Slimming World success defeats ‘weight demons’ Inspirational local, Dayna Brigham, has told Our Goole her greatest motivation has been her son following her astonishing five stone weight loss in just six months Mobile hairdresser and barmaid by day, Dayna has regularly been attending a Slimming World group and has now lost five stone. Next she’s set to reach her target of losing eight stone. Speaking to Our Goole, Dayna revealed she was always Page 6
‘fighting her own weight demons on the inside’ with her weight problems having a large impact on her and her son’s life. “My main motivation was for my son. I am a single parent to a sport loving energetic seven-year-old. I was creeping into a size 24 in clothes and my confidence was at an all-time
low, leaving me with no energy. “I can now go and play sports with him and join in at the trampoline parks, bringing out the big kid inside me as well. We both love it.” In August 2018, the 32-yearold signed up for Terry Malcolmson’s Slimming World group, with the scheme offering

expert advice on diet and lifestyle plans. By February this year, Dayna had seen a drastic five-stone loss and is determined to continue the plan and reach her eight-stone target. “I never really set out to reach five stone in such a short amount of time but by sticking to my plan and staying focused on my eight stone goal it has gone by really quick. I have tried many quick-fix diets in the past, but I got bored and ended up putting all the weight back on.” “Slimming World, as much as it is a weight-loss plan, it also focuses on lifestyle change. It is a plan I will stick to for life, but my diet is not restricted so I can still go out and eat what I want, and drink what I want.” Following her first six months at Slimming World, Dayna has suggested the results have been both positive for herself, but
more so her son. “Seeing his face when I come home to tell him what I have done or show him a new shiny sticker on my book is worth a million bags of crisps or chocolate bars any day of the week.”
Now if people ask I will happily tell them. Of course, it is still not the number I want to see but I have come so far and will happily share if it helps them. The great thing is I know I will be telling them less and less each time I see them until I get to my dream number. She also offered some valuable advice for those who are looking to achieve similar results from programmes such as Slimming World.
“Personally, I am now happy in any social situation and will talk to anybody about anything. The number on the scales, I wouldn’t mention it to anybody in the past, not even my family and closest friends.
“I think the best advice I could give is work out your true reasons to wanting to lose weight. Get a true target in your head, no matter however far away that might seem and focus on that. “If that is the person you want to be and a weight you want to be why not, there is only one person stopping that dream number or dress size becoming yours.”

r Talking’ initiative You may have seen an increase in officers around the town in the past few weeks, particularly in Goole North. This is because officers are undertaking a new initiative in the area known as Humber Talking. This initiative has been widely publicised and initially began as a trial on the Beverley Road area of Hull. It led to a successful reduction in the problems/concerns raised by local residents. As a result we have begun Humber Talking in the East Riding, with Goole North being the chosen area ward to begin. Following our success in the Hull region, we are hoping to replicate this and launch the initiative in Goole – addressing any concerns with local residents. In the next few weeks officers will knock and survey every house located in the Goole North Ward. We will ask occupant/s a series of questions focusing generally on any issues of concern they have about the area. This can range from fly-tipping, gangs of youths causing annoyance, drug dealing, knife crime or if even that nothing is concerning them. We as a police
force are keen to hear any issues or concerns that you may have, and want you to have the peace of mind that we are always on hand to assist you. We will input responses in a central database to build a picture of the issues identified by the community. The findings will be used by the local Goole team to consider what local residents have said and we will then set their short and long term priorities based around those concerns. If the issues being raised are within the remit of partner agencies, such as local authorities, health services etc then we will pass on the information to those organisations. If we are unable to speak to the occupant directly we will leave a “calling card” which outlines how to complete the survey online and sign up to community alerts (text messaging system to inform you of ongoing incidents/crimes in your area) otherwise email us on Goole@humberside. pnn.police.uk or tel 101 asking for Goole Neighbourhood team. We thoroughly look forward to hearing from you, and believe all the information we receive from the community only pushes us forward.

‘Team H2O, made up of brother and sister Aaron and Eloise Evans, were rewarded with the ‘trip of a lifetime’ after their work in the community. After hearing about the problem of hygiene poverty, the pair spent their summer holidays contacting businesses and collecting donations, enabling them to make and deliver hygiene packs to people in need. Speaking to Our Goole, mother of the team Janet, told us they saw a news documentary highlighting the problem, but didn’t realise how it was affecting people locally. “Seeing the impact it had locally made them even more determined to make their project a success. “I was proud of them working together as a brother and sister team. They set a brilliant example for the youth of today, who are getting such bad press at the moment. “The people in the community
seemed to be so inspired by their effort and their age. It is great that they committed their time in such a way throughout the summer holidays.” We also caught up with Aaron and Eloise who spoke to us following their arrival back into the UK. “The trip was amazing, and we loved every minute of it. Before we went on the trip we collected a holdall of stationery, sports and hygiene products through fundraising. We received these products along with donations from friends, family, Kingsway Primary and the Goole Academy.
“We donated these to KYP, a local youth project in Soweto, and were given a tour of the local area. All the people were amazing, it was such a privilege. “We then were taken to Kruger National Park for three days on a safari and camping trip. We received traditional foods, including local meats and insects – which were our choice. “We managed to see an unbelievable amount of wildlife including elephants, giraffes, lions, crocodiles and zebras to name a few.” The duo were also very thankful for their opportunity, suggesting this wouldn’t have been possible without the Lifestyle project and support of local people and businesses in Goole. “None of this would be possible without the generosity of the local community. We are very proud of where we are from, and by using the local ‘salt n pepper pot’ landmark we hope to inspire other local children.”

2019 WINNERS! February marked the end of our 2019 Cutest Companion competition – as you got your chance to vote for the cutest pet in Goole

Following the results, we popped down to Clan Shots Photography studio to catch up with the winners!
We were proud to team up with the RSPCA, donating all the entrant fees from the competition to the charity (£175.00).
This year’s competition was tightly contested, with Tilly the cat marginally coming out on top. Second place went to Willow, with third placed Lola B closely behind.
The Goole based RSPCA branch support and work closely with the national charity, and are primarily responsible for generating their own funds to help care for local animals.
We met up with both Tilly and Lola B’s owners at Clan Shots Photography studio (as pictured above) to celebrate their success. Thank you to them for coming down to collect their prize, and get in our lovely photo!
We would once again like to thank all our entrants for their submissions; we certainly struggled to pick a winner in our office.
Tilly the cat’s owner received £150 from Our Goole, along with a 24x16 canvas from Clan Shots Photography. Our runner-up Willow received the same canvas and £50 from Our Goole. Finally, in third place, Lola B and her owner received a £40 gift voucher for Clan Shots Photography.
We appreciate all your co-operation, and will be back with another competition for you to get involved in at the end of the year. Amelia’s cause A local family from Swinefleet are aiming to raise £100,000 to help their daughter with her development after being diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy Christopher and Chloe Wright are hoping one day their daughter Amelia will be able to walk independently, but require additional funds to help make this dream a reality. Amelia is currently receiving fantastic care with the NHS, but not everything that she requires is covered under the costs. Our Goole spoke to Christopher, who was appreciative of the help of the community and explained Amelia’s situation. Page 20
“There is a lot that the NHS can do, and at the moment the care that she is receiving is fantastic. Unfortunately not everything is covered under the costs of the NHS. So, we are looking to raise the cash to do as much as we can for her. “Obviously, there are additional things that Amelia needs, which come with a cost. “Early intervention is key, you cannot stress that enough really about how far that can go in helping her.”

Christopher told us how a straightforward pregnancy turned into a very unexpected birth.
Christopher also spoke about his appreciation of the community’s effort to help the cause.
He said: “My wife, Chloe, had an undetected haemorrhage which in turn caused our daughter to suffer grade 3 HIE asphyxiation meaning no oxygen could reach her brain.
“We have been bowled over by the support we are receiving, we always knew we had a good family and friends’ network but it is also the reach beyond that as well. We are touched by everyone that is wanting to help. The people that we do not know as well, for those to be reaching out and getting involved is something that means a lot to us.
“We have been told as parents not to expect anything - Amelia might never sit, stand or walk on her own. It is our dream to see her achieve this goal no matter how much effort or time this might take.” At the moment, the couple have raised just over £2,400, and are thankful for any donations made. Chris also told us there are various things going on, all to help Amelia. “We have recently had a coffee morning down in Howden, and I have agreed to do a half marathon. My wife will be doing a walk in excess of 50 miles, and then we have got someone doing a sky-dive, so there is a lot going on. “The overall goal is hopefully to one day get her walking. We are not saying it will be an overnight thing, it may take years and years, but it is all about putting as much effort in as possible.”

GOOD NEWS FOR TENANTS! From 1 June this year letting agencies and private landlords will no longer be able to charge tenants any fees whatsoever when they rent properties. In the past and up to the 1 June most agencies and some landlords will charge a small fee to help towards the overall costs in connection with referencing and drawing up tenancy agreements. From this date the legislation which now has Royal Assent and has been called the
Tenant Fees Act 2019 stipulates that this will no longer be allowed. Furthermore, tenant deposits will be capped at six weeks’ rent and anything more than this will also be unlawful. This legislation covers all Housing Act tenancies in the UK. TOP TIPS FOR SMALL EMPLOYERS We cover some ‘basics’ that you need to remember to ensure that you meet your duties as an employer under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1. Do take time to think about how the law will affect you. It is businesses that have given no thought to it at all, and have made no attempts to meet their duties, which are likely to end up discriminating. 2. Do consult a disabled person about any reasonable adjustments they might need to enable them to do the job. 3. Do talk with your staff about the DDA and the issues it raises. You will find that ‘putting your heads together’ can help you all to understand the issues and come up with solutions. 4. Do remember that if you employ a disabled person, you Page 34
are more likely to be able to respond to the needs of your disabled customers, because you will be familiar with some of the issues. 5. Do ask for advice – you are not expected to know everything all at once. You can also use other advice services like ACAS, the job centre, your local Business Link or Chamber of Commerce. 6. Do treat disabled people with respect and dignity. People may not ‘look’ or behave in a way that you are used to but they should still be treated as an equal. 7. Don’t assume that making reasonable adjustments will
cost lots of money – most cost nothing and the average is £75. Many adjustments are about doing things a little differently. Remember that you may be able to use Access to Work to pay for many adjustments. 8. Don’t be fearful of employing disabled people. Disabled people want to get a job and to do it well. You want skilled and good quality staff and the best person for the job may be a disabled person. If you do your best to make your work practices fair, everyone will benefit. Former Challenge Cup winner becomes Goole Vikings ARLFC Club Ambassador
Rugby League made a historic return to the Victoria Pleasure Grounds on Saturday 9th March when newly formed Goole Vikings ARLFC played their first ever home game Among the keen fans, was Castleford Tigers prop and back to back Challenge Cup winner Liam Watts, who agreed to become Club Ambassador following the game. Liam, who was alongside Goole Mayor Cllr Richard Walker, told the club he was willing to “get the team off the ground by helping in any way he can.” Speaking to Our Goole, club Secretary Darren Smith told us: “For a player of Liam’s standing to wish to involve himself with a newly formed amateur team is an amazing opportunity for the club, and we feel honoured that he wishes to help. “His young sons who he brought to the VPG on Saturday have already expressed a wish to play for our junior teams when we form them, so no
doubt we will be seeing a lot more of the Watts’ family in Goole this coming season.” In 2018 Watts agreed to sign for Castleford Tigers, following successful spells with Hull KR and Hull FC. Overall, the day turned out to be a great success for the Vikings, with over 400 people from the local community coming down to the VPG. The result narrowly went against the home side however was a promising start and a great spectacle for fans.
