Seven of Doncaster’s parks awarded coveted Green Flag Award We all know that Doncaster has some brilliant parks in and around the city, but now all seven of our parks have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award. This is a record-breaking feat for 2023 and is certainly something for all us local residents to be proud of!

South Yorkshire address of fraudulently o

South Yorkshire Police’s fraud co-ordination team is once again issuing a warning to local residents about a parcel delivery scam which sees items fraudulently sent to addresses within our force area

“While genuine South Yorkshire addresses are being supplied as the delivery address, the parcels are being directed to a nearby Post Office or intercepted on route, allowing the scammer to get their hands on the goods without making payment.”

On agreeing the purchase, the scammer then shows the seller a fake payment message or PayPal confirmation, advising them the payment is pending. However, the payment never goes through.

While genuine South Yorkshire addresses are being supplied as the delivery address, the parcels are being directed to a nearby Post Office or intercepted en route, allowing the scammer to get their hands on the goods without making payment.

A recent trend has seen many scammers using Facebook Marketplace to target their victims. With that in mind, the force’s fraud co-ordination team are reminding people how they can be vigilant: • When somebody claims to have paid you for an item, check the money is in your account before sending it to them.

• While we appreciate finances are tight for everyone currently, it is always worth paying that little bit extra for insurance before sending items – particularly items of a high value.

DS Sam Erabadda, from the fraud co-ordination team, said: “While the addresses being used in this scam are often based within South Yorkshire, we are aware of a number of reports from across the country of people who have fallen victim to this scam.

“If you purchase any goods via social media, never post the item until you’ve received payment.

Be aware of fake payment notifications from companies such as PayPal - scammers can make confirmation emails, texts and webpages look really convincing.

“I’d really encourage everyone to continue to spread the word about scams like this, and ensure their loved ones know to be vigilant. Stopping others from potentially falling victim can save people both financial loss and the hurt of being tricked by those willing to take advantage of others.”

The force is regularly working with partners such as the Home Office and Action Fraud to combat fraud of this and many other types.

Doncaster soldier is ra

the best recruit at grad Last month, a Doncaster soldier led a parade of over 400 soldiers off the parade square in recognition of being named Best Recruit at his passing-out ceremony Bradley Ruddy received the award for Best Junior Soldier as he passed out of the prestigious Army Foundation College in Harrogate.

The former Hungerhill School pupil was given the privilege of wearing the rank of Junior Regiment Sergeant Major (JRSM) and carried the JRSM pace stick. He gave the final words of command to over 400 fellow soldiers who were on parade to officially mark the end of their basic training.

Bradley said: ““It was a proud moment when I was told I’d been named Best Recruit and would lead the parade off the square. It’s an honour.”

“Everyone deserved their spot on the drill square. We’ve all worked extremely hard and put 100% effort in.”

Bradley is joining the Coldstream Guards and has packed a lot into his time at the AFC. He said: “I joined because I wanted to travel the world and, in the Army, you can do that for free.

“I’ve always been big into doing things outdoors and the Army offers a lot of adventure training, so that caught my eye.”

“I do a lot of running and I’m a big hill walker. I just like being outside.”

His first Army trip abroad saw him travel to Normandy, France, for a five-day Realities of War exercise. He learnt about the Second World War and visited the D-day beaches, the German defensive positions and Normandy’s war cemeteries.

Bradley was part of a team of four that represented AFC Harrogate at the World Pace Sticking Competition held at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Bradley said: “It was the first time the AFC had entered a team. At first, we practised on the parade square with our Platoon Sergeant then in the mornings and evenings on our own time. We came fifth overall.”

He has also represented his platoon at boxing. “It was a lot of training before the working day,” he said. “I’d be up at half five to train before the working day started. We would all then be training in the evenings after work as well. It was a good experience, and our platoon won the overall competition.”

A huge well done to Bradley!
