Inclusive music-making group is o We all know that music brings people together, and that is especially true at Junior Inclusive Music Projects (IMPs), a new weekly singing and signing group for 5-10 year olds that has come about thanks to generous funding from Youth Music and the Ed De Nunzio Charitable Trust. The group, which recently won a York Culture Award, meets every Monday during term time at Burton Stone Community Centre in York from 4.30pm to 5.30pm. IMPs members include children with a range of disabilities, siblings and friends of disabled members and children who simply love making music. Learning & Participation Co-ordinator Cathy Grant told Locate: ‘Singing and signing is a fun way to build confidence and develop skills in communication and music making. IMP members learn to sing and sign, write their own songs and original compositions, take part in public performances and, most importantly, have a lot of fun and make new friends.’

The group is run by Accessible Arts and Media, which also offers Senior IMPs, a weekly music group for young people aged 11+, and holiday clubs in the Easter and Summer holidays. There is now also the opportunity to work towards a qualification via the Arts Award. Cathy Grant told us: ‘I have recently trained as an Arts Award Adviser, which means young people can now work towards qualifications that are nationally recognised, and at the higher level, can be equivalent to a GCSE. ‘You don’t need any previous musical experience to join IMPs, and we support everyone to take part in the way that works best for them. We’re a friendly bunch and we love welcoming new members, so come and give us a try!’ To see the IMP members perform live, head along to Millthorpe School on Saturday, March 4 at 2.30pm. For more information and to book tickets for the concert at Millthorpe School, email imps@aamedia. org.uk or call 01904 626965. Visit the website at www.aamedia.org.uk

EM PEOPLE-IMPR LIVES THROUGH

Nestled within a row of shops opposite the impressive Sel Em People-a charity, art studio and shop in Selby which su with learning difficulties and helps to promote employabi

The studio, which opened in September last year, aims to be a place where young people can develop their artistic talents and passions without restriction. The artists create and sell their work at the studio, with members of the public more than welcome to come in and share the space. They can draw, print, make cushions or furniture or simply relax with a coffee. All funds raised by the newly founded charity will be put towards resources for the studio, such as maintenance to keep the studio running, computer, printers and arts and craft supplies. This means that your funds will be going directly toward keeping these students’ dreams alive. The Em People studio will work closely with the Blueberry Academy and Personal Learning Pathway (PLP) programmes.

Council link-up delivers £1.5m sa Over one-and-a-half million pounds has been saved during the first three years of an innovative collaboration between North Yorkshire County Council and Selby District Council called Better Together The two councils have been working together to see where they can improve services for customers by working more effectively together, or where savings can be achieved by pooling resources or through joint procurement. In the Selby district, the County Council delivers services such as highways, education and social care. The District Council delivers services such as waste and recycling, leisure and housing. Both councils cover the same residents. It’s now just over three years since the two councils put in place joint senior management arrangements. During this time, numerous links have been made with the aim of delivering better value for taxpayers’ money such as the two councils linking up their telephone systems, which alone has made an annual

saving of £20,000. Over £50,000 has been saved so far-with more to come-through the joint procurement of a print and copying contract. And that’s not all; £100,000 has been saved in the first year of a new joint finance function, which also supports a range of other joint initiatives. The two councils have also been looking at how they can work together to improve the service for their joint customers. For example, the County Council’s registrar service now operates from the District Council’s modern civic centre office, supporting better access to the service in improved surroundings. Meanwhile, the District Council’s assets team-which looks after the council’s 3,000 homes-is now working alongside the County Council’s highways team in Selby.

Enjoy the luck of the Irish in the heart of York A section of York city centre will celebrate all things Irish over the St Patrick’s Day weekend For the third consecutive year, St Sampson’s Square will host the city’s annual St Patrick’s Festival in March. Organised by the York Irish Association, the celebrations kick off on Friday, March 17 at 5.00pm and continue throughout Saturday, March 18, from 11.30am to 10.30pm. The festival includes music from the likes of Róisín Bán and The Flying Donkeys, Irish dancing performances from the O’Connor Academy of Irish Dance and St Aelred’s School of Irish Dance, and ceilidhs with Fiddlerswreck and The New Fox Band. There will also be Irish food and drink served and face painting throughout the weekend. Brendan Tannam of the York Irish Association told

Locate: ‘The festival is all about celebrating Irish tradition and culture, and bringing fun and enjoyment to York for people of all ages, whether or not they have any Irish connections. ‘There will be something for everyone and we’re looking forward to welcoming people young and old to come and enjoy the fun.’ It is thought that the 2016 event attracted up to 2,000 people over the course of the weekend, and it is hoped that this year’s festival will be even more successful. The St Patrick’s Festival is open to all and is free to attend, so why not pop along and discover more about Ireland and its traditions. For more information, visit www.yorkirish.co.uk

COUNCIL URGES‘DON’T BE A WASTER’ The council is urging residents to waste less food as part of a new project Selby District Council has launched a 12-month project to clean up the district and tackle important issues such as litter, fly tipping, waste, recycling and dog fouling. The ‘Don’t be a Waster – reduce, reuse, respect’ campaign will focus on a different issue each month and work with parish councils, community groups and local businesses to make a difference to the local area. February is all about putting the spotlight on food waste with a roadshow being held in Selby on Monday, February 20 where acclaimed Yorkshire chef Nigel Brown will give a leftover food cookery demonstration. North Yorkshire Rotters will also be in attendance to answer questions about composting food waste. The Rotters are volunteers from across North Yorkshire who offer friendly advice and expertise to people in their local communities who want to reduce their food waste and save money. They believe they can help the average household save up to £720 per year by effective planning, storing and cooking with leftovers. March’s focus on fly tipping will see the council work with a local community group on an innovative art project to deter fly tipping at hot spots around the district. Later in the year, the campaign will look at dog fouling, reuse and repair, recycling furniture, graffiti and abandoned vehicles.

January focused on litter and included the popular social media campaign #1PieceOfRubbish, which encouraged residents to pick up a piece of litter and put it in the bin. Residents would take a photograph of themselves binning the litter and post it on social media using the hashtag #1PieceOfRubbish. People who took part won a variety of prizes including Summit Indoor Adventure gift vouchers, fish and chip suppers and a meal a month for a year at McDonald’s, Selby. Cllr Richard Musgrave, Selby District Council executive member with responsibility for housing, leisure, health and culture, told Locate: ‘We love our district. We’re proud of it and we want to encourage pride in our towns and villages. ‘It’s not just about the environmental benefits of less landfill and more recycling. This is bigger, better and wider than that. We want to bring together partners, community groups and the residents who already make a difference.’

Tadcaster gears up for the T It’s not long now until the world will cast their eyes on Tadcaster for the Tour de Yorkshire 2017 Locals were delighted to hear the town will be hosting the start of the one-day women’s race and the second stage of the men’s race on Saturday, April 29. The riders will start by crossing over the newly re-opened bridge before making a loop of the town centre. They’ll then head out towards Boston Spa and Wetherby on their way to Harrogate. Both the men’s and women’s races follow the same route. Plans are being developed to hold a festival in the town to help celebrate the Tour. The race is broadcast around the world and it’s a unique opportunity

to show off the town and the local area. Leader of Selby District Council, Cllr Mark Crane, told Locate: ‘Selby District Council is funding Tadcaster involvement in this year’s race as part of our efforts to support the town following the flooding of Christmas 2015. ‘We know from previous years that being a starting point for the race brings huge benefits, and this is a chance to show off our town to the world. ‘This latest roadshow is part of our efforts to get out and about to tell people more about the race and how

they make the most of this great opportunity. It’ll be of interest both to people living in the area and to local businesses too.’ With the bridge closed throughout last year, traders and residents have had a very difficult time. It’s hoped the Tour will help to bring visitors to the town and show the world that Tadcaster is very much open for business. You can find out more about the race online at www. letouryorkshire.com. Or to find out how community groups and businesses can make the most of the opportunity, you can visit the council’s website www.selby.gov.uk

£7.4M FUNDING BOOST FOR LOCAL VOLUNTARY SECTOR Over £7m of new funding has been secured for the community and voluntary sector in York, North Yorkshire and East Riding The funding will allow a new partnership of 61 organisations to ‘connect’ with community members who are furthest away from work and training. The three-year project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund and is managed by Your Consortium based in Knaresborough. The work on the ground will be undertaken by key workers and specialist intervention partners through a range of organisations in the voluntary and community sector. This project is one of the largest funding streams secured for a voluntary and community sector partnership in the area. It represents an exciting opportunity for local charities and voluntary organisations within the partnership to

20

demonstrate their effectiveness in supporting those most distant from work, training and volunteering. It will offer flexible support to help adults overcome physical, psychological, financial and skills-related barriers and progress towards employment, training, education and job search, while at the same time helping to combat a range of social issues including poverty and social exclusion. Selby District AVS is one of the partnership organisations that will be working on Action Towards Inclusion, offering keyworker and specialist intervention support. Tony Appleton, Chief Officer at SDAVS, told Locate: ‘This initiative will enable SDAVS to address the problems that are preventing some local people from finding work or entering into education or training.’

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green wants you to have confidence in yourself and your business

Have the mindset for success! How you think can have a direct impact on the success of your business. If you think you won’t succeed, it can become a selffulfilling prophecy, so self-belief and confidence are vital in achieving your personal and business goals. Your thoughts influence your emotions, which in turn influence your actions, which affect your results. Confidence in products, services, employees, finances and your future underpins all businesses-large or small. Business owners are responsible for driving

sales-thinking negatively can leave you feeling demotivated, anxious about the future or stressed. You are unlikely to contact customers or potential customers, sales calls won’t be made, you won’t ask for the sale and you risk becoming totally inactive in the business. The outcome is not reaching your targets for the week, month and even year. You still have your overheads to pay and the whole process starts again. So how do you break the circle of selfdestruction? Issue 29 - February / March 2017 these help you achieve your own personal goals? What actions are you going to take to get these results? How do you need to feel about yourself and your business to get these results? Every decision you make affects your business today, tomorrow and in the future. You need a good strategy that looks at all areas of your business. You need to learn to react positively and not negatively. Embrace change and see it as an opportunity. COUNCIL TAX DECISION DUE THIS FEBRUARY

By the end of this month you’ll know exactly how much your Council Tax will be, starting from April It’s Selby District Council’s name at the top of the bill, but they are urging people to recognise that their Council Tax money also goes to support lots of different organisations delivering lots of different services.

details by post of any changes to what you pay. Direct Debit is the easiest and most efficient way to pay. Most people pay in 10 monthly instalments, with no payments for two months of the year.

The District Council takes about 10 per cent of the final charge, with the rest of the money helping to support services run by North Yorkshire County Council, the police, fire and rescue services and your local parish or town council.

Direct Debits are only taken in the months when payments are due, and that means you don’t have to cancel it and set it up again each year. Direct Debit is also the most efficient way for the council to collect the money, which helps to keep down administration costs.

Final decisions on any increases for the next financial year-which starts on April 1-will be made by each organisation during February. You’ll then be sent

There’s support available for people on lower incomes and for those living alone. You can find out full details online–www.selby.gov.uk.

POLICE MOVE TO CIVIC CENTRE ON TARGET Work is now progressing to create a new police station at Selby District Council’s civic centre, following the recent granting of planning permission Part of the Civic Centre on Doncaster Road, Selby, will be developed as a police station and the car park will be extended for all staff working at the site, which includes the hospital too. The move is set to save taxpayers’ money as both North Yorkshire Police and Selby District Council are expected to make savings from the project. The new police station will be significantly cheaper to run than the existing building on Portholme Road, Selby. Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy of North Yorkshire Police said: ‘Co-locating with Selby District Council is a win-win situation. ‘It means we can run our buildings more economically, which benefits both taxpayers and North Yorkshire Police-and we’re also closer to the organisations we work with every day.

‘All this means we can focus our investments in people, not property, ensuring we can deliver a really high standard of policing for communities across the Selby district.’ Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: ‘Sharing a front counter with the council and having the local policing team working more closely with their council colleagues will only improve the service we can offer residents and businesses of Selby and the wider district.’ Leader of Selby District Council, Cllr Mark Crane, added: ‘This move forms part of our strategic longterm plan to work closely with our partners in the public sector family. We already share the Civic Centre site with the health service and colleagues from North Yorkshire County Council, and welcoming the police offers us additional benefits including closer working opportunities.’ Construction is expected to start shortly with the new station opening later this year.

Meet the Funders event gives local organisations a boost

A funding fair in Selby has given third-sector organisations a much-needed chance to meet with potential investors Community and voluntary groups from across the Selby District flocked to a Meet the Funder event at Community House, Selby, in a bid to gain help, advice and ultimately the funding needed to make their organisation thrive. National funding organisations such as the Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and UnLtd were joined at the event by regional funders such as the Coalfields Regeneration Trust and Two Ridings Community Foundation. The event, hosted by Selby District AVS and sponsored by Selby District Council, allowed local groups to talk face-to-face with the funders in a relaxed environment, gaining advice and information about the funding available to them. It was also a great opportunity to network with local groups.

Fencing – Suppliers of Agricultural & Domestic Fencing, Field & Driveway Gates, Decking & Sheds

Tony Appleton, Chief Officer at Selby District AVS, told Locate: ‘We were over the moon with the response we had from our Meet the Funder event. It was great to see well over a hundred people from various third-sector organisations in the district walk through the doors of Community House and leave feeling happy and excited about the future. ‘We hope to host more Meet the Funder events in the future and continue to support charitable, voluntary and community organisations in the Selby District.’ Selby District AVS is a local support and development organisation, a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Business of the

month

Phil Wimbles is taking pride in seeing his flooring business grow from strength to strength

For quality flooring and a friendly service, you don’t have to look any further than Selby-based Wimbles Carpets & Interiors. Phil aims to give you good, honest advice at prices to suit all budgets Phil, when did you set up Wimbles Carpets & Interiors? I set up the business in 2014, but before that I’d worked in carpets and flooring for over 30 years. It’s always a big step becoming your own boss, but the passion I have for the work I do gave me the motivation needed. It’s safe to say I’m really glad I made the decision. Can you tell us about the services you offer? I provide the people of Selby and anywhere across Yorkshire with a friendly, no-fuss carpet and flooring service. I always offer a free no-obligation visit where I provide advice and a quotation in an environment that suits the customer, and then from there we aim to begin making their vision become a reality. Whether a customer is looking for a bedroom carpet or full home, office or hotel carpeting, I’m here to help. What makes you stand out from other businesses offering

34

a similar service? At Wimbles, we really pride ourselves on customer service and going the extra mile. My priority is to make sure our customers are happy at every stage of the process-starting right from their free consultation. That means not pressuring them and simply offering them help and advice using my years of experience. From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? The great thing about Selby is that we are quite a close communityeverybody knows everybody-and that’s brilliant for me as I rely quite heavily on recommendations. If you do a great job, then word soon gets around, and that’s exactly what you want when running a business. So taking that into account, I’d say the local area was really great for businesses. What does the future hold for Wimbles Carpets & Interiors? My priority is to continue to

give a high-quality service to the community. I absolutely love the work I do and I’m passionate about making customers happy, so as long as I can continue to do that, you can bet that I will! Any interesting facts about Wimbles Carpets & Interiors? When I was younger, I hated my surname Wimbles. I’d get teased constantly due to its similarity to the ‘Wombles’. But now, as a businessman, I embrace the similarity because it makes people remember my business. I just have to remind them-it’s Wimbles not Wombles! Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? I think it’s really crucial to have a recognisable brand and a large presence across as many platforms as possible, so it’s important to advertise in local magazines such as Locate.

Nurturing our future football stars

Plenty of homegrown young footballing talent is emerging in the York area, thanks to the All Star Football Academy It offers weekly development coaching for all age groups from under-6’s to under-16’s, as well as school holiday football clubs and Rising Stars coaching sessions for 3-5 year olds. The aim is to bridge the gap between grass-roots football clubs and professional academies. The key focus is a player-centred approach, where youngsters gain a greater knowledge and development of all areas of the game, including the technical, tactical, social, psychological and physical elements. Chris Dowson runs the York South branch of All Star. He told Locate: ‘Most of our young members already have a keen interest in football through playing for their local team, but we also welcome those who are just starting out. ‘We are passionate about embedding a thorough

understanding and love for the game in all of our boys and girls, from the age of three and upwards.’ The York South branch of All Star runs development sessions on Wednesday evenings at York Sports Village from 5pm-7pm. The Rising Stars (3-5 year olds) meet at Burnholme Community Hub on Tuesdays between 4pm-5pm. There are also school holiday clubs which are open to boys and girls of all abilities between the ages of 5 and 14. In addition to York South, there are also branches covering Hambleton, Leeds and the rest of York. For more information visit the website at www. asfayorksouth.co.uk or search All Star Football Academy York South on Facebook. Chris Dowson can be contacted at info@asfayorksouth.co.uk
