Local lads form social group
Doncaster Social
Group Association has been formed by Callum Tingle, and is supported by Chris Cunningham, Paul Baker and Rick Harrison
All three men were involved with Doncaster’s Man v Fat football league, a men’s weight loss and mental health programme. They decided early in June to do a fundraising walk to raise money for the club to support players who need financial support or similar, alongside Sheffield Hallamshire Flourish League. The walk was a great success, raising close to £1,500. Shortly after this the group was formed.
Doncaster Echo had a chat with Callum to find out more.
How did the idea come about?
We thought if we can raise this level of money why don’t we look at doing more, and supporting those in Doncaster who need it.
What is the aim of the group?
The aim of Doncaster Social Group Association is to hold various fundraising activities, from sporting events, group events, social events and general charity fundraising to create a charity pot that can be used to donate to anyone who needs support. This can range from local charities, social and sporting groups, schools and even residents of Doncaster in need of support.
How can people get involved?
To get involved in any aspect, whether that be to donate, get involved in an activity, become a sponsor or even be identified as receiving a donation we encourage all individuals to contact us via our Facebook page or email.
Who can join?
The group is open to anyone, any age from the Doncaster area.
Callum added: “We are intending over the next few months to advertise a social activity, a sporting event and even make an appearance at summer fairs, so we strongly stress you should follow our facebook page to get all the up-to-date information.”
Good luck to you and we cannot wait to see the group grow to be a huge success.
FROM A POLICE
New police and partner hub
This month, Doncaster Policing Team talks to us about the new partnership hub, which will see South Yorkshire Police working from a base in Denaby
“The officers on my team who cover the Denaby and Conisbrough areas will use this hub as a base when they are on duty patrolling in the area - to complete paperwork and take refreshment breaks.”
PERSPECTIVE:
hub launches in Denaby
The hub, on Tadcaster Close, which opened last month, has been created in a ground floor flat and has office space as well as a small kitchen and toilet facilities. It will be used by officers from Doncaster South Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), alongside officers from Doncaster Council’s Safer Communities Team and St Leger Homes.
Inspector Adrian Luscombe, who leads the Doncaster South NPT, believes the new hub will have a positive impact on the local community.
He said: “The officers on my team who cover the Denaby and Conisbrough areas will use this hub as a base when they are on duty patrolling in the area, to complete paperwork and take refreshment breaks.
“It will allow them to spend more time in the area during their shift, without the need to keep returning to Mexborough Police Station, improving visibility, making us more accessible to our communities and increasing efficiency. “We already have strong working relationships with both Doncaster Council and St Leger Homes. Having them using the hub alongside us means we can work together even more effectively to tackle the issues that matter most to our communities.” This new base follows on from the success of the
Acorn Hub, which launched in Armthorpe in February.
Councillor Lani-Mae Ball said: “This base is a really positive step for the residents of Denaby and Conisbrough. It will allow the police, council and St Leger Homes to be fully embedded in the community, enabling us to have an even bigger impact in the work that we do.
“It will also give us a better platform to tackle some of the more complex cases we deal with to ensure the best possible outcomes for our residents. This work can’t be done in isolation; partnership is key, and this base will play a big role in that moving forward.”
Claire Trigger, St Leger Homes, added: “It’s fantastic to see the hub up and running and I’m really excited to see the opportunities it presents us to make a real difference to the residents of Denaby.
“Anti-social behaviour is a real issue for residents in this area, and hopefully this new hub, with the increased local presence it will facilitate, illustrates our commitment to tackling it.”
Keep an eye on SYP, Doncaster Council and St Leger Homes’ social media channels for updates about engagement events at the hub.
Flying Scotsman returns to Doncaster
Flying Scotsman, the most famous steam locomotive in the world, has marked her centenary by returning to our city where she was built one hundred years ago
Arriving at Doncaster Railway Station to a warm welcome from invited guests, civic dignitaries and family members who share proud links, Flying Scotsman took pride of place on Platform 4 for her visit. In 1923, the Flying Scotsman was the first locomotive built at the Doncaster Works by the then newly formed LNER, which also celebrates its own centenary this year.
City of Doncaster Council and London North Eastern Railway (LNER) hosted the special visit, along with support from the National Railway Museum.
In 40 years of service, the Flying Scotsman broke numerous world speed and distance records and was one of the famous locomotives introduced by LNER during its century of service on the East Coast Main Line, connecting the capitals of England and Scotland. Flying Scotsman went into service on 24 February 1923 and cost £7,944 to build. She was the first locomotive to officially reach 100mph in the UK, and the first to circumnavigate the globe.
Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, said: “I am delighted to welcome Flying Scotsman back home to her birthplace here in Doncaster. We are
incredibly proud of our rail heritage and we will always be associated with this iconic locomotive.
“We are looking forward to another visit later this year, where Flying Scotsman will be here in Doncaster once again and members of the public will have the chance to see the locomotive up close. More details about this will be shared in the coming weeks.
“I would like to thank LNER for hosting this wonderful event today and we congratulate them
for 100 years of history. I would also like to thank the National Railway Museum for their support.”
David Horne, LNER Managing
Director,said:
“This is a proud day for Doncaster and a proud day for us here at LNER, welcoming Flying Scotsman back to the city where she was built in her centenary year. Over the past century LNER has pushed boundaries to create ever greater feats of engineering, speed, comfort and customer service, while improving journeys between London to Scotland. Flying Scotsman is part
of that rich heritage and that pioneering spirit continues in LNER today as we look to provide our customers with the best possible travel experience.”
Events are taking place across Doncaster throughout 2023 as part of Flying Scotsman’s centenary year to celebrate this significant milestone with schools, museums and libraries getting involved. The full programme is available to view at www.dglam.org.uk/whats-on/flyingscotsman
