Relaunch Issue - February 2016
Our Goole is back with a magazine and website dedicated to Goole and surrounding areas – providing a place where you can find news, views, events and much more @ourgoole
ourgoole
INTRODUCTION Hello and welcome to the newly re-launched Our Goole magazine, your local, monthly guide to everything Goole.
Each issue will have a mix of positive stories, features, events, community and business news, running alongside informative monthly articles.
We’re thrilled to be back in print and part of such a strong, vibrant community.
Our aim is to provide not only a great read, but also a perfect platform for local businesses, charities, community groups and initiatives to reach a wide and welcoming audience.
Goole can sometimes take a bit of a knocking, but we aim to be all about promoting the positive, and highlighting the good. In today’s fast-paced world there is bad news at every turn, so much so that sometimes we can forget that community spirit, pride, kindness and generosity still exist. Well, indeed they do and Goole and its residents has them all, in spades.
Everything published in the magazine will also be featured online on the Our Goole website, along with breaking news, court reports and any last minute events that come to light in-between publications. If you have a story or you’d like to get in touch, contact us on 01405 819141, or email: news@ourgoole.co.uk

Bright future ahead for brave Charlie
Speaking to Our Goole, delighted mum Gayle said: ‘Everything is looking so good scan wise. Charlie is so well in himself and his hair is now growing back fast!’
A Goole family are hoping they can finally put their poorly little boy’s cancer battle behind them, as his latest round of test results show he’s winning his fight. Last year four-year-old Charlie Patton was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that mostly affects young children, with less than 100 being diagnosed in the UK each year. Charlie and his devastated family were told they faced a gruelling 18-months of intense treatment at Sheffield’s Children’s hospital, but thanks to the new test results their nightmare could be coming to an end. Mum Gayle excitedly confirmed the good news to the hundreds of followers on Charlie’s social media page, ‘Charlie’s Journey’.
The latest round of bone marrow and ultrasound results came back so positive, that consultants are optimistic that by April Charlie’s treatment will be complete. Charlie faces his final antibody treatment on Good Friday, and from there can have his ‘lines’ removed within a matter of weeks. This not only means an end to the punishing therapy, but a return to normality that most four-year-olds take for granted. The prospect of going swimming and playing along with his friends without ‘missing out’, are the things parents Gayle and Rob are most anticipating. Charlie, however, is most looking forward to being able to simply go down a slide on this tummy! Despite missing out on a large chunk of the school year at Marshlands Primary during the course of his treatment, Charlie has not let this hold him back. So much so he was recently awarded ‘Star of the Week’, which just goes to show he hasn’t let his ill health beat him. Speaking to Our Goole, a delighted
Brave: Charlie has battled through intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment
Gayle said: ‘Everything is looking so good scan wise. Charlie is so well in himself and his hair is now growing back fast! ‘His consultant has given us the hope that he will be able to have his lines removed in April, and all his treatment will be over and we can put this last year to bed. ‘This journey is not over for us as a family and will stay with us forever, but hopefully will be a distant memory to Charlie. We are so proud of him and how he has battled on like a true soldier! ‘Once the lines are removed we will be able to have a well deserved family holiday, and that is all down to our many lovely friends and family. So thank you to all of you, for following Charlie’s story and for all of your support.’ 5

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE:
The knock-on effects of anti-social behaviour The recent issuing of a criminal behaviour order, to a homeless man sleeping rough in Goole has brought the issue firmly into focus. Inspector Jo York of Goole Neighbourhood Policing Team explains the impact of anti-social behaviour on the community.
There is a misconception that most anti-social behaviour is committed by young people, when in fact the majority takes place amongst adults
6
Relaunch Issue - February 2016
“Anti-Social behaviour is often the first step to criminality. Whilst reported levels are low in Goole and the surrounding area, what does take place has an impact on the lives of individuals and communities. This can take place in a number of forms including minor assaults, threats of violence against people and property, criminal damage, intimidation and harassment, rowdy behaviour and hate incidents. “Humberside Police’s stance on anti-social behaviour is that it is unacceptable, and early intervention is key. Police and partner agencies have a system where individuals at risk of offending are identified at an early stage. This is the Operation Fairway process that East Riding Council operates with the police. From the first dealings with police, an ‘offender’ is sent out a letter from the council, warning them that if their behaviour continues, they will be monitored by other agencies and further action may be taken. Further ‘offending’ is likely to lead to an acceptable behaviour contract and places restrictions on that person. Breaches of this would indicate unwillingness to try and amend the behaviour, and may lead to further action in the form of prosecution, eviction proceedings, being banned from public transport or council provisions. “Both perpetrators and victims are regularly reviewed, by police, council officers and housing officers, to ensure appropriate action is being taken. In very exceptional cases, when all other interventions and support have not worked, this may lead to a criminal behaviour order being issued. “A recent example of this is a homeless man who was sleeping rough in the Goole area. Following numerous offers of support,
assessments and multi-agency intervention to help him, he refused all help and continued to commit crime and anti-social behaviour, much of which was completely unacceptable and extremely distressing to the general public and individual victims. His behaviour included begging, being under the influence of drink, using foul and abusive language, contaminating food and leaving blood and faeces in public places. These incidents were taking place alongside criminal offences, which were being dealt with by normal prosecution. “I have to stress that these were exceptional circumstances where all other interventions and help had failed, but calls to the police and council continued and the local community were extremely distressed and very angry. The order, granted in November 2015 lasts for a year and places a number of prohibitions on the male including; • Acting in an anti-social manner that causes harassment alarm or distress • Committing any intimidating or threatening behaviour • Approach persons for money • Lodging in the street • Drinking alcohol in public or being in possession of open alcohol containers.
Tackling night-time drinking Another example of antisocial behaviour is the conduct associated with drinking during the night-time economy (drinking in town on the busy nights, Friday and Saturday). Insp York explains: ‘Whilst a certain amount of low level rowdiness is to be expected and can be tolerated, where such behaviour begins to get out of hand or looks like it may lead to offences being committed, police can exercise their powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. This provides officers with a direction to disperse a person from a specified area (outlined on a map provided to them) and they are unable to return within 48 hours. If they do return, they are arrested. ‘This is not a big issue in Goole and officers only disperse very few persons each weekend, and where they do, it rarely results in arrest. However, where we do have occasion to disperse an individual due to their behaviour associated with drinking, we always follow this up by visiting them within a few days and explaining the consequences of their behaviour. Whilst these visits are very few for the Goole area, they have been well received by the perpetrators, who were unaware of the consequences of their behaviour at the time.’

Big changes in the pipeline for trusted car dealership There are significant re-development works in progress at Glews Garage on Rawcliffe Road, Goole, as phase one of major refurbishment work gets underway. Starting in early February the first phase of the site re-development will see the car dealership operating from one building. The existing Peugeot dealership will be demolished and all sales and servicing will be housed under one roof, in the existing service/MOT and used car sales building.
Behind the scenes work began back in January, with the car sales, MOT testing, valet bay and accounts teams moving across to their new home, allowing them to get settled in and be able to provide and maintain their usual level of superb customer service. There will be minor changes to the road layout around the dealership, but evident signage will ensure

main house, along with the deluxe heated, indoor pool and large sauna, shower and changing area. After bringing her children’s friends over for a welcoming swim, Penny became even more inspired. Being separate from the main house, she realised the pool would be ideal for ‘private renting’, and a unique new business was born.

FUN RUN
An activity and support group for families with children with additional needs is facing an uncertain future, unless they can attract additional members to boost their dwindling numbers.

Making use of the fantastic ‘soft-play’ facilities at Goole’s Fun Run, the group meet on the third Tuesday of each month, 4-6.30pm.

New members needed to save ‘fantastic’ support group
Whether already ‘in the system’, or awaiting a diagnosis, you will find a warm welcome and a wealth of knowledge awaiting you.
It provides a perfect opportunity to meet other families in a similar situation, make new friends and have fun. Unfortunately, as they are self-funded, times are tough. As children grow up and families move on to the next stage of the support network, it is a struggle to get new members onboard. Parent Sharon Kitteridge now organises Run Ahead, and like many of the members has been attending the meetings regularly for years. Passionate about the group and keen to keep the support there, Sharon and the Run Ahead committee are concerned that unless new members come forward, the group may face closure. Sharon told Our Goole: ‘Without funding it is difficult to raise awareness of this fantastic group, so more families can take advantage of the wonderful support it provides.’
Relaunch Issue - February 2016
Run Ahead was formed six years ago by Fun Run co-founder Elizabeth (Beth) Taylor, who became a joint trustee of the group; Rosie, a representative from FISH (Families Information Service Hub); together with a group of parents with children with additional needs. The idea was for a ‘one-stop-shop’ for these families, providing a venue, facilities, support, advice and even a ‘signpost’ type hub to direct families in the right direction for additional help, services and support. Speaking about the advantages of Run Ahead, parent and committee member Michelle Parker said: ‘I have been coming to Run Ahead for four years with my daughter, after finding out about it through FISH. What we get out of this group is just invaluable.
‘I really don’t know what I would have done without this place. One night a month we can come out, I know that if my daughter has a meltdown, no-one bats an eyelid. We’re accepted, there’s no judgement here and there is just so much help from the other parents. ‘If we’re having a bad day, they understand. There is always someone who knows something, always someone who can help.’ The group last received official funding two years ago, and group numbers need to increase significantly to sustain the sessions. As organiser Sharon reiterated, ‘The need is most definitely there. The families are indeed there, it’s just a case of making them aware WE’RE here. ‘Unfortunately, it really is a case of ‘use it, or lose it’.

a city centre worthy venue Situated in the heart of Carlton, The Odddfellows is an outstanding, newly refurbished pub with a rich history dating back to 1750. The fabulous revamp has been such a success, the rave reviews are almost as mouth-watering as the food. The historic North Yorkshire pub with its distinctive name has faced the threat of demolition several times, as planners and property developers pursued the site for housing. Falling into poor repair and starting to depreciate, the historic building has thankfully been given a stunning new lease of life by owner and landlord, Gav Smith. Extensive renovations have transformed the bar and restaurant into a modern, sophisticated, welcoming venue that is thriving and drawing in both drinkers and diners in their droves. Offering fine food, friendly staff and a well stocked bar and cafĂŠ, once you have sampled the extensive menu you will most surely be planning your return visit.

This month business and marketing expert Alan Hemingway looks at new start-ups, and where to turn for the best business advice
New year, new you, new business Did you know that the beginning of the year is the most popular time of year to start a new venture or business, I guess it’s because when we have our festive break and the new year comes around everyone starts reflecting on the year they’ve just had and what their plans are for the next year.
Starting a business can be both exciting and frightening at the same time, for lots of people it’s about moving into new areas where they have no experience whatsoever, for others it’s about no longer working for the boss anymore and taking control themselves.
Having your own business brings with it freedoms that you can not get anywhere else, you’re now free to spend your time however you want (you’re the boss after all), you’re free to pay yourself as much as your business can afford (don’t forget the taxes though), you also get to choose who you work with (no more awkward customers, if you don’t want them). However with these freedoms comes responsibility. You now have the responsibility for your own income, no more pay cheques at the end of the month - it’s up to you to generate the business and income to pay yourself. When things go wrong (and they will, because something always goes wrong) it’s now up to you to fix it. This is when owning and running a business can become a burden rather than a pleasure.

Relaunch Issue - February 2016 The more successful business owners recognise that they are not good at everything and not everything will go smoothly, so look to get help as soon as they can. Where to get the right sort of help is the question that most struggle to answer. Here are a few recommendations of where to turn for business help and advice: 1. Look for groups in your area that specialise in helping businesses like yours. There will be “mastermind groups” made up of people in your industry all looking to help each other. 2. Many networking groups across the region have education slots specifically aimed at helping business owners generate more business. Google business networking groups to find them in your area.
Firm flourishes thanks to loan Andy Etherington and Carl Smith are experts in vehicle restoration and repair – between them they have over 50 years’ experience. Together they opened their own Repair and Restore Bodyshop in Goole in October 2014, thanks to business loan support from Stacey Howard of the Goole Development Trust (GDT).
3. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is very active in this region and offers excellent business support, education and networking opportunities. Of course you can always contact your local accountant at Hemingway Bailey for additional advice and support on 01482 679333.
Since opening, the shop has built a huge customer base, ranging from accident repair work to enthusiasts modifying their car. Over the last year the business has doubled and is now a member of the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association. Now employing five members of staff, their unique skills are a big part of the business and drive much of the long-term development. As the business grows, Andy and Carl are considering expanding their space. They hope to secure deals with haulage firms where they’ll cater for both large and small commercial vehicles. Such is the level of their success, Repair and Restore have been nominated as a finalist in the New Business category of the Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards 2016, to be held on February 19. With the business now in full swing, Andy and Carl have now expanded into the adjoining side unit and are going from strength to strength. “Stacey at GDT has given us so much advice and has always been there to listen. She’s helped us with ideas on future expansion and should we need it, we’ll be using GDT again,” said Andy. 21

Business of the
month
Director Saul Todd of North Computers has built up an enviable reputation and a formidable company since he founded his business back in 2002
Enthusiasm, positive attitude and an absolute dedication to faultless customer service have seen this company steadily flourish. We caught up with Saul to find out a little about the man behind the business… Saul, has your business always been based in the Goole area? Yes, however we do work further afield. I have over 13 years’ experience in the industry (and many more to come), but I’m Yorkshire born and bred and never forget my roots.
which I am extremely proud. My training has enabled me to develop within the industry, moving on to things such as complex server installations, maintenance and web design. I am constantly evolving to ensure that I am up to date with the times, which is key in this industry.
Is this what you always wanted to do? I’ve always wanted to DJ and music produce and I attended Manchester Music School early on. Like most dream careers, it’s extremely hard to make them a reality. I am lucky enough to have done the things I have and still actively practice them as a pastime. I love to learn and thrive on accomplishing targets and goals. I most definitely have job satisfaction, which realistically is what we all crave in life!
How do you find the local area from a business perspective? Within the current economic climate all businesses, whether large or small, find it a challenge. Throughout the years my client database has become strong and more importantly, the company has become a name people trust and return to.
Tell us about your industry training: I am a Microsoft certified professional and specialist, of 22
What other passions drive you forward in life: I studied music over in Manchester, shortly after I trained and became a qualified personal trainer and nutritionist. Training is a big part of my life to this day - you need to train the body as well as the mind.
I also am a qualified electrician, kitchen and bathroom fitter, and I love to snowboard, play football, cook and bake. A real ‘Jack-of-all trades’! Lastly, what are the main benefits you find to advertising in our magazines? The main source of my business has come from advertising in local magazines on a regular basis. We want our customers to know we are here and we are here to stay and support them. ‘The great thing about the magazine is that the customer can see we are consistent. We are genuine and we will offer a service second to none. The majority of my customers I have had for years, which is such an honour. ‘You guys always supply what you sell which is quite hard to come by! So thank you!’

This month we focus on Goole & District RSPCA Goole and District RSPCA is run by a team of dedicated volunteers and fosterers who, along with fundraising and essential home checks, even find time to foster cats in their own homes. The branch raises most of its own funds through various events throughout the year, including the annual fun Dog Show at West Park. Every penny raised goes towards helping animals in the Goole and District area, and on raising awareness of responsible pet ownership. Just some of the services provided are: welfare assistance; dog, cat and rabbit ‘action days’ [to support penny-pinched pets and their owners]; regular ID chipping clinics; and discounted neutering campaigns. The branch is dedicated to helping all sick, injured and desperate cases. Even feral cats are trapped, chipped, and neutered by the branch, before being returned to the wild - suitable outbuildings are found if they cannot be put back where they are originally found. Orphaned kittens are cared for and fed round-the-clock, by tireless, experienced fosterers.
How the branch lent a hand in 2015 • 136 cats taken into care with voluntary fosterers • 116 cats re-homed • 1 rabbit re-homed 24
• • • •
109 home visits carried out 340 animals chipped 231 animals neutered 327 given welfare assistance

Georgina Petty, press officer and volunteer for Goole RSPCA said: Last year was very busy. Our first ever Charity Ball was a great success, a highlight for many. Our annual Dog Show, celebrating its tenth year last year, was a barking mad success. The vet bills however, have risen dramatically as the calls from both
Narnia One-year-old Narnia is a magical cat, full of fun and mischief but at the same very loving and responsive.
the public and RSPCA inspectorate increased. It was an honour to be the Mayor of Goole’s ‘Charity of the Year’, but with such a title comes responsibility, so 2016 means the branch are aiming to reach even more animals and owners in need.
Narnia
She had kittens in care whilst barely more than a kitten herself, and now they have all been re-homed she is enjoying making up for lost time playing with toys, chasing anything that moves - whether it is a feather teaser-toy or a stray piece of paper. Very knowing and inquisitive, Narnia will enjoy ‘grooming’ your hair, pushing her head against your face, and sitting next to you and purring loudly for a chin rub.
Martha Pretty one-year-old Martha, having successfully reared her kitten (since adopted), is now looking for a permanent home where she can be number one.
Martha
A gentle, friendly and affectionate cat, Martha loves to have her head and back stroked. She will roll over to have her tummy rubbed and will reward you with a ready purr. She will enjoy sitting on or next to you, and plays with a variety of toys - especially a soft blue rubber ball, which she carries around and ‘talks’ to! Martha will make a lovely family pet and be fine with children. To adopt from Goole RSPCA you will need a home visit before viewing, to match the perfect cat with the right forever home. A volunteer home visitor will guide you through a simple questionnaire, the whole process taking no more than half an hour. You will then be contacted within 48hrs and, if successful, you are then invited to view the cats in their foster homes.
Adoption fees are £65 for a kitten, £50 for an adult (over 6 months of age). This fee includes ID chip, vaccinations (including leukemia), neutering and up-to-date flea and worm treatment. All cats/kittens are health checked before entering into foster care. For more information contact: 07599 087527. 25

This month property expert David Leake, of Housesetc casts his experienced eye over the local market, and predicts the year ahead facing both renters and buyers in 2016.
More starter homes to kick-start market This year we will see a continuing struggle for those trying to get onto the property ladder, with prices further beyond the reach of low to middle earners and rent costs eating away at more of their income. It is important that first-time-buyers (FTBs) remain at the top of the Government’s agenda in order to help them get a foot on the housing ladder. However, if the supply, specifically of ‘affordable housing’, doesn’t significantly increase in 2016, FTBs will continue to
26
feel driven out of the market. Supply is a key issue; if we truly want to see FTBs able to buy their first home we absolutely have to address this. Osborne’s announcement that he’ll be building 200,000 new-starter-homes is a good place to start, but it’s not enough to solve the worsening crisis. We are at risk of doing too little too late. We are still waiting to see new homes being built; and whilst we wait, house prices continue to rise.
Relaunch Issue - February 2016
BAD NEWS FOR ROGUE LANDLORDS The good news is that regulation in the industry looks like it will be tightening up in 2016.
RISING COST OF RENTING
Unfortunately for renters, rent prices are likely to go up in 2016. There are various pieces of legislation coming into play in 2016 which will result in increased compliance costs for landlords, and as a result push up rents for tenants. The Government needs to re-think its proposals around reducing Mortgage Interest Relief, scrapping the Wear and Tear Allowance and hiking up Stamp Duty by three per cent on buy-to-let properties. Whilst these remain, the Government’s goal of increasing the percentage of people in home ownership is getting further out of reach. The issue of supply and demand in the rental market will be increasingly pushed to its limit with rising demand outstripping supply.
