Charlotte Lister from Doncaster, the current Ms Diamond South Yorkshire, has won a competition to be one of the new faces of Flawless Studios in Leeds Flawless is the largest photography and makeover studios in the North with decades of experience. It offers photography and makeover packages that can be tailored to you. Flawless Studio was looking for new faces to be part of their new social media campaign, and out of hundreds of entries, Charlotte made the shortlist of 22 finalists. The public’s input was required to select the final four and Charlotte was chosen. Charlotte and the other three finalists were invited to the studio to have their free makeover and photo shoot so the images can be used in future social marketing campaigns. Charlotte, 33, previously worked in sales but due to Covid was made unemployed and is now currently training to be a teaching assistant. Doncaster Echo caught up with Charlotte to find out more about her victory. Have you done anything like this before? I’m not new to beauty pageants. I have previously won Face of the Globe England and competed internationally at Paris and also won Royal U.K. Ms Role model. This is my first competition for a while though and I can’t wait to be on stage again. What made you enter the competition? I was selected as I finalist in 2016 but due to a holiday I couldn’t compete. I now felt the time was right to give my all to the competition, both mentally and to my platform which is cancer awareness and end of life care.
Page 4
What is the social media campaign about? So Flawless Studio was looking for new faces for their Social Media Campaign “Flawless Faces”. The winners would be the face of the Leeds studio. I saw it advertised two hours before it closed and thought I would enter as it’s an amazing opportunity. You get to have a photoshoot, you hair and make-up done, and basically be pampered for a day! During Covid, like, everyone, I hadn’t had chance to get dressed up and have fun and I thought why not, I might as well enter! How does it feel to be selected? It was amazing especially as I seemed to be one of the oldest entries. I couldn’t believe I was selected as a finalist, it’s such an amazing opportunity for me and Flawless Photography Studios. When were you awarded Ms Diamond South Yorkshire? I was given awarded the title in April 2019. The finials were due to take place in April 2020 and internationals in July 2020 but due to Covid they have both been postponed. My UK final is due to take place in Feb 2021 and internationals July 2021. How does it feel to be Ms Diamond South Yorkshire? It’s incredible, I have been given so many opportunities already, I can’t wait to see what the future holds. Do you have any plans to enter any more beauty competitions? I would love to be Ms Diamond UK so right now that’s my main priority pageant wise. Whether it takes me a year or five, I won’t compete in other competitions until I have accomplished my goal.

FROM A POLICE
Introducing Chief Super Doncaster’s new Di This month, South Yorkshire Police introduces the new Chief Superintendent to the team and lets our readers know a little more about her
“I’m excited to be back in Doncaster, the place I call home. I have been given a unique opportunity to work with colleagues and partners to improve outcomes for the communities of Doncaster, and I can’t wait to get started.”

E PERSPECTIVE:
rintendent Melanie Palin istrict Commander Chief Superintendent Melanie Palin brings a wealth of policing experience to her new team in Doncaster and as a local resident is well placed to understand the issues that are most important to those who live and work in the borough. Melanie takes over from Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley as he prepares to retire later this year. Having joined South Yorkshire Police in 1992 Melanie has worked across many areas of policing, including Districts, Performance and Governance and Serious Crime Investigation. She has also undertaken roles as a Public Order Commander and Tactical Firearms Commander. In addition, Chief Superintendent Palin has extensive experience of working in partnership to protect vulnerable people and has strategically delivered as Force Lead for Hate Crime, Child Exploitation and Domestic Abuse. On her new posting she says: “I’m excited to be back in Doncaster, the place I call home. I have been given a unique opportunity to work with colleagues and partners to improve outcomes for the communities of Doncaster, and I can’t wait to get started.” She adds: “I understand that Doncaster has its challenges. My aims are to keep people safe, uphold
standards, deliver an excellent service and improve victim satisfaction and public confidence. Leadership is the key to delivering these aims. In order to deliver an excellent service it is vital that we are effective at balancing the demands of protecting vulnerable people, tackling local issues, preventing serious and organised crime and bringing offenders to justice. I am committed to working in partnership and maximising the effectiveness of our neighbourhood policing resources to make Doncaster a better place to be. “I will continue to build on the success our Local Neighbourhood Policing Teams have had since their re-introduction in 2017, and seek to deliver through the locally-based model which sees us working in an imaginative and multi-agency way to tackle both the simple and complex issues that our communities face. Fundamentally this approach should ensure that our combined output is in fact greater than the sum of its parts. “I know that Doncaster has been through a tough time. The floods in November 2019 followed by a global pandemic which is clearly going to affect us all for some time to come. I want to reassure you that we have been delivering a service throughout and will continue to do so. My teams are passionate and committed, more so now than ever.”

Cyclist completes bike ride in aid of ending modern slavery and breaks Guinness world record #RideForFreedom2020 builds on the success of RideForFreedom2019, the charity bike ride Gordon Miller organised and rode. He visited 10 UK cities in 10 days from 7-18 October 2019 to support the survivors of modern slavery via the work of charities Unseen and Hope for Justice Now Gordon and his team have completed another charity bike ride which has seen them breaking a Guinness World Record, all in aid of putting an end to modern slavery. The Guinness World Records ride route encompasses 16 individual stages (each one forms a letter that makes up the slogan ‘End Modern Slavery’), starting in Manchester, traversing the counties of Lancashire, Cheshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. It then travelled south, crisscrossing Shropshire, the West and East Midlands and East Anglia, before

negotiating Somerset, Hampshire and ended in Central London. International Anti-Slavery Day is 18th October, and just 10 days later, Gordon received his official record of cycling 620.5 miles (998.7km) to spell ‘End Modern Slavery.’ The letter D of the route was Doncaster which took place on 18th September. The whole challenge ran in time and ended on the 2nd October as planned.

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how recent events are making people look to put a will into place
Why you need to put a will in place now Here are six reasons why you need to write a will. 1. Decide what happens to your estate Having a will is the only way you can choose who you want your property, money and possessions to be passed on to. A will is a legally-binding document that lets you decide how your estate is distributed after you’ve died. 2. Decide who will look after your children A will allows you to make an informed decision about who should take care of your minor children. Without a Will, the court will take it upon itself to choose among family members. This is not guaranteed to happen immediately and can result in minor children being taken into care temporarily. 3. Avoid a lengthy and costly probate Probate courts serve the purpose of ‘administering your estate’, and when you die
Page 14
without a Will (known as dying ‘intestate’), the court will decide how to divide your estate without your input, which can also cause long, unnecessary delays. 4. Choose who you want to disinherit You can disinherit individuals who would otherwise stand to inherit. This may involve soon-to-be ex spouses who are going through the divorce process. 5. Tomorrow is not promised There are few in life who like to think about death and this is the most frequent reason I am given for why people have put off putting a Will into place. 6. Giving peace of mind to family members To avoid the added stress on families during an already emotional time, making a Will or updating an existing Will can give you peace of mind for the future.
