FROM A POLICE South Yorkshire Police wishes you a merry Christmas!

“As we look towards the new year, my neighbourhood teams will be continuing to utilise their ‘pop-up’ police stations in locations across the district. They love to be out in the community, meeting and speaking with people face to face. So if you see them when you’re out, please do go and have a chat with them.”

Issue 017 - December/January 2022

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, District Commander for Doncaster, Chief Superintendent Melanie Palin, reflects on the last 12 months and looks towards a safe and happy festive period for Doncaster Looking back over the last year, I am struck by how our local communities right across Doncaster came together, both in the effort to stop the spread of Covid-19 and in the drive to get the town up and running again after lockdown. There is no shying away from how difficult it has been at times. But through hard work, determination and by looking out for each other, we are hopefully coming out of the other side. I’m sure, like me, everyone is looking forward to enjoying the festive celebrations with family and friends that many of us missed out on last year. But I would also like to take this opportunity to remind people about the importance of keeping themselves and their property safe over the festive period. When you’re out Christmas shopping, keep valuables in the inside pockets of coats or bags and keep an eye on them, always shield your pin when using cash machines and don’t leave your bag unattended in a trolley or while loading up your car. When shopping online make sure you are using trusted websites. If a deal looks too good to be true, then it probably is. Only provide enough details to complete your purchase and make sure

you keep your accounts and passwords secure. At home, always keep doors and windows locked and keep valuables, including wrapped Christmas presents, out of sight. Make your house look occupied when you are out by using a timer switch to operate lamps when it starts to get dark. As we look towards the new year, my neighbourhood teams will be continuing to utilise their ‘pop-up’ police stations in locations across the district. They love to be out in the community, meeting and speaking with people face to face. So if you see them when you’re out, please do go and have a chat with them. Another great way to keep up to date with the work my teams are doing in your local area is by registering with SYP Alerts. You can choose to receive news and appeals, local crime information and/or prevention advice – direct to you by email, text or voice message. Registering for alerts is completely free and once you have signed-up, you can choose how you want to receive the messages and what you want to receive messages about. Doncaster entrepreneur shares growth story to inspire small businesses Savvy entrepreneur, public speaker and marketing specialist, Rik Courtney, is making it his life mission to inspire and help businesses from all sectors to achieve their goals Already helping over 120 businesses across England via his company, Be More Social, the entrepreneur is now taking his wisdom to the global stage. Rik Courtney is an entrepreneur, public speaker and the CEO of Be More Social – the UK’s fastestgrowing social media marketing consultancy and one of the first of its kind in the country. Rik founded Be More Social in 2010 and is passionate about inspiring and educating businesses on how to use social media for marketing and business growth. Rik is an avid public speaker, regularly delivering social media marketing sessions at events and workshops. Doncaster Echo caught up with Rik to find out more about how

Page 8

the idea came about and what his plans for the future are. How did the idea for Be More Social come about? I set up Be More Social in 2010. It was just me initially running a social media agency service, where I’d do the work required for my clients. However, as the social media marketing industry began to explode, I realised that there was so much more I could do to help businesses create impact with their social media efforts, which is when Be More Social pivoted from an agency model to a consultancy and social media franchise. Be More Social is one of the first of its kind in the UK. We make social media simple for people to understand, especially businesses in B2C and B2B so they can get results that deliver a return.

What have you found most challenging about running your business? When the pandemic first hit, we lost 80% of our customers overnight. It was a really challenging time and we didn’t know what was going to happen from there, but we quickly managed to turn things around. I’m incredibly proud of my team for everything that they’ve helped to achieve during the pandemic and seeing how they’ve adapted to new ways of working has been impressive.

Issue 017 - December/January 2022

What is the most rewarding part of running your business? The most rewarding part of running Be More Social is educating people on the power of social media, and helping our customers learn how to drive real, tangible results using social media marketing. We get to work with such a diverse group of people and businesses which means that no day is ever the same. It’s also really rewarding for me to watch the Be More Social

team learn and grow with the business.

channel optimisation to social listening and advertising.

We really do have a fantastic team of experts who want to see all our customers succeed online.

Our goal as a business is to work with one percent of the 5.9 million small businesses in the UK, which amounts to 59,000 customers.

What plans do you have for the future for Be More Social? The company has quickly grown to a team of 16 head office employees, as word spreads about our unique approach to supporting businesses with everything from social media

For the rest of this year and into 2022, we will be working hard to grow the Be More Social franchise and hope to work with business owners overseas to support their social media success.

Raising awareness of county lin Partner organisations from across the Borough have been working to raise awareness of the national issue of county lines County Lines is where illegal drugs are transported from one area to another, often across police and local authority boundaries (although not exclusively), usually by children or vulnerable people who are coerced into it by organised gangs. A common feature in county lines drug supplies/suppliers is the exploitation of young and vulnerable people. The dealers will target and manipulate children and young people to act as drug runners or move cash so they can stay under the watchful eye of law enforcement. Working with South Yorkshire Police, Doncaster Children’s Trust’s child exploitation and EPIC team has also been working to develop new innovative ways to educate the community spot the signs and help children and young people who have fallen victim to grooming and exploitation. The child exploitation team have also been working

Page 12

alongside Doncaster Council, Doncaster CCG, Doncaster Primary Care, and South Yorkshire Police to develop a Borough wide campaign that echoes the message Doncaster says NO to child exploitation. Carmel Bartlett, Senior Education Welfare Officer from Doncaster Children’s Services Trust said: ‘’Working with partners, we are able to share our professional insight and knowledge to put preventative practice in place for individual children. As a community we can help by spotting the tell-tale signs which indicate a child is being exploited, these are: • An increase in visitors and cars to a house or flat • New faces appearing at the house or flat • New and regularly changing residents • Change in resident’s mood and/or demeanour • Substance misuse and/or drug paraphernalia

• Changes in the way young people you might know dress • Unexplained, sometimes unaffordable new things • Residents or young people you know going missing, maybe for long periods of time • Young people seen in different cars/taxis driven by unknown adults • Young people seeming unfamiliar with your community or where they are

nes

• Truancy, exclusion, disengagement from school • An increase in anti-social behaviour in the community • Unexplained injuries “Recognising these signs help us as professionals alongside parents/carers to help prevent and support as many young people as possible and combat county lines allowing young people to have their normal childhoods back.’’ Encouraging the community to

speak out and say something is vitally important, individuals who suspect something is wrong can report concerns anonymously 24/7 by call or text to 116 000. Jayne Pezzulo, who works in the Doncaster Child Exploitation Team for Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), said: “If any member of the public believes a child is in immediate danger the police should be contacted by calling

999. If there are concerns about a child but there is no immediate danger they should get in touch with either the police on 101 or they can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. If you have any concerns please let us know.” For more information about child exploitation and how to report it, go to: www. doncasterchildrensservicestrust.co.uk
