Bridge repair works on to The wait is over - work on Tadcaster Bridge is finally set to be completed in the New Year Stonemasons are now rebuilding the pier and arches for Tadcaster Bridge, as the next stage of the construction work takes place. The bridge was destroyed during the floods last winter and contractors have been working around the clock to get the job done as quickly as possible. Even the stone for the new bridge is being cut on site. There’s been a slight delay in the works because of higher than expected river levels. This was caused by railway bridge improvements taking place further down the river at Ulleskelf that caused a back-up of water at Tadcaster.
But all hope is not lost - the bridge works are set to be completed in the New Year. The bridge is set to play a role in the Tour de Yorkshire, which will take place in Tadcaster at the end of April 2017. See page 33 for more on this. The County Council has used the rebuilding of the bridge as an opportunity to make much-needed improvements. The new crossing will be wider than the previous bridge which will leave more space for pedestrians, and there will also be better street lighting. We can’t wait to see the completed bridge and the whole of Tadcaster connected again.
Residents were unhappy with the delays as currently the river can only be crossed using a temporary footbridge.

GETTING INTO THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS Soot and Colours is a brand new children’s Christmas story with an incredibly heartwarming background Ex-miner, Ronnie Munro, has written and published a children’s Christmas book in a bid to raise money to run socially inclusive family Christmas parties for children in the Selby and Doncaster area.
‘This year we decided we needed to be more creative in raising money for the charity. Two elves entertain the children at the parties so I thought it would be a good idea to write a book about them - that’s when Soot and Colours was born.’
Ronnie, chair of charity Spirit of Christmas and author of Soot and Colours, told Locate: ‘My wife Diane and I set up Spirit of Christmas almost eight years ago to give something back to our brilliant community and put a big smile on the faces of disadvantaged children in the area.’
The charity usually runs three parties per year - two at Brayton near Selby and the third at Carcroft near Doncaster.
Many children who attend the Spirit of Christmas parties are from socially excluded groups. Children and their parents gain free entry via Kinship Carers and Children’s Services. Once a person gains entry to a party, everything is included for free such as party games, a visit to Santa with a present, souvenir photo, a snack box for each child and complimentary refreshments and cake for adults. The parties cost in the region of £2,000 per annum to run and the charity has published Soot and Colours as part of this year’s fundraising activities. Ronnie told us: ‘We have been applying for funding for a number of years now but regardless of the fact Spirit of Christmas reaches out to some of the poorest people in the community, our applications have all been turned down.
8
Soot and Colours is available from Amazon for £5.99 and all profits go to Spirit of Christmas and their Christmas parties. For more information about the book or parties contact admin@spiritofchristmas.org.uk.

Proud family business moves into its third generation of care Riccall Care is an independent, family-run, domiciliary care company based in Escrick that has developed an excellent reputation for delivering high quality care to vulnerable adults. It has recently been awarded Family Business of the Year and Overall Business of the Year at the York Press Awards In 1984, accountant Peter and social worker Sheila Lawson sold their family home and moved to Riccall to open Riccall House residential home with their daughter Gill. Together they ran all aspects of the care home and looked after the residents with compassion and complete dedication. Following the passing of the Community Care Act in 1993, the business diversified and began providing care at home to elderly and vulnerable adults. In 1998, Peter and Sheila retired and Gill’s husband Tony, a plumber by trade, took courses in book-keeping and IT in order to take over management of the company finances. The company now employs over 200 people and their team of trained, dedicated staff can be responsible for the care of up to 500 clients at any one time from York, Selby and the surrounding villages. Providing care in the most part to elderly clients, the company also supports adults with mental health needs, learning disabilities, sensory impairment, and chronic and terminal illness. Gill and Tony’s strong business and personal relationship has enabled them to raise five children as well as ensuring their business grew and the couple now own four care homes alongside Riccall Care. Their
10
eldest daughter Sarah was one of the original care workers for the company prior to becoming a nurse, and son-in-law Mike Richards is the Director of Operations. Their youngest daughter Lucy also worked for the company before becoming a health-care assistant at a neurological rehabilitation clinic, and earlier this year, their second daughter Helen and her husband Adam joined the business to ensure the continuity, growth and delivery of high-quality home care. Helen told Locate: ‘My parents have always kept me informed about Riccall Care but it’s great to be able to play a real and permanent role in the family business now. It’s always been such a huge part of the family and I’m really excited and proud to be a part of something that my family are all so passionate about.’ One of the things that make Riccall Care stand out is its fully-equipped training suite and accredited care training courses. In 2013, the family took the unusual step for a small care business by creating their own training department to ensure high-quality care giving. The training is available to all care sector workers, private individuals and businesses and offers vital learning and support to anyone with a care responsibility.
Issue 28 - December 2016 / January 2017
Gill told Locate: ‘I’m really proud of our training department. Ensuring that the quality of care delivered to both our residents and clients is the highest standard possible is our main priority and excellent training is key to making this happen.’ Riccall Care is always looking for ways to develop and innovate, and recently began promoting a free monthly dementia-friendly Care Café offering professional advice alongside companionship and support for those caring for friends and relatives at home, as well as a website
with ‘live chat’ for faster response and engagement. With a third generation of family firmly on board, Riccall Care looks set to continue expanding and improving as time goes on. And you could be involved - Riccall Care is always looking for new carers to join their team. Gill said: ‘Caring isn’t easy but it is incredibly rewarding. We encourage anyone interested to get in touch on 01904 720700 and find out if a job at Riccall Care is for them – it might be the best move they ever make.’
We’re here to help you and your loved ones live happily at home for as long as you wish Award-winning, family owned and managed, we provide home care throughout York, Selby and surrounding villages for the elderly and vulnerable, helping to ensure their comfort and freedom in the security of their own homes. Selby’s new Community Navigators scheme has officially been launched A new scheme that aims to help people remain healthy, well and independent in the Selby area has launched. The Community Navigators scheme helps members of the public access advice, support and information about activities in the local community. The activities promote health, well-being and support to enable people to live an independent lifestyle. The launch event took place at the Civic Centre in Selby and was attended by new volunteer Community Navigators, community groups who provide information to the navigators and representatives from the two organisations that support the scheme – North Yorkshire County Council and Selby District Council. The project is delivered on their behalf by Selby and District DIAL and Age UK Selby District. Anne-Marie Oldroyd, Project Co-ordinator from Selby and District DIAL said: ‘It was fantastic to bring everyone together who has worked so hard to get this
scheme off the ground and say thank you to them for their support. We have a lovely group of volunteers who have joined the scheme and have been great advocates for everyone using the service. It’s been a privilege being involved and we look forward to the service going from strength to strength.’ Volunteer Community Navigators are people in local communities who have a good knowledge of groups, organisations and services and can help other people access them. They provide others with clear information and support to help them make their own decisions and choices. Since the scheme first surfaced two months ago, more than 600 enquiries have been received with a 98 per cent client satisfaction rate. If you would like to volunteer to become a Navigator, or would like to find out more about the scheme, please contact Age UK Selby District on 01757 704115 or Selby and District DIAL on 01757 210495.

Nature reserve set for profile boost Selby District Council and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust are exploring plans to boost the profile of local nature reserve, Barlow Common The future of the Barlow Common Nature Reserve is looking bright as Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Selby District Council have agreed to work together to raise the profile of the site. Over the last four years, the Trust has carried out some fantastic work on behalf of the Council and, as a result, Barlow Common is a thriving nature reserve. At a recent meeting, the Council and Wildlife Trust discussed how the partnership can work together to raise the profile of what is an important site in our community. The Council will continue to support the work of the Wildlife Trust, enabling more people from across the district to enjoy the Nature Reserve. The partnership also agreed to engage with other stakeholders to improve accessibility to the site,

enhancing the future potential of this community asset. Cllr Richard Musgrave, Lead Councillor for Housing, Leisure, Health and Culture, said: ‘Barlow Common Nature Reserve is much loved by our community. ‘It’s good news for this area that the Council and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust are striving to deliver the highest standards of habitat management, alongside good accessibility for members of the public.’ As well as managing the wildlife habitat, the Trust has developed a volunteer group to support the site and has carried out regular surveys to record and monitor the types and number of species that inhabit the reserve. The Trust has also worked hard to make the reserve more accessible for all by introducing gravel footpaths so those with wheelchairs and pushchairs can access social hotspots such as the picnic areas.

’TOUR DE TADCASTER’ AS TOWN IS SET FOR SCHOOLCHILDREN’S STARRING RACE ROLE
SPACE SUCCESS IS OUT OF THIS WORLD
Pupils at Read School were thrilled when they met astronaut Tim Peake at the Principia conference In association with the UK Space Agency and Tim Peake’s stay on the International Space Station, a group of pupils from Read School were invited to make a presentation at the Principia conference being held at York University. Science teacher Liz Jackson asked her Year 8 pupils to make an application for the conference, based on a ‘Mission to Mars’ topic they had studied in Year 7, which included Rocket Science experiments. They were amazed and delighted to not only be selected to attend the conference, but to be asked to make their presentation on stage; one of only eight KS3 groups to do so.
20
The presentation was deemed to be ‘brilliant’ by Jeremy Curtis, the head of education and skills at the UK Space Agency, and the group were thrilled to be introduced to Tim Peake himself and spend time chatting to him about their presentation. Liz Jackson said: ‘Tim Peake’s visit to the International Space Station has inspired many educational opportunities involving up to a million children nationwide. We feel very lucky to have been able to participate in it – the pupils have gained such a lot from this experience.’

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green shares her expertise on finding and keeping customers
How to keep hold of customers You worked hard to start your business and tell people about what you do, so how do you continue to manage that awareness? Every business needs customers - it’s difficult to achieve growth without new ones. However, ignoring existing customers is bad business and fails to recognise opportunities that are right under your nose. New customer acquisition is many times the cost of retention yet most businesses fail to embrace the importance of the customers they already have. Customers have lots of choice so how do you get and maintain their attention?
One way to attract and retain customers is through providing excellent customer service - you will need to ensure you have their loyalty to make them come back again as well as recommending you to others. While focus is often on the customer service experience at the time of the sale, what about delivering a great experience between sales too? Maintaining and building a customer relationship is the bedrock of building your business and often the basis for differentiation between you and your competitors. Add to that the fact that people buy from businesses they know, like and trust – where does that put you and your company?

Issue 28 - December 2016 / January 2017 Everyone has experience of poor customer service, so how do you ensure that your customers feel valued? What’s the essence of finding and keeping customers? Adding value to your products or services through pricing, quality, reliability and customer service establishes the basis for customers to keep you at the forefront of their thoughts. Not maintaining contact or failing to listen to your customer needs or even admitting mistakes when they happen, all serve to enhance customer negative response. Once a customer buys from you there is no guarantee they will return so how can you encourage them to do so? They may not need you every day so you need to be there when they do. If all this was easy, everyone would be doing it so make sure your business is the exception. Always make promises you can keep, don’t mislead with ambiguous offers or information and reward them for their loyalty so they can become advocates of your business. At Business Support York & North Yorkshire we have 30 years’ experience helping businesses find and keep customers, and run courses on a wide range of business topics. Get in touch and see how we can help you on 01904 699590.

COMMUNITY CENTRE RISES FROM THE ASHES Rebuild work on the brand new Harold Mills Community Centre in Sherburn in Elmet has started Back in April, a fire destroyed the Harold Mills Community Centre in Sherburn in Elmet. It completely ruined the much-loved centre so a project to rebuild it was launched. Selby District Council has been working closely with people who live in the area on the project. Almost 30 people that regularly used the centre came along to a drop-in consultation event recently to talk to the Council. Feedback at the event confirmed that people wanted their new centre rebuilt along the same lines as the old building. It was also arranged for members of the Community Centre committee to visit Kelcbar Community Centre in Tadcaster so they could see a thriving example of a well-used and popular community hub. This will help to gather ideas for the future of the Harold Mills building - which is set to be very exciting. Members of the Council are currently working out exactly how the interior will take shape and considering what facilities will be needed. Possibilities being considered for the centre include an outdoor area with benches. What we are sure about though is that it will be modern, fit-for-purpose and be fully equipped with wi-fi. We can’t wait to see the centre back up and running.

Business of the
month
Specialising in bespoke hardwood conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms, Allerthorpe Conservatories near Pocklington employs a team of craftsmen dedicated to individuality and style
Directors Mark Grice and James Pethullis have decades of experience in the industry and pride themselves on running a unique business where pushy salesmen don’t exist. Every customer enjoys direct contact with either Mark or James who both have a deep understanding of high-class joinery. Mark, when was the business founded? I formed Allerthorpe Conservatories in 2000 with my fellow director James Pethullis. We are both time-served joiners with 40 years’ experience in the industry. The meticulous training and attention to detail we learned during our apprenticeships all those years ago are what drive our business today. Can you tell us a little bit about Allerthorpe Conservatories? We wanted to offer a premium specialised service which is a little more upmarket than your standard window, door and conservatory specialist. We are a small, unique business and myself and James are always involved directly with the design, manufacture and installation of every conservatory. Why did you decide to be your own boss? Prior to establishing Allerthorpe Conservatories with James, I was
30
self-employed for 30 years, so being my own boss comes naturally to me. We like to be in control of our own destiny and develop the business as we choose. What makes you different to other similar businesses? The level of service we offer is, we believe, second to none. Our products are bespoke and specialised and as such our customers benefit from one single point of contact from start to finish. We don’t employ sales people. Not many businesses similar to ours can make that claim. We often say that we are craftsmen, not salesmen. Do you have any interesting or amusing stories from your time running the business that you’d like to share with our readers? We both pride ourselves on blending seamlessly into people’s homes and busy lives while they are undergoing renovations. We aim to make the process as painless as
possible and in the past we’ve even been known to get stuck in with domestic chores such as pet sitting and walking, hanging the washing out and even taking dinner out of the oven! From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? While we’re based in Pocklington, we cover the whole of North Yorkshire and we’re consistently busy. We’re passionate about the local area and about providing the best possible service and product to our customers, whether they’re looking to create more space, add value to their home or craft an individual feature. What does the future hold for Allerthorpe Conservatories? It goes without saying that our commitment to providing a high level of personal service and a bespoke end product will continue. Looking ahead, we have ambitions to scale up and expand our team of craftsmen.

‘Tour de Tadcaster’ all set to race into town this summer
It’s been confirmed that Tadcaster is to host a start or finish of the Tour de Yorkshire 2017 The town has faced a turbulent year, with flooding over Christmas leading to the collapse of the main bridge which cut the town in two. Selby District Council bid for the town’s involvement in the race to support residents and businesses during this difficult period. Race organisers Welcome to Yorkshire have announced six start and finish locations for next year’s race. Details of the route between these, including the race route through Tadcaster, will follow over the coming months. Leader of Selby District Council, Cllr Mark Crane, explained his delight at the confirmation of Tadcaster’s involvement. He said: ‘This will be a massive boost for traders and residents and it’s well deserved after a really tough year. We know from our experience of hosting a start in Selby in 2015 and from being on the route of this year’s race that there is enormous benefit to taking part – that’s why we backed a bid for Tadcaster.
‘We think this can deliver a long-term boost for the town too, not just on race day. People from around the world watch the event on TV, and what a perfect way to show off the town. Tadcaster is a great centre for cycling too, and based on the support we got from the town for its part in the 2016 race, I’m confident that people will really get behind this and make the most of the fantastic opportunity.’ It’s likely that the newly restored bridge will feature in the race, with work scheduled to be complete over the coming months. As part of the repair work, the bridge is being widened and strengthened, making it safer and more secure for the longterm. The Selby district has featured in both the 2015 and 2016 Tour de Yorkshire races. The town hosted a stage start in 2015 and the 2016 race passed through Cawood and Tadcaster on day one, with Sherburn and Monk Fryston on the route for day two, which also included the women’s race.
