Next phase of bypass repair expected to start in May The next phase of carriageway reconstruction on the A63 Selby bypass is scheduled to begin in May. The work will cover the stretch between the A1041 and the A19 Doncaster Road. This work is the second phase of a three-phase project. Phase one, from the A1041 Bawtry Road to A19 at Barlby, was completed in July last year. The third phase will cover the section from the A19 Doncaster Road to A1238 Leeds Road. “We want the people of Selby to have a bypass that is fit for purpose in the interest of the town’s economic future,” said County Councillor Don Mackenzie, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways. “The first phase was completed on schedule and within budget, and was well-received by locals. We are pleased to be ready to begin the second phase of the work.”

Advanced notice signs will be put in place advising motorists of the area of closure, and a diversion route around the works will be clearly signed and suitable for all types of traffic. Every effort will be made to discourage traffic from using unsuitable routes.

The work involves deep repair and reinstatement of the carriageway, which requires a full closure of the bypass along the stretch under reconstruction.

Once work is under way, regular updates will be carried on the County Council’s website, www.northyorks.gov.uk.

Hundreds of jobs coming to Sherburn-in-Elmet There has been good news for both the businesses as well as the people of Selby district as Legal & General announced the launch of their modular housing arm of their business.

Specialising in state-of-the-art homes the Sherburn-in-Elmet factory will span some 550,000 square foot, and will employ between 400 to 500 people. The project, which launches in the midst of the worst UK housing crisis post World War Two, could finally deliver the different development approach that has long since been called for. To put this crisis into figures there is a bridge to be built between the 130,000 homes the UK is currently building annually, compared to the 250,000 required by the population. Legal & General’s modular homes project seeks to overcome this very problem and through the use of sustainable, durable modern materials and tried and tested technology their Sherburn-in-Elmet factory will begin to deliver new homes from as early on as June. “Modern modular housing in the UK has so far been restricted to the top end of the market: the scale of our Sherburn facility will enable many more people to benefit from new, environmentally friendly construction techniques which have already become mainstream in Europe.” Paul Stanworth, Managing Director of Legal & General Capital. The homes that will begin to churn off of the production lines within Legal & General’s factory will each maintain a focus upon quality, whilst also delivering an off-site home build solution that is flexible and cost effective enough to create properties ranging from 20-storey apartments to single detached homes.

10

The processes employed within the modular homes construction process will reduce development times by in-excess of 70% when compared to a traditional build, which is good news for developers and for the many who have found themselves unable to enter a market saturated by eager buyers. What’s more with these processes also employing cross laminated timber and automated technology, the new homes that are produced will remove shrinkage, cracking, wet trades, plaster jointing and nailing. It truly seems then that if this project delivers upon all that it says it will that demand for modular housing could well see an ever burgeoning workforce within Legal & General’s flagship Sherburn-inElmet factory. “I am delighted that The LEP was able to play a significant role in securing Legal & General’s investment into Selby. The confidence shown not only brings over 400 jobs to the area, it highlights the strength of the City Region’s workforce within the manufacturing sector and underlines our attractiveness to international investors due to our location at the heart of the UK which ensures easy access to both domestic and global markets”- Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (The LEP).

Centre of excellence right on our doorstep Learning to swim is one of the most daunting, vitally important, difficult yet ultimately rewarding experiences of your life. Overcoming your fears and mastering such a life-saving skill is something no one should be denied.

The Carol Saunders Swim School recently added a stunning new pool venue their portfolio, launching the next phase of a nationwide success story that is not only saving lives, but also ensuring swimmers have a fun, positive and enjoyable experience in the process.

to success, Naiomi told Locate: ‘Our ultimate aim is to create at our latest venue a centre of excellence for swimming, teaching and swimming teacher training.’

The February issue of ‘Locate’ featured an article on a stunning pool at a private residence, the owners of which have now teamed up with the Carol Saunders Swim School and are offering exclusive use of the beautiful facilities, forming a wonderful new business partnership.

CSSS also operate from venues in Sherburn, Bubwith, York and Barlby. Summer 2016 Term begins April 11 July 24; Summer 2016 Intensives from July 25.

Family run Carol Saunders Swim School and Teacher Training Centre was established in 1987; next year will be their 30th successful year. Lessons were first held at Sherburn High School, but things have developed to such an incredible extent, that mother and daughter aquatic specialists team Carol and Naiomi now operate a nationwide swim school. Carol is listed as one of the top 50 coaches and aquatics specialists in the UK. Carol has founded a number of local swimming clubs and coached swimmers to win the National Championships. Naiomi is an Aquatic Tutor Assessor and Tri-coach and one of her athletes has recently qualified for the GB Age Group Team for 2016. The Swim School prides itself on its exemplary, wellearned reputation - the delivery of high standards of swimming tuition and coaching of all ages and abilities, along with a personable service to customers. All staff are fully qualified, insured and DBS checked swimming teachers, first aiders and lifesavers. As testament to the success of the swim school, most of the staff are previous swimmers taught and coached by Carol and Naiomi. The school also provide aquatics training courses to allow instructors to become baby and pre-school swimming teachers, swimming teachers, lifeguards, pool plant operators, as well as tutors and assessors. Looking to the future and their ultimate hopes for this exciting new phase on their already well-travelled road

With such an exquisite venue, a maximum of six in each class, and the Spring term now underway, it’s fair to say things are set to go swimmingly!

A DINING EXPERIENCE WELL WORTH A JOURNEY

Sundays

The Drovers Arms, set in the tiny, picturesque village of Skipwith only ten miles south of York, is fast becoming one of the area’s main destination inns The delicious home-made food is locally sourced and reflects the changing seasons, mirroring the wonderful walks to be found through Skipwith Common, right on its doorstep. Owners Graham Usher and Martin Firth, who have over 20 years’ experience in some of Yorkshire’s best hotels, are justifiably proud of their new enterprise which they took over in November 2013. The Drovers Arms has already notched up two awards: it was named one of Yorkshire’s top 30 pubs 2014 & 2015 by Welcome to Yorkshire and is a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence 2014 & 2015 winner. This month business and marketing expert Ann Brown explains easy ways to increase your online profile and boost your business

Easy ways to get found on the Internet The majority of people now search for things to buy and for services online, doing a simple search as the result of seeing an ad or following a recommendation, so it doesn’t matter what type of business you run you have to be found online. If it is difficult to find you online you risk losing out on enquiries.

1. Trade sites and directories are an easy and usually a free way to list your contact details online. The best of these will be well optimised so your details will come up on a Google search. Some of the best are Free Index, Yell, UK small business directory and Yelp.

Wherever you are online a small businesses or sole traders can compete on equal terms with larger businesses. Having a web site seems like the obvious solution, but having a web site is not your only option. Here are my seven of the best alternative ways to be found online. The more of these you do the higher your online profile will be and the easier you will be found!

2. Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and the rest of the social networks! Make sure your profiles are up to date. Include a few key details in your profile and state clearly what you do and what makes you different. 3. Sign up for a Google account and you don’t already have one. You will automatically be given a Google Plus account which works in a similar way to Facebook. Fill

Business of the

month

Fast approaching their tenth year together in partnership, and over twenty side-by-side as a team, Danny and Richard at Eliments are renowned for their firstclass customer service and cost-effective home improvement solutions.

With their latest £100,000 showroom upgrade, Eliments are the first North Yorkshire stockist to display the exclusive ‘Ultraframe’ range. Locate caught up with the hard-working duo to find out about the men behind the business: Danny, when did you found Eliments? “Richard and I have worked together for over 20 years, for many different competitors over that time. Eventually we came to the conclusion that we could provide something a little bit special, so in 2007 we took that final step and founded ‘Eliments’. In those early days it was just the two of us and a van. How things have changed!” Has your business always been based in this area? “When we started we originally focused on York and Selby, but we found we wanted to expand so we branched out to cover a 40 mile radius. That decision was brilliant for our business. Then we found that as customers move house they tend to want us to move with them, which has now taken us into Lincoln, Sheffield, Bradford, Bridlington, Leeds and even down to London.” Tell us about your training and how you worked your way up

24

the career ladder? “I started in the industry as a fabricator, then a supervisor. Promotion to manager, then operations manager followed and now my present role of director. Richard studied for two years at college to be a shop fitter, then worked as an installer for joinery and UPVC specialists. He went on to be a surveyor, progressing to the role of install manager, before making the final leap and he’s now a company director.” Major achievements along the way, milestones etc? “Each year we have invested heavily into our showrooms. We willingly and regularly invest thousands to allow us to proudly showcase all the latest products and ranges, enabling the customer to see state-of-the art products on their doorstep.” How do you find the local area from a business perspective? “Customer satisfaction is paramount and it is a constant battle to keep

lead times to a minimum, whilst efficiently dealing with current customers. Once we know a customer’s requirements we always also offer an alternative option whilst trying to keep it the most cost efficient way possible.” What does the future hold for Eliments? “We have just invested over a £100k into our latest showroom overhaul. We will be the ONLY home improvement company in North Yorkshire to have the complete, new ‘Ultraframe’ products on display in our showroom - we have the ‘Living Roof’, the ‘Real Roof’ and a full ‘Loggia’ orangery/conservatory. It is a major coup and a very prestigious accomplishment.” Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? “We find it very effective advertising in your magazines. We find them a very good return on investment, which is ideal for us.”

SPORTS ON YOUR

MARKS!

Founded by Tadcaster Methodist Church, the event was subsequently taken over by the Tadcaster Harriers who ran things until increasing levels of red-tape, heavier traffic and a downturn in entries saw the very last race take place in 2002. At the height of its popularity in the late 80’s, the race attracted almost 1,000 runners. After a fifteen year break, the race is now back thanks to the planning and organisation of the Tadcaster Triathlon Club. However, within a month of setting the date for the reborn race the horrendous flooding over Christmas led to the partial collapse of Tadcaster’s historic bridge and the town was split in half. Unfortunately the bridge will not be repaired and reopened in time for the race, so the course has had to change slightly. Although race organisers wanted to keep to the original course, Tad 10 (2016) will see a slightly altered route. Other events in the area were also announced shortly after the date for the Tad 10 was set. Wanting as many people as possible to have the chance to be able to run in all the great local events, organisers moved the race back a week to September 18.

If you have any sports news call us on 01904 820883 or email: info@createtvt.co.uk

Locate magazine is proud to announce that we are the main, ‘Gold’ sponsor for this year’s prestigious Tad 10. Established in 1983 the Tadcaster 10 Mile Race was - for two decades - a huge fixture on the summer calendar. Taking up the baton as organisers for this year’s event, the Tadcaster Triathlon Club was formed in 2014 and is based at Tadcaster’s Community Swimming Pool. Although the club is relatively new, membership is now at 40 and growing all the time. Recently they have been putting on coached swim sessions for members, which has proved to be very popular. As well as the Tad 10, the club is putting on four Go-Tri events this year, to give newcomers to the sport a chance to try something different. All the events are inexpensive, low key, short distances and something anybody can have a go at. Although this year’s course will be changed slightly from the original due to the bridge closure, organisers promise it will still be a fast and flat 10 mile route, with 90% of the course unchanged. To enter please go to: www.onerace.com/tad10 Any local businesses who would like to be involved with the Tad 10, there are still sponsorship opportunities available and any volunteers on the day would be most welcome.
