Catch up with your mayor, Terence Smith He’s back! Mayor of Goole, Terence Smith, wanted to take a moment to wish Our Goole readers a belated Happy New Year and catch you up on what’s in store for 2017

I can’t quite believe that we are in February 2017 already. I hope the new year is going well for you so far. 2016 will be forever marked in my mind as a year of change. At times, it felt as though the year would never endwe lost so many great people including the star man David Bowie, the great Gene Wilder and, of course, Victoria Wood. But last year wasn’t all bad and did in fact have some great highlights. I became mayor of the town I love, and I couldn’t be prouder to represent Goole and the wonderful people who live here. I’ve given it my best shot and have been fully dedicated to my role. I have four months left of my term and have so many exciting things planned for them. We will be holding a youth day which will be an opportunity to get young people engaged and active in the community, in politics and to hear their views on how Goole can work better for them. In Goole, we are also the gateway to Hull, this year’s City of Culture, and should be really proud of places demonstrating that such as Junction, which is always busy and has some great events lined up throughout the year. And if that’s not enough to be happy about, the mayor’s show this year is set to be the best ever-with a few surprises along the way.

My time as mayor wouldn’t be as great without the people of Goole, and I need you all in 2017. I need your views and ideas in order to get Goole well and truly on the map in 2017. There’s so much in our town to celebrate and be proud of, and we should be making the most of every day spent here. So go and visit The Lowther, now the oldest hotel in the country, see a show at the Junction or take a look around our museum and shout about how great this town is. Let’s be positive about our great town and show that things can only get better in Goole. Until next time, Terence. 7

FROM A POLICE

Keeping your bicycle secure This month, Sgt David Lonsdale wants to raise awareness about protecting your bicycle. By following his top tips, you are sure to lower your risk of being a victim of bike theft

‘PCSO Rosie Emerton will be working with the school to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring all bicycles are securely locked’

8

Issue 013-February 2017

E PERSPECTIVE: Between January 2014 and August 2016, 1,858 bicycles were reported and recorded as stolen in the East Riding area. Two key areas of concern in Goole are Boothferry Road, which had the most offences (31) within the outlined period, followed by Goole High School on Centenary Road.

Crimes in your area • A secure cycle was stolen from a rear garden in Goole.

PCSO Rosie Emerton is the nominated officer in Goole for bike theft reductions and will be working with the school to raise awareness about the importance of ensuring all bicycles are securely locked and the bike’s details, such as model number, are recorded by the owner.

• A door handle was damaged in an attempted break-in of a property.

Make sure you do all you can to protect your property by following these top tips:

• Access was gained into a secure property at Rawcliffe Bridge and jewellery stolen.

1. If you haven’t done so already, register your bicycle frame number along with any pictures and other details you have on www. immobilise.com. Registration on Immobilise only takes a couple of minutes. All you need is your bike’s make, model, identifying number code(s) and a few photographs. 2. Invest in a quality ‘D’ lock to help reduce the risk of your bike being stolen. 3. Look at where you are storing your bike and make sure that your shed or garage is secured with a good-quality lock. Many shed windows are never used; if this is the case, why not screw them shut? Fitting mesh or steel bars across the window from the inside allows light to enter but means the thief has to go to a lot of trouble to remove them. Replace broken glass with laminated glass. 4. Consider buying a cycle anchor that can be bolted to the wall or floor of your shed, which your cycle can then be fastened to, or if you have several cycles, lock them altogether. 5. If you are having to leave your bike out on the street, where possible leave it in a well-lit area and lock both the frame and wheels to the bike stand. If there is no stand, ensure that it’s locked to secure street furniture, e.g. railings or a lamp post.

• A secure car was stolen and later discovered burnt out.

• A car door was damaged in an attempted break-in of a secure car. • A secure electric bike was stolen from a rear garden. • A scooter was pushed over causing damage. • An object was thrown at a side UPVC door causing damage to the outer pane of glass. • Three cars in Goole have had wing mirrors damaged. • Two unoccupied houses under renovation were broken into causing damage. • An insecure bicycle was stolen from outside a property. • Two large cast-iron urns containing fir trees were stolen from the front of a property in Swinefleet.

School receives historic artefacts fro The Read School, Drax, recently hosted one of its former pupils, who visited the school to donate a number of artefacts to the school archives Celebrating its 350th anniversary this year, the school is planning to hold a small exhibition in the summer term of items from its archives, making the donation especially significant. Tom Strickland, who now lives in Chester, was a pupil at the school from 1971 to 1978, following in the footsteps of his father, Ronald, who had been a pupil there from 1919 to 1927.

Ronald Strickland became a governor at the school in 1959 and served as Chairman from 1971 to 1979, when he retired. Few governors in this day and age serve for as long on any school board, and his contribution to the running of the school came at a crucial time, helping to guide it through the conversion to full independence in 1967, following the decision by the then West Riding County Council to discontinue the funding of the school as Drax Grammar School.

The Drama Studio at the school is named in his memory, and a prize bearing his name is presented for the best all-round contribution by a Pre-Prep School child, at the school’s annual Commemoration Day. Tom Strickland decided to donate several items of interest to the school, not least a special spade which bears the inscription ‘Presented to R M Strickland, Chairman of Governors, 19711979, on the occasion of the

Headmaster Dr John Sweetman said: ‘The items which Tom has kindly donated to the school are of great significance and we are very grateful to him for his generosity. They will take pride of place in our exhibition in the summer, which we are very excited about as we hope to show a wide range of artefacts going back several hundred years. We are very proud of the fact that there has been a school on the same site here for 350 years.’

Goole and its surrounding area is home to some incredible people, and Our Goole is dedicated to giving them the publicity they deserve. That’s why, when we stumbled across Joe Harkin, 29, an unsigned musician with an undeniable talent from Howden, we just had to take the time to hear his story Joe, when did you realise you wanted to be a musician? I didn’t actually start learning to play the guitar until I was 20 years old. After returning from my first trip to Glastonbury festival in 2007, I realised I wanted to get into music, so I joined a local Goole band, The Modern Souls-although we later changed our name to The Dirty Rogues. We enjoyed success at a regional level and played a number of big venues including the O2 Academy Liverpool and the famous Cavern Club. Unfortunately, due to members’ work commitments, we split in 2011.

18

For the last eight years I’ve been writing and performing my own songs at local venues, festivals and open mic nights.

What is it you love most about performing? I actually get really nervous before I perform, but the sense of fulfilment I feel afterwards makes it worth it-I love that feeling. How supportive are your friends and family? My friends and family have always been really supportive and, with their help, I’ve managed to gain a modest following over the years. Who is your musical inspiration? Bob Dylan was a big inspiration for me to actually start writing my own music. To be honest, I have a pretty eclectic taste in all genres

talented success

Issue 013-February 2017

of music so I take any inspiration I can from whatever I listen to. Inspiration for my lyrics comes from anything I can think of really -my surroundings, people in my life, real situations I come across and even sometimes politics.

Who is your biggest fan? My self-proclaimed biggest fan has to be my friend and Goole’s finest, Adam Taylor. He’s pretty much been attending all of my gigs since I first started performing, so I think it’s only fair that award goes to him. What can we expect from you in 2017? I want to continue performing locally, but I’m also currently gathering a good body of songs together, and I hope to get them professionally recorded later on this year. Watch this space! You can listen to Joe perform on his Facebook page-search Joe Harkin.

‘IRON MAN’ IVAN NEARS THE END OF AMAZING YEAR-LONG CHALLENGE A fitness instructor from Goole is nearing the end of an epic 53-week challenge which would push many people half his age to their limit. And it is all in the name of three deserving charities that are close to his heart Ivan Down, 53, created Challenge 53/53 early last year – with the aim of completing 53 demanding physical challenges over 53 weeks in his 53rd year. He began in earnest on February 12 2016 by completing a full marathon (26.2 miles) on a rowing machine, and he will reach the end of his challenge on Sunday, February 12 2017 with the Muddy Boots 10k in Ripon. The 12 months in between have seen him successfully complete an awe-inspiring range of physical trials ranging from marathons in Yorkshire, Leicester, Nottingham and Hull to the Darlington 10k, Hell On The Humber, the Ullswater Open Swim and the Catterick Triathlon. Originally from South East London, Ivan has lived in Goole for nearly 25 years and works as a Fitness Co-ordinator for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and also as a freelance Personal Trainer. Prior to that he spent almost a quarter of a century in the army, much of it in the Royal Army Physical Training Corps.

swims, a number of gym challenges and various other runs ranging from 5km (carrying 53kg), up to 53km. Ivan continued: ‘I’m lucky to have lots of support from friends and family – their comments have ranged from mad and crazy to insane and inspiring. ‘But I believe that anyone can do it if they apply themselves and focus. The last few weeks have been testing as I’m carrying a couple of injuries, so I’m looking forward to a nice relaxing holiday to recuperate. Now I’m nearing the end, people keep asking me what I’m going to do with myself. I’m a “never say never” kind of person, so I will continue taking on physical challenges, and I already have my name down for the Great North Swim 10k in June.’ At the time of writing, Ivan had raised close to £4,000 but is keen to reach his target of £5,300. For more information and to help push Ivan over his fundraising target, visit www.facebook. com/Challenge5353 and www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/Ivan-Down

Ivan told us: ‘Over the years I’ve completed a number of events for individual charities, but I thought it was time to really challenge myself and raise some cash for a number of good causes in one go. ‘With Challenge 53/53 I am raising money for the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Bowel Cancer UK, the British Lung Foundation, Scope and the Stroke Association. A good brand builds customer confidence-but how can you make sure you do it right? This month, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green gives us her top tips

Branding-not just for the bigger businesses Branding is an important part of the marketing function of business. A strong brand differentiates one business from another. It can symbolise how people think about your business and helps them in their decision making, giving them a perceived knowledge before they buy. Your branding needs to be consistent, and it’s the personality of your business and can therefore attract your perfect client.

Every business already has a brand even if you don’t treat it as one. Your customers, and potential customers, already have a perception of what your business means to them. Building upon this brand means you can communicate your message more effectively and add real value to your business, which helps you stand out from the crowd. Ensure the message you want to deliver to customers and potential customers is built into everything they see or hear, even before they engage with you.

Issue 013-February 2017 If you employ staff, ensure they understand your brand values and that they believe in them. Employee attitude and behaviour can influence the success of your brand more than promotional activity. Every point of contact for your business should reflect your values. Once the brand is established, you need to make certain it is managed effectively. Keep everyone involved and continually review how your values are communicated. Reviewing your products, services and systems will ensure they are well supported. Always think about your customers’ needs but make certain your brand isn’t compromised or it could devalue it. Stick with your brand and be aware of its value. Be consistent – from emails to stationery and even to how the phone is answered, your clients should always feel you are delivering on the brand promise. Failure to deliver on your brand values is likely to be damaging, but delivering on brand promises will strengthen it. Deciding what you want to do as a career, or considering a change of career, can sometimes be hard. But spending some time doing work experience in a particular sector you might be interested in can be a useful place to start.

Have you ever thought about work experience? Work experience can take the form of volunteering in a local organisation or on a community project. It can also mean you spending some of your free time with an employer, who can provide you with a valuable introduction to the skills and qualities required

in a specific line of work. Employers understand the importance of work experience and have stated that the top three skills they look for in a candidate are confidence, communication and teamwork. Work experience can be a great way to improve yourself in all of these areas.

1 3

2

5

4

Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you – Go and get them! Over half of employers offer work experience but many don’t advertise their places. Be proactive.

Do your homework! – Take time to find out what the employer you’ve chosen to approach for your work experience does. For example, do they build things, and if so, what? Explaining why you want to do work experience in their company is a great way to show you’re enthusiastic and motivated. Work experience doesn’t end when you leave the building – Ask for feedback when you have completed your placement to identify areas for improvement. Make sure you add your work experience to your CV including the tasks you performed and the skills you gained. Lastly, don’t forget to ask the person that looked after you for a reference.

Here are some top tips from employers on how you can find and obtain work experience: Apply yourself – Employers don’t want to be approached by your mum or dad; they want to hear directly from you. Picking up the phone or sending an email asking for information about their work experience placements goes a long way. Be open-minded – When you begin your work experience and throughout, remember to try new tasks, meet new people and muck in. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you’re not sure or something is unclear. For an employer this can be a sign of maturity.

Business of the

month

Husband and wife team, John and Denise Howard OBE, have built up an outstanding reputation since they founded Inceil in 2013

We caught up with the hardworking duo to find out how they make completing work to such a high standard and keeping customers happy look so easy. Denise, when was Inceil founded? John and I had already run various successful businesses together over 30 years including a building company for 13 years.

Plasterboard is fitted over the insulation then plastered to a smooth finish. Nothing is visible from the outside, and the conservatory is much warmer in the winter, and cooler in the summer.

We’re really proud of the feedback we receive from customers. They can’t speak highly enough of the service they receive from us and the difference the insulation makes to their conservatory.

Inceil was formed in 2013 to specialise in insulating conservatories to make them usable all year round.

The Inceil conservatory insulation system can be installed in most glass, polycarbonate or timber conservatories whatever the shape or size.

We’re very proud of the reputation Inceil has built over the years, and we are dedicated to ensuring it is maintained by delivering excellent customer service.

Can you tell us about the services you offer? If your conservatory is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, then Inceil Ltd can help you out. Polycarbonate sheets and glass panels in conservatory roofs are not thermally effective, meaning the conservatory becomes too hot in summer and too cold in winter. A thinner but high-performing aluminimum foil insulation has been developed, which is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs to enable the space to be used in comfort all year round. 34

Our customers are delighted with the difference the Inceil system will make to how they use their conservatory. It will feel like a proper room with a better temperature throughout the year so you can actually use it, and enjoy being in there. What are you most proud of? Our customer service and attention to detail and quality means our business has grown from recommendations and referrals. We use our own professional team of fitters to ensure quality and they are used to travelling all over the UK.

What does the future hold for Inceil? In 2016, we opened a new branch in Cheltenham. Throughout this year, we hope to continue growing and expanding our business. Exciting times are ahead at Inceil. You can keep up to date by visiting our website-www.inceil.co.uk. Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? Local magazines like Our Goole play an important part in promoting our business and keeping in touch with customers.

In 2016 you joined the Wilson Racing team on a Moto3. Before the season started, how much time had you spent riding the bike? I had ridden the bike for five days at Cartagena and we also did the BSB test at Donington Park. What were your goals for the season at that stage? We were hoping to get in the top five but the standard was very high, so I was delighted to finish the first race at Silverstone in fourth position. However, I realised it was going to be difficult to repeat that regularly in my first year. Of the 22 races in the season, you only failed to finish in three. How important is it to be consistent? 38

It’s always important because if it comes down to the last round you always need that extra point. You managed to get your first podium at Cadwell Park at the end of August. What did it feel like to step up on the podium? It felt absolutely amazing but I looked up at the top step and wanted to be on that. At the beginning of October you won your first race at Assen. What is the track like? It was the best track I’ve ever ridden; it was grippy and so fast and flowing, which I loved the most. Motorcycle racers cannot win races on their own. Who has helped you throughout 2016? Well, of course, the biggest help has come from my

Snaith school boy’s season success Charlie Atkins, 13, from Goole, managed to step on the podium twice in his rookie Moto3 year. He later finished 8th in the overall standings of the HEL performance Motostar British Championship 2016 standard class. We caught up with him to find out all about it mum, dad, Uncle Lee and Gary Wilson, the team owner. However, I couldn’t have raced if it wasn’t also for the generous support I received, financial or otherwise, from Harman Carpets, Repair & Restore Body Shop (Goole) Limited, Metcalf Autos, Kate and Rob Corkhill, Rosemary Poulton, Steve and Alison Coulthard and MustHaveMediaServices.com.

What can we expect from Charlie Atkins in 2017? It has been a great year but we don’t know yet what we are doing in 2017 as it’s a lot of money to keep going for another year. We will try our best to do something in BSB next year-it all depends on finances.
