A young boy from Doncaster has seen his efforts with the junior rangers rewarded as he came second in the competition to win a Civic Mayor’s Award Archie Wright, was nominated for the young people’s Community Award, coming second on the night after being in competition with 90 other young people from Doncaster.

The nine-year-old has been recognised for his continuous good work across Sandall Park with the Doncaster junior rangers. Passionate about both the park and the community, Archie has been described as an inspiration to all the other rangers. Following his achievements, we spoke to Archie to see how the award came around and learn some more about his good work. “I actually came home from school one day and saw a brown envelope addressed to me, me and my mum did not have a clue what it was! Inside was a formal invite to the Mansion House as I had been shortlisted for a Civic Mayor Award. “I am very proud of myself and I know everyone around me is too. On the night when my name didn’t get called out for first place I didn’t really feel disappointed because I think everyone deserves a chance

to feel like a winner. It was only last year I was the only one to pick up two awards at the Free Press Superkids Awards.”

Archie’s mum Rosie also spoke to us, saying Archie’s confidence and personality have grown so much. Following his kind gestures and good work, Rosie suggested it makes her feel like “she has done something right along the way”. “He is so passionate when it comes to the park and the community. If he is needed he is there, from planting new plants to running a full stall on his own. The confidence and his general personality have just grown so much. I am beyond proud of him, he makes me feel like I have done something right along the way. With him training up other junior rangers, I can’t wait for other mums to feel as proud as I do.” Ever since he was young Archie has always loved being involved with the junior scouts. He was always keen to put on a high-vis and help out wherever he could,

according to his mum. “When he first started around three years ago, he would go down to the park and meet with my Auntie Carin who volunteers herself. He would do odd jobs from planting new plants, painting benches, litter picking or just watering all the eye-catching flowers. Archie would put his high-vis on like it was his new uniform and jump out the car like he was being dropped off at work.” Archie also told us he would not have been in the running

for the award if it weren’t for a few people giving him a helping hand throughout the way. “I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my Great Auntie Carin, Sandra Crabtree, Les Jones and all the support from the rest of the amazing Friends of Sandall Park team that work so hard no matter the weather.” From everyone at the Doncaster Echo, well done to Archie – keep up the good work!

DN COLLEGES GROUP RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARD DN Colleges Group has picked up a prestigious national award as they were voted the best Further Education College at the Student Choice awards 2019 The DN group consists of North Lindsey College and Doncaster College, following the two merging together on 1st November 2017.

the best in the UK is indeed the highest level of recognition possible.

The national awards are an annual celebration of the best universities and higher education institutions in the UK. Voted for by students based on their experience, the award is held in high prestige for the eventual winners.

“There were 10 nominations in our category and many more applications, so the competition was incredibly tough. As the runner-up last year and the winner this year, we give so many congratulations to all our students and staff at our University Centres for such a well-deserved achievement.”

After coming second in 2018, DN Colleges Group were winners this year. We spoke to Chief Executive Officer of DN Colleges, Anne Tyrrell, who told us to be named winner is a “fantastic achievement”.

The college prides itself on offering a wide range of further education courses, both vocational and academic. There are also great apprenticeship opportunities and progression routes into Higher Education.

“This is an award wholly based on student reviews of their experience, so to be the national winner is just such a fantastic achievement.”

Off the back of the award, Steven Johnstone, Director of Higher Education said: “To win the award this year, off the back of being runners-up in 2018, demonstrates the consistent quality of learning experience that we offer at DN Colleges Group.”

“The award recognises the most supportive and engaging learning environment for degree level courses. To be recognised by our students as

Doncaster teen youngest ever fi A 19-year-old from Bessacarr has qualified to become an independent financial adviser, making him one of the youngest in the country Ben Butcher of Ideal Finance Management started his studies when he was just 17, gaining the necessary qualifications at a finance school in Manchester. Since then, Ben has passed his final exam in London to gain the financial adviser title – making him one of the youngest in the UK. Following his time at Hall Cross Academy, Ben decided not to go down the university route despite many others his age heading in that direction. Speaking to the Doncaster Echo, Ben told us university wasn’t for him, as he was more keen to learn whilst having an income behind him.

Page 14

“I began at Hall Cross Academy, and continued through to the sixth form there. I found the second part of the year at sixth form began to focus on university; however I knew I did not want to do that. I felt I could do more with my time with an income behind me whilst learning. “After choosing not to go to university, I took on an apprenticeship for 18 months to qualify as a mortgage adviser. In February 2018, I was put on to another course after qualifying. This was the Advanced Finance Advisor (AFA) qualification - which trained me to advise on pensions and investments.”

nager becomes financial adviser Ben recently passed his final AFA exam, ensuring he received a diploma in financial planning. Following his achievements, he will continue to work at Ideal Finance Management assisting those with financial concerns or targets.

‘kick’ and is something he enjoys doing on a daily basis. Ben was also keen to thank directors at the company, father Brian Butcher and Dave Patrickson, who have helped him on his path to achieving the diploma.

Following Ben’s good work, it was also quickly noticed that alongside a handful of others across the UK, he was one of the youngest to receive a diploma in financial planning.

“I have always taken a strong interest in business; there is something exciting about it to me. There are a number of things you can achieve, so I have always been drawn to that side of life. I really get a kick out of what I do, helping others and giving someone a meaningful service.

“When I first started the Advance Finance Adviser course, I was sat amongst a number of people who I realised were mid-twenties. I spoke to a couple of the trainers there, and they all said I was definitely the youngest to take on the course.” “After doing some research, we found out that there was one more boy who has achieved the feat, and another two girls in Scotland!” A life-long dream of Ben’s to work in a business capacity, he said his current role gives him a

“I must also mention Brian and Dave, who are the directors at Ideal Finance Management. I have worked closely with Brian, he is the one who has helped me and pointed me in the right direction, which of course I really appreciate. I have also worked closely with Liane Patrickson, 28, who is Dave’s daughter. We both qualified from the same course, and will continue to work with one another.”

Fitness expert Naomi Silvester from Strong 21 gives us her top three tips when working towards weight loss

Back to basics Everywhere I look, I see this diet, that skinny tea, these fat burners or some other, apparently magical aid to weight loss. I do not doubt the effectiveness of some of the products available, and I do believe that if something will help encourage a person to improve their lifestyle, then do it! However, long-term, long-lasting change doesn’t come in a bottle. We have to make small changes daily to see those big changes for good and the easiest way is to take it all back to basics and keep it simple. Keep hydrated! Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to turn up your fat-burning capacity as even a mildly dehydrated body won’t burn fat easily. The brain doesn’t always distinguish between hunger and thirst. Try drinking a glass of water first before reaching for something tasty.

Page 18

Try upping your protein intake. Protein is the building block for every cell in your body and essential for fat loss! It is widely available in many foods such as meat, fish, eggs, cheese, oats, quinoa, Greek yoghurt, tofu, soya beans or a good quality whey protein shake. A high protein intake boosts metabolism, reduces appetite and helps regulate the hormones that affect weight! Move it to lose it - exercise is by far the best way to shed unwanted pounds, up your daily steps, take the stairs where possible or even park further away from the shop door to increase your daily activity and burn a few extra calories. If you try these three basic steps you’ll see how you can make those positive changes and promote a healthier you. For more information check out Strong21 Training on Facebook and Instagram.

Get all your legal questions answered

Please mention Doncaster Echo when calling advertisers

Our friends at Taylor Bracewell are back again to answer all your legal questions. If you have any legal enquiries or concerns, be sure to email us at sales@createtvt.co.uk to have your question expertly answered I’ve been at a company now for nine years. I am 63 and in this time I have seen two new starters get promoted (within the last two years). I am happy for them, but my manager says head office do not want to promote me due to my age and the fact I will be retiring in the coming years. It is also because I’ll get a higher retirement package. Is this age discrimination? An employee can bring a claim under the Equality Act 2010 for discrimination if they have been treated unfairly, or if they have been denied an opportunity such as a promotion because of their age, unless it can be objectively justified. The Employment Appeals Tribunal have ruled that the wish to save money alone is not a legitimate aim to justify discrimination. This type of discrimination requires a comparison with colleagues who have the same characteristics as you but are of a different age, to show that you have been disadvantaged because of your age. If you cannot resolve the matter informally, it is advisable to raise an internal grievance using your employer’s grievance procedure. Your employer should investigate your concerns and arrange a meeting with you to discuss. If you are not happy with the outcome, you can bring a claim in the Employment Tribunal whilst you are still employed, provided that the claim is issued within three months less one day from the date of the alleged discriminatory act.

Page 20

At the office Christmas party, my boss told me he has a ‘thing’ for me. Since then it has been really awkward in the office, he has moved me to another department and this upset me. I haven’t done anything wrong and really loved the department I was in. Do I have any rights to request to go back? Sexual harassment occurs when someone engages in unwanted conduct of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive environment. This of course is an issue which should be treated very seriously, however it can sometimes be difficult to classify. There is no single definition for sexual harassment as the test is subjective and considers how the treatment made the recipient feel. It can include a range of actions from ‘mild transgressions to sexual abuse or assault’ and can occur in areas such as the workplace. The Equality Act 2010 also protects employees who have been treated less favorably because they rejected this conduct. You should raise a formal grievance and as part of the desired outcome ask to be moved back to your old department. If the matter does not get resolved, you have three months less one day from the date of the alleged act to make a claim in an Employment Tribunal. For more of your legal questions answered by Taylor Bracewell, visit the Doncaster Echo website.

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills discusses some key things to consider when putting a legal guardianship in place

Guardians – how to make the right decisions! One of the most frequent reasons for those with children to make a will is to put a legal guardianship in place, to ensure their children are looked after by friends or a family member of their choice. This is often the biggest conversation we have during a will meeting. Key factors to consider are: 1. Location – research has shown that children benefit from being able to keep their life as close to the same as possible. 2. Relationship – who do your children know that they would feel comfortable with. 3. Financially – who do you know that would cope financially with additional children entering their life? As part of the process we also look at putting insurance into place

Page 22

which would cover additional costs in the form of an income. This is often a low-cost solution to the financial issues. 4. Age of guardians – this is a fine balancing act when taking into account the importance of the relationship children have, especially with grandparents. It is estimated that 41,000 children lose a parent each year, many parents do not realise that in the absence of a legal guardianship (generally written within a will.) It is the job of the courts to appoint a legal guardian this is not an instance process and until this decision is made it becomes the role of social services to provide care for orphaned children. Due to the importance of legal guardianships at D&K wills and estate planning we include free guardianships within all of our wills.

Doncaster event management team scoops three awards

An event management team in Doncaster has picked up three awards for their outstanding organised runs aimed at local athletes Curly’s Athletes, based in Doncaster, received two regional awards and one national award, in what is just their second year in operation. The group were awarded with the best 5k and best 10k in Yorkshire, and also picked up a bronze medal in the national awards for their 5k run. The group aims to deliver high-quality running and cycling events for the general public, as well as offering a number of other services including supporting charitable causes and connecting the community the best they can through sport. Following their awards, Jonathan from Curly’s spoke to the Doncaster Echo to talk us through how the accolades came around and what the awards mean to the team.

“Of course we are chuffed; we have had the best 5k and 10k in Yorkshire for the last two years running, which is really special. We have not even been running for three years yet, so it obviously means a lot. The award was voted for by runners, so for us that probably means more than anything.” On their way to picking up the awards, Curly’s competed against a number of much larger event management organisations, a credit to the group’s work. Jonathan added the award was ‘very special’ given the size of Curly’s competitors. “We are not the biggest organisers by any stretch of the imagination, and we were up against some of the large national events, so it was very special.” Aside from organising a number of events across the calendar, the group aims to go one step

further. Getting the community involved and inspiring locals to get active is something that Curly’s prioritise, as Jonathan explains. “We aim to help provide a point of inspiration to get people more physically active, that is the purpose of our events. We are trying to provide an Everest for everyone. Whether that is a mile a day or a 10k run, we know people will perform better when they are working towards a goal rather than just been told to lose weight, for example. “We like to believe everyone is an athlete, it is just about setting a goal then going out and achieving it. Our events are up and down the performance scale, we have some strong runners and of course it is great to see them hitting PBs. At the other end of the scale, we have events for people who are running for the very first time.

“What we do is incredibly rewarding and seeing all our positive feedback is a reason to go through all the work that we do.” With Curly’s placing high importance on community cohesion, the group are also hoping to bring together the streets of Rossington in an upcoming event. “We have a half marathon going through Rossington soon, and we realise not everyone will be able to physically do this. What we do know is that we will be taking it past people’s houses so you can come out, cheer us on and connect with your neighbours, while encourage the runners on their way past.” From everyone at the Doncaster Echo, well done to those at Curly’s.
