FROM A POLICE

New District Comma This month, Chief Supt Ian Proffitt talks to us about taking over as the new District Commander for Doncaster and what his plans are for the upcoming year

‘I know Doncaster is a very busy district, with a number of diverse communities to serve and complex challenges to tackle. I am also acutely aware of the issues that have been having a negative impact on the town centre - namely anti-social behaviour, begging, rough sleeping and illegal drug use. I want to reassure the people of Doncaster that we are working hard to address these issues.’

E PERSPECTIVE:

ander for Doncaster At the end of last year I took over as Temporary District Commander for Doncaster, following Chief Supt Melanie Palin’s retirement from the force after almost 30 years of service. This is a position which I am extremely proud to take on and I’m looking forward to working with partners and our communities across Doncaster in the coming weeks and months. I joined South Yorkshire Police in 1998, and have worked in a number of investigative roles including District CID, Intelligence, Major Crime and proactive policing. I have also led local neighbourhood teams, as well as Fortify and Safer Neighbourhood Services in both Rotherham and Sheffield. My most recent post before taking up my new role in Doncaster was the Head of Operations in Specialist Crime Services.

local neighbourhood team is conducting joint patrols with the town centre ambassadors, and has established a pop-up police station within the Frenchgate Centre. They will be supported by a number of specialist teams from across the force, including our Tactical Support Group, Operational Support Unit and mounted officers. I would encourage anyone who has any issue to please go and speak to them. They are there to support you, but can’t help with an issue if they don’t know about it.

I know Doncaster is a very busy district, with a number of diverse communities to serve and complex challenges to tackle. I am also acutely aware of the issues that have been having a negative impact on the town centre - namely anti-social behaviour, begging, rough sleeping and illegal drug-use.

Just before Christmas, we identified a number of people who had been engaged in incidents involving groups of youths causing disorder in the town centre, Frenchgate Centre and the Interchange. Officers have arrested five people for criminal damage, assault and public order offences. The individuals have been released on police bail with a condition not to enter Doncaster town centre, specifically the Interchange and Frenchgate Centre. The investigation into these incidents Is ongoing and I know that there will be more arrests as we work hard to identify those that cause problems in the town centre.

I want to reassure the people of Doncaster that we are working hard to address these issues. The

There is a lot of work ahead of us, but me and my teams are up for that challenge.

New youth hub opens in Frenchgate Centre The EPIC Hub is a brand-new youth facility in the Frenchgate Centre. It has been designed with the help of young people to provide a safe and inspiring place for teenagers of Doncaster to visit in their leisure time The hub, which opened at the end of last year, will provide the opportunity for young people to learn new skills and take part in creative and sporting activities with their friends. Karen Staniforth, General Manager Frenchgate Shopping Centre, added: “We understand the importance of getting young people involved in their town centre. Many of these young people already use the shopping centre regularly as customers. We are excited to get involved in this innovative project, which enables our partners at EPIC to meet and support young people on a regular basis. The Hub will be located on the ground floor of the centre.” The EPIC Hub will be managed by Team EPIC, a Young People’s Crime Prevention Programme delivered through Doncaster Children’s Services Trust. EPIC’s dedicated team of youth workers will deliver a range of sessions from urban street art workshops, spoken word poetry, to educational support including young people accessing work experience, coding workshops, and catch-up learning. The team will also be delivering sessions on how to keep safe online and staying safe in

our communities. There will also be arranged opportunities for the young people to take part in organised events at Flip Out, Doncaster Dome and at the Keepmoat Stadium. Marcus Isman -Egal, Programme Manager at EPIC Youth Crime Prevention Service, said: “We are so excited to be working with Frenchgate Shopping Centre and South Yorkshire Police, alongside our partners at the Interchange and Doncaster Council to create an innovative “Safe Zone” for young people. “This space will be provided to explore the world of work and enterprise along with participating in positive activities. There will also be opportunities for bookable coaching and mentoring appointments for young people and small support groups. These will be provided to any young person facing challenges or seeking to make changes for themselves or their community.” The Hub has been developed in a collaboration between the ‘Young Advisers’, the Frenchgate Centre, Transport Interchange, Doncaster Children’s Services Trust, Doncaster Council, South Yorkshire Police and British Transport Police.

the

The Hub will support young people through positive intervention to help each young person’s individual needs and circumstances. It will also support their emotional wellbeing, selfdevelopment and self-awareness and teach about the risks that young people can be exposed to and to avoid the dangerous distractions of anti-social behaviour and crime.

Funded by a grant from South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, Graham Jones, Head of South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit, said: “This is an excellent example of organisations working together to support young people.” You can find out more about the work of EPIC here: www.epicdoncaster.co.uk

Doncaster care firm to rew

for their outstanding comm Hales Group have awarded 31 carers £600 each in the Hales Heroes draw Care group Hales is delighted to announce that thirty-one of their care workers each won £600 each in December, through its Hales Heroes Scheme. The Hales Heroes award scheme is now in its fourth year, and Hales has announced that due to their outstanding commitment, in what has been another difficult year both personally and professionally for its loyal team, 31 care workers from across their branch network around the country won £600 each at the end of 2021. The Hales Heroes awards were introduced in 2017 to commend staff for their hard work, while acknowledging those who are prepared to go above and beyond what is expected of them for the good of their fellow staff members and service users. This has come into sharper focus in the past few years with the difficulties posed by the pandemic. Nicola Mewse, Hales Homecare’s Managing Director had this to say, “The last 18 months have demonstrated more than ever that our Heroes, those on the frontline, and those supporting in essential tasks within branches, have never been more valuable and needed in our communities.” “Our Hales Heroes scheme has always recognised the outstanding efforts of our teams and provided a valuable prize to one team member each month, but at this time we wanted to extend the opportunity to win more incredible prizes by offering all staff the opportunity to be amongst 31 heroes across each of our branches. “Of course, every one of our loyal and committed staff are heroes in our eyes, this scheme is a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of them.” A massive congratulations to all those who received the award, the last two years has not been easy for those in the caring industry and you all hugely deserve it!
