FROM A POLICE
Local officer honoured with long service award
South Yorkshire Police’s long service awards recognise employees who have more than 20 years’ service under their belts
“Paul retired as a police officer in 2015 after 41 years’ service, but returned the very next day as a Special Constable. He has volunteered his time ever since to continue serving the communities of South Yorkshire.”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
Around 50 people were recognised at the latest awards ceremony on Tuesday 23rd April, at a special event which coincides with the force’s 50th anniversary year.
Officers and staff from across the force’s districts and departments were honoured at the event and presented with medals from the Lord Lieutenant, for service totalling a staggering 990 years between them.
Special Constable Paul Brown, 69, was among those present and honoured for his milestone 50-year career with the police, more than 40 of which he has spent in the mounted unit. He was the longest-serving employee at the ceremony, and vintage police cars and motorbikes from Sheffield’s National Emergency Services Museum, and two mounted officers, greeted attendees in a special nod to Paul’s long career.
Paul joined the then Sheffield and Rotherham Constabulary as a cadet in 1973, a few months before South Yorkshire Police was founded in April 1974. Originally, he had planned to follow his school friends into teacher training, but when his grandfather showed him a recruitment advert in the Sheffield Star for policing, he decided to try out. Paul was 18 at the time and the force was only taking on recruits aged 19 or over. They made an exception for him after he impressed at interview, making him a cadet.
After a few years as a beat cop, and a few more working in the control room because of his love of newly emerging computer technology, Paul found his way to Penistone, South Yorkshire, where, in 1981, he met an officer at a local pub who had just joined the mounted section. After a natter over a pint, Paul decided to try out for the section, where he would stay for more than four decades.
He adds: “The nearest thing I had got to horse riding before that was a donkey at Blackpool beach. It was frightening, my first time on a horse, but I took to it like a duck to water.”
Over his time as a mounted officer Paul has collected his fair share of battle wounds – ‘two broken fingers, a fractured ankle, a couple of broken ribs, and a broken arm during public order training’ - but his most serious injuries have come outside working hours. When out on a hike with his daughter three years ago, Paul was thrown from his horse and was attended to by air ambulance as he had lost all feeling from his neck down. Paul recalls: “I thought, this is it, wheelchair.” Thankfully, Paul fully recovered in hospital and within six weeks of the accident he was back in the saddle working at a football match.
Paul retired as a police officer in 2015 after 41 years’ service, but returned the very next day as a Special Constable. He has volunteered his time ever since to continue serving the communities of South Yorkshire.
After 50 years with the police, Paul is finally, begrudgingly, looking towards retirement. He previously owned retired police horses and currently owns two non-police horses, so he won’t be entirely letting go of the reins just yet, but is planning to leave the force for good this year. However, he admits: “I’ve said that for the last nine years.”
The strangest part of Paul’s story is that despite working as a mounted officer for 42 years, competing in equestrian competitions across the world, from America, to the UAE, to South Africa, and being married to fellow mounted officer, Tracey, for 22 years, Paul admits that before joining the mounted section, he had no interest in horses whatsoever.
And so, the ad in the local paper that pushed him towards a life on horseback rather than at the front of a classroom was more significant than the 18-year-old high school graduate and his grandfather could have known. And perhaps it’s not hard to see why Paul has no regrets about the path he chose.

Local couple competing in numerous challenges throughout the year all in the aid of charity
Husband and wife duo Niall and Jess Doyle from Tickhill are set to tackle four events throughout the year to raise money for Firefly Cancer Awareness
Niall, 32, and Jess, 30 have been together since school, married six years, and share two children, Felix, three, and Delilah, one, and over the years their lives have been hugely affected indirectly by cancer with several family members battling the illness.
Niall told Doncaster Echo: “In 2011, after several battles with breast cancer, my mother Anne, lost her final battle. In October last year, after his own previous battles with cancer, my father, Martin, also was diagnosed with terminal cancer - given only a 50% chance he will make it passed six to nine months. He’s still here and fighting
strong bless him.
“Jess’ father, Barry, also had his own battle with cancer last year, needing a major operation to save his life and is still in recovery, but doing well and last but not least, Jess’ grandad, Derek, also had to have a major operation and therapy several years ago to battle cancer and thankfully came out on top.”
Both Niall and Jess set themselves a challenge to raise awareness and fundraise for Firefly Cancer Awareness – and they certainly don’t do things by halves. They have already completed The 3 Yorkshire Peaks back in May, and they have a further three events to tackle:-
The Great North Swim Run
Saturday 8th June
Half Marathon
Sunday 21st July
Full Marathon
Sunday 6th October
The duo are currently in training for these events, both attending Accelerate Coaching based in Doncaster. Jess currently has an insured knee so won’t be able to take part in the half marathon but is hoping to be fit for the full marathon in October.
Firefly Cancer Awareness provides free transport to the people in the borough of Doncaster who require cancer treatment. Firefly is a nonprofit charity, and every penny goes directly back in to keeping
their fleet of vehicles on the road. Their dedicated team will support and help hopefully take away the stress and financial implications.
Would you you like to join Niall and Jess in making a difference? Every donation helps, no matter how big or small. You can support the duo and donate via their GoFundMe page - www. gofundme.com/f/pleasedonate-to-help-fireflycancer-support
