Doncaster Youth Voice: Children and Young People “Making Doncaster the most Child-Friendly Borough in the country” Doncaster Council established the Children and Young People’s Plan to become the most child friendly borough in the country. Collectively, with support from Doncaster Council, Doncaster Schools, Doncaster Children’s Trust, St Leger Homes, South Yorkshire Police and the NHS, £364million was spent on Children and Young People in 2015/16. There are approximately 65,000 children and young people in Doncaster under the age of 18, and the four themes established to enhance their lives are ‘safe, healthy and happy, achievement and equality’.

Page 4

Doncaster Youth Council is a constituted diverse group of local young people aged 1119, who campaign to ensure the voices of young people in Doncaster are heard. It works to ensure young people have a say in the decisions that are made within Doncaster.

Doncaster Youth Council works with South Yorkshire Police to campaign against knife crime. The Youth Council also comprises two Members of Youth Parliament who

represent Doncaster every year at the House of Commons. In last year’s ‘Make Your Mark’ campaign, knife crime was voted in the top three as a national priority for young people. As a result, Doncaster Youth Council is working with South Yorkshire Police to tackle this as their first piece of work. It is holding focus groups with young people in all secondary schools and colleges across the borough, where it is leading peer-to-peer consultations in order to identify young people’s perception of knife crime, what triggers their fears, and why they might deem it a priority for Doncaster when there has

been a 12% decrease in the past year. Doncaster Council have recently undergone a successful recruitment campaign to employ a number of Young Advisors aged 16-24 to bring unique expertise and knowledge about being young to influence strategic planning, decision-making and marketing within Doncaster’s Young People’s services. The newly formed team of eight will help organisations and local services improve their products and delivery to make them more young-people friendly and will use a variety of methods to ensure that young

people are given the chance to be meaningfully involved in service design, delivery and evaluation. Children deserve to have their voices heard, and the team has been working to make Doncaster the most child friendly borough in the Country! We recognise that historically we tend to approach our Youth when it comes to ‘voice’, but we believe that our children also deserve to have their voices heard. The team have been working hard to establish a number of exciting projects, specifically for our Doncaster children. We will

soon have a Junior Civic Mayor, who will represent all children in Doncaster and will serve a term of office alongside our Civic Mayor. “Our teams have recovered quantities of drugs, including spice and cannabis, from a number of properties, and several people have been arrested in connection with this.

E PERSPECTIVE:

ncaster Safe August has been a busy month for the Doncaster Central Neighbourhood Policing Team, who have been focusing on tackling antisocial behaviour, drug use, burglary and improving police visibility in your area.

they get school children involved to help.

We’ve seen some really positive results over the last month in the central area. Our teams have recovered quantities of drugs, including spice and cannabis, from a number of properties, and several people have been arrested in connection to this.

In addition, we’ve been focusing on concerns around begging in the town centre, working with the council to move people on, issue dispersal notices and direct them to any support they may need.

We find this works really well in terms of educating and informing drivers of the speed limit and dangers of speeding. Over the last month, hundreds of vehicles have been checked.

In one instance, in the Wheatley area, 250 cannabis plants were seized. We know the negative and often devastating impact drugs can have on a community, which is why we are committed to tackling the supply and distribution of them.

This forms part of our high-visibility patrol plan, not just in the town centre, but across every area we cover. We want you to see us around and know that we’re here, should you need to speak to anyone about crime in your area. These patrol plans also act as a deterrent for antisocial behaviour.”

We’ve also had positive feedback from the local community around speeding operations our PCSOs have been carrying out. They regularly conduct speed gun checks on various roads where we know speeding is an issue, and often

Volunteers recognised at highest level Rossington Hall Group Riding for the Disabled in Doncaster has been named as a recipient of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the UK’s highest accolade for such services The award recognises the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups of volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others, improving the quality of life and opportunity for citizens.

The group told the Doncaster Echo: “We are very proud that our volunteers have received this award. It means so much to have their dedication and hard work recognised at the highest level. Without our team of volunteers, the group would not exist.”

Rossington Hall Group was founded in 1987 starting with just four volunteers and one horse. In subsequent years the group has flourished and now has 43 volunteers, 10 horses and offers, on average 250 rides per month.

The award, known as the MBE for volunteering groups, will be presented to the group at a celebration event later the year by Andrew Coombe, HM Lord-Lieutenant for South Yorkshire.

The volunteers who allow this group to operate are an incredible team who work alongside each other and with the riders to ensure they have the best possible experience and opportunity to develop their physical and social skills.

He said “I am delighted that the Rossington Hall Group Riding for the Disabled, providing support and services to those in need in our county have been awarded the highly prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.”

Doncaster Sheffield voted the UK’s Best Airport by Which? Magazine three years in a row It’s a hat-trick for Doncaster Sheffield Airport (DSA) who are celebrating topping the Which? Magazine Best and Worst UK Airports survey for the third time – and its fifth appearance in the top five. The survey measured 6,237 separate airport experiences and commented that ‘a staggering 97% of its passengers would recommend Doncaster Sheffield, praising its personable and helpful staff’.

Other areas to note were ‘accessible parking (rated favourably by respondents) coupled with short queuing time in security and quick passport control queues to create a stress-free journey.’ Robert Hough, Chairman of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, said: “We’re proud to be judged the UK and the North’s best airport. This is great recognition of the exceptional customer service offered by every single member of the team. We have always set out to deliver a top-class passenger experience that people can’t

get at any other airport. Lengthy queues, disruption and hassle are not what people should experience when at an airport.” The poll cemented DSA as Yorkshire’s favourite airport, scoring 86% overall. DSA received five-star ratings for queues at security and passport control and a fourstar rating for staff, seating and loos. The Which? Award comes on the back of another great year with passenger numbers predicted to grow to 1.45 million in 2019/20, with more new destinations for any

UK airport since August 2018, including two new long-haul destinations – Sanford, Florida and Cancun, Mexico.

counterparts with seamless security checks and friendly staff making the biggest impression with flyers.

A leading global airport passenger service and benchmarkking service, The Airport Council International’s Airport Service Quality survey, recently rated DSA as the best UK airport, and it has been in the top 10 European airports for the last year.

“So if you have the luxury of choice when it comes to which airport you fly from, choose Doncaster Sheffield over Leeds Bradford.”

Which? Travel’s Naomi Leach said: “It is clear that smaller airports are generally outperforming their larger

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks us through the meaning of a Lasting Power of Attorney

I am too young to need an Lasting Power of Attorney I hear all too often when discussing Will and Estate Planning with clients. People think they know when they need a Lasting Power of Attorney, but actually they can be used in a number of instances. If you are unsure what a Lasting Power of Attorney is, essentially it allows someone (or several people) that you have nominated to act as on your behalf, as if they were you, if you are unable to or unwilling (provided it is set up this way). Lasting Powers of Attorney are for use while you are alive rather than a Will which is for when you have passed. They come in two varieties: 1. Health and Welfare – this is to be used when you have lost capacity and allows someone else to make decisions about the health care you receive.

Page 14

2. Property and Finance – allows someone to manage your property and money as if they were you. This can be very useful for someone who is abroad as well as for those who have lost capacity. They can also be made very specific and set up for business owners to allow business partners to make decisions rather than other family members. Why do people wait? We always associate the need for a Lasting Power of Attorney with dementia or for those who have suffered a stroke, both of which, in general, are for those who are older and coming to the end of their life. However, they can also be used for those who have had a head injury due to an accident and are classed as having lost capacity or for those with mental health difficulties who would like someone else to manage their money. If you would like to know more on this topic, please get in touch for some helpful advice.

Our friends over at Taylor Bracewell are back again answering all your legal questions. If you have any legal enquires or concerns, please email us at sales@createtvt.co.uk to receive expert help free of charge I tripped up over a broken pavement slab in town recently. I tried contacting the council but they ignored me, even though the slab was replaced! I injured my hand during this and cannot drive to work at the moment. How would I pursue a claim? The first step in pursuing a claim would be to make an appointment for an initial interview with one of our personal injury lawyers. This interview could take place on the telephone or in person. There would be no charge for this initial discussion. Our personal injury team is located at our Railway Court Office and the telephone number is (01302) 360060. Please ask to speak to Robert Clark. We can then advise you on next the next step. I hate my name. Legally how do I change this? This is a matter which can be dealt with easily and quickly by our family team. The document required is a Change Of Name Deed and you will be given a fixed fee for this piece of work. Work paid for me to go on a sales course. It cost around £400, but I have decided now to move companies after being offered more money. They are now saying I owe them for the sales course. Is this true? This will depend upon whether you have signed

Page 16

an agreement to repay training fees or not. Such an agreement may be contained within your employment contract or may have been included by your employer as part of authorising you to go on the course. Initially I would get in touch with you employer and request to be shown any signed agreement regarding repayment of these fees. If your employer cannot do so, then you cannot be required to repay the fees. I have an allergy to gluten. I told the restaurant where I was eating and they assured me I was ordering a gluten-free steak pie. After eating the food I became really unwell, and had to be taken to the hospital. They told me I had eaten gluten and that I had a small allergic reaction. I’m unhappy as I had to have the next few days off work until I felt better when this could have been prevented. The doctor told me I was lucky that it wasn’t worse! How would I start legal proceedings? The first step in pursuing a claim would be to make an appointment for an initial interview with one of our personal injury lawyers who can run through everything with you in more detail and talk through your options. This interview could take place on the telephone or in person. There would be no charge for this initial discussion.
