Doncaster Multicultural Festival
On Saturday, the 22nd of July, 10am till 6pm, Sandall Park will host the first annual Multicultural Festival
The event is a collaboration between The Friends of Sandall Park, Voluntary Action Doncaster and The Inclusion Fairness Forum.
The aim is to create a diverse multicultural festival experience for the people and communities of Doncaster. Celebrating our differences, the fun-packed day will bring our communities and individuals together to share cultural interests, skills and traditions to foster goodwill,
friendship and strengthen our community.
It’s a not-for-profit event enabled by funding grants, business sponsorship and donations.
The organisers have been working hard to create a fun, family festival which celebrates the communities and the diverse cultures of Doncaster.
The initial community feedback suggests the people of Doncaster are happy and excited to have a
festival to include their cultures, traditions and the festival ethos.
Entry to the event is free and is bound to be a fun-packed day. Visitors are welcome to bring chairs or picnic blankets to the event and make a day of it.
Sandall Park is one of Doncaster’s biggest leisure and recreational parks. There are 69 acres of beautiful scenery, walks, play areas, playing fields and a beautiful lake which serves as a
house to a host of geese, ducks and other wildlife.
The festival field is home to a large variety of delicious cultural world foods with a food court and dozens of stalls. The main stage and arena will host cultural bands and music, entertaining throughout the day.
For the children, there is a super inflatable zone, free circus workshop with Mr Dan, free children’s entertainment with
Stacy’s offering lots of fun and games, free book giveaway, stilt walkers, mascots, dancers, mini fun fair, pony rides and Zorbs.
And this is just a small selection of what you can expect to see on the day. There is also a Health and Wellbeing zone which offers free workshops and talks throughout the day. Meditation, yoga, elementals, crystal healing, Slavic gymnastics, and men’s health workshops are already confirmed with more to come.
The Craft marquee offers free craft workshops throughout the day and stalls selling handcrafted products.
Plus the Bazaar Marquee will house an eclectic mix of stalls. If you are interested in having a stall or would like to volunteer as a marshal, please get in touch with ceri@ voluntaryactiondoncaster.org. uk or sandallparksecretary@ gmail.com
FROM A POLICE
Day of action in Bentley
This month, Doncaster Policing Team talk to us about a typical day for officers in the North team
“We all need to work together to make our communities the great places to live and work that everyone deserves and these days of action are great examples of that partnership working in action.”
PERSPECTIVE:
Officers from the Doncaster North Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) were joined by specialist teams from around the force and local partners for a dedicated day of action recently. The day started with the execution of a drugs warrant at a property on Bentley Road. Officers discovered 71 cannabis plants, with a street value of around £71,000 inside. A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation and possession of a class A drug. He was released on police bail pending further enquiries.
A further two people were arrested throughout the day. A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and a second man was arrested for failing to appear at court.
A van that was spotted driving along York Road with an insecure load was taken to the mobile enforcement site. The driver was wanted for questioning by Doncaster Council’s Enforcement Team and was given a £400 fine for fly tipping last month. The van was seized for having no tax and the driver was given a traffic offence report for having an insecure load and given a ticket for failing to secure a child in a car seat.
Four other vehicles were seized – two for having no insurance, one for having no MOT and one which was on false registration plates after
being stolen. A further two vehicles were given prohibition notices and seven received advice notices due to the condition of the vehicles. Speeding operations were carried out on Watch House Lane, Jossey Lane, Askern Road and the A19 at Toll Bar, with 15 letters issued to speeding motorists. As well as enforcement, the teams were also busy engaging with the local community with a pop-up police station, activities with local school children and patrols from our mounted section.
PC Karen Stebel, who led the operation, said: “We all need to work together to make our communities the great places to live and work that everyone deserves and these days of action are great examples of that partnership working in action.
“Our activity to tackle concerns in the area does not stop there, and we will keep you updated on our future days of action and our ongoing work.”
Doncaster North NPT was launched in January this year and serves the Adwick, Askern, Roman Ridge, Bentley and Sprotbrough ward areas of Doncaster.
To keep up to date with news from those areas, follow the team on Facebook and Twitter.
Doncaster Squash Club to compete in Yorkshire squash competition
Doncaster Squash Club are extremely proud to have recently secured a second year in the hugely competitive, professional Yorkshire Premier League of Squash
It’s a great accolade for a club in Doncaster and leads to several great opportunities, usually given to the more prestigious teams such as Sheffield Lawn Tennis and Racquets Club, Queens in Hull and the legendary Pontefract. But where did Doncaster Squash Club start and why?
Doncaster Squash Club is one of the older ones in the Doncaster area and has been about since the 1970s. At one point the club was small but booming and attracted some great competition and players. However, with the decline of the sport in the late 90s the private enterprise dwindled and the member base grew older as the club did. Although still boasting two competitive teams in Yorkshire and S and D leagues and attracting local national level players and master’s players, the sport and club dropped off the Doncaster sporting scene.
The Club remained open and ticking along as a private member’s club until about 2015/16 when again numbers dropped. It wasn’t until 2017 when
two local men, David Cooke and Les Close, got together and looked to transform the club and the sport (firstly), but also to support young athletes in the area and create a community hub and a professional squash team with internationally ranked young players from across the globe; including our very own Yorkshire. Dave’s interest came from a performance and fitness perspective, with him already running a sports performance centre and gym offering everything from wellness to athletic performance. Dave had left the Army as a commissioned officer in 2014 and was forging his new career.
Les’s interest came from a desire to help youngsters and Doncaster people get on in life and, in particular, promote the sport he loved and has been involved in for over 50 years. Les’s passion for helping people and creating opportunities and Dave’s desire to coach to afford people the opportunity to be their best, lent themselves well to becoming and forming a Community Interest Company and creating a community centre for health and wellness, open to all, focussed around squash.
There are also opportunities to help closer to home and the pair have created opportunities for long-term members and team players to take their own sport forward and develop themselves as well as give back. They have funded coaching courses, spinning and fitness qualifications and refereeing courses, and the ability to create the opportunity for others to share their passions is one that is relished
and is an important milestone for the club and the community.
The last two seasons since Covid have seen Dave, Les and the Squash community really push the sport and promote the unique opportunities within.
Doncaster Squash Club are already making great steps, having recently hosted Doncaster’s first ever “3k” PSA Squash Tournament, an event usually hosted by much more well-known and established clubs. However, they stood proud and hosted the strongest teams for many years, seeing 16 world ranked athletes come to the club and high volumes of streaming on Squash TV. This is only the start of what it wants to deliver, and they hope you can see
that this is an exciting time to get involved. In May we also hosted a PSA satellite tournament which saw another 16 world class athletes coming to Doncaster to compete.
In contracting players and securing events, the club will continue to resource this and ensure they can fund every opportunity presented, but that’s not all! The mission is to want to develop a club which opens squash to all, not limiting on age, ability or status and continue to place Doncaster on the map for the sport. With the success in the recent Commonwealth Games, this will offer opportunities to many young people and give them a safe and encouraging space to perform and train.
