Local boy cycles 149km and raises £1,000 to remember those we have lost to Covid-19 Sixteen-year-old Oli Shearman, from Retford, has cycled 149km in memory of the people who have lost their lives to Covid-19 at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), and in doing so, has raised over £1,000 for the Trust’s charity Doncaster Echo chatted to Oli to find out more about what inspired him to take on this challenge. Oli told us: “I spent a while in Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals last year due to my mental health and it actually opened my eyes and has inspired me to pursue a career in paediatric nursing. “I wanted to say thank you to our local NHS for the outstanding work they have down during the Covid-19 pandemic in keeping us safe. I cycle regularly and thought I’d get on my bike and just cycle 1km for all those who have sadly lost their lives to coronavirus. “Unfortunately I’m a Sheffield Wednesday fan so I don’t have a lot to be happy about so I thought I’d try and put a smile on people’s faces. It wasn’t too difficult but the heat became a problem. It was

Page 4

absolutely amazing to raise £1,000 and I hope I have done Retford proud!” Gill Pickersgill, who helped with Oli’s journey, added: “Oli got in touch with me to tell me about his idea of a sponsored bike ride to remember the local community who have lost their lives to Covid. At that time across our Trust we had lost 149 patients so Oli set a target of 149km cycle across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. “Oli sent me pics throughout his ride which we promoted on our social media channels including the link to his JustGiving page. Oli’s ride finished on a Saturday morning in May and I arranged for colleagues to come out of their departments to welcome him over the finish line and paramedics who were on site welcomed him over the line with their sirens. “We continued to share the video of his arrival

at Bassetlaw Hospital which helped to raise the profile of his JustGiving page and some local media outlets picked the story up. Oli and I have kept in touch and he has been sharing with me how he has smashed his original target!” Emma Shaheen, Fundraising Lead at the hospital’s Trust, said : “We have been overwhelmed by the support of our local communities over the last 12 weeks which has meant so much to our teams in these challenging times. “Following Oli’s progress has been awe-inspiring and we thank him for his efforts and thank everyone who supported him in raising money for our hospitals. The money Oli has raised will go to the Trusts ‘Rainbow Gardens’ appeal to develop memorial gardens to remember those who have lost their lives to Covid-19 at the Trust, including two much-loved colleagues.”

The Rainbow Garden appeal seeks to create two beautiful spaces at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital respectfully in memory of the two colleagues who sadly passed away due to Covid-19, as well as all those who lost their fight against the virus. With a fundraising target of £35,000, the hospital Trust is asking local people to support this worthwhile cause by heading to the following link: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ doncaster-bassetlaw To donate to Oli’s fundraiser, please visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/OliShearmanTeamDBTH

E PERSPECTIVE: District Commander for Doncaster, Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley, reflects on 100 days of Covid restrictions and the relaxing of lockdown which allowed pubs and restaurants to reopen When I look back over the last few months I feel an enormous sense of pride at how the local community has responded to what has been asked of them as we worked to contain Covid-19.

comply with the measures that individual bars and restaurants had put in place. On the whole, venues were extremely well prepared to welcome the public back, and it was great to see places starting to trade again.

My officers have been deeply touched by the support that has been shown to them by those who live and work across the borough and join me in saying ‘thank you’ for all you have done. Because of your commitment to staying home and keeping the NHS safe, on Saturday 4 July we saw a relaxing of some of the coronavirus restrictions. Pubs and restaurants could open for the first time since the end of March.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that Covid-19 has by no means gone away. As more venues reopen, and more people have the confidence to go out, please continue to follow the guidelines put in place; they are there to protect you and those around you.

In the build-up to the 4 July we worked in partnership with Doncaster Council to ensure that licensees who were planning to open had the correct policies and procedures in place to protect their customers and staff, and ensure that everyone was able to enjoy a drink or meal out with friends and family safely. I was really pleased to see most people behave responsibly, observe social distancing and

You can expect to see a much higher police presence in Doncaster over the next few weekends, but we are there to support you. Please continue to behave responsibly, look after yourselves and look after each other. If you would like to find out more about the work my teams are doing in your local area you can register with SYP Alerts. You can choose to receive news and appeals, local crime information and/or prevention advice – direct to you by email, text or voice message.

BT announces Care service to tackle lone BT is announcing a pilot project to help tackle loneliness in care homes using volunteers from UK-based contact centres to make regular calls to isolated residents The Calls to Care Homes project was set up by a group of call centre agents who wanted to use their people skills to make a difference in their community and help tackle the issue of loneliness among the older generation. Volunteers work with the care-home managers to find a companion with similar interests and find a suitable time to help get the budding friendships off to the best start. The scheme now has a team of over 40 volunteers from BT contact centres across the North East, who have been making calls during their shifts to Marton Care Home residents. The pilot is still in the early stages but is already creating positive results.

Page 10

Doncaster will be the fourth contact centre to be involved with the scheme, with calls to local care homes started in July. Twenty volunteers have been selected to take part in the scheme, but dozens more have showed an interest in participating. Once the programme is rolled out more widely, BT Doncaster hopes that more individuals will be able to take part and that more care homes in the area will be able to benefit from the programme. Doncaster Echo chatted to Carol Boettcher, who is the lead on the project at Doncaster and will also be volunteering on the scheme when it officially kicks off next week.

Issue 009 - August/September 2020

e Home Companion eliness in care homes What made you want to get involved in the project? “I’ve always had a passion for volunteering and helping people. I’ve worked on other volunteering initiatives at BT before, helping out the Doncaster domestic abuse support group as well as the Bluebell Wood Hospice, so it’s something I enjoy getting involved in. As a BT Concierge, as soon as I heard about the Calls to Care Homes scheme at BT Gosforth, I was really keen to get our advisers involved and start making our own calls. What is the most rewarding thing to see? “For me, it’s really important to give back to our community and it’s rewarding to know that we can make a difference to people. A weekly call may seem like a small thing to us but it can be significant for someone else - it could make their week! I’m looking forward to listening to the stories that the residents have and hearing about their life experiences”

What more do you think could be done in the community to tackle loneliness? “At BT, we’ve seen the effects that loneliness can have in our community, and sometimes get calls from people just looking for a chat. “As a result, we’ve set up a dedicated team for vulnerable customers who might need some extra support. As call centre agents, we already spend our days chatting to people, so it’s great that we’re able to use our people skills for good. “It’s so important that we look after members of our communities, including those suffering from loneliness, and that local individuals and businesses offer their support. “Our hope is that we’ll be able to reach more people as the scheme is rolled out further and provide a listening ear to those who need it.” For more information, please visit www.btplc.com

Doncaster Children’s Services Trust delivering bags of hope for the young people of Doncaster Working to support vulnerable children through these challenging times, Doncaster Children’s Services Trust have developed a fun and caring initiative known as ‘Rainbow Bags’ Funded through a collaboration of teams at the Trust, the bags have been delivered across the borough to 25 young people and care leavers who have an existing relationship with the organisation. The idea was developed by a trio of colleagues at the Trust, including one of the Trust’s young advisers and PC Emma Bloodworth, a seconded Police Officer. This was to provide a bit of positivity to ensure the young people and care leavers across the borough that they aren’t alone. Speaking about the Rainbow Bag initiative, PC Emma Bloodworth said: “It was great to come

Page 12

together with my colleagues from across the Trust and create a plan on how we could provide our young people with a supportive message. This is a challenging time for most, and can be especially hard on our vulnerable young people so it is important to remind them that we are still here.” Doncaster Children’s Services Trust prides itself on its commitment to child wellbeing, and focuses on working to make a difference. Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how the industry has been making changes to allow people to put a will in place safely in a Covid-compliant environment

Have you put off writing a will due to shielding? For many, the current pandemic has acted as a catalyst for wanting to put a will or lasting power of attorney in place. However, due to shielding, social distancing or concerns for health they have put this on hold. There are more options available now for putting a will into place. As well as face to face, many will advisers, including ourselves, are doing Zoom/Skype appointments, telephone appointments and taking many more details using online forms. These allow for wills to be put into place remotely with no direct contact needed between yourself and us. Wills can then be posted out with full instructions of how to ensure that these are signed correctly. However, for those who are either unable to use online technology or who prefer to

Page 14

still see someone face to face, many will writers are still operating in person with appointments preferably outdoors where the risk of transmission is lower. They will also use appropriate PPE such as face masks and hand sanitiser. One benefit of this is that the signing of the wills can still be witnessed to be sure that they have been done compliantly. We have seen some great examples of flexibility in this area with wills being witnessed through windows, on garden tables outside and even on car bonnets. Regardless of your circumstances during this pandemic, will writers will endeavour to help you put a valid will into place so that you have the peace of mind knowing that your wishes can be respected after you have passed away.
