Stingrays set for success thanks to teenager’s passion An inspiring Tadcaster Grammar School student has set up a swimming club for young people with learning or physical disabilities Jemima Browning, 15, herself a competitive swimmer, has established Stingrays at Tadcaster Swimming Pool after being inspired by her 14-year-old brother Will, who has Down’s Syndrome.

me that we should never put limits on what we can achieve. It is very easy for people with a disability to feel isolated and we want to change that. Will’s swimming has improved tremendously and he is hoping to compete in the future, as are the rest of the team.”

Jemima, who lives with her family in Stutton, approached Fiona Garnett, swimming development manager at the pool, with a view to forming a swimming squad which could offer young people with additional needs the chance to develop their swimming skills, socialise and enjoy their independence.

Jemima and Fiona, together with squad coach Ellie Watling, are now looking for more members.

Tadcaster Stingrays launched in May and is open to young people between the ages of 11 and 18 with any kind of physical or learning disability. The squad meets every Wednesday at 6.30pm at a cost of just £3 a session thanks to funding from North Yorkshire Sport. Jemima told Locate: “Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in sport. It builds confidence and gives a fantastic sense of belonging. We have already seen a huge improvement in the team who are really benefiting from a structured session. “Having a brother with Down’s Syndrome has taught

4

“We are passionate about growing the squad,” said Jemima. “Members not only benefit from working on their swimming technique and general fitness but they also get to socialise and form new friendships. Who knows, they may even get to compete in galas one day.” As well as helping to coach the Stingrays, Jemima is maintaining her own competitive swimming. She has been a member of Tadcaster Swim Squad for five years, competing in local, county and regional competitions and winning numerous medals. Most recently she has qualified for four events in the upcoming Yorkshire Winter Championships in Sheffield. North Yorkshire one of the ‘safest places in the country’

Newly released national crime figures have confirmed North Yorkshire is in the top three safest places in England and Wales, alongside Devon and Cornwall and Dyfed-Powys The ‘Crime Statistics for England and Wales, year ending March 2016’ figures published at the end of July reveal that drug offences, thefts from person and possession of weapons offences all fell in North Yorkshire in comparison to the same period the previous year.

the confidence victims have in North Yorkshire Police, particularly those making historical complaints in the wake of the Jimmy Savile investigation, plus the specialist work of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) which has been operating in York for almost three years.

Published alongside the ‘Crime Survey for England and Wales’, the reports also reveal that anti-social behaviour is at an all-time low in North Yorkshire, with a rate of 36 per 1,000 of the population with 29,302 reports. This reflects a reduction from 38 per 1,000 of the population in the previous year, and a steady and consistent reduction from a rate of 65 per 1,000 of the population in March 2008 when there were 49,903 reports.

There were a total of 37,299 crimes in North Yorkshire giving a crime rate of 46.3 per 1,000 of the population. While this reflects a 7.7% rise in crime in comparison to the same period the previous year, it is below the 8.7% increase in England and Wales.

Criminal damage and arson figures show an increase of 17%, burglary rose by 5% and there was a 22% hike in violent crime. There was a reported 7% increase in vehicle offences, while incidents of bicycle theft also increased by 14%. The statistics show that sexual offences have risen by 13%, but this rise is regarded as a positive reflection of

6

Assistant Chief Constable Lisa Winward said: “It is pleasing to see that North Yorkshire remains one of the very safest and low-crime areas in the country. “Any rise in recorded crime is naturally a cause for concern and it is something that we are keeping a very close eye on. It is important to stress that North Yorkshire Police is never complacent when it comes to protecting our communities. “However, there is a national context to the increases with more consistent and robust crime recording practices being implemented across the country.”

Creating a bypass fit for Selby’s future The second reconstruction phase of the A63 Selby bypass is finally nearing its conclusion At the time of going to press, work was on schedule for completion in early September with the contractor able to work 24-hour days to keep the project on track.

Wishing Well roundabouts. Phase one, from the A1041 Bawtry Road to the A19 at Barlby, was completed last year. The third phase will cover the A19 Doncaster Road to A1238 Leeds Road.

Local people have campaigned for these repairs for several years, and the investment in this latest phase is a big step towards ensuring Selby has a bypass fit for purpose to support the town’s economic future.

The second phase will cost £2.8m. Phase one cost £2.4m. The cost of the latest phase is higher because it includes repairs to the roundabouts and three bridge decks as well as the road. Discussions about responsibility for funding the repairs are going on between the county council and Highways England, which was responsible, through its contractor Skanska, for the original construction.

This is the second phase of a three-phase project that involves deep repair and reinstatement of the carriageway. Phase two covers the stretch of the A63 between and including the A19 Brayton and A1041

£1M STRENGTHENING OF CAWOOD BRIDGE MOVES CLOSER Approval in principle has been given to a £1m scheme to strengthen Cawood Bridge to increase its capacity from 7.5 tonnes to 10 tonnes. Major strengthening of the bridge took place in 1986 and a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes was placed on it with an exemption for public service vehicles weighing less than nine tonnes. This arrangement continued until it was established that Department for Transport guidance stated structural limits applied to all types of vehicle and an exemption could not be made for buses. Recent assessment has shown that 10 tonne capacity, which would allow larger buses to use the bridge again, can be achieved by adding a steel plate to the transoms that carry the road between the main outer girders. The cost is estimated at £1m and the bridge would need

to be closed for at least 20 weeks while the work is done. Approval in principle of this plan has been given by the County Council’s executive members for business and environmental services. Subject to the consideration of any objections, a final decision will be taken later this year. Work would be likely to start later in this financial year. The only feasible way of increasing the weight limit beyond 10 tonnes would be to replace the bridge at a cost in the region of £8.6m. County Councillor Andrew Lee, Member for Cawood and Saxton, said: “A large investment like this is brilliant news for Cawood. It will lead, hopefully, to a greater choice of bus service for locals and will mean the bridge will continue to serve Cawood and the surrounding villages for many years to come.”

LOCALS HELP TO UNCOVER CENTURIES-OLD TURNPIKE AT TOWTON They were hoping to uncover a Roman road in Towton, and while a group of locals didn’t succeed in that particular quest on a recent archaeological dig, they have unearthed the surface of a mid-18th century turnpike on Old London Road. The local volunteers were supporting professional archaeologists from the University of York on the project which took place over five days. The dig was led by Towton Parish Council and backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is known that the road, which follows the Battlefield Trail, was used during medieval times around the time of the Battle of Towton in 1461. Archaeologists now believe it may be much older than originally thought, possibly dating back to the Roman period. Councillor Graham Webb told Locate: “This project was vital not only in terms of investigating the heritage of this ancient road, which is now used as a public bridleway, but also because there is funding remaining to resurface parts of the bridleway to improve access for future generations.

10

“While a Roman road wasn’t found, we were very interested to unearth the surface of a turnpike dating back to the mid-18th century, and geophysical work, which was carried out on the fields on either side of the excavated area, may reveal other elements to add to the overall picture in due course.” Graham noted the tremendous support from volunteers, landowners, the local community and general public that visited the site to watch the work. Excavation Project Director, Tim Sutherland, told us: “It’s a shame we didn’t find a Roman road - but that doesn’t mean to say there isn’t one close by! Other evidence suggests there could be. It was a well organised and valuable dig - let’s hope we get another chance to excavate soon in this fascinating landscape.”

funding a Saturday scheme which provides a place for local children to learn and develop, offering much needed respite for parents.

Rugby league legend Garry Schofield OBE and chef and author Peter Sidwell are ambassadors for the charity and are expected to be guests at the ball on Saturday, October 28.

David told Locate: “We are appealing for prizes large or small which can be used in a silent auction and raffle. In the past they have included vouchers, weekend breaks, super car experiences and holidays. Basically, nothing is too small or indeed too large, so if there are individuals or businesses out there who can help us, it would be very much appreciated.”

David Brown is a Snappy patron and fundraiser and organises the annual ball each year – to date, it has raised more than £20,000 for the charity, specifically

Police station move Plans to relocate Selby police to the site of the District Council civic centre and Selby hospital have moved a step closer over recent weeks, with approval for the proposal now in place from the Council’s Executive The move is designed to save the public purse and will make it easier for the police to work with other organisations delivering local services. “I genuinely believe this will allow us to deliver an even better level of policing across the Selby district,” explained Acting Deputy Chief Constable, Paul Kennedy. “It will also represent better value for money, ensuring we can invest in people not property”. For the District Council, the move is part of a longterm plan to work more closely with other public sector organisations. The civic centre site is already shared with the hospital, and County Council staff already work from the building. Planning permission is now required for the changes needed to enable the police to move in, and this process will begin soon.

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green shares her expertise on making the most of your local media outlets and taking your PR strategy to the next level…

Get noisy with PR For many businesses PR is the last thing they consider when communicating information about their products and service, so how do you use it to your best advantage? Well, firstly make sure your story really is news. Have you won a new contract, introduced a new product or service, employed a new member of staff, won an award, hit any milestones? Remember this is not a novel so 300 to 400 words is sufficient and think about who, what, when, how and why as a framework for the piece. How have other companies

got their message across? Have they taken photo opportunities, given opinions to the media, held competitions, used testimonials, written blogs, held charity events? There are lots of ways to raise your profile. Create an attention-grabbing headline that ensures people want to read further and keep it focused on the news angle. There is an old saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, and this is very true so make sure you include a great photo with your press release. Build up a rapport with local journalists. Work in partnership with them and it is a win-win situation - they get some great articles for their publication and you get

Issue 26 - August / September 2016 to raise your profile. Then, look very carefully at the type of stories they publish so you can tailor your offer to them. Make a note of their email address at the bottom of the article and engage with them on social media so they begin to recognise you. As with all things in business, test and measure, look how much coverage you are getting and that the message is getting through to potential clients. So in summary: • Provide an attention-grabbing headline, punchy text, give facts and figures if you have them and include a quote from your business (and maybe one from a happy customer). • End with a call to action and give details how people can engage with you/find out more. • Include a note to the editor with brief details of you and your business. • Include contact details and send a picture. • Do not rush into PR and marketing campaigns, think about what your goals are, what impression you want to give and the key message you want to get across.
