winners’ medals, and free entry to next year’s event, with the second and third teams also receiving medals. As in the previous two years there will also be an “All-Female” final, subject to teams entering. As part of the day’s events there will also be a fun fair, craft and charity stalls as well as a range of food and drink, making for a fun and entertaining
Page 12
day for competitors and spectators, and it’s free. The fee for a team to enter is £350 with each team member agreeing to raise a minimum of £30. All the money raised will be passed to The Rotary Club of Doncaster St Georges, of which 70% will be returned to the Team Captain for presentation to your chosen charity. If you are not able to raise the required amount of team members you can have a joint team with another company with up to 15 team members per team used in rotation throughout the day. Commenting on the Challenge, John Day from The Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s said: “We are all really looking forward to this year’s event which should be a great day with lots of fun, music and entertainment. We hope to raise as much money as we can for the Team’s chosen charities and for the worthy causes supported by the Rotary Club. Over the last 10 years, this event has raised over £127,000.” For more information visit www.visitdoncaster. com/whats-on/dragon-boat-race-2020

DONCASTER IS GETTING ITS VERY OWN MONOPOLY BOARD It has been announced that the town will finally be getting its own version of the official Monopoly game, released in time for Christmas Board games seem a thing of the past nowadays with youngsters having the latest technologies to entertain themselves. However, Monopoly has always been a great game that brings young and older generations together for unique family time. And now you will now be able to enjoy the classic board game with the whole family - but the landmarks will be a lot closer to home.
Winning Moves UK, who make the game under licence from Hasbro, said: “We are delighted that the Monopoly dice for this year shall be rolling on Doncaster. It has beaten 24 other great North East places in an exciting contest. We very nearly had to roll the dice between Ripon and Doncaster it was so close - but Doncaster just won. We studied 25 cities and towns. Congratulations to the town. We discovered it has lots of hidden treasures – absolutely essential as we need around 30 leading landmarks to fill the board.”
Iconic Doncaster landmarks such as the racecourse, football stadium and Mansion are set to replace the London Monopoly classic streets like Mayfair and Park Lane.
A Facebook page ‘Doncaster Monopoly’ has been set up where people can comment which Doncaster Landmarks they would like to see feature on the new board game.

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how over 60% of the UK population do not have a will in place
HAVE YOU MADE A WILL? For most people, creating a will is something you don’t want to think about. However, it can be useful to consider creatingone as without one it can make it more difficult to distribute your estate. There is some good news that the percentage of over 55s has reduced to just over a third who do not have one. The main reason given is that they plan to make a will in later life which is also true for the younger age groups as well. For younger age groups with children under 18 this is a big concern for me as they have no legal guardianship in place, meaning that their is no legal paperwork to determine who should look after the children in the event that both parents pass away. Without this guardianship it will be the courts and
Page 18
social services who make the decisions. Additionally, with the rise of unmarried couples living together (no automatic inheritance) and blended families, there is a significant risk that loved ones could be unintentionally disinherited. Or that assets may pass to a current spouse (if not yet divorced) or previous spouse if any existing wills have not been updated. Divorce does not invalidate any wills that have been previously made. Overall, creating a will will allow you to take the pressure off your family as your wishes will be laid out in a clear fashion for them to follow. If any of these situations seem familiar to you please get in touch via the details listed below in the advertisement.

TRUSTED MENTOR SCHEME CELEBRATES TURNING ONE The Trusted Mentor team is celebrating its first year of service helping children and young people across Doncaster Launching in January 2019, the service, funded by the Department for Education’s Doncaster Opportunity Area Programme, has enlisted volunteer mentors who are supporting young people from across the borough to discover their potential and take the important first steps towards realising their dreams. The service is hoping to help more young people and has set the target of supporting 300 young people by July 2020. So what is it really like to volunteer for the Trusted Mentors? One volunteer comments: “It’s really heart-warming, I mentor two boys and when I see them taking part in fun activities that they’ve never tried before I feel quite emotional. I love being a mentor.”
Page 22
One young person who is taking part in the project said: “My mentor is amazing, he helps me with my troubles and we do fun things because we share all the same interests.” Project Manager of the scheme, Cheryl Blackett, said: ‘We’ve had a brilliant year running our mentoring scheme and can see it is already making a difference to the lives of the young people we are supporting in Doncaster. We have already had so many great volunteers join us on our journey so far, and can’t wait to recruit some more to help support our children and young people.” If you would like to become a Trusted Mentor or to find out more about the scheme visit www. doncasterchildrenstrust.co.uk/volunteering/ trusted-mentors
