INTRODUCTION Hello and a very warm welcome to your June/July edition of Doncaster Echo! How are we already nearly halfway through the year? Summer is hear and we cannot wait for BBQs with family and friends. If you are jetting off somewhere this summer, we hope you have a wonderful holiday, especially after the past two years! We hope 2022 has been a fantastic year for everyone in our community so far. We love to hear the excellent work you are doing and if you have a special someone who deserves a mention, please pop us a message so we can feature them in the next edition.

This month, we meet Doncaster couple Leah and Nat who have been fostering since December 2020, and are encouraging other members of the LGBTQ+ community to also consider fostering. We also chat to Christopher and Matthew Hough, from Town Moor in Doncaster who have recently been selected to represent Yorkshire at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. As alway, if you would like more information about how you or your business can be featured in the magazine, get in touch with a member of our friendly team who will be happy to help. We will see you again in August!

Doncaster Brothers selected to attend Scout event in South Korea Two brothers, Christopher (15) and Matthew (13) Hough, from Town Moor in Doncaster, have recently been selected to represent Yorkshire at the 25th World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. This event happens once every four years and brings together over 40,000 Scouts from countries all over the world. Out of all the Scouts in South Yorkshire, only 36 have been selected to attend and Doncaster Echo had a chat to two of them!

As part of the agreement for Christopher and Matthew to go to the Jamboree, they need to fundraise £3,800 each.

This covers participation but also contributes to a fund to support Scouts from disadvantaged areas locally and around the world so that they have the opportunity to attend. The fundraising events have

already begun and last month Doncaster Lions organised a Family Race Night event to help them with fundraising. Doncaster Echo had a chat with the two brothers to find out more. “So far, our biggest challenge has been that because we are both going, we have twice the fundraising to do, but with only one set of family and friends to support us! And our mum and dad are both public sector workers so we haven’t been able to use their “business” contacts like some of the other Scouts who are going have done. So, when we started out fundraising, it felt quite overwhelming and we did not

Page 6

Issue 020 - June/July 2022

know how to get started. We’re also the only Scouts in our Scout groups who are going, so it felt quite lonely to start with. But we have been pleased by the support we have received from local businesses, groups (like the Lions and Rotary) and people we have never even met before! We’ve had help and suggestions from lots of people and we are learning new things all the time. “We’ve also had donations of items to use as raffle/tombola prizes as well as sponsorship. The most rewarding part of the fundraising so far has been talking to lots of people about experiences that they have had of previous Jamborees or other big adventures and people who

are interested in hearing about where we are going and why. “One of the themes for the Jamboree is sustainability so wherever we can we are thinking about ways to recycle or help the environment as part of our fundraising. So we have done a clothing collection for recycling and we are collecting used print cartridges. We have also used donations of unwanted gifts and toiletries as prizes which has all saved lots of landfill. We have also done a lot of sponsored litter picking to help the local environment. “We are also taking part in the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge this month. Matthew’s Scout group are also organising a Korean Themed BBQ in July.

Matthew’s dance teacher, Miss Paige Singer from Cre8ive Dance Academy, is also running four marathons throughout the year and is sharing the money she is sponsored between us and Breast Cancer Now charity (https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/paige-singer1?utm_term=ngbpBpWyZ).” We wish Christopher and Matthew the best of luck in their fundraising efforts, and we cannot wait to hear how they get on. FROM A POLICE Action on organised crime in Edlington

“I hope activity like this illustrates that we are committed to confronting organised crime wherever we find it across Doncaster. Drug supply is often a catalyst for other serious and violent crime, which has a huge negative impact on our communities.”

Page 10

Issue 020 - June/July 2022

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, Chief Supt Ian Proffitt talks to our readers about the devastating impact that organised and violent crime has on our communities, and how tackling it remains the core focus of our specialist Fortify Team in Doncaster Last month, officers from Doncaster’s Fortify team were joined by colleagues from the Doncaster West Neighbourhood Policing Team and Tasking team, to execute three warrants simultaneously in the Edlington area of Doncaster. As a result, around one kilo of suspected class A drugs was seized, along with a number of live rounds of ammunition and a quantity of cash. A 20-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both from the Edlington area, were arrested on suspicion of the production of drugs. They were released on police bail as the investigations continue. I hope activity like this illustrates that we are committed to confronting organised crime wherever we find it across Doncaster. Drug supply is often catalyst for other serious and violent crime, which has a huge negative impact on our communities. Fortify officers are continually acting on intelligence they receive in order to be able to execute warrants like this. I would encourage anyone who has information about drug supply and production in their communities to report in via 101.

Elsewhere in the district, in recent months, as expected, we have started to see the town centre become busier again as people go out to socialise in the town’s restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs. It goes without saying that we want to see the town’s businesses thrive after what has been a difficult two years for them, and it is great to see the town centre busy again. But this does mean we have had to change things in relation to how we police the town centre during the busy weekend evenings. As a result, we have reviewed our night-time economy policing plan, doubling our presence in the town centre on Friday and Saturday nights. Thanks to this, we are starting to see a reduction in violent incidents in the town centre but I am aware there is more we can do. We are continuing to work in close partnership with licensees and the local authority to ensure that the town centre is a good place to work and visit. By working together, we can make Doncaster a better place for all.

DONCASTER COUPLE CALLS FOR OTHERS FROM LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY TO FOSTER A Doncaster couple who have been fostering since December 2020 are encouraging others to follow in their footsteps and take the first steps towards completing their family Leah and Nat, a same-sex couple who have been fostering for over 18 months, say that the young people they have cared for don’t care about your gender or your sexuality. “They just take you as you are”, says Leah. “We did have some reservations at first about what the kids would think about us, how they would react to us as a couple, but they have just seen us as Leah and Nat. We’ve cared for two teenagers during our short time fostering and the young people just want someone who will care for them, they accept our gender/ sexuality. “We always let the child take the lead on how they want to

Page 16

explain our relationship as a couple and their relationship to us to the other people in their lives. A young boy we are currently caring for says he’s our lad and we are his step parents, which makes us so happy, it is just priceless.” There are many people who still think they wouldn’t be able to foster due to their sexuality and this an unfortunate myth and something that Trust Fostering, the town’s local fostering service, want to dispel. Leah adds: “We never felt judged or nervous throughout the process of becoming foster carers, we were seen and respected as individuals. The support we’ve had as carers from the Trust Fostering team

and other carers has helped us to learn new skills and embrace our fostering journey. “Fostering is not about the money” says Nat. “The change we see in the children is so rewarding. They can sometimes come into your life withdrawn and angry, and with time your relationship just blossoms. Before long you begin to notice

Issue 020 - June/July 2022

things that make you realise you’ve become a family such as helping out with homework, watching a film together, and going on days out, generally things we wouldn’t get to enjoy if we didn’t have a child in our life. “When going into fostering be ready for anything, you will definitely get more out of

fostering than you put in.” Trust Fostering, in Doncaster, delivering on behalf of Doncaster Council. The experienced team offer extensive training throughout your fostering career as well as 24/7 for all our carers. People from all backgrounds can make great carers, regardless of

marital status, sexuality, race or religion. All that is required is at least one spare bedroom, an enthusiastic and passionate attitude and the time and patience to care for children and young people. To find out more about fostering for Doncaster visit the Trust Fostering website www.trustfostering.co.uk or call 0808 129 2600.

Doncaster’s new gym offers a unique experience

Are you looking for an innovative gym that is much different from just your standard? Built90 fitness might just be your new favourite place to work out. Complete with its own dance floor and disco lights, Built90 Fitness more closely resembles a nightclub feel rather than a traditional gym.

If you are looking for somewhere to host a sporting event or special occasion, why not consider Woodfield Squash and Leisure. Woodfield Squash and Leisure formed when Rob Waller and Matt Hudson were looking for bigger premises so they could have more squash courts. That’s when they came across an NHS building that could potentially solve all their problems. After speaking with the NHS to build around the building, they received permission and enough space perfect to fit four courts side by side. The building work started in 2015 and with a lot of hard work they finally opened to the public in 2016. The club offers: gym, a fitness/studio room, four squash courts, sauna, changing rooms, showers, sunbeds, three pool tables and a sports bar. The perfect venue for sports or holding functions. There are also a number of teams who play at the sports centre including six teams in the Sheffield and District league as well as two from the Yorkshire League.

The unique Fitness unit which is like no other is based in Doncaster and offers a variety of coached bespoke themed Fitness Events offering both high cardio and strength and conditioning events. Along with the PT sessions, boxing style 1-1 sessions, kids youth and conditioning sessions, it really is an Fitness Events centre all under the B90fitness umbrella. Michael Fraser, owner and fitness instructor, told Doncaster Echo: “I didn’t want to simply run a traditional fitness class, I wanted to create a type of experience that was closer to being part of a show. It’s a very different experience to a traditional gym.” Michael’s fitness philosophy is all about encouraging people to enjoy the time they spend exercising, enjoying the journey towards achieving their goals. The end goal is ultimately helping people to improve their quality of life, it’s not just about fitness, it’s about being part of a community.
