Memorial garden in who have lost the Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital Trust are launching a fundraising appeal to develop memorial ‘Rainbow Gardens’ in memory of all the local people who have sadly lost their life to Covid-19, including two beloved colleagues With a target of £35,000, this will allow a garden to be created at both hospital sites, a memorial for lost colleagues, and additional tables and benches to be located for patients and staff to enjoy. During the pandemic the rainbow has become a symbol of support for the NHS. The garden will be a dedicated space for families and colleagues to visit, a calm and peaceful place, to remember those loved ones we have lost. To date, 200 people have sadly died at the Trust from Covid-19,

including two colleagues, Kevin Smith and Dr Medhat Atalla. Doncaster Echo spoke to Paul Haslam, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Rekha Ramanath, Consultant Care of the Elderly, who are both leading on the project. They said: “Dr Atalla and Kev Smith will be greatly missed by everybody at the Trust and the local community. After speaking to both families and also colleagues who have worked with Dr Atalla and Kevin Smith, it is felt the creation of a memorial garden in their honour

n memory of those eir life to Covid-19 will be a fitting legacy and I think they would be pleased that it will be somewhere that would put a smile on people’s faces for the benefit of all. “Whilst clapping for our colleagues it became clear to me that the outdoor environment could be significantly improved. There are no end of opportunities to make the hospital environment a better place to be. Improving our outdoor spaces will help to ease some of the pressure and provide a better quality outdoor environment for colleagues, supporting better mental health and wellbeing. “Since the appeal was launched in June 2020 we have been inundated with offers of support from our brilliant local communities. Thank you so much to everyone who has been in touch to offer everything from benches to plants! We hope work

on the Rainbow Garden at Bassetlaw Hospital will commence mid September. The work on the garden will be carried out by J P Fox Services of Worksop who will be providing their services free of charge. We are very grateful to John and Carolyn Fox for their support and we’re so excited to see the finished product! “At Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Elaine Cresswell from reShaped has visited the site and we are waiting on Elaine’s design plan which we will share as soon as we receive it. Thank you to David from AWS Landscapes for their continued support.” To support the Rainbow Gardens’ appeal you can donate on the JustGiving Page: www.justgiving. com/crowdfunding/doncaster-bassetlaw?utm_ term=gwAwpGA5G

FROM A POLICE Latest policing news in and around Doncaster

‘We want to make life as difficult as possible for dealers while gathering more information about their operations and building up a picture of their criminal network.’

Page 8

Issue 009 - August/September 2020

E PERSPECTIVE: This month, South Yorkshire Police updates us with the latest policing news and priorities in and around Doncaster An investigation has been launched following the discovery of a man’s body at an address in Balby, Doncaster. Officers attended the flat in Hatfield House, Grove Place shortly after 11pm on 26th August and found the body of a 39-year-old man. Three people present at the scene were detained on suspicion of murder. Two women, aged 45 and 40, and a 21-year-old man, remain in police custody at this time. Formal identification and a postmortem examination are yet to take place. A police cordon will remain in place as enquiries continue. Anyone with information about the man’s death is asked to contact police on 101. The incident number to quote is 926 of 26 August. Furthermore, fortify officers recovered £11,000 from an address in Doncaster last month after executing two warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act. The properties, on Sydney Road and Acacia Road, were raided after intelligence suggested the addresses had links to county lines drug dealing. County lines sees organised crime groups groom and exploit children and vulnerable adults in order to traffic drugs between counties. Police also seized a quantity of Class A drugs, thought to be cocaine, and a quantity of suspected cannabis.

Detective Inspector, Steve Smith said: “County lines is an incredibly damaging tactic undertaken by certain organised crime groups. It involves children or vulnerable adults being systematically moved around the country to supply drugs in smaller towns or in more rural areas, and widen the gang’s network. “Carrying out warrants and seizing drugs and suspected proceeds of crime is vital in disrupting these tactics. We want to make life as difficult as possible for dealers while gathering more information about their operations and building up a picture of their criminal network. “County lines gangs are a threat to our communities; most of all to vulnerable people, both adults and children. We will be relentless in our efforts to eradicate them, but we cannot do it alone. Under Operation Fortify, we work hard alongside key partner agencies, local schools and charities to raise awareness and protect those who are most vulnerable.” If anyone has any concerns that someone they know is involved in this type of crime, please report this to police through 101. Alternatively, you can stay completely anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers via their website Crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling their UK Contact Centre on 0800 555 111.

Sandall Park: Everyone’s back garden

What a lovely spot to spend some time with your family. However, it has been a bumpy journey to get the park we all love today. Doncaster Echo had a chat with Sandra Crabtree, chair of Friends of Sandall Park (FoSP), to find out more about the park, its roots, and what plans it has for the future Sandall Park was born in 1939, transformed from a brick works to an urban park, at a time when people had war on their minds. With a Boating Lake, children’s boats, putting green, golf, cricket, cycling races, football, angling, public toilets, the park had it all. However, by 1994 the council had withdrawn all facilities and funding and had abandoned the park to the yobs and criminals. Stolen motorbike racing, drinks dens and vandalism became the norm, visitors and park users withdrew – and then came FoSP: Friends of Sandall Park. Sandra told Doncaster Echo: “In 2004 the group was formed and after a slow start things began to change. The first thing was a Crime Reduction Strategy to obliterate the antisocial behaviour element – which took us three to four years.

Page 10

“It hasn’t been easy, it took quite a few battles with the council but eventually they got the message that we weren’t going away and the tide was turned. Since then we have drawn over £700,000 investment into the park through grant applications and funding appeals and we continue to raise new projects. “Our latest, and most poignant success, has been our Quiet Garden. We have done lots to promote physical fitness, we are now concentrating on mental health which is a key concern nationwide. We have had mindfulness events and exercise classes in there but people use it to sit and regain some equilibrium. “We have an international FoSP with members from America, thr Netherlands and Australia involved with the Quiet Garden – they have

Issue 009 - August/September 2020

purchased memorial trees for it and have been actively involved in its development from afar. They designed our Quiet Garden logo! “We are now working on a Mindfulness Project to take the Quiet Garden and the park further into helping people with mental health issues. Numerous people have commented on our Facebook page (over 6,600 followers) about how it has helped them through lockdown. In the very near future we will be installing a Caring Hands Sculpture to commemorate all the people who have suffered during the Covid crisis. This will also include painted stones that people have decorated and donated. We are also working on a dog drinking station which will hopefully be installed soon. “When anyone wants to know anything about

the park or what’s happening in it – they phone FoSP. Our core group is only very small, but we have innumerable other volunteers via park visitors. They will pick litter on their way round the park, help with ad hoc jobs, report anything that requires attention to us, and generally keep an eye on the park. We also work very closely with the StreetScene and Neighbourhood Teams at Doncaster Council. Together we make a great team and it shows, Sandall Park is easily Doncaster’s premier urban park.” For more information, please visit www. sandallpark.org.uk or ‘Sandall Park’ on Facebook.

Business expert Katherine Rowell from D&K Wills talks to us about how lasting powers of attorney can be hard to get your head around within England and Wales, but can help to give peace of mind for the future

Peace of mind and planning for uncertainty Unlike a will, a lasting power of attorney is used during life and normally used to help manage someones finances or healthcare choices when they have lost the capacity to do so themselves. A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to appoint someone to make decisions as if they were you, providing you still have mental capacity to be able to carry out your instructions. There are two different types: Firstly, health and welfare. This can only be used when you have lost mental capacity and allows someone else to make decisions about your healthcare, for example, that you would prefer to have care in your own home rather than residential care elsewhere.

Page 14

Or that in certain situations you would not want life-sustaining treatment. Secondly - finance and property. This allows someone to deal with your finances such as pensions, investments, savings or sale of the house. You can nominate someone to do this while you have capacity (especially useful for those with businesses) or on incapacity only. Contrary to popular belief spouses and next of kin do not automatically have these rights and without a Llasting power of attorney someone is appointed on your behalf by the Office of the Public Guardian which is exceptionally costly and time consuming. Please get in touch if this is something you feel would benefit you and your family or if you have any questions on how they work.
