First small seafood cafĂŠ located in Doncaster Market Doncaster Market may not be somewhere you have ever considered would be the home to a fabulous fish restaurant, but Clam & Cork has recently been announced as a new entry in the Waitrose-sponsored Good Food Guide 2020 and is attracting many visitors to its market stall The Clam & Cork concept was started in 2018 with Michael Price, a highly regarded local chef who runs a supper club, and Michael Berry, a wellknown fishmonger in the market since 2018. Located in the fish market, the traditional wet-fish stall has been converted to a restaurant with an open-plan kitchen area and bar seating around the perimeter. Small and large plates are freshly cooked to order with the large majority of ingredients sourced from

All of our wines are available by the glass, so you do have the flexibility to match perfectly with whatever you’re eating, although our wines are not the usual obvious pick. FROM A POLICE Edlington’s police station will reopen in 2020

“We’ve chosen Edlington as the first area to benefit from its own community team because of the policing need there, particularly in terms of antisocial behaviour issues.”

Page 8

Issue 006 - December/January 2020

E PERSPECTIVE: Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley tells Doncaster Echo readers about the new plans for the Doncaster Neighbourhood Policing Team in 2020 Following the news that there will be 20 additional officers joining the Doncaster Neighbourhood Policing Team in 2020, it has now been announced that Edlington’s police station will re-open in the New Year. While there has always been a police presence across the borough, Edlington hasn’t had its own station for a number of years. Back in 2018, the site, on Main Avenue, opened to the public two days a week, and served more as a hub for various community services than a conventional police station. It always remained open for officers to use as a base, but the public has not been able to use it to contact officers. Having listened to the community’s concerns about the area, Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley has now committed additional resources to ensure a visible and dedicated police presence for Edlington. He explains: “Neighbourhood policing is a key part of our long-term strategy for Doncaster, and across South Yorkshire. Now that I have

access to additional resources for the borough it’s right that they are re-invested into the areas that need it the most. “With a policing team at the centre of Edlington village, we can continue to build on the work we have already started. We’ve chosen Edlington as the first area to benefit from its own community team because of the policing need there, particularly in terms of antisocial behaviour issues. “Funding is already in place for more officers, and our ambition is that over the next three years we will be back at pre-austerity levels of policing in terms of the number of officers that we have. “This is a hugely positive step forward for those who live, work and spend time in Edlington. If you see officers out and about today, please do stop for a chat and let them know your thoughts on our plans. We want to see Edlington thrive, but we can only make that happen with the help and support of other partners who work in the area, and you, the community.”

“Not all solid tiled roofs are the same It is essential not to fall into the trap of thinking that all tiled roof conversions are the same. There are significant structural, safety and energy efficiency considerations when choosing a tiled roof system. Unlike some other roof systems that are old-style conservatory roofs, modified to carry tiles, our unique Nuroom roof system was designed from the ground up and is bespoke. Our roof system does not over or under-clad your existing roof, it is a complete roof replacement constructed using patented

Nuroom galvanised steel sections and is fully compliant with all the necessary Building Regulations, and with a full system approval from JHAI for complete peace of mind. Many homeowners have, over the years, taken the decision to add a conservatory to their home in order to expand their living space. Replacement solid tiled conservatory roof systems have been developed to lock in heat during the winter and prevent overheating in the summer months.

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks us through everything we need to know about putting your house into a trust

I want to put my house into a trust so my family will not need to pay care fees! Over the past few weeks I have had several enquiries which have gone along the lines of the headline above. This is a popular question asked of most IFAs and estate planners. With many having to pay care fees of over £100,000, it’s natural that people are looking to try and protect themselves against these costs. However, if the council can prove that a house was placed into trust or gifted they will still include the gift/trust in their calculation for what care fees you would owe. The key thing to consider is if the council could view anything you have done as a deliberate deprivation of assets in order to avoid paying care fees. An example of when a trust would likely to be accepted is if an extended family were living together, and the property was then either gifted to the children or put into a trust for future generations. They would then become responsible for maintaining the house and

supporting the older generation. Another option is to include trusts within a will. This works especially well when there are two people left living in the property and can help to safeguard a property against future decisions or actions by the second survivor. It is also popular for blended families. For example, Bob and Brenda are married and they own their own. They have three children who they want to safeguard as much as possible for their children to inherit. On the death of the first person, of them the 50% of the property they own is placed into trust for the three children but the spouse retains the right to remain in the house rent free for the rest of their lifetime. The spouse may also have the option to downsize and release some of the equity. In the event that the surviving spouse goes into care only the 50% they still own can be used as part of the care fee assessment.

Get all your legal questions answered

Please mention Doncaster Echo when calling advertisers

Our friends at Taylor Bracewell are back again answering all your legal questions that you have sent in. If you have any legal enquiries or concerns, be sure to email us at sales@createtvt.co.uk to receive expert help free of charge Me and my partner have split, we have no children, but we do own a French bulldog. We both paid the same amount towards the dog, what rights do I have? At the moment she isn’t letting me see him. If you cannot agree matters with your partner, you might want to refer to a mediation service. This may help you to reach an agreement as to the time you each spend with your dog. The ownership of the dog depends on whether you are married and if not, who the registered owner of the dog might be. It may be possible to make an application to the small claims court or in a marital context. However, this would be costly and should be avoided. Mediation may be the best way forward. I am a single father-of-one. He is 10. I am on the birth certificate, does this give me parental responsibility automatically? My son doesn’t live with me full time, I pay my maintenance and he stays over often. As long as you are named on your son’s birth certificate, you will automatically have parental responsibility. You will have shared rights and responsibilities with the mother of your son. How expensive is a solicitor? Do they work hourly, or for a fixed fee? Do they charge when I first go in? I don’t think I can afford to have any advice. We would always recommend that you call our solicitors for an initial chat about your problem, we may be able to assist on the telephone at no cost. The costs of instructing a solicitor can depend on many things such as the area of law, and the experience of the solicitor. Solicitors work for fixed fees and on an hourly rate basis. Again,

Page 16

this will depend on the nature of the legal work. Conveyancing transactions, wills and some family work can be on a fixed-fee basis. I’ve been at a company now for nine years. I am 63 and in this time I have seen two new starters get promoted (within the last two years). I am happy for them, but my manager says head office do not want to promote me due to my age and the fact I will be retiring in the coming years. It is also because I’ll get a higher retirement package. Is this age discrimination? An employee can bring a claim under the Equality Act 2010 for discrimination if they have been treated unfairly, or if they have been denied an opportunity such as a promotion because of their age, unless it can be objectively justified. The Employment Appeals Tribunal have ruled that the wish to save money alone is not a legitimate aim to justify discrimination. This type of discrimination requires a comparison with colleagues who have the same characteristics as you but are of a different age, to show that you have been disadvantaged because of your age. If you cannot resolve the matter informally, it is advisable to raise an internal grievance using your employer’s grievance procedure. Your employer should investigate your concerns and arrange a meeting with you to discuss. If you are not happy with the outcome, you can bring a claim in the Employment Tribunal whilst you are still employed, provided that the claim is issued within three months less one day from the date of the alleged discriminatory act.

South Yorkshire Men’s Pool B team are national runners-up in pool finals

Thousands of pool players representing ladies, youths, seniors, masters and men’s teams descended on Rhyl for the English Blackball Pool Federation National Finals.

The finals saw them face a tough Teeside team and unfortunately South Yorkshire were unable to match Teeside’s strength and lost 14-6, placing them as the runners-up of the competition.

And this year, for the first time in South Yorkshire County Pool history, the Men’s B team qualified for their place among the best of the best.

Alan Whawell said to Doncaster Echo: “Although we are disappointed to not have won the final game, I am very proud of my team and the effort that was put in to get us to this position. For the first time in South Yorkshire County history the B team qualified for the National Finals, which is an achievement. To come runners-up of the whole event, is amazing!

The team consisted of Dave Margrave, Mick Beck, John Maher, Sam Grimshaw, Ryan Brooke, Mick McGuinness, Russ Horbury, Steve Purvis, Matty Dodson, Adam Short and Captain Alan Whawell. After a hard fought few days battling it out against 16 other Men’s B teams, they sealed their place in the quarter finals where they were to face Derbyshire. The team fought hard in a back and forth battle to beat a strong Derbyshire side 14-12. This put them into the semi-finals, where they reached Cambridgeshire’s team, but after some great pool South Yorkshire came out on top again 14-6.

Page 22

Now on to next year, where the title will be ours!” With the 2019 season drawing to a close, attention is turning to the 2020 season, and South Yorkshire Blackball Pool are looking for players of all ages, genders and abilities to join them at the upcoming trials. If you love cue sports and would like to try out, please like and follow @SYBBP on Facebook, where dates and venues of the trials will be posted soon!
