Tadcaster Bridge sets the literary world on fire! Local author, Tony Morgan, has featured Tadcaster Bridge in his very first novel Tony Morgan, 51, from Tadcaster, makes reference to an older version of the bridge in his first novel, REMEMBER REMEMBER THE 6TH OF NOVEMBER. As the title suggests, the book is based around the events of the Gunpowder Plot and features spies, government surveillance, terrorism, treachery and torture. Think contemporary thriller, set in an earlier time frame. The novel is set in the first week of November 1605, in the run up to the culmination of the Gunpowder Plot. In essence, it is a fictional account of the real-life events. Although, if the title is anything to go by, there are set

6

to be a few twists along the way. Although much of the action is set in London, there is a local theme that runs throughout the book. As well as Tadcaster Bridge making an appearance, Guy Fawkes also features in scenes set in York and Almscliffe Crag near Harrogate. Profits made from the novel in 2016 will be shared equally between Tadcaster Flood Support and Fundraising Group and Save the Children. Tony told Locate: ‘Having seen the devastation caused by the flooding in Tadcaster and the issues since with the bridge, I wanted to be able to pay tribute and contribute to the great work going on in the town.’ For more information and to buy the book online for £1.99, visit www.6thnovember.com

Residents welcome new council houses For the first time in 25 years, Selby District Council has announced it is building brand new council homes in the district Five new bungalows will be built at East Acres and St Edwards Close, in Byram providing much-needed accommodation for older and vulnerable residents. Council bosses met with local residents earlier this month to discuss the new development. Leader of the Council, Cllr Mark Crane said: ‘This new development will help provide five homes for older or vulnerable people directly in the area where they need them.’ The District Council’s Chief Executive Janet Waggott added: ‘It is an exciting time to be part of a council that is leading the way by building brand new council homes. These homes will be built to high standards and will provide homes for vulnerable and older people in the heart of the community. ‘This development supports our long-term plans to improve the supply of housing and ensure that the homes required in our district are built where they are needed.’

Work on Tadcaster Bri It has been confirmed that work will progress as planned on Tadcaster Bridge, following the withdrawal of an objection to planning permission to widen and strengthen the structure. The District Council gave permission to the bridge works at a meeting in September, but then received a letter of objection from Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery: this has since been withdrawn in a move that has been welcomed by both councils. North Yorkshire County Council will now press ahead with the work to widen and strengthen the bridge, linking the two sides of the town once again. Tadcaster has been left divided since the 18th-century Grade II structure partially collapsed in the flooding over last Christmas. Leader of Selby District Council, Cllr Mark Crane, explained: ‘This is great news for the whole town, as it means that the repair and improvement works can now go ahead as planned. People living in Tadcaster and local businesses have suffered long enough through

the loss of their bridge and although we have in place a temporary footbridge, what we really need is the main road open once more across the river.’ North Yorkshire County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Highways, added, ‘It has been a long-standing aspiration of the County Council and the people of the town to improve the bridge and now we have a marvellous opportunity to deliver on this. ‘In the long-term, these improvements will help our businesses and residents and also offer important structural improvements to help protect the bridge against future flooding.’ To enable it to press ahead with the work, the County Council’s contractor is to begin 24-hour working on Tadcaster Bridge. Work on the bridge is dependent on river levels, and the move to 24-hour working is in anticipation of worsening autumn and winter weather that could affect water levels. Every effort will be made to keep noise to a minimum during overnight work. The aim is for work to be completed by the end of this year, depending on weather conditions.

Is it almost pantomime time? Oh yes it is! Once upon a time in The Parish of Taddy on the Wharfe, lived a beautiful Princess… Ladies and gentlemen, prepare yourselves for a panto with a very local twist This November, Tadcaster Theatre Company will present Sleeping Beauty, a pantomime for all the family which has been specially adapted by scriptwriter Alan P Frayn to be set in 21st-century Tadcaster. Before midnight on her 16th birthday, Princess Rose, played by Kelly Bolland, shall prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die unless she is moved to the other side of the river where spinning wheels haven’t been invented yet. Bad Witch Hazel (Alison Davies) creates a terrible storm to have the ancient Wharfe bridge washed away forever.

Catherine Marshall, chairman of the theatre company, said: ‘With the current situation regarding the broken bridge and the town being divided in two, we thought it would be a great idea to have this year’s pantomime adapted to provide us with a fresh up-to-date angle on an old classic. ‘Thank you to Alan for re-writing his script at no additional charge and Balfour Beatty, especially Site Manager Dave Robinson, for allowing us to take promotional photographs at the bridge in Tadcaster,’ she added. 50 per cent of ticket sales profit will be donated to the Tadcaster Flood Support and Fundraising Group.

Are you on the Pathway to Health? A new scheme by North Yorkshire County Council could see hundreds of locals transform their health through walking Brand new waymarked walking routes around Selby have been created as part of a project to help people get out and about in their local community. The scheme is being pioneered by North Yorkshire County Council in partnership with the District Council and local NHS. Seven ‘Pathways to health’ routes have been created, varying in distance from just over one mile to nine miles. It’s part of a push to support people to be more active, which can help to reduce the risk of major illnesses. Walking is also a great way of reducing stress and fatigue, increasing energy levels and concentration.

16

The guided walks are a great way to get started, to stretch your legs, meet new people and get some fresh air in the local countryside. Health walks are free to join and you don’t need any specialist equipment, just comfy shoes. Going for a two-mile walk four times a week can reduce weight by one pound a month and people who do regular physical activity also have up to an 83 per cent lower risk of osteoarthritis. Walking is a great form of exercise for someone who hasn’t been active in a while. It is free, low impact and you don’t need any special equipment.

If you don’t feel confident enough to go for a walk alone yet, or you are nervous about getting out and about, there are guided health walks in the Selby area that you can go along to.

When embarking on a ‘Pathways to health’ walk, the council wants you to always be safe by planning ahead and following the signs. Keep dogs under close control, protect plants and animals and take your litter home. Leave gates and property as you find them and always consider other people.

The health walks are led by a qualified walk leader and range in length from 30 minutes to an hour.

You can join a health walk in Selby by calling Craig Walker on 01757 293286.

Leeds East Airport ready for take off Could you be jetting off for your next holiday from Church Fenton? A former RAF base in Church Fenton is hoping to become the county’s first international airport. The former base, which has been transformed into Leeds East Airport, has been granted a licence by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to operate chartered flights from 2017. Makin Enterprise, who own the airport, are hoping to operate four ‘VIP’ flights a day to places such as Malaga in Spain, Faro in Portugal and Cannes on the French Riviera. The flights will be first class and will cost around £1,000 return, featuring VIP service from the moment passengers reach the airport until they arrive at their destination. But nothing is set in stone yet, as Selby District Council released a statement saying that planning permission would be required before the any public commercial flights from the airport could be operated.

20

They said: ‘If planning permission is submitted – and this would be a matter for the site owners - the Council’s role would be to consider the application in terms of the impact and benefit for the local community and wider district. ‘This would be considered in terms of long-term development plans for the district, which seek to deliver sustainable growth and open up new business opportunities while supporting the needs of our rural communities. ‘We have an ongoing constructive dialogue with the site owners and have been in regular contact with them. We’re aware of their long-term ambitions for the site.’ The airfield was built in the 1930s and served as a fighter base throughout World War Two. Businessman Chris Makin purchased it two years ago after it was closed by the Ministry of Defence in December 2013.

Battling mental health is much easier with a friend Two local women have discovered an unexpected bond through an exciting volunteering programme at Community House, Selby. Hayley Richards, 36, from Selby, has schizophrenia and has been visiting Community House on Portholme Road since August to attend a number of courses held by mental health awareness charity, York Mind. The courses are part of the charity’s Befriending service which focuses on providing emotional support to adults experiencing mental health difficulties. As well as running various courses, the Befriending service matches adults with ill mental health to a volunteer, also known as a ‘Befriender’. They are matched based on shared interests and together engage in a range of community-based activities for two hours a week such as going for walks or chatting over coffee. In August, Hayley was matched with Joanne Bell, 47, from Brayton. The duo have since met for coffee, been shopping and formed an inspiring bond along the way. Joanne said: ‘I’m so glad I became a Befriender. Hayley has been through some really tough times and I feel

privileged to be able to spend time with her, make her feel less isolated and hopefully improve her quality of life.’ Hayley, who often struggled to leave the house before seeking help from York Mind, said: ‘I was terrified the first morning I walked into Community House but I’m so glad I did it. ‘The reception team made me feel so comfortable and Hannah Hessle from York Mind calmed me down and made me feel welcome. ‘Having a friend like Joanne is great and I really enjoy spending time with her. It’s good to be able to speak about my illness and not feel judged. ‘I’m learning to live with my schizophrenia and I hope that one day I might be well enough to be a Befriender myself.’ Community House is a social enterprise owned and operated by Selby District Association of Voluntary Service (AVS), a local support and development organisation, Registered Charity and a Company Limited by Guarantee. It aims to provide information, support and advice on all aspects of setting up and running a successful community group, charity or social enterprise.

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green wants business owners to realise it’s OK to take a step back sometimes

Are you working smarter? When you run a business it can be so easy to try and do everything by yourself. Often, business owners find it difficult to accept the help of others because they feel they can do it better or quicker on their own. The business owner who “needs” to be in control of everything is most certainly one of the biggest obstacles to business growth that we see. By doing this, you will be working longer hours and tackling the income absorbing rather than income generating activities. The key is to work smarter not harder. It is not about the number of hours you

work but how productive those hours are at generating income. To ensure you are profitable, try to adopt a system where you can leverage your time by using the services of others, whether that is employees or outsourced personnel. Yes, you will still need to manage them, however, this is you now working ‘on’ the business as opposed to ‘in’ the business. Empowering people to work for you builds your business by allowing them to taking care of the things they are good at. Make sure you employ or contract the very best people you can and provide them with the tools they need to deliver you a first-class service.

Issue 27 - October / November 2016 Include them in the understanding of your vision and values of the business, engaging with your company culture, understanding your systems and processes, as well as the full knowledge of your service and/or products. Then they will have the correct tools and will be in a position to help you deliver excellence to your customers. Consistency is vital - when a customer receives high quality products and service in a prompt and respectful manner, not only will they be loyal to you, they will tell their family and friends. What better way to grow your business than your customers becoming your ambassadors. Involve them in your business, ask for their feedback so you can continue to develop and exceed their expectations. As you see profits increase you can then re-invest them in your team and your business which in turn increases your capacity to deliver more to your customers. No one is an expert at everything, engage with the right people who can help you achieve your goals. Are YOU working smarter? Celebrating a decade of forever homes with the Dogs Trust Dogs Trust Leeds is celebrating 10 years of finding homes for dogs who have been abandoned or found themselves having to leave behind everything they’ve ever known The Rehoming Centre opened on York Road on the outskirts of Tadcaster on September 27, 2006, and has since gone on to find almost 12,000 dogs their ideal homes.

Dogs Trust’s presence in the area began in the early 1980s. Its site at Adel was privately owned and in 1987 the owner gave permission to build 32 kennels and for Dogs Trust to run the centre.

Amanda Sands, Rehoming Centre Manager, told Locate: ‘The support we have had has been incredible.

Sadly, the increasing numbers of stray and abandoned dogs had been climbing in the region so the charity decided it needed new facilities and more space. Set in 34 acres on the site of a former farm, the York Road Centre, made possible through the generosity of supporters as the charity receives no government funding, opened with 58 kennels each with glass fronts, dramatically reducing noise and stress, underfloor heating and indoor accommodation as well as an outdoor run area.

‘Dogs so often find themselves homeless through no fault of their own, perhaps a relationship break up or sadly the death of an owner. ‘Whatever the reason, they all deserve a second chance and even now after all this time and the thousands we have seen leave the centre with their new owners, tails wagging, it still tugs at the heart strings.’

When the dogs aren’t relaxing in their kennels, they are out and about on the site which has securely enclosed paddocks and agility equipment where they can burn off some of their energy and play and take part in training with their canine carers. Amanda told us: ‘It’s always wonderful to find that special someone for any dog but when they have had a really tough time, it is even more special. ‘Without the support of the dog-loving public, our volunteers and everyone who supports our events, none of it would be possible so we’d like to say a huge thank you and if you’ve not managed to visit us yet, we can’t wait to see you.’

Can you give these homeless hounds their furry-tail ending? Lucy

Eight-year-old Crossbreed Lucy is a very sweet girl who has not had the best life so far. However, since arriving at Dogs Trust, she has grown so much in confidence and is a loving, loyal girl once she gets to know you. She is dreaming of a quiet home with older children and would prefer to be the only pet. She would like a home with an enclosed garden as she loves to run around and play with her toys. Lucy is happy to be left for short periods once settled and is good in the car. She may need to sleep in the bedroom initially until she feels safe and secure, but once she knows she’s your much-loved companion, she will make a great addition to the family.

Jet

Handsome Jet arrived at the York Road Rehoming Centre in March 2014, having already spent four months in kennels after being found as a stray. Sadly, he keeps getting overlooked and the team can’t understand why. Jet loves people! The team say he is full of beans, is great at doing tricks, especially if there’s a sausage treat as a reward, and as he’s a clever boy he’s always eager to learn new things. This five-year-old Lurcher would prefer to be the only dog in the home so that he can have all the attention to himself. He can get a little excited when he sees dogs out and about so will need to be walked in quieter areas. Jet would be more suited to a household without children.

Lucy Jet

Poppy

Poppy has been passed around during her short life. At almost one, she is a lively girl and as she’s so young she does require a little extra training. Poppy has still got a lot of growing to do and needs help understanding that the world is a great place, full of fun. At the moment she is a little worried by dogs but is making good progress and can play nicely with some dogs when out and about. She would be better as the only dog in the home for now. Poppy needs a home without children and her new owners would need to continue with her training so she can become the best she can be.

Poppy

If you think you could offer any of these dogs their perfect home, please call the centre on 0300 303 0292 or visit them at Woodlands Farm, York Road, Leeds, LS15 4NL. You can also find out more at www.dogstrust.org.uk 31

Can you help this team?

Tadcaster Albion Juniors FC is a club with a strong focus on family and community, but after its pitches were ruined in the floods last year, it was forced to reconsider its financial future The floods that devastated Tadcaster in December 2015 were highly documented, but when the water had gone and the media turned their cameras away, many people in the town were left to struggle through the devastation on their own. Now, almost a year later, some organisations are still picking up the pieces– Tadcaster Albion Juniors FC is one of them. The voluntary charter standard club, which is separate to the senior Tadcaster Albions, is run entirely by volunteers, with team managers generally being parents of children who play football there. The club trains groups ranging from kinders, who are five-years-old, and U7s teams right up to U19s. The teams train and play matches weekly with over 200 local children involved. James Thompson, manager of the U9s, told Locate: ‘Due to the floods we have lost around £10,000. Because our pitches are on a floodplain, our fences and gates washed

34

away, the pitches were severely damaged after being submerged under water for weeks and we had to pay contractors to make sure our grounds were safe. ‘In the past we’ve scraped together enough money through grants and donations to get by, but we need to reach out more and would be able to if we had someone focusing their efforts solely on applying for them.’ James is looking for someone with a keen interest in the club to fill the role of ‘Grants Officer’ and volunteer a suggested two hours per week to sit down and apply for grants and funding on behalf of the team. He told us: ‘At the moment, we have 100% of £0.00 so we are open-minded that for the right person we could make the role incentivised.’ To find out more, make a donation or volunteer for the role of Grants Officer you can contact James by emailing jpt16@live.co.uk.
