FROM A POLICE

A BETTER D This month, Doncaster’s District Commander, Chief Superintendent Melanie Palin, talks to our readers about working together to achieve a better Doncaster for all

‘I am aware that the relaxing of restrictions has highlighted some negative issues in the town centre, particularly around anti-social behaviour, homelessness, aggressive begging and drug use.’

E PERSPECTIVE:

DONCASTER As life continues to return to normal, we have seen more people making the return to their workplaces and visiting the town centre again.

It has been fantastic to see more people out and about, enjoying what our town has to offer and supporting local businesses after what has been a very difficult 18 months for all of us. But I am also aware that the relaxing of restrictions has highlighted some negative issues in the town centre, particularly around anti-social behaviour, homelessness, aggressive begging and drug use. This type of activity makes people feel both uncomfortable and unsafe. We are working hard with a number of our partners in the town to tackle each of these issues. My teams are carrying out regular, targeted patrols in areas of concern and joint operations with our partners at Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council are also taking place. There is lots of work planned over the coming weeks and months, including increased high visibility patrols, which should hopefully start to make a real noticeable difference.

Targeted work in the town centre does not mean that work stops in the rest of Doncaster.

My neighbourhood teams will be out and about as usual, tackling the issues that you have told us are a priority in your communities. If you have any particular concerns, I would urge you to please raise them with officers when you see them out and about – they are there to help and are always happy to listen and offer advice. An added bonus of restrictions easing has been the reintroduction of pop-up police stations and engagement events across the town. It is great to finally be able to get out and meet with people face to face again. You can find out when the next one nearest to you is taking place by visiting our website at www.southyorks.police.uk or following your local team on social media. If we all work together, we can ensure that Doncaster is the safe and welcoming town that we all want to live and work in. A Doncaster that we can all be proud to be a part of.

Miss Doncaster finds comfort in project in bid for Miss Great Bri Emma Garbutt, a country music artist born and raised in Doncaster, was named Miss Doncaster GB in October last year after losing her music work due to the Covid-19 pandemic In September 2020 she had been successful in securing the regional title and would compete for the coveted national ‘Miss Great Britain’ title in 2021, a moment she shared with her best friend Luke. Unfortunately, Luke passed away in January after a battle with bone cancer. Doncaster Echo had a chat with Emma to find out more about her and her journey to where she finds herself today. What charity project do you run? I run a charity project called The Kindness Drive. I lost my best friend Luke to a rare form of bone cancer in January this year. When he was sick he was often taken on to the teenage cancer ward in Sheffield or Leeds, even when he wasn’t a teenager any more! I know that sometimes when he was taken into hospital he worried about asking people to bring him things, he often felt like it took away some of his independence and often said he felt like a burden (which he obviously never was!) Who does it aim to help? After Luke passed away I wanted to do something to help the people that had helped him and to make the lives of people going through the same thing as him a little bit more comfortable. I decided to start collecting hygiene products to donate to the teenage cancer ward in Sheffield for their patients to be able to use should they need them, to give them back some independence. I quickly realised that people really wanted to

Page 8

help, I’m now collecting for nine wards around Yorkshire and currently have enough to keep them going for a long time! I collect anything that might make a patient’s life more comfortable from shower gel to chewing gum to moisturiser. What fundraising projects do you have planned? I am competing in Miss Great Britain representing Doncaster. This has given me such a huge platform, the press I’ve received has given me the opportunity to reach so many more people, and we have had such a huge uptake in people wanting to donate. We actively talk about The Kindness Drive across social media and we’re so lucky that the other Miss Great Britain contestants have really taken us under their wing and campaign for us too. How much money have you raised so far? We have raised thousands of pounds for the Teenage Cancer Trust but we mostly collect donations in kind. We currently have enough products to keep nine wards stocked for a good few months! How can people donate? People can donate by finding us on social media @thekindnessdrive. They can either pop us a message or they can purchase things directly from the Amazon wishlist to be sent straight to us!. The Miss Great Britain finals took place in Leicester after we went to print with this edition, on September 16th and 17th. Good luck.

Doncaster beauty queen wins Ms Diam

and aims to win international competit You may remember back in December last year we had a chat with Charlie Lister, Ms Diamond South Yorkshire, from Doncaster, about her upcoming plans We are delighted to announce the beauty queen now has the chance to represent South Yorkshire overseas in Las Vegas at the finals of Ms Diamond UK after winning Ms Diamond UK! Since joining Ms Diamond she has worked hard to raise awareness of her platform, making over 600 appearances and has raised over £2,600 for various charities. She has also created an online international magazine called Crowns and Sashes as a way to fundraise for the Samaritans. She has now won the title of Ms Diamond UK meaning she will be representing the UK in Vegas next year at the International Pageant Regency International where she will be competing for Ms Regency International. We had a catch-up with Charlie to find out more about her future plans. Charlie said: “During 2019 I was taking part in charity fun runs for various charities, arranging charity days in my work place, volunteering at my local children’s hospice and I also did a bungee jump to raise money for charity. But lockdowns put a stop to all this so in Lockdown 1 I created my pageant lockdown blog where I interviewed 150 queens from across the world as well as taking part in virtual events to continue my fundraising efforts. Then during lockdown 2, in my spare time I decided to strengthen the knowledge of my pageant platform by completing two level 2 college courses in End of Life Care and Understanding Cancer Support. I then got

Page 12

the college bug and completed a number of courses in digital skills. This then lead me to create Crowns and Sashes Magazine as a way to not only continue to share Queens journeys but as a way to fundraise for the Samaritans! Eight issues have been released and over £1,700 raised and it’s going to continue and keep growing. The way the magazine raises money is by asking for a £2 donation to be featured and a £5 donation to enter the front cover competition which is then judged by different pageant queens and experts each month. When the first edition was released, it was UK only but now we have featured women from America, Canada, Greece and even Cuba. It’s become that big I had to get a team to help me with social media and filmed interviews which again a £2 donation is required. In the future I want Crowns and Sashes to be one of the biggest pageant media outlets so there are plans for a podcast, mentor programme for the future pageant contestants in the UK as well as an awards night. At the end of August 2021 my time finally came to stand on that stage and represent South Yorkshire and I’m overwhelmed to say that I won the title of Ms Diamond UK which means that I will be heading to Las Vegas in 2022 to represent the UK. in an international pageant called Regency International where I will be competing for the title of Ms Regency International.”
