Charity making progress after ‘devastating’ impact of the pandemic Martin House charity costs nearly £9million-a-year to run, with only 12 per cent of that total coming from statutory sources Martin House tells us: “We rely on fundraising and voluntary income for the majority of our costs. The impact of the pandemic has been devastating to our fundraising, as we, and many of our fundraisers, had to cancel events. We expect to lose £2.2million in voluntary income in this financial year as a result of Covid-19.” Our Goole caught up with Clair Holdsworth from Martin House who won Contribution to
Page 6
the Community (Charity/Voluntary Sector) at this years Goole and Howdeshire Business Excellence Awards to find out a little more about the charity and what their plans are for the future. When was the business set up? Martin House opened in 1987, in Boston Spa, near Wetherby, with the addition of Whitby Lodge in 2002 as a specialist unit for teenagers and young people. What services do you provide? Martin House cares for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, from across West, North and East Yorkshire. Our services range from planned respite stays, emergency or symptom-control stays, end-of-life care and bereavement support for families. Our care team includes specialist doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and other healthcare workers, as well as art and music therapy, bereavement support and a clinical psychologist. We provide care both at our hospice, in hospitals and in people’s own homes.
Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers
What makes you proud of your business? The huge range of talent and skills of the staff, from the expertise of the care team, to the retail managers who run our charity shops – everyone who works at Martin House has a valuable contribution to make. On top of that, the time given to us by our volunteers, who help us in so many ways, and everyone across our region who supports us, from running marathons to holding bake sales or buying our Christmas cards. Without all of these people, Martin House couldn’t offer the specialist care to seriously ill children and young people. Did you enjoy your night at the awards? Our team had a wonderful night at the awards, it was lovely to meet so many people and businesses from our community, and be part of a celebration of their successes. How did it feel to win Contribution to the Community (Charity/Voluntary Sector) of the year? We were delighted to win this award. It recognises the hard work and dedication of every member of staff at Martin House, who
Issue 056-November 2020
all contribute to the excellent care we give to families from across our region. What makes you stand out? Our care is holistic, meaning we look at the whole child, and their family, and our aim is to ensure that every child and young person who needs palliative care can access it when and where they need it. We work with our colleagues in the NHS across our region, to provide joined up care for children and their families. We are also one of only three centres in the UK which trains consultants in paediatric palliative medicine, and we are actively involved in research to further the knowledge and understanding of children’s palliative care. What are your plans for the upcoming year? We had just submitted plans to extend the hospice when the pandemic hit. Obviously this has been put on hold for now, but in the next 12 months we are hoping to make progress with this major project, which will help us continue to provide the vital care and support families need.

FROM A POLICE
Latest local pol This month, Inspector Jon Powell wants to update the community on the police’s latest priorities and what they are doing to make people safe and catch criminals when they commit offences
“We know how reassuring it is to members of our community to see officers out on the beat and therefore we’re doing everything we can to ensure that the Neighbourhood Policing Team Officers are out and about as much as possible.”

Issue 056-November 2020
E PERSPECTIVE:
licing priorities As a police force we want to prevent crime and disorder from happening in the first place. Of course we want to catch criminals when they commit offences, but I believe if we can prevent an offence from taking place in the first place, people will be safer and there will be fewer victims. Our Neighbourhood Policing Team is dedicated to solving problems by working with our communities to keep people safe, protect vulnerable people and prevent crime. We regularly meet with partners to ensure we address local issues, deal with individuals and solve problems effectively. Some of the partners include Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, Youth and Family Support, Housing Officers, Environmental Health and the East Riding AntiSocial Behaviour Team. We share information and resources to deal with local neighbourhood issues, particularly those identified as causing the most harm in the community. To ensure we understand what our communities need, we have been busy going door-to-door as part of our Humber Talking initiative, inviting people to have a conversation with us about
what matters to them and what their concerns are. We know how reassuring it is to members of our community to see officers out on the beat and therefore we’re doing everything we can to ensure that the Neighbourhood Team Officers are out and about as much as possible. Occasionally we will publicise this and invite members of the public to join us on a “patch walk”. This gives people in the community the opportunity to come and meet our officers. We need the public to help us. If you are a victim of crime, or witness crime or anti-social behaviour then please report it and give us the opportunity to do something about it. Please navigate the site below to select your local community. You can instantly find out more about your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, see how you can get involved in shaping our activities, find out more about what the team are doing and see some of our recent appeals for support and examples of our good work. www.humberside.police.uk/teams/goole-south

Baby group booming in Goole My Baby Can Dance Selby, Goole and Surrounding Areas is a a preschool activity based on natural movement to music, and multi-sensory early years’ learning, developing little ones’ physical and emotional needs in a structured, friendly equal setting Janine Burley-Gosling set up My Baby Can Dance in Hull in 2011, and by then end of that year it had won Best Pre-school Activity for Hull & East Riding for 2012 by Netnums.com. The first franchise was sold a couple of years after and there are now 13 franchises. The early years’ development programme teaches children about vital skills in preparation for preschool with music and movement. Children are given the tools to go on to structured dance tuition with confidence and social skills plus musicality and coordination. Our Goole chatted to Sam Owen-Smith who bought her first franchise in 2015. What is your proudest achievement? In the five years since I became a franchisee with My Baby Can Dance Ltd we have won countless awards, Little Vikings, What’s on for Kids, most Page 14
recently we won Best Children’s Activity for under-fives in the Hull and East Riding Mumbler Awards which was announced during lockdown and I was absolutely thrilled. Our director won Business Woman of the Year 2018 with the Yorkshire Choice Awards. But to be perfectly honest my proudest moments come from simple things. When a child has a lightbulb moment in class, for example, last week a very young child learned how to catch and the look on her face was utterly priceless. To see a child achieve a new skill in class and feel confident enough to show everyone in class is just the best feeling. How did lockdown affect your business? Lockdown effectively left my business dead in the water. As a company we decided that we would try to create an online presence to ensure the children continued to remember us. We came to the decision that financially, times
Please mention Our Goole when calling advertisers
were going to be tough for everyone. Some of our families would have lost jobs, homes, been furloughed or made redundant, so we decided that we would provide this service for free. Our families are important to us - this is more than a job, it’s a privilege to be part of these children’s formative years and our relationships with those families can go on for many years. I had a 12-year-old home schooling and two older children remote learning for college and university. Our internet was definitely strained to say the least. Although it took me a little while to get in front of a camera, I do believe the phenomenal support we received from our families saved our business and we have now returned to Covid-secure face-to-face sessions and are full to capacity. It is slightly different, as it has to be, but it’s wonderful being back with our community again. We are offering friendship, advice and social interaction during our full programme of educational activities and I am loving it.
Issue 056-November 2020
What are you plans for the future? I just want to see us grow out of Yorkshire and into the wider community. My own plans for the future of my areas are; take on another couple of leaders to help me provide a six-day programme of classes across the region in all my areas. What would you say to someone thinking of joining the class? I always say ‘come and give us four weeks’ because something magical happens at four weeks, children come out from behind mum and join in with our activities. From then on, their social skills build and enjoyment comes from being familiar with our syllabus. The repetitive nature of our class builds confidence so quickly and confident children soar in education. Our class is such amazing fun, these children learn so much in such a short time you’ll never regret it. For more information about My Baby Can Dance, please visit mybabycandance.com

Property expert David Leake of Housesetc talks to us about how to give your garden that last little bit of attention in preparation for autumn and winter
Final garden prep before winter With the hot summer we have had this year, and the surprise second-budding of your flowers, your garden will have had its work cut out this summer. Here are our top tips as to how best to prepare your garden for the winter. Put away garden furniture You need to ensure it doesn’t all become needlessly wet, rusty, and perhaps even frozen in parts.
Rotting plants Rotting and dying plants and other vegetation in your garden don’t only look untidy, they can also spread disease to other, healthier plants in the surrounding area. Protect vulnerable plants from frost You can protect your low-growing plants from wet weather by covering them with a sheet of glass or a cloche.

This month, Jobcentre Goole talks to us about the Government’s Job Support Scheme (JSS) designed to protect viable jobs in businesses who are facing lower demand over the winter months due to Covid-19, to help keep their employees attached to the workforce.
Job Support Scheme The Job Support Scheme will open on 1 November 2020 and run for six months.
Retention Bonus if they meet the eligibility criteria.
National Insurance and pension contributions.
Expansion of Job Support Scheme
Employers will continue to pay their employees for time worked, but the cost of hours not worked will be split between the employer, the Government (through wage support) and the employee (through a wage reduction), and the employee will keep their job.
More recently the Government announced an expansion of the scheme, providing temporary support to businesses whose premises have been legally required to close as a result of coronavirus restrictions.
Employers can apply for the scheme including the new expansion even if they haven’t previously used the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS). The scheme is available for six months, from 1 November, with payment of grants in arrears from early December. The scheme will be reviewed in January.
The Government will pay a third of hours not worked up to a cap (the Government contribution is capped at £697.92 per month), with the employer also contributing a third. This will ensure employees earn a minimum of 77% of their normal wages, where the Government contribution has not been capped. Employees must work at least 33% of their usual hours. Employers using the Job Support Scheme will also be able to claim the Job
Affected businesses will receive grants towards the wages of employees who have been instructed to and cease work?
