Keeping your ch online this summ With summer well under way, our children are all facing a lengthy period of time out of their usual school environment, giving some of them more time to be able to browse the internet. A lot of parents may not know how safe their children are online, making the work of the Doncaster child exploitation team even more relevant across the summer months This multi-agency team comprises of: health, police, social care and education, who work with children and young people up to 18 years of age. One of the helpful team members includes specialist nurse Jayne Pezzulo, whose role is to address health needs of young people referred into the team. As part of the team they also deliver education awareness sessions regarding exploitation in schools, communities, and to professionals. With summer in full flow, the team have got together some key tips to ensure your child is as safe as possible online. Speaking to the Doncaster Echo, Jayne and the team provided the following information. “To minimise headaches for parents, it is important to ensure your children have a

balanced lifestyle and do not have over exposure to devices. Our first tip is to have a digital dusk, do not allow your child to use devices in the hour before bedtime. Tip two, make sure they are maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Do not let your children become addicted to their devices and limit snacking while using them. “Tip three, tech-free meal times. Ensure that devices do not hinder family time and social occasions, and finally tip four, why not consider making home tech rules? For example, set time limits for the use of devices and technology. “Parents need to be aware of what online sites and apps their children are using, along with the age restrictions for what they are accessing. Children can easily be groomed online by people who pretend they are safe, and can start to have

conversations that can then lead to the young person being asked to send indecent images online and/or engage in sexual conversations. “Children can be targeted through online gaming, social network sites and mobile phones to name a few. It is important that parents monitor their child’s online activity and that privacy settings are in place.” As part of the Digital Economies Bill (2017), on 15th July 2019, age verification launches, to safeguard children from accessing adult material online and enhance parental supervision. This launch aims to protect young children from online threats and exploitation. Jayne has also provided some further information as to how parents can keep their children safer online.
Issue 004 - August/September 2019
“It is important for children and young people to have a balance between active lifestyles and screen time; there is a link between obesity and technology. It is important that screen time does not interfere with family time and meeting up with friends. Excessive online use can isolate children from other activities.” Check out these sites over the summer: www.parentinfo.org, www.paceuk.info, www.nspcc.org.uk, www.ceop.gov.uk, www.net-aware.org.uk, www.childnet-int.org, www.thinkuknow.co.uk How to report a concern if you are worried about your child online ring 999. FROM A POLICE Tackling key issues South Yorkshire Police address how the force is tackling the issues that matter most to you

organisations for Operation Duxford – a day of action in the central area to address some key issues.
One of these saw children from Sandringham Primary School in Intake out on speed patrol with the help of one of our community safety volunteers. The youngsters did a walk around the school to look at parking issues, before doing speed checks along Sandringham Road. Over 40 cars were checked in total, with two found to be going over the 20mph limit.
As a result of this we made nine arrests, issued four cautions for possession of cannabis following stop and searches and executed two drugs warrants. On the roads, one quad bike was seized and 12 tickets handed out for various driving offences.
In another speed patrol, two teams of children from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School checked 120 cars, with 14 found to be in excess of the limit. We want to thank the schools and all of the pupils for getting involved. These speed patrols are a really effective way to educate drivers about the devastating impact that excessive speed can have. We will continue these patrols in ‘hot spot’ areas, in addition to parking patrols and work to tackle the antisocial use of off-road motorbikes. We also spent a day working with partner
We know that burglary remains a big concern across the area, and it remains a key priority for us. In the last two weeks officers from Doncaster have arrested 10 people on suspicion of commercial burglary and nine for residential burglary. Additional evening patrols are also in place to tackle the rise in commercial burglary. We are always keen to hear from you. We want to know what we are doing well and what you think we should be focussing on. There are drop-in events around the district every month, as well as online. LOCAL HOSPITALS APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEER PIANISTS! Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals are searching for talented local musicians to help provide a calming atmosphere throughout their sites The hospitals (DBTH) are appealing for local musicians as keyboards are set to be installed within the main entrances of the Trust’s three hospital sites. Three electronic baby grand pianos will soon take centre stage at Bassetlaw Hospital, Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital. With skilled musicians playing at intervals, it is hoped that the music will provide a calming and cultured atmosphere to the hospitals, reducing anxiety for arriving patients and visitors as well as improving the patient experience. The Trust is looking for musicians with Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grade Seven in Piano or an equivalent to volunteer their time to play. Father and son c UK’s biggest pea Please mention Doncaster Echo when calling advertisers
A father and son from Doncaster have completed their mission to climb the three biggest peaks in the UK, in an attempt to raise money for the Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust Chris and Cory Fletcher recently reached the top of Ben Nevis in the final climb, completing their goal of conquering the UK’s three biggest peaks over a one-year period. It was 11-year-old Cory who came up with the idea to climb the peaks with his dad, in an effort which has raised nearly £1,200. DCDT (Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust) works tirelessly around the clock, helping to fund equipment and facilities to prevent, detect, treat and cure cancer. A charity that is close to the families’ heart, Cory was keen to help out however he could.
Page 12
Speaking to Cory’s mum Victoria who works for DCDT, she told us it is not the first time he has gone the extra mile to raise money.
“After taking part in recent charity events at the hospital, Cory thought it would be nice to complete the climbing challenge for DCDT. It was all his idea, and Chris agreed to take part with it being for a wonderful cause.
“He has received brilliant support from his school as well, he goes to Dunsdale Primary and they have sponsored him so we are really appreciative of that. He will be sure to take some photos in now he has completed the climb” Prior to Chris and Cory’s final climb, the family were aiming to raise £500 to go towards the charity. However, following the kind donations of friends and family the pair have raised over £1,200, with that figure set to rise! Victoria told us she was delighted with the donations

which will go a long way in helping DCDT, and also talked us through the build up for the big climb. “At the moment we have not got the final figure, however I think he will have raised over £1,200. “The initial target for us was around £500, so to surpass it by such a margin is fantastic! We have received sponsorships from Cory’s school, friends and family so we would like to thank everyone. “Chris and Cory both found it tough, we were watching the weather a week before they actually took part in the climb as it was not looking like great climbing conditions. We have a caravan in the Dales, so they were both training beforehand doing various walks. Chris actually climbs quite a lot, but he has never done Ben Nevis, so it was a first for both Chris and Cory!” From everyone at Doncaster Echo, we would like to congratulate the pair for their superb efforts!

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks us through what happens to our social media accounts once we cannot control them any more
What happens to my social media when I die? As the world changes and the way that we communicate with each other evolves, it is inevitable that we will need to make some changes to the way we write wills. A key area that needs updating is how our social media accounts are dealt with, some of the online platforms allow you to make these choices whilst you are alive: 1. Facebook, the biggest and most popular social media platform, this has an option in your settings called memorialisation settings. In here you can appoint a Facebook friend who can look after your account after you pass. You can also give them permission to download photos from your profile, especially important for those who have family photos stored here . Another option is to request for your profile to be closed on death. If you make no choices, Facebook will work with your executors.
Page 14
2. Instagram, owned by Facebook, has broadly similar policies. The main difference is that you cannot put in place any wishes on the Instagram platform whilst you are alive, your executors are responsible for making the decisions. It may be advisable to put a line in your will with your wishes or to write an expression of wishes. 3. Twitter will close your account on request of the executors. 4. YouTube -you can appoint an inactive account manager via your settings who can then manage the account. Alternatively, your executors can contact youTube to have the account closed. We recommend that you put a clause in your will that executors can deal with your online assets including social media. These may require different executors to your normal ones and this is easy to include.

Our friends at Taylor Bracewell are back again answering all your legal questions that you have sent in. If you have any legal enquiries or concerns, be sure to email us at sales@createtvt.co.uk to receive expert help free of charge My holiday provider cancelled our flights one hour before departure, refused to put us up in a hotel overnight and actually charged us extra to fly the next day! Is this legal? To be able to advise you we would need specific details, however we can confirm some general guidance. If your flight was to leave the UK, you may be entitled to assistance or compensation. Depending upon the distance that you were to travel and the length of the delay there may be an obligation on the airline to provide you with food and drink, accommodation (if delayed overnight) and travel to that accommodation and assistance with phone calls/emails. My wedding venue pulled out with only two weeks to go. We didn’t have a contract in place (we were told constantly it was in the post!), this meant we had to cancel everything, as we had no time to find a replacement venue. We lost over £1,600 in deposits. Can we claim this from the venue? We didn’t have wedding insurance. I can fully appreciate how upsetting it must be to have this happen to you on such a special occasion. When you state that you did not have a contract, I assume that you mean that you did not have a written contract with the venue provider. However the fact that you have agreed terms with them and paid a deposit means that you had a verbal contract with them. As the venue cancelled they have breached that contract. The
Page 16
difficulties with verbal contracts are proving the exact terms that apply, however, the date was clearly agreed. Me and my partner have split, we have no children, but we do own a French bulldog. We both paid the same amount towards the dog, what rights do I have? At the moment she isn’t letting me see him. If you cannot agree matters with your partner directly, you might want to refer to a mediation service. This may help you to reach an agreement as to the time you each spend with your dog. The ownership of the dog depends on whether you are married and if not, who the registered owner of the dog might be. It may be possible to make an application to the small claims court or in a marital context. However, this would be costly and should be avoided. Mediation may be the best way forward and you can access a local mediator online. I am looking into running football classes (voluntarily, I don’t want to make a profit) for children in my area. It is something I have always wanted to do, but never got round to as I thought there would a number of different steps. Do I need a CRB check? If the children will be unsupervised at any time during the classes then a Disclosure and Barring Service search (the replacement for Criminal Records Bureaux CRB searches) will be required, even though it is a voluntary role.

Doncaster Knights Colts rewarded with valuable South Africa trip A young Doncaster Knights Colts u17s squad recently travelled to South Africa on tour, before the team separates for ventures elsewhere
The players left South Yorkshire for 10 days as they enjoyed training sessions, travelling and playing matches in the country well-known for its high-quality rugby. In three arranged friendlies with local high schools in South Africa, the u17s battled well in closely fought games, however, all ended up in defeat. Elsewhere on the tour, the players enjoyed time on the seal island cruise, a visit to a nature reserve, Boulders Beach, Table Mountain as well as the famous Robben Island. Also on the trip, the group enjoyed a lunch with former Springbok
Page 22
De Wet Barry, who made 39 appearances for South Africa and featured for Harlequins during his playing career. One member of Doncaster Knights Colts who works closely with the team, Nikki, told us that that tour was an ‘exciting opportunity’. “The u17 Tour is the culmination and celebration of years of building team spirit, morale and identity. Not only is it an exciting opportunity for players and coaches to create a memory that will hopefully last a lifetime, it is, for many a chance to say goodbye as new careers and opportunities beckon.”
