FROM A POLICE
Lifting of COV
This issue, Doncaster’s District Commander, Chief Superintendent Melanie Palin, talks to us about the lifting of COVID restrictions and how that affects our area
‘Now is the time to support those in the hospitality sector as they find their way around new ways of operating. We all need to be patient, be prepared for longer waits than usual and remember that restrictions are still in place which must be observed.’
Page 6
Issue 014 - June/July 2021
E PERSPECTIVE:
VID restrictions I know the word ‘unprecedented’ has been used countless times over the last year - it’s perhaps becoming a bit of a cliché, but how else do we describe what we’ve experienced? The pandemic has certainly tested us all but, with the success of the vaccination programme and warmer weather on the horizon, there are many reasons for hope and anticipation of better times to come. I’ve spoken before of the gratitude my officers feel for the support you have shown them as they have continued to protect our communities despite the risk Covid-19 poses. As restrictions ease and life begins to return to something that we recognise as normal I ask that you continue this support, not just for police officers, but also those who work in the sectors that have been most affected by the pandemic. Now is the time to support those in the hospitality sector as they find their way around new ways of operating. We all need to be patient, be prepared for longer waits than usual and remember that restrictions are still in place. If you’re planning a trip out, think ahead; do you need to book a table? Are you happy to wait if you need to? How will you get home? Public transport is
still operating at reduced capacity and taxis need to be booked in advance. I know that all of this may feel like the spontaneity has been taken away from some of the most enjoyable aspects of life, but for now, let’s focus on the positive. Hospitality is reopening, we’re on course for further lifting of restrictions in the coming weeks, and we’re coming out of this pandemic with a new appreciation for the things that truly matter to us. My teams will continue to do what they do best – protect and serve the communities of Doncaster. Whilst we’re not quite ready to return to face-to-face community events, there are lots of other ways that you can keep up to date with what they’re up to. You can find your local officers and their contact details on the SYP website, and by registering with SYP Alerts, you can choose to receive news, appeals, local crime information and/or prevention advice direct to you by email, phone or text message. If you’re a fan of Facebook and Twitter, each of the three teams that cover Doncaster have their own dedicated page where they regularly post updates on what they’ve been up and the priorities that local communities have asked them to focus on. Stay safe, look after each other and if you see a local officer do stop to say hello.

Local support worker runn miles to raise money for De Vicky Hogg, 35, a support worker from Doncaster, started her journey running from John O’Groats to Land’s End last month! She expects to cover a total of 900 miles over 30 days, in order to cover the length of the country by foot During an incredibly challenging year as a support worker for the local council, helping people who have just left hospital, Vicky has seen the devastating effects that dementia can have on families. By undertaking JOGLE for Dementia UK, she hopes to raise money and awareness, so that families and carers no longer have to sacrifice their own wellbeing to ensure their loved ones have the best care possible. Vicky started her run on 24th May until the 22nd June, and will be running around 30 miles daily. She will be sleeping in her camper van in campsites overnight on the way down along the route. While not the fastest route, Vicky will be taking a more scenic option that takes in cycle paths, trails and minor roads along the way, to see the country in a different light. Doncaster Echo had a chat with Vicky to find out more about the challenge. What inspired you to take on the challenge? I was inspired to do this challenge to raise money and awareness for Dementia UK. I see how dementia affects individuals and their families every day in my job role in as a carer for Doncaster council. I have seen the impact it has not only on the individual but for the families too - it changes family relationships, leaves people isolated and affects both the health and finances of family carers. This last year with the pandemic it has been particularly tough for people living with dementia, as it’s left people even more isolated and feeling alone. I hope I can help so many people by doing this crazy mad run.
Page 10
How much are you hoping to raise? I set my JustGiving fundraising target at £1,000 but I have gone over that now, with my total currently at £1,500. With lots of people taking an interest, I feel like we can do even more and it would be amazing if we can get it to £5,000. Have you had any support in your training for this event? I have been blown away by the support from everyone. I have also had some wonderful sponsors that have wanted to help with this challenge and I’m so grateful. A huge thanks to Metre to Miles and 361° who have supplied me with all my trainers and kit which I’m loving running in. I’ve also got support from The Unit MMA, VH Sports Massage Therapist, Kay Shackleton photography, Thorne Joinery Services, CA Rail Specialists, Tim the legend boon. Pete Chappel signs and Harworth Colliery FC. Another big thanks to Clif Bar for supplying me with my energy snacks during my training and for the run. Everyone at Doncaster Echo wishes Vicky the best of luck in this fundraising challenge!

Doncaster Samaritans offering vital help and support in difficult times This month, Doncaster Echo talks to our local Samaritans branch about the support and help it offers our community Times have been tougher on many people, especially this past year, and finding somebody who will listen in a very real and meaningful way could be that lifeline someone needs in dark periods of their life. Anne Burge from the Doncaster Samaritans tells Doncaster Echo: “At Doncaster Samaritans we believe that listening without being judged is a very powerful tool in our quest for fewer people to lose a life through suicide. It is important that there are services like Samaritans where people can make contact, not only because they are feeling suicidal but if they are troubled, distressed or concerned. Finding somebody who will listen in a very real and meaningful way without judgement is a powerful tool. “This is more significant because we are available day and night when many other services are closed, making it invaluable to many. During the pandemic one in five of calls received have been
Page 16
from callers directly concerned with coronavirus. “Doncaster Samaritans is one of 201 branches who offers emotional support for anyone in need. The service is currently offered in a variety of ways; phone or email, or people can even write a letter to our correspondence branch. “Doncaster Samaritans contributes to a 24/7 service every day of the year. At Doncaster, we are very proud of the fact that our volunteer-run service has continued without a break throughout the pandemic. “In Doncaster we have continued to train new volunteers with online training. Training and mentoring new listening volunteers takes a great deal of commitment and time but for us it’s an essential requirement in order to maintain future provision of emotional support in the long-term. Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how marriage can affect your personal money affairs
Why does marriage matter in estate planning? For many people the laws around wills and estate planning can seem a little behind the times. One seemingly little-known fact is that getting married will invalidate any current will not made in anticipation of marriage for those with blended families and children. This can particularly make a rather large mess of their previously excellent planning because included within these wills are often legally binding guardianships for children which are now invalid. The most worrying trend that I have seen is where one person only is listed on the property deeds and owns it either outright or via a mortgage in their name only. Fairly recent changes to the mortgage market have made it very difficult to have two people on the property deeds and one person on the mortgage. In the event of the home owner’s death, the other partner effectively becomes homeless. To solve this it would be preferable
Page 20
to have both partners on the mortgage, life insurance in place to pay out any outstanding mortgage (written into trust for the other partner) and a will in place. As a newly married couple (with children or grandchildren) without a valid will in place if one person was to pass away the other would automatically inherit: • All personal property and belongings • The first £270,000 of the estate • Half the remaining estate Again not necessarily what you would like to happen. If you take marriage out of the equation in the above example the surviving partner would only inherit any jointly held assets and everything else would pass to their children. How can you prevent this from happening? A legally-binding will is available from as little as £99.
