Celebrating everything good in doncaster and surrounding areas INTRODUCTION
Hello and welcome to your October/ November edition of Doncaster Echo!
October brings the return of autumn and of course the spooky season. Those dark nights are back, and we personally love getting all cosy and having heart-warming homecooked meals! This winter is going to be a tough one for us all due to the cost-of0living crises, and here at Doncaster Echo we vow to do our best to help our community. In this edition we have a chat to Chloe Carrigan who has walked 100km this month to raise money for a designated space in Doncaster hospital for families to go if they
have experienced a bereavement, allowing them to spend time with, and mourn, the loss of a newborn. We also showcase some of the lovely animals currently staying at RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham branch who are in need of a forever family.
As always if you would like more information about how you or your business can be featured in the magazine, get in touch with a member of our friendly team who will be happy to help.
We will see you again in December!

Last year, Chloe gave birth to a stillborn child at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) on the central delivery suite, surrounded by the cries of newborn babies, and in early 2022, she sadly suffered a miscarriage.
However, Chloe and her partner Mitchell Carrigan are full of praise for DBTH’s maternity bereavement team, and in particular Mathew Proctor and Rhian Morris who are DBTH’s bereavement midwives. They consequently wanted to raise funds for the Serenity Appeal as a way of saying thank you for the support that they received throughout these experiences.
The Serenity Appeal will ensure that those who require the support of the maternity bereavement team at DBTH receive a gold standard of care. The appeal will fund the creation of a specialist bereavement suite, The Serenity Suite, which will be a designated space for families to go if they have experienced a bereavement, allowing them to spend time with, and mourn, the loss of their newborn.
Chloe started the walk on what would have been Avery’s first birthday, 31st July and finished the walk on 31st August. Along with her two pugs, Bulo and Jax, Chloe has been walking around her local village and the surrounding fields.
Doncaster Echo had a chat with Chloe to find out more about her challenge and how it went.
How did the idea come about?
The idea came about because we wanted to do something for Avery’s first birthday, and we thought the Serenity Appeal would be perfect because we know how valued a space like that was when I gave birth to Avery. We know how heart-breaking it is having to go onto the central delivery suite, so this would help make it a little easier for families affected in the future.
What did you find most challenging?
I’d say the most challenging part has been trying to reach 100km, especially having to miss nearly a week due to the heatwave we had and fitting it in around work. It was also hard dealing with the “bad days” with it being Avery’s birthday, bringing all the memories back.
What have you found most rewarding?
The most rewarding bit has been finishing it and knowing we can help future families in a small way. It has been a way of saying ‘thank you’ to the bereavement midwives Matt and Rhian because they really have gone above and beyond for myself and my husband and we know how they’re also working to achieve this.
Doncaster Echo would like to say a huge well done to Chloe for completing this mammoth challenge!
Chloe is hoping to raise £500 for the appeal, so if anyone would like to donate to this brilliant cause, please visit https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Chloe-Carrigan1
Chloe Carrigan has just finished a sponsored 100km dog walk to raise money for the Serenity Appeal, an initiative that aims to improve the standard of maternity bereavement care at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH)

Doncaster Policing Team celebrates a successful summer!
FROM A POLICE “We had some great comments from the public, with officers praised for their ‘approachable and friendly’ nature, and for being ‘proud to be an officer with SYP supporting pride.”
POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
The summer months can often be challenging with an increase in demand and difficult weather conditions, as we saw this year.
However, they also provide our teams with extra opportunities to get out and join in with various community events around the district
A few weeks ago, South Yorkshire Police officers joined with the Doncaster community to celebrate this year’s Pride event. It was great to see people come together in a show of unity to support the local LGBT community. SYP officers spent time engaging with the public and raising awareness of hate crime as well as overseeing the safety of the day. We had some great comments from the public, with officers praised for their ‘approachable and friendly’ nature, and for being ‘proud to be an officer with SYP supporting pride’.
As part of our ongoing commitment to tackling violent crime, officers from the Central and East Neighbourhood Policing Teams (NPTs) conducted a knife arch operation at Lazarus Court at the end of July. During the operation over 100 people were checked, and thankfully none of them were found to be carrying knives or other weapons. A significant amount of Class A drugs were seized and three men were dealt with for drugs offences.
Again, the response that officers received from the public was overwhelmingly positive, with many people taking the time to stop and talk to them. The vast majority said they were pleased to see officers
doing operations like this, and felt safer as a result. We have similar operations planned for the coming months.
Work has also continued in tackling drug-related and organised crime. Over three days in July, neighbourhood officers working in partnership with Immigration Enforcement, Nothern Powergrid and Doncaster Council executed 12 warrants under the Misuse of Drugs Act. This work saw over 1,000 cannabis plants, with a street value of more than £1 million, seized and six people arrested on suspicion of drugs offences. They are now being processed through the courts.
At each of the addresses, the electricity had been dangerously bypassed, putting neighbouring properties at the risk of fire. Work like this is not possible without intelligence from our communities, and I would urge anyone with information about properties you believe to be involved in drugs production to please get in touch with us. You can report to us via our online portal, by calling 101 or contacting your neighbourhood teams directly.
This month we focus on RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham Branch
At the RSPCA Doncaster and Rotherham Branch, the team cares for over 1,000 animals per year, ranging from dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to birds, wildlife and rabbits. Their aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home every animal they care for. That being said, some animals are in care longer than others.
DANIELLE POULSTON SHOWCASES SOME OF THE TEAM’S LONG-STAY RESIDENTS, ALL OF WHOM ARE READY AND WAITING FOR THEIR FOREVER FAMILIES.
We’re happy to announce our previous longeststay rabbit, Casper, has found his forever home! However, we have many other bunnies searching for their forever families.
Whether you are on the lookout for a dynamic duo or a sole companion, we have a wide variety of animals currently available for adoption – from dogs and cats to rabbits and guinea pigs.
When one of our animals becomes available for adoption, they are posted on our website (https:// www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk/animals-foradoption) and Facebook page.
If you are interested in adopting an animal, please follow the process explained on our website.

Local animals in need of a ‘forever family’...
ELIJAH & ERICA
“Our longest-stay feline residents are Elijah and Erica, a bonded pair who are very affectionate. They are looking for a home where they can grow old together. Elijah is the most confident out of the pair; he loves meeting other cats and is very chatty. Erica takes a little longer than Elijah to come around; however, she can be tempted by treats. Elijah and Erica would be best suited to a family with no other pets and children over the age of 10.”
BOO
“Unfortunately, Boo has been in our care for almost half of her life. She came into our centre with her siblings at 12 weeks old, she is now five months old. All her siblings have found their ‘Happy Ever Afters’, but Boo is still waiting. This is through no fault of her own, she is a lovely friendly dog who is looking for a sofa to snuggle up on and a person to cuddle. She is very energetic and loves to be around people. Boo is looking for a family that has the time to help her build her confidence and improve her socialisation and training. Boo’s new owners would need to be at home for most of the time as she will need lots of reassurance to help her settle in. Boo is looking for a home that has previous experience with larger breeds. She can live with children over the age of 10 years old but needs to be the only pet.”
MARTINA
“Martina is on the search for her very own hutch to call home. She generally prefers to stay indoors but does like to explore out and about occasionally. She is shy, so would benefit from a confident neutered male partner to bring her out of her shell.”
MAC
“We are also searching for a family for the lovely Mac. He came into the centre through no fault of his own and has found it hard to adapt to cattery life. Mac has been on foster for the last few months and is proving to be a very nice-natured, affectionate cat. He does take a while to come round to his surroundings and get used to people, but once he is happy around you, he will snuggle up to your leg and do zoomies around the house. Mac would be best suited to an adult-only home where he can be left to do things in his own time without being pushed. He should also be the only pet for now until he settles in.”
