Young cancer survivor joins inspirational sailing trip with nationwide Trust An 11-year-old cancer survivor from Goole is re-building his confidence thanks to The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust Going through any form of cancer treatment can be an extremely difficult and upsetting experience, but when you are aged just 10 it can be a whole different ball game. Young people can be left feeling like they have missed out on a huge chunk of their childhood, but The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust was set up to change that. Launched in 2003, the inspirational Trust gives young cancer survivors between the ages of eight and 24 the chance to go on sailing trips in order to regain their confidence. Kamil Kasprowski, 11, from Goole, finished treatment for medulloblastoma in November 2015. He was recently taken on a four-day sailing adventure alongside other young people in recovery from cancer by the Trust. Kamil, who had no previous sailing experience, told Our Goole: ‘The trip was recommended by the hospital. It’s been fun and it was good to make new friends. ‘At home some people look at you, like your hair or something because you look different – but here no one looks at you. I definitely want to come again next year.’ Sailing onboard a 42-foot cruising yacht, the trip provided a chance for Kamil and the other young people on board to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment, encouraging them to work as a team and get involved in everything from helming the boat to cooking.

Often, the young people that sail with the Trust have spent long periods of time in a hospital environment and can be suffering from low self-esteem. The trips provide the opportunity to socialise and build confidence while experiencing teamwork and fun in an intimate environment.

Kamil’s yacht departed from its Scottish base in Largs Yacht Haven and the young people then navigated the waters of the Firth of Clyde and enjoyed various stopovers including Port Bannatyne on the picturesque Isle of Bute, before putting their new skills to the test cruising back into Largs.

Dame Ellen, who tries to spend a day on as many trips as possible, told Our Goole: ‘The mental and social fall-out from cancer can be just as devastating as the physical illness. Everything we do is about building confidence, self-esteem and having fun together.’ Find out more about the trust by visiting www.ellenmacarthurcancertrust.org 5

FROM A POLICE Having fun while staying safe

This month Sgt Ryan Reed discusses the troubles both Halloween and Bonfire Night can bring and how they can be prevented.

‘Some people might get frightened more easily than others’

6

Issue 009 - October 2016

E PERSPECTIVE: ‘As summer comes to an end and we prepare for the dark, cold nights of winter, our focus turns to projects surrounding Halloween, Bonfire Night and the events that come with them. Although these events are celebrations, they can be some of our busiest nights of the year as they often come with an increase in anti-social behaviour and criminal activity. The Goole Communities team will be doing several things to raise awareness of this and keep you safe by ensuring that crime and anti-social behaviour remains low. School visits will take place prior to Halloween to give talks to children around safety in the dark and the correct principles that should be adopted when trick or treating. Halloween can be full of fun and laughs, but it’s important to remember that some people might get worried or frightened more easily than others. The talks will discuss avoiding targeting properties containing elderly or vulnerable residents and only trick or treating when supervised. Shops will also be visited to highlight the importance of not selling eggs and flour to youths, children or anybody they believe may be buying it to use in an anti-social manner. PCSOs will be carrying out lots of high visibility patrol on and around Halloween to target any issues and deal with them positively. Mention will also be given to safety on Bonfire Night and the laws regarding misuse of fireworks. PCSOs will again be carrying out high visibility patrol on and around Bonfire Night and will be attending several of the large scale bonfire events in the local area. Both Halloween and Bonfire Night are great fun and we wish you an enjoyable and safe time celebrating both of them.’

Issue 009 - October 2016

England’s first ever coast to coast canoe trail will link Goole to Merseyside Young people in Goole are set to have a splashing time as an innovative project running from one side of the country to the other is set to finish in Goole and provide an established, year-round hub of water-based activities. Over the next five years the Canal & River Trust is aiming to create England’s first-ever coastto-coast canoe trail, running over 160 miles from Liverpool all the way to Goole, making it the longest trail in the UK. It will connect some of the North of England’s most deprived communities and help to transform not only riversides and habitats, but also the lives of more than 100,000 young people along the way. The five-year plan to create the challenging canoe trail will start in Liverpool on the west coast, follow 127 miles of Britain’s longest canal, the Leeds & Liverpool, link into the Aire and Calder Navigation in West Yorkshire and finally reach the east coast at Goole in around 2020. The trail will not be for the faint-hearted and will involve carrying canoes around 91 locks, but encouraging young people to become more active and get involved in a new sport is a key part of the youth engagement programme. The project is being developed by the charity Canal & River Trust, thanks to a generous £1.3 million donation from The Desmond Foundation. The aim of the scheme is to create healthier communities, encouraging young people to connect with their canal and develop the life skills to take forward for training and employment while leaving a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy. Along with designing the trail young people will organise and run a year-round programme of activity for their community including canoe taster sessions.

Physical improvements to the route including planting new community gardens and habitats along the trail will also take place. The project has the support of British Canoeing and Canoe England. There will be 10 hubs across the trail, based in the heart of local communities and connected with the canal. Three or four Canoe Action Squads will be set up every year, each one with 100 youth volunteers, who will then reach out to a further 500 young people and their families through community engagement activity. The project was launched early last year and 10 flagship locations for squads will be based at: • Liverpool and Burscough – where the trail was first developed - these hubs are now up and running • Wigan and Blackburn - these hubs are in the pipeline and are due to open this summer • Burnley and Skipton will be next on the list, to be followed by • Leeds and Castleford • with Knottingley and Goole – the final two locations to be developed, with the project coming to fruition in Goole The Canal & River Trust has already identified 75 partners and community groups that want to support the project including schools, universities, disability groups and football teams along the route. For further information on how to become involved, visit: www.canalrivertrust.org.uk 15

RSPCA gives gold award to council’s licensing team East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s licensing team has become one of just five local authorities in the country to be given a top award from the RSPCA for work they do to protect animal welfare. The team was given the gold award in the animal establishments licensing footprint category of the awards, for the high standards of licensing policies and robust enforcement in relation to the regulation of zoos, pet shops, riding schools, kennels, dog breeders and dangerous wild animals in the East Riding. Along with the licensing team, there was an award for the council’s dog wardens as they were presented with the RSPCA gold community animal welfare footprint award for the sixth consecutive year. Their award recognises the work the wardens do in

relation to the handling and care of stray dogs as well as the work they do to promote and support neutering and micro-chipping. Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: ‘I am delighted these two teams have been recognised for their high standards of animal welfare with these well-deserved national awards. ‘I am aware of all the hard work and dedication of our officers in promoting animal welfare and providing a high-quality service, ensuring the welfare of the animals takes priority but that public safety is not compromised. ‘Residents can assist our services in their work by ensuring their pets are kept safe, by always using licensed animal welfare establishments, that dogs are tagged and micro-chipped and by cleaning up after their dogs to reduce fouling.’

Goole’s Got (loads of)

Talent!

Our Goole is over the moon to bring you an exclusive insight into this year’s Goole’s Got Talent contestants

Music, dancing and comedy are in the air - it must be time for the annual Goole’s Got Talent competition!

With the auditions done and dusted and 10 finalists selected and ready to compete, we thought it was time you found out a little bit more about the competition and the talent our hometown has been hiding. Goole’s Got Talent is one of the Mayor’s annual fundraising events. It was first established back in 2011 and has been running every year since. And if celebrating our homegrown talent isn’t exciting enough, you will be thrilled to know that ticket sales are going towards the Mayor’s Charity, which is supporting Castaway Goole Music Theatre this year. 22

Anne Bentley, the Mayor’s Secretary said: ‘We don’t envy the judges this year as we have an extremely high standard of talent with lots of variety. It is shaping up to be an excellent night of entertainment’. The winner of the competition will receive a choice of several nominated prizes, including gift vouchers, weekends away, recording studio time and theatre tickets. As well as performances from the 10 contestants, the night will also see a special guest appearance from the Mayor of Goole, Terence Smith, 19, who will be performing musical comedy. The contest will be held on Saturday, October 8 at 7.30pm. At the time of going to print, the competition has not taken place and the result is unknown.

Goole Paddlers Project receives exciting Sport England funding East Riding of Yorkshire Council has received an award of £8,610 from Sport England to deliver a project offering indoor and outdoor kayaking opportunities for young people in Goole – all free of charge.

The purpose of the Goole Paddlers project is to promote kayaking as a positive activity for young people and encourage recreational use of the local waterways. The council is also aspiring to help establish a canoe club, which would be a first for the town and surrounding area.

The Goole Paddlers Project includes outdoor sessions run from the Yorkshire Waterways Museum, using the Aire and Calder Navigation. Sessions are led by qualified coaches, offering youngsters a safe, fun and interactive experience of being on the water.

Director of Property at Sport England, Charles Johnston said: ‘We are delighted to offer National Lottery funding to help more young people living in Goole try kayaking. These free sessions offer a taste of the thrills and spills that kayaking has to offer, and will no doubt encourage more young people in the area to take up the sport in the longer term.’

The council will be offering further sessions, aimed at young people aged 13 and over, which are currently running. Each session will last for two hours, from 4-6pm. The purpose of the Goole Paddlers project is to promote kayaking as a positive activity for young people and encourage recreational use of the local waterways. The council is also aspiring to help establish a canoe club, which would be a first for the town and surrounding area.

The project is being led by the East and North Yorkshire Waterways Partnership with support from the council’s sport, play and arts service, Goole Renaissance Partnership, Yorkshire Waterways Museum, British Canoeing and Canal & River Trust. For more information about the Goole Paddlers project, contact 01482 391678.

In this month’s Business Column, Business Support Specialist Heidi Green gives us the lowdown on getting ahead by getting the deal - the right way

Have you ever thought that you could have done a better deal? A great negotiator is someone that always seems to get the best results from a given set of goals. It certainly isn’t about being irritating or aggressive but, yes, you do occasionally have to be a bit thick skinned. Being focused on what you want to achieve and being prepared to compromise are two key elements that will help you achieve your desired outcome. But above all of this, you need determination to get not just a deal, but

the best deal possible. But be aware being determined does not mean being aggressive, angry, thumping the table or using threats. Believe me - we’ve seen them all. First, do your research so you have as much knowledge about the client and the offer so that you can ensure a great match to the client needs. After all, knowledge is power. It is just like preparing for an exam, those who have done their revision correctly will be more confident that those who haven’t. Pick up on verbal and non-verbal signs. Listen more, talk less and observe. Do

THE MUSEUM, THE PROJECT AND THE

Waterways If you want to explore something exciting without leaving your home town, then The Yorkshire Waterways Museum, nestled on Goole’s Dutch River Side, is a place with a history that you definitely won’t want to ignore We live in a world where it is so easy to explore new and faraway places, and sometimes we forget to pay attention to the fascinating attractions that exist right in front of us. Is The Yorkshire Waterways Museum one of them?

shipwrights tools. Paul told us: ‘Those involved with the project felt a duty of care towards the items we’d being given and people believed that members of the public should be able to see them, so the centre became a registered museum in 1995.’

The sun was shining down on the glistening waters of the canal when Our Goole visited the museum. Paul Cooper, the Director of the Sobriety Project, transported us back in time to 1973, when local businessman John McGrory decided to purchase an ex commercial cargo barge and name it Sobriety.

At this time, the voluntary sector in Britain was thriving and there was a vast amount of money available to organisations like The Sobriety Project.

With the help of the head of Goole grammar school, Mr Teed, and youth services, Sobriety was painted and school staff along with local boatmen began taking children on trips up and down the canals.

But as the 2000s progressed, less grant money was available to third sector organisations and the project began to contract.

Paul told Our Goole: ‘To raise funds to make further improvements, the project needed to be a registered charity. It was at this point that the Sobriety Project was born.’ The charity soon expanded and began employing staff and purchasing more boats. In 1989, the project built The Sobriety Centre to use as a base for the boats, staff and admin work. When the 90s came around, the Sobriety Project began applying for funding to run outreach projects from the centre, particularly to help the long-term unemployed or those with mental health problems. Those working for the project soon realised that, over time, they had acquired numerous items including vintage photographs of the waterways and old

In 2001, the building was extended, doubling in size and allowing the museum element of the project to become more substantial.

Clare, the museum’s Business Development Manager told Our Goole: ‘Funding and grants became scarce in the mid 2000s, and the truth is the situation is very much the same today. It’s becoming increasingly hard to fund the core of the charity.’ Despite their financial worries, Paul and Clare have ensured the project and museum is still very much alive. The site hosts dozens of projects that help hundreds of vulnerable people including training adults with learning difficulties for supported employment opportunities, supporting children that have been excluded from school or are at risk of offending and supporting isolated elderly people, those with mental health issues and the long-term unemployed. Clare told us: “We don’t turn anyone away, that’s the beauty of the project. If we can help you then we will.” Donate to the Sobriety Project by visiting the museum and leaving a contribution in the donation box or by sending a cheque made payable to ‘The Sobriety Project’ to The Yorkshire Waterways Museum, Dutch River Side, Goole, East Yorkshire, DN14 5TB.

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc reports Thisthe month property expertasDavid Leake of Housesetc on drop-off of enquiries predicted earlier in the year

considers what Brexit may have in store for first-time buyers

Could Brexit help first-time buyers? When house prices fall, the one group that doesn’t complain are first-time buyers. These people have spent months, if not years, watching prices rise. Now, with the possibility of a post-Brexit slowdown in the housing market, they can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. How far house prices will fall (if at all) is debatable. The market was already showing signs of slowing down, partly because of the pre-Brexit uncertainty, and partly because of other factors such as the rise in stamp duty in

April. Now prices may to go into reverse. Interest rates have fallen, which will reduce mortgage payments and give first-time buyers another reason to smile. The problem of under-supply in the housing market has been well documented and successive governments have failed to meet their targets for building new homes. But nobody is predicting a sudden surge in housebuilding. And if builders are cautious about how many new houses to build, banks and other mortgage lenders

Issue 009 - October 2016 will also be cautious, lenders will be asking themselves if they should tighten their eligibility or insist on larger deposits. Given the current circumstances, first-time buyers would be well advised to keep in mind the following points: 1. Keep shopping around for affordable properties. 2. Shop around for the best mortgage deals. Some lenders will be bullish in the present climate, some more cautious. 3. Make sure you have a mortgage agreement in principle in place. This will show agents and vendors that you are serious ‘ready-to-go’ buyers when you want to make an offer on a property.

Business of the

month

Frying Nemo is a family-run fish and chip shop in Carlton - owned and managed by Keely Richardson

Our Goole spoke to Keely to find out about opening the shop, her moment in the spotlight with Gordon Ramsay and how she deals with the pressure of providing the people of Carlton with top-notch fish and chips on a daily basis. Keely, when was Frying Nemo founded? Me and my dad, Ken Austwick, decided to take the plunge and start up the business back in November 2005.

36

he makes sure he comes to Frying Nemo for his freebie!

Can you tell us a little bit about what you do for those who don’t know? We are a family run fish and chip shop in Carlton, serving chips sourced from a local farmer and haddock that is delivered fresh three times a week straight from Hull docks.

What makes you different from other similar businesses? I think it’s the relationship we have built with our suppliers - we always buy the best fish we can source. Consistency is key too - my theory has always been ‘if it’s not broke don’t try and fix it’. We are a very friendly shop and have a great rapport with our customers, and although I don’t live in the village I really feel part of the local community.

Why did you decide to open it? My dad already had a smaller shop in Kellington but I decided I wanted to join him in business so we came to Carlton together. I bought the business from him three years ago when he retired, he still calls in every week and sometimes helps me out. He says he can’t bear to pay for fish and chips anywhere else so

Do you have any interesting facts about Frying Nemo? I was invited by the BBC to appear on The One Show back in January this year alongside Gordon Ramsay. Frying Nemo appeared alongside two other quirkily named fish and chip shops to play a game where Gordon and his wife Tana had to guess the name of our businesses. It

was really exciting and felt fantastic to do something so different to what I get up to on a daily basis running the shop. From a business perspective, how do you find the local area? Carlton still has community spirit and organises lots of local events which I always try and support. I sometimes wonder if fish and chips will eventually go out of favour with the younger generations, however, I don’t see this happening right now. I think if it’s cooked correctly and the portion size is right, it’s the healthiest takeaway you can get and probably the best value for money too. What does the future hold for Frying Nemo? We hope to continue serving the best fish and chips we possibly can. Who knows, in the future there might even be a second shop – Frying Dory perhaps!

Self-defence success Could it soon be black belts all round for dedicated martial arts students in Goole? Adults and children from Goole are well on their way to earning a black belt thanks to Defence Lab Martial Arts school. Local students from the school, both old and young, recently took part in a Grading Day event, where they showcased all the skills they have developed over the past few months. Paul Strauther, owner of the school, told Our Goole: ‘Everyone who took part passed. This is a fantastic achievement by everybody and a huge step in the right direction on their journey to becoming Black Belt Leaders. All of our classes offer a great physical workout but they are also really great fun.’

Defence Lab teaches people life skills such as discipline, goal setting, respect and concentration as well as general fitness and incredible martial arts and self defence skills. The classes, held every Monday at Elite Fitness on Burlington Crescent, challenge and teach people to develop both their physical and mental skills without generating any violence. Defence Lab is a global network of self defence and fitness training facilities. It combines studies of both physical and mental aspects of reality-based combat and self-defence strategies.
